I will be buying the y50 with all the bells and whistles no matter how long it takes to be released.
-
it probably won't be long if lenovo wants to keep itself on the grid
-
Jinx's prediction is right most of the times though, and the other thing is that the color of the one in the CES video is too good for a 6-bit TN panel. The other thing is that most people won't even notice the difference unless they have used an IPS panel before. Even if it is TN, Samsung is still the king of TN panels and it even used TN on its newest 4k monitor so it shouldn't be a problem.
Then what's the point of arguing? LTN is just a way samsung names its panel and nothing more. Unless you are convincing yourself that the 4k display is gonna suck I don't see any reason to believe firmly that it will use a TN panel -
I was just wondering if anyone believes the ship date of October for the Y50 laptop. I switched my order to the model with the newer Intel processor. They were suppose to cancel the old order but that shows going into manufacturing now and shipping late May. The October date seems ridiculous. Is the newer Haswell processor that hard to get or what. It's got to be a very conservative date.
What do you guys think? -
Is IPS really that big of a deal? I thought the screen on y580 was pretty good, why doesn't lenovo just outright label its screens IPS or TN instead of LED? How much better would an IPS screen be as compared to a good TN panel with decent viewing angles anyway?
-
considering how no one got an actual model yet, it might as well be true
-
Didn't someone a few pages back say he's getting his model on 20th??? I think it was to ship much later but they were delivering early???

A lot depends on the quality of the ips and Tn panel used... Even the $2500 asus uses a tn panel.... In the end... Quality of the display is important.. That being said... Ips displays generally have better viewing angles.... Hence the never ending discussing in the forums on the display

I originally ordered the Y50 base model (4700HQ, 8 GB RAM, Hybrid, 2GB 860M). When I called to ask them to cancel it (I ordered the 4710HQ, otherwise same specs, no BD Drive), the expected shipping date per their manufacturing department was 05/24/14 (I asked, since I was concerned about cancelling; still think I might end up doing a return :/).
My new shipping date is 06/10/14, but manufacturing isn't in on weekends & post-sales told me it'd likely be a bit earlier.
This is all coming from post-sales, though.bva91 likes this. -
The price of $1099 is for the model with a 256 gb ssd.. Also.. The 850m is just as powerful as 765m... Maybe slightly more powerful... But the 8870m is pretty much equal to the 765m... Notebookcheck says the 8870m is equal to a 765m.. So the r9 m270 should be better?
While the cpu isn't exactly the most powerful... And a mobile cpu would've been better.. I guess it's good people who need some good battery life.. And don't need too much cpu prowess( it definitely won't throttle the gpu)?
Also its much thinner than the msi or the sager models..
Anyways I act tall brought up coz I was wondering why there was no word of the y40 anywhere lol :-D

I'm not sure they're targeting the same customers... The y40 is thinner and will run cooler (I guess) .. And will mostly Give a much better battery life...

When they cancelled it did they email you or give you any notice? Did it take a couple days to show up cancelled? They were suppose to cancel it for me. Good to hear your laptop is shipping in June. Hopefully mine is too. -
Yes, Samsung doesn't make "IPS," but they started making PLS in 2011, and they weren't only making TN before then. They were known for their great PVA monitors like the 305T, which I'm guessing some people mistakenly labeled as IPS.
Speaking of which, Samsung's LTN125AT01-201 is listed as PVA on the same web site as you cited:
SAMSUNG LTN125AT01-201 Overview - Panelook.com
That's just one of the examples I found. It appears that LTN doesn't necessarily mean that it's a TN, but then again, I'm not convinced that the hardware manual is 100% in line with what we'll find in the release model, at least worldwide. -
The 8870m gets squashed by the 765m. Probably drivers more than anything, but still squashed. The U series haswell coupled with bad driver suppory equals a subpar gaming experience for the user. Which kind of defeats the purpose of it being named a gaming notebook. Plus the ddr5 850m on the ge40 is basically a slightly underclocked 860m
-
You're right the 8870m is definitely weaker and thats why its cheaper ($1099 with a 256gb ssd)
Might run cooler and is much thinner (im not fond of MSI's design except in the gs series...i agree thats a subjective view
)
Probably will have a better battery life too..
that said i do see your point, would've been much better if they atleast put an 850m ddr5
-
Wait what? You're inferring all that from a severely compressed low bit rate low color depth YouTube video shot with who-knows what camera and digitally altered through post-processing and being viewed on who-knows what display?

