I wouldn't count on that battery time considering they were using an ultra low voltage i5 processor which would drain less battery and perform worse than the i7's included with lenovo's consumer offering.

Also the model with the optical drive currently says 1-3 business days to ship. -

The 1069 model looks sweet! I will be prchasing within the month!

It's a bit weird how the models are changing so quickly. And yet there is still only one Touchscreen model, which only has the weaker processor. Meh.
Hopefully when the Y50 finally comes to Canada the models listed will be set in stone. And how on earth is there supposed to be an internal optical drive? The model was thinned down and everything is packed pretty tightly...moving the ports would be extremely complicated for them to do, and is pretty much useless. -
I think the odds of that Lenovo rep being correct are pretty abysmal. Though on the other hand, it seems ridiculous for Lenovo to charge that much premium (relative to the regular model) for an external drive, Bluray or not.
-
I am very happy about the CPU boost though! For my purposes, it's the most important component and the 4710 is awesome. I just hope it becomes available on a Touch model. If not, I'm going with the matte screen version with SSD. Unless the models change again, lol. Why is Touch not offered with SSD right now anyways?

Nice new models! And some of them only 1-3 days shipping! Go review everybody!! Couple things are holding me back on my XPS 15:
- long battery life
- great screen
- touch
I hope lenovo can tick at least 2 of those boxes - then I'm fully on board. -
So, through some backdoor shenanigans, I successfully placed an order on the y50 with the Blue-Ray player. About 30 minutes later, I checked the order details, and it has the shipping date listed as October 17, 2014. Weird, right? So, did some more searching around and Lenovo has torn down the model with the Optical Drive. So, it was likely some tech error. I'll have more updates in the morning, possibly.

The 4K panel, from what I know, it'll be a TN matrix which is not good at viewing angles in general (but good TN panels like one that is used in G750 are not bad at all) but colors are real problem. But maybe only for me because I have good IPS screen at my desktop computer and my old laptops has the IPS too. Sure it's my opinion and the screen will be good for you and most of the users.
As you said, we must wait for a proper review for final thoughts about Y50 because it can be a little surprise in the end.
Sorry for my English!

I have no idea what's going on. Seems like Lenovo doesn't either. But it seems like the prices have switched around. The touch model is now the most expensive one. And the "new" models with the 4710 are the mid-priced ones. I guess this was the aforementioned end of the sale (and start of a new one) that a previous poster mentioned.
-
I bet there will be 12+ models of the y50 once 4k comes out. That seems a bit... excessive. Doesn't it? May as well add in the "Customize" option to trim the fat.
Update on the model with an optical drive:
I ended up canceling the order and getting the base-line model with the i7-4710HQ. The 2gb VRam seems unnecessary and I wouldn't use the optical drive enough to not justify simply purchasing a $25 external one instead (and I'm still having a hard time believing its really internal).

Congrats! Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for the heads up on the More Models button. Funny, I've been hitting refresh waiting for that button to appear for the past week. And once it's finally posted, I completely overlook it...
Amazing to me that still only one has touch...

Some of the i5 models already reached the stores in China. The temperature according to someone who has bought it, is much better than his old gs70, being max around 70 after some benchmark (with a cooling pad, i5 processor, surrounding temperature 20+).
We should see some more detailed and professional reviews for the China models in a day or two.ChowMeow likes this. -

Some interesting stuff in this thread. So I can't believe I didn't already know this but has there always been a slot for an optical that wasn't previously used?
Also, these configs are starting to look pretty impressive if you can get a deal on them. Still waiting for 4k, though. -
I am between the Dell XPS 15 and the newly released Lenovo Y50.
I am following the forums for both models here and I noticed that quiet many people are in the same situation looking to either the XPS 15 or Y50.
Here is a quick but very detailed breakdown comparison between the two models for those looking into both.
Dell XPS 15
-3K, Top quality IGZO based, Touch Screen
-NFC
-DisplayPort
-Better Wifi with AC support
-Lighter and smaller Ultrabook like form
-Very good Sound and Speakers
-A version with the new Haswell Refresh CPU is coming soon but not available in the USA and Europe yet
-16GB RAM and 512GB SSD out of the box
-More "Professional like" look and feel
-Weak and outdated NVidia 750M GPU
-No NumPad
-About 5 Hours of Battery Life
-Coil whine is a confirmed major issue of the current configurations of this model
-$2400 price tag before taxes
Lenovo Y50
-4k Touch Display (hopefully is NOT a TN, as 4K configurations are not available yet) 1080p panels are however TN based
-the latest Maxwell based NVidia 860M even with 4GB of GDR5 RAM (simply there is no comparison with the XPS's 750M)
-Configurations with the current Haswell and the just released Haswell Refresh are available right now
-16GB RAM and 512GB SSD out of the box
-No NFC
-No DisplayPort
-Weaker Wifi in the current configurations, with AC support
-NumPad available
-Little heavier and bulkier than the XPS 15, not Ultrabook form design, but still very slick package
-Red themed keyboard and backlights (I am personally not a fan of this, most people however love it)
-Great Sound and Speakers experience with a build-in Subwoofer
-About 5 Hours of Battery Life
-Significantly lower price. Currently you are getting the top of the line 1080p configuration for $1450(!). This is ~$1000 cheaper than the XPS 15. I am expecting the 4K configuration to add another $200-300 but still WAY lower than the DellSandbag likes this. -
I want to cancel my old order too, how did you cancel yours? I chatted with a rep online he said it will take 3 business days to precess, i want to cancel immediately and order a new one!

