Yup, I hope to get some sexy Lenovo YSomething beast with Broadwell processor, next year GPU, 4k IPS touch, DDR4, etc, for a very good price during 2015 Black Friday for something that was announced/released on Q2 2015haha... I think I went way to much into the future

This is one toasty machine.

The only difference between my old order and new one is the processor. It was just 10 dollars more for the newer better processor so that is why I changed it. They didn't offer that model until 2 days after I ordered my first one. That is why I find it hard to believe that it is the 860m 4gb or the ssd because that order shows shipping at the end of may. The one I am trying to cancel. We will see once I talk to them on the phone tomorrow.
-
you thought too much

Ok so I've been a part of this thread since the beginning, but now I have a general question. So I had a Y510p and when the Y50 was announced, I returned it (it was only like 3 weeks after I got it). So now that the Y50 is out, I've been looking at the different models, and does anyone know whether it is safe to bank on the card being Maxwell? I'm between the Razer Blade 2013 model (on sale through Amazon currently) and the Y50 (any model). If the Y50 card is Kepler, I will definitely go for the Blade as portability > raw performance for me. Anyone know what the performance is like graphics wise on the different Y50 models?
-
We can confirm all GPUs are Maxwell and there's no difference between the different Y50 models in terms of graphics performance. More VRAM doesn't change anything on 1080P unless it's for video editing
-
Again - not true. If you are playing games with heavy texture mods VRAM does matter. I played Skyrim with 6990M that handles it just fine but due to heavy modding I hit VRAM ceiling and the game stuttered until I made some changes. On 1080p
-
Are you sure the 4GB models aren't keppler-core components?
-
Confirmed Maxwell for 2 weeks now for the 2GB and 4GB.
-
Ah, that's nice
I was pretty sure the 4gb were keplers!
-
Just got my shipment confirmation from Lenovo! My base y50 should be here by mid next week! I can't wait! Anyone else have theirs ship yet?
-
You are making me feel bad because I just got myself a Y510P, and for sure wont be due for an upgrade anytime soon
-
Sorry, misunderstood what you were trying to do. Thought you started with the base model.
Just reporting in: Lenovo sent me a cancellation email today. So if anyone cancelled & hasn't got one within a couple days, I'd talk to them about it. -
Did it ship on your original expected ship date? I am curious as to how good they are with their estimates.
-
That's a special circumstance which is why I mentioned stuff like video editing. What I mean is unless it's a VRAM consuming program, which are relatively less used or don't use enough to cause a concern, there's not much difference
-
It shipped about four days ahead of their estimate, so I guess they are decent with their estimates... Though that might mean bad news for some of the people on here.
-
Did anyone here order the touch model? Would be great to get some pics and insight on the screen, as I'm curious to see how it differs from the non-touch models we've been seeing on the prototype reviews.

Ehh, I ordered the baseline with the i7-4710HQ within an hour of it being listed online. My original shipping date was set to May 29th, but it got updated last night to June 30th. Not terribly happy about that.
-
Always ask a rep about your shipping estimate. The one online isn't accurate.. I think it uses some kind of funky algorithm.
-
I agree with AltCtrl you should call them. Are you in the bottom 48 states? I ordered the same base model (w/ 4710q) on 5/16 with 5/30 est. shipping.
-
Eagerly awaiting an owners review (with photo's please) before ordering my Y50...
-
Same. The base 4710 model is what im aiming for. Just want to know, is the 4710 vs 4700 noticeable?BlazeHN likes this.

The razor blade 2013 is a terrible price for performance laptop from what I've heard. Get the gigabyte p34gv2 I'd if your not going for the y50. The gigabyte weighs just 3.6 pounds and is .82 inches thick, and has an 860m. Idk what the razor 2013 has but its definitely a lot worse than that.

Razer is known for overpricing their stuff so I'm willing to bet the price point will be around the same.

I'm basically torn between these two and the N550JK. I know touchscreen isn't really a big deal, but it would be nice to have the feature if it's somehow utilized in the near future. I'd prefer a 15" screen, but maybe getting a 14" is perfectly ok? The N550JK has both, but am I willing to step down in GPU power? The Y50 seems to have both the 860M and touchscreen, but will I be ok with a TN screen? Still waiting on XoticPC to get the Y50 also to customize storage devices also.BlazeHN likes this.
-
Yeah I got my cancellation email today too. It takes about 3 days or so. -
TN on Y510 is more than ok, I can see from extreme side angles perfectly (I dont even know why I would need to look at it from there anyways) and colors and bright is totally good vs any other TN laptops, even the Y500. I dont think Y50 TN will be less than that, probably will be even better.
-
Thanks for the reply. I'm not well versed in the IPS vs. TN comparison, but the biggest flaws of a TN screen sounds like it's the colors and the viewing angles. The colors, I understand, but why is a reduced viewing angle considered a major flaw when compared to the IPS? I would think most people view their screens from 60-120 degrees, which I assume would be within the TN's range, right?BlazeHN likes this.
-
Yeah, I was never a fan of insane viewing angles, most of the time, I would rather prefer people around me weren't able to view everything happening on my screen.