Manufacturing isn't in on weekends, so I haven't heard back yet, but they said it takes ~3 business days to process the cancellation (for some reason?). I haven't gotten email yet, but if I do I'll report here; otherwise, I'll follow up in a couple days to see what they say.
Good luck with your shipping. -
Anyone's y50's ship yet? My current ship date is posted as 5/22 with an estimated delivery date of 5/30. These dates have both been changed and now are sooner than originally stated.
Anyone have date even sooner? So pumped to final get this thing. I will be replacing the HDD with a 500Gb Samsung EVO 840, so that should speed things up even further.bva91 likes this. -
Mine is still the same shipping date.
Do we have confirmation its a 6 gb/s SATA III slot and not an mSATA slot? -
CyberTronics Notebook Consultant
So there is gonna be a version of Y50 with i5-4200H or it's still a preproduction model?
-
I agree I was wrong about it being close to a 765m.. I meant its still better than a 750m though.. Didn't mean any offence
I got your point

I made an account just to post lol
so guys anyone knows which is the shipping date of the lenovo y50 with the processor 4710HQ??
it is in october? D=
sorry for my english -
I would be guessing that the shipping times were conservative and that it might ship out a day or two ahead of the time they said. Also, it had been pretty much confirmed that there is no mSATA and that there is just a single m.2 (ngff) slot for wifi. Only option for a real SSD is to swap out the HDD unfortunately.
-
Do they have some plastic foil on the bezel? If not - than the bezel is awfully glossy (even without the tape/foil). I don't see a point of getting a TN/matte/anti-glare screen with glossy bezel around it - it kind of defeats the purpose. At that point, I would just get the touchscreen so it looks unibody and you get the advantage of better IPS colors.
-
TN confirmed.
-
Thats for the FHD Model.
The 4k version is still undetermined right? -
Price of course, $1099 with 256GB SSD (Lenovo and -$50 Student or -$100 Barnes) vs $1,299.00 (Newegg). Also the look/style (depends on the user, for me Y40 looks way better IMO)
Its better than the 750M / 755M present on the Y410p, and a little below the GTX 760M.bva91 likes this. -

See my post above. My order receipt currently says June.
-
I don't know why anyone is putting any stock into those CES videos. That was clearly a prototype and not a production model, so it very well might have had a 4K IPS panel, but that doesn't mean that's what the production models will have.
I'm not arguing. I'm simply stating that I believe the LTN part of the Samsung model number has meaning. Unless we see something more definitive, I'm going to assume the 4K panel will be TN. That's all. Nothing to argue about. -
Okay thanks for the update. I am going to call tomorrow to make sure they cancelled it if I don't get an email or some update. It seems weird that it takes 3 days to cancel it. Most places can cancel it right away.
The model with the 512 ssd and Intel 4710hq shows shipping in Oct for me. I have a hard time believing that is true. I'll update if it changes. My old order showed end of May. -
ooh, thx =D
-
I checked shipping on mine just now & it's updated to be shipped June 9th (1 less day) now. The major differences in parts between mine & yours would be the 512 SSD vs the Hybrid & the 4 GB 860M vs the 2 GB 860M. If October is accurate on yours, I'd find it more likely to be delayed due to the 4GB 860 Maxwell than the SSD. I'd check in with them when you check on your cancellation though.
Either way, that seems strange; has anyone else tried ordering one of the models above the cheapest two & has a different shipping date? -
fun fact
intel plans to release broadwell processors by the end of this year
Exclusive: Intel CEO promises Broadwell PCs on shelves for holidays | Reuters
ya'll wanna wait another year for Lenovo y51 with broadwell processors?
-
Done with waiting. I feel like by the time they have this laptop at a lower price, decent specs, and ready to ship those Broadwells will be out. No way I'm waiting for those, especially because I'm not terribly concerned about my processor.
-
I decided days ago to stick with my Y510p and wait for next year model anyways.
2014 is a transition year for laptops (gaming ones specially), 1080p growing into higher resolutions but still not really implemented, new gen consoles games in development wich means technology will change and step up into more exigent standards (but its not done yet, they still make games with 360/PS3 versions too), companies trying to make their laptops slimmer by doing changes like removing Optical Drives and such, but still figuring out how to handle the heat with less space to, etc. all of those things are kinda new and will have lot of trial/error on the middle, thats why I think next year models (Y51? and competetitors) will be more ready than this year offers of any company.
So, for people who already have a competent gaming laptop maybe would be better to wait till next year =) -
i have acer aspire 14" with TN panel intel hd 3000 graphics and core i5
i cant even play hearthstone without stuttering
-
Lol, I feel ya bro. Playing on an old compaq with core2duo and x3100, I have to turn down the graphics and still it goes to 3 fps during starfall or blizzard.
-
unfortunately is it a matte screen with a glossy wedge around it and people have been complaining about it
-
It's always better to wait, but waiting can go on forever, I suppose you could wait 2 more years for another technological leap. y50 with a single 860m chip is a pretty solid, should last you 2-3 years in terms of comfortably being able to play the best games out there.
You already have a y510p so I don't really see the need for upgrading, I wouldn't either if I were you.BlazeHN likes this. -
But yes, the plastic screen protector cover is still on the laptop in those pictures, so we don't know how much of the glare off the bezel would be reduced without that protector.
-
That's what I have said before, 2014 isn't a good year for computers. Everything is in transition. Next year we get Broadwell, DDR4, 20nm Maxwell and a lot more other upgrades

not much, it's confirmed already that the wedge has a glossy finish

CPU: 53
GPU: 49
This is the i5 model. Apparently the fans don't start spinning until the laptop has reached a certain temp -

I mean they kinda have to or else they would have to push back Skylake too. Broadwell was on delay for a long time; back in the promotion brochures they said it would be available in mid-2014, and now they are postponing to the end of the year
