Is it Maxwell though? 4GB may be an indication that it might be Kepler, I see on notebookcheck.com that max amount of memory for Maxwell is 2GB

It is Maxwell, for sure. The VRAM amount could be changed depending on different notebook manufacturers.

Sharply noticed. To the best of of my knowledge there does not exist a 4GB version of the GTX 750 TI (same chip).
Also looking at this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/748571-gtx-860m-2gb-maxwell-vs-gtx-860m-4gb-kepler.html I get this feeling of disappointment that after all this time waiting the 4gb version will be kepler which would make it a big NOPE.

Sigh... does anyone know about another 15.6" upcoming/released light notebook with an 860m (maxwell) or 850m (gddr5) without optical drive and with a decent screen? Maybe some upcoming ASUS with an 860m?

    ^Obed Masih: Hello MrSonarta.
MrSonarta: I have a question about the graphics chip in Y50
^Obed Masih: Sure, I will be glad to help you with that information.
MrSonarta: it has two different models one with 2gb Vram and the other is with 4gb
MrSonarta: as far as I know maxwell architecture doesn't have 4gb vram
MrSonarta: so can you check if the 4gb version in y50 is the older kepler version or the new maxwell version of the same chip
^Obed Masih: Please give me a moment, while I check this for you. Thank you.
    ^Obed Masih: As I know, GTX 860M 2Gb Maxwell and GTX 860M 4GB Kepler.

Haven't we learnt not to trust anything these people say yet.

The 860m in the gigabyte p34g v2 is confirmed maxwell and has 4gb vram.
maxwell and kepler are not pin compatible so they need different motherboards. Lenovo aren't stupid enough to make one version with maxwell and one with kepler... unless they are and this is why the prices seem to be higher than expected.
I'm staying on the fence as to whether it is maxwell or kepler. Just saying that it is most likely that it will be one and not both. We have been disappointed so far by MSI and gigabyte putting kepler gpus in there slim laptops, so I wouldn't be suprised to find out if Lenovo followed suit.

y50 has better specs but its prices are just parallel to y40's. I cant seem to understand why. Lenovo should've just gone for the same specs for both of them.

Just hoping these reps have no clue what they are talking about....

an TN pannell! That would be a disaster!

    Kepler! Another disaster!

The whole point of this laptop was the IPS + maxwell....

I'm willing to buy this only if the 4gb 860m GPU on the $1,449 model is MAXWELL and already Touchscreen IPS..that would be the perfect set-up for me even though it would hurt my pocket.
hopefully the ones updating/managing the lenovo site remains as sloppy as before, indicating that the Y50s got an Integrated Optical Drive and not even professional enough to remove it until today! let's just rely on him/her being unprofessional.

Why would anyone not spend the extra $100 and get the 500GB SSD? lol They have an interesting marketing team. So I guess the cache drive is gone which is a shame. It seems like prices are higher than when the SLI version came out last year. Not much else has been added except making it slightly thinner. I guess they must not have made enough margin in the previous years.

Last I checked, it's STILL listed as one of the features.

Pretty disappointing. This whole roll-out has been sloppy and a hot mess. No reliable specs, inaccurate specs, then a ridiculous starting price. Just seems quite unprofessional and leaves a bad taste in my mouth towards Lenovo who I was considering purchasing from. But I'm out. I'll stick with Asus. Lenovo lost this potential customer.

    THIS,

Also, those Sagers/Clevo models are heavier and thicker.

The ONLY DIRECT competitors (15.6", under 1", 4-5lbs) with this laptop are the MSI GS60 and gigabyte P35k.

There are other laptops that compete in larger and smaller screen (14" razer blade, 17.3" razer blade pro, MSI GS70)

I think Lenovo purposely reduced the size to compete with these high dollar thin gaming laptops. They realized that by being thick they had to compete with clevo and sager. Now that they are in the thin and light class they see an opportunity to charge more...

Is it confirmed that the 1080p panel is also TN ? I think at this point I might switch my buy to the Asus N550 even though it has a weaker GPU.

I agree with you! I love Lenovo design but I would wait for a month or two maybe more, Since I thinking of to get new Siberian Husky puppy from the Y50 money, Will see if they will release later diffrenet Models with less than 1300$, I hope they release the non touch screen with 4GB Maxwell soon in summer maybe. I will wait

    Talked to a Lenovo Rep.

Confirmed only the base model for $1299 has a touchscreen TN panel. The other two available are not touchscreens . All are TN panels. 4k Option in 21 days.(3 weeks)

I copied over the actual conversation sorry about that. If anyone wants to try and chat with them to confirm this please do to reduce my paranoia.

If it's true the closest thing to max specs available now is the base model and it ships in 5 weeks

    Edit:Greater than 5 weeks

I'm personally not too surprised whatsoever that the base model is $1299 after discount. The GTX card and i7 4700HQ justify the price, if you consider the margins that Lenovo has to set on their products, being a big name company. Plus, it's touchscreen. Needless to say, the Y510p is still probably the best deal that you can get. $899 for the SLI configuration and i5.

Same goes for you. If you are unhappy with it, go and get another slim gaming laptop that fits your expectation. But stop trying to tell people who are not disappointed why they should be disappointed like you do for expecting beyond what you should have expected.

    Bummer...

Well between this and the Asus it seems like Asus hands down. If someone thinks the Lenovo is worth an additional $240 to have a 2G Kepler 860 over the Asus with the 2G 850 I'd love to know.

I'd entertain a UHD Touch with the same specs as the entry model at $1500 but that looks like a pipe dream now. So my questions for the geniuses in the forum are:

-Are there any released thin and light with Maxwell GPUs? Are there any in the $1500 range?
-Has the 4K Ghost Pro price been announced? I've seen "around $2000" which seems accurate now but are there any "deals" like Lenovo.com has where the machine might launch cheaper?

I know with laptops it's always diminishing returns but I might be willing to wait for UHD and Maxwell if they are worthwhile.

Maybe its just me, but i dont think the panel alone decides the quality of the screen.. ure IPS displays have better viewing angles.. but TN Panels can look pretty damn good too...

The Y50 is designed really really well (subjective), Its a lot thinner than the sager models too... i guess a price premium is acceptable for that...

Honestly for the specs they've offered right now the price isnt obscene... $1199(justified my assumption below) for a laptop offering the specs it does and maintain a thin and good looking profile it is definitely value for money ...

($1499 - $250 (for 512gb ssd = $1199), ($1299 - $100 (for touchscreen = $1199) im guessing the base model will be priced at around $1199.... anyway im really excited about the laptop! I understand everyone has different needs but lol... Asus isnt anywhere perfect neither is any other laptop at this price point... (heck even the Razer Blade has shortcomings at $2100 for 128GB SSD)

Anyway really excited to see the laptop ! Cant wait to see reviews and neweg/xoticpc to carry them!

I didnt type all my opinions to stamp anyone's toes ... i just felt a lot of the bad reaction might turn away anyone who might be interested in it and checked the thread :) while it might not be for everyone i think its decently priced for a 'thin & well designed' laptop :)