Fresh news from some tech forum in Monaco...In France, the y50 has been confirmed for July or August (!!) at a low starting price: 800€
Interesting as well, this (reliable) site mentions a y70 model (?):
MedPi – Lenovo Y50-70, un notebook pour joueurs avec GTX 860M à 799€
Note the EXTERNAL optical drive (25€+ 4k option is mentionned but with no details.
Their reviews are usually very thorough (temps / screen colours etc.)
Now I wait...and save up.
Update 1: thanks to twitter, I've found a shot of this y50-70 reference...

For godes sakes I am so tired of this crap lol. Feels like this thread is a CSI episode. Lenovo needs to at least release the pricing for the 4k version so I know whether to wait for that or not. Also, is this laptop confirmed to have dual fans for CPU and GPU?

FYI on the battery run time. It's not 6 hours. Look at the total minutes next to the hours and you can see it was a typo.

I am glad they added the Haswell Refresh options, that should be there to begin with.
Currently there is NO top-tier configuration available with Touch, meaning, the new i7-4710, 16GB Ram, SSD 4GB 860M and TouchScreen.
But if the 4k option is touch-only then that should not be a problem.
Also on Specifications Tab, I noticed they updated the Bluetooth version to 4.02. Weird since Bluetooth have a v4 following by the latest v4.1. -
I sure hope Canada gets the Y50 before France does... At this point I would rather get a Non-Touch config with matte screen than have to wait until August...
The picture of the screen on that Facebook page looks pretty good to me. I dunno about colour accuracy and stuff, but it looks pretty bright and the colours seem to pop pretty well. Better than my 4 year old Acer Timeline X anyways. I'm sure I could get used to a matte screen if it was good quality, and matte would have advantages over glossy sometimes. *shrug*. My external monitor is matte and I can't say it really annoys me.
As soon as an i7 4710 model comes to Canada, I am probably pressing the trigger on it. All the configs have their own pros and cons, so I doubt I would really regret it later. -

I definitely hope it arrives here in Canada before August, or else it's Xoticpc for me.
why is everyone so excited about the i7-4710? isn't the only difference 2.5Ghz rather than 2.4?bva91 likes this. -

In terms of specs, the Haswell Refresh CPUs, the lack of DisplayPort and NFC was on top of my list.
Haswell Refresh CPUs are already available, if Lenovo needs to add something in hardware, then that is definitely a DisplayPort to seal the deal, especially for the 4K models. -
Also, the extra 0.1 GHz speed in both normal and turbo CPU modes is nice to have. CPU is the most important component to me (for smoothly running emulators on max settings), and the newer model doesn't really cost more. It's just a nice bonus, and is great to have. I couldn't buy a model with i7-4700 now that I know i7-4710 models are available...for me, the slight difference in CPU overrides any preferences I have for matte/glossy or touch/non-touch.
Thinking about things a bit more, I think touch would actually be kind of cool to have, and glossy screens are nice. But I'm a bit concerned that the extra glass layer will be much more likely to crack if I accidentally drop my computer somewhere. On a few occasions where I forgot to close my laptop bag (which opens on the side), my current computer fell out and hit the floor but was still totally fine. Good as new! Obviously I wouldn't recommend purposefully dropping or throwing your laptop around, but stuff happens sometimes. I doubt a touch screen not specifically advertised as Gorilla glass or extra durable would survive that...And fixing screens is so expensive and annoying that one almost might as well but a new laptop. That would be a pretty lame way to waste $1.5 grand...
Anyways, my point is that when choosing glossy vs matte or touch vs non-touch or even 2GB Maxwell GPU vs 4GB Maxwell GPU, there are slight pros and cons to each choice and one can basically always justify a purchase of either. But the improved processor in the new models is just a free gift. -

Does anyone know the brand and how reliable Lenovo's 512GB SSD is? I was considering buying a model with 1TB and switching it out for a 500GB Samsung 840 Evo, but it would be easier to just buy the 512GB SSD they have.

the brand is san disk and it should be just fine
