I dont think Its kepler? as pointed by someone above.... since lenovo has said it will carry maxwell.... im sure there are maxwell gpus... whether the 4gb ones are maxwell or kepler.... i really dont know thoughwe'll have to wait....
I think an 860m kepler or maxwell regardless is definitely much faster than a 850m with DDR3 though...

On that note i agree with you the asus is a very compellingi like the Y50 design a lot more .. so im probably biased

Add me to the disappointed column. Like most of you, pricing is higher than I expected, and the TN panels across the board are a huge letdown. They even cheaped out on the wireless AC card, going with the 3160 instead of the 7260 - which isn't exactly deal breaking, but still a bit of a letdown. I'm curious to see what the "unreleased" models may bring, but it seems almost inevitable that they will be overpriced, and with a TN panel. Unfortunately at first impression, I too and leaning ASUS at this point.
Out of curiosity, if they were perhaps planning to add IPS models down the road, does anyone have a best guess on when we might see those rolled out, if at all? I see that a lot of you have been on the Lenovo train for a while and are familiar with past models, releases, etc. I've only started considering Lenovo after hearing about this Y40/Y50 series, so any guesstimates any of you may have would be appreciated. Thanks guys. -
For those concerned about the screen. TN or not, I really doubt they put a worse looking screen in their latest model. From experience, the screen in the last two models was stellar. I wouldn't put too much stock into it until someone gets one and actually sees the viewing angles/colors
Edit: and don't forget that Lenovo almost NEVER gets their descriptions right on launch day. The Y500 released with a "matte" screen when it was glossy. The y510p released with a "Glare wedge" screen when it was matte. I even got a version that said it had SLI and a DVD player, which was impossible. These CSRs are reading from the same website you are so it's not like they are staring at the machine and telling you it looks like a TN panelhailgod likes this. -

The only other 15.6" 4k screen I'm aware of is on the Toshiba p55t... It is an IPS screen. Doesn't it seem likely Lenovo would source the same 4k screen from the same manufacturer?
The online chat reps don't seem knowledgeable enough to answer the technically-detailed questions we've been asking. IMHO -
However, do note that the ghost pro comes with a lower resolution (3k vs 4k), THREE storage options (two m.2 sata and one 2.5") vs ONE on the y50, a faster gpu (870m vs 860m), and could weigh and where from .5lbs to 1lb lighter.
Because of these advantage on the ghost pro, I would need to be somewhere around $1600 for a y50 with 4k IPS and 860m 4gb maxwell. The reason being is that I will likely swap out the storage for one of those western digital combos ssd/hdd drives (120ssd/1tb hdd) which will set me back ~$200.

So I suggest we all wait until everything is official before we start bashing Lenovo for nothing. I seriously hope it'd be better. To be honest, I'd rather have a non-touch FHD and no SSD just to get the price lowered down. Hell, I'd buy it for sure if there's an option to buy one without the dedicated GPU. I'm interested in Y50 mainly because of its looks and form factor. I doubt I'd have a lot of time to game, but a little light gaming will suffice. -
-
Lets assume the rep was right and the 2gb card is maxwell and the 4gb card is Kepler. Would the 4gb card still be an upgrade because of the extra VRAM? Or is the 4gb card actually a downgrade because of the architecture?
-
If you plan on gaming at anything above 1080p though, then you would probably see a difference with the 4gb since higher resolutions chew up video card ram, especially 4k.
EDIT,
but remember, an 860m will not be strong enough to push a lot at 4k. So you might still be better off with the faster maxwell. -
Great.. So I'm struggling to see how the $1,450 configuration isn't great. The MSI GS60 has a gtx860m 2gb Kepler.. This is 4gb, and cheaper.
-
I'm just getting fristrated waiting for the 4K display to come out. It could be additional weeks. Should I just buy the Toshiba p55t? What would I loose/gain with the Toshiba p55t?

My frustration comes from the terrible configurations they are offering (8gb+1tb straight to 512?, no touch on top model?, etc) and the lack of details (I still have no clue how much this things weighs, could be as low as 4.7 or as high as 5.7 or in the middle at 5.3lbs). -
-
-
would it be wise/cheaper to get the $1,299 model and just upgrade the RAM to 16gb and exchange the 1Tb of HDD to a 512gb SSD?
i would already like the $1,449 config/model if it's also touch enabled and the gpu as maxwell.
PS: warranty is not an issue for me. i don't think their (Lenovo's) international warranty applies to my country. got a personal/shop warranty from the one who'll get me one though. -
hey guys new on thread but have been following for a while. I just talked to Lenovo rep and they say the 2 gb touch model is maxwell architecture for the 860m
-
Lenovo support must be pretty fed up by now. We should them more xD
-
2. what i don't get is why do people want/need touch on a laptop?? i personally would not like to smudge the screen up and as far as windows 8 functionalities are concerned you can change it using "Startisback.com" for $3 and have windows 7 interface with windows 8 benefits anyway (really well done by the way): https://teksyndicate.com/videos/de-suck-windows-8-best-windows-8-start-menu-start8-vs-start-back
3. Isn't 8 gb ram enough for gaming? or do you want to stream HD at the same time and watch a 4k movie on an external screen while installing something? (serious question) -
btw, i'm still wondering how hard it is for the one managing their online marketing to remember their commitment regarding the "NOTIFY ME" button. hahahaha!
-
If the fully loaded Y50 4k version can stay at $1700 or less, i'm def going for it. But if it's 1800 or more, the Toshiba looks like a pretty good deal at $1499. -
-
-
The MSI Global GS60 2PE Ghost Pro 3K Edition is really starting to look attractive.
-
Do you guys think the Y50 (and Y40) will see regular discounts to prices around $800 like the previous iterations have?
-
-
2) I just like having more options. what would you prefer? a $1499 model with touch or with none.
i picked that model because that's the one closest to what I want.
3) i just want to buy something that would last. my logic is that if I get the top model or a quite ahead variant, i wouldn't be bothered of having a slow machine in 2-3yrs time to make me think of buying a new one again. just want to future proof mine, bro.
and as for multi tasking, i guess i won't have any or much problems with that configuration. I heard that CAD requires quite a lot from a machine.
i think i can even game on an external screen while doing my CAD projects on Y50's screen or vice-versa.
i'm still waiting for the other models. there might be a model that's exactly what i would want. -

Wow what a huge thread!
Any information when Y50 will become available in Europe?

I wish they had a 8gb version with normal matte screen and 2gb maxwell gpu. 4k would also be nice but matte is fine for me.
-
Someone needs to be a hero and buy the model with the 4gb gtx860m to check to see if it is maxwell or not for all of us cause these reps are not sure about anything.. If that baby is maxwell, I'd pull the trigger in a second.

4GB maxwell shouldn't really provide any performance improvements at 1920x1080. For 4k though, it should help quite a bit.
8GB of ram is enough for gaming.
I feel that the notebook space is relatively uninformed on how much ram one really needs. However, if you have the budget, it doesn't hurt to pick up 'better' hardware.
I would also think that having a kepler chip would cause a new motherboard design, since the 2GB 860 is pretty much confirmed as maxwell. This would lead to more work on lenovo. -
The 2GB 860m is Maxwell, 4GB is Kepler. Currently, touchscreen on only the Maxwell variant.
-
It seems like many of us would prefer the ability to customize. For instance, I would love a 2gb gtx860m Maxwell with a 512gb SSD, 1080p, non-touch, 8gb ram. Doesn't xoticpc exist so people like us can customize brand name laptops that aren't customizable through the manufacturer? So even if lenovo doesn't release configurations we want, exotic will offer a way around them correct? (I am not tech savy and do not feel comfortable upgrading on my own).

Talked with like the 4th representative and they all say after May 15th, there will be 4K models avaliable.
And for people who don't already know. Currently the 2GB is Maxwell and the 4GB is Kepler.
Comparison Between the Maxwell vs. Kepler Version
The Maxwell version, despite less shaders, the new architecture is around 10% faster. The GeForce GTX 770M is also slightly ahead of the Kepler chip, which is not least caused by the larger memory interface. We are pretty sure that the Kepler GTX 860M would be faster with a 192-bit memory interface.
GPU Overall Performance
GeForce GTX 880M +65%
GeForce GTX 780M +47%
GeForce GTX 870M +37%
GeForce GTX 860M Maxwell +10%
GeForce GTX 770M +3%
GeForce GTX 860M Kepler Base (Average of 16 games)
GeForce GTX 765M -23%