the heat is noticeable
-
obviously not everyone needs viewing angles
those i'm particularly sensitive about are the vertical ones because
when i am sitting down in my chair and were to adjust my sitting position i always have to tilt the screen as well to again have the perfect picture and that annoys me
especially if it's a bad TN screen then the upper half of the screen really looks terrible
But then again not everyone has a good eye sight hence why it doesn't bother them in the first place
this topic has been going back and forth and back and forth for forever now, i think we can pretty much conclude that it's individual preference weather you want IPS or not and move on... -
I know is not my bussines and all but... I would not pay +$300 or something just to skip tilting my screen a bit sometimes xD
*flies away*hfm, kingfirejet, bva91 and 1 other person like this. -
but the thing is even if you look at the screen straight on the colors are not perfect. you have to be quite picky for that but like one brilliant guy in this thread once said: if you are a little bit OCD you need to get an ips screen
*ignores the part with the +$300 cuz it's not +$300 for just ips*BlazeHN likes this. -
Yeah, I don't understand how tilting a laptop screen once in a while is even a mild nuisance. Frankly, I would tilt it to be perfectly parallel to my eyes regardless of official viewing angles...I want my screen to look flat and rectangular instead of tilting away at the top or bottom, and with the same easy correction I can fix colour appearance too. So amazing vertical viewing angles are totally useless for me. Like a previous poster, I would even prefer for people walking around me to not see everything on my screen. Meanwhile, even mediocre TN panels have horizontal viewing angles good enough to watch a movie with a few friends (the only use of viewing angles I can see myself taking advantage of). I suppose colour consistency on high-end IPS panels is nice for precise graphics editing work, but since I'm not a graphics designer that isn't something I have to worry about. I've used a TN panel all my life and have really liked them: the one on the Y50 will actually be an upgrade for me - more RGB coverage and deeper blacks than I'm used to - unless the matte finish really dulls colours. Plus TN panels have higher refresh rates and thus a greatly reduced risk of ghosting, something which would definitely bother me. Oh, and no annoying IPS glow to worry about!
On a different topic, why have some posters have said that the i7-4710 will make the laptop run hotter than the i7-4700? I've tried googling the issue and have only found out that both have TDPs of 47W. CPU comparison sites rate power consumption and heat output of the two processors equally. So what's the deal? Even if the 4710 runs slightly hotter, how big can the difference possibly be if it is clocked just 0.1 GHz higher? I understand that performance will also be very similar but unless heat becomes more noticeable 2.5 GHz > 2.4 GHz, no? The only thing tempting about the weaker processor for me is that shipping dates seem to be much sooner. On that topic, how much more powerful do you guys reckon the i7-4710 is (relative to the i7-4700)? I really don't want to wait until October (probably even later since I'm in Canada and no Y50 models have show up at all here yet) but would consider it if the difference in processor power was noticeable.kingfirejet and BlazeHN like this. -
I'm just saying, I'm a gamer and a digital artist, and I've never cared about viewing angles at all. I don't tilt my screen back and forth nor do I care about people beside me seeing my screen. I don't know why people here are soo crazy about viewing angles, are you gonna use the laptop side ways or upside down? This ain't sexual positions you should be doing with your laptop screen lol
-
The 4700 and 4710 will be virtually the same temperature-wise. Those stating otherwise have not done their research, so disregard those posts.
-
Thanks Proteen! Do you know if the i7-4710 is noticeably stronger than the i7-4700?
Let me phrase it like this: What would a 4700 not be able to do that a 4710 could?
It seems that all modern games can be run with a 4700 at maximum settings (with a good enough graphics card), no? Would the slightly higher clock speed just impact some professional software then? And what's the drawback of a 4710 if it doesn't use more power and/or release more heat? I mean, why aren't all 4700s actually 4710s, lol? -
The 4710 adds 10 more bucks to the machine. Hence, the added 10.H01D3N likes this.
-
The 4710 is about a year newer than the 4700, that's the "biggest" difference. The marginal speed increase is likely worth the $10, but completely not necessary. From the user's end, you will very likely notice no difference between the two.

Intel Core i7-4700MQ vs i7-4710MQ
The thermal power of both processors looks to be the same: TDP is 47W for both the i7-4700 and i7-4710. Granted it may be slightly different, but I'd assume it would mention a heat difference if it was significant, no? Apart from TDP, what else would impact power consumption and heat release for two processors of the same generation/with the same architecture? -
Based on what we know so far about the y50, do you guys think it's a good choice to pull the trigger on buying one? Really in need of a new laptop and kinda worried it will be out of stock in the upcoming months
-
Yep, I'm in the same boat. The Y50 and the G550kj just don't offer enough to make me ditch my Y510p. I don't care about 4K at this point and the CPU/GPU upgrade are too minimal for me to spend $1000+ again this year. The 750m SLI plays everything I need without any problems and the little things that pee me off right now about the y510p (weak wifi, crappy port positioning) aren't enough to change my mind.
But, we'll be watching.....
BlazeHN likes this. -
that's not true. same TDP within the same generation doesn't mean same temperature. An i5-4200H has 47W TDP and you think it would be nearly as hot as i7-4700HQ?
-
Hello. Since some of you guys are getting it soon, here's hoping to see some pics of the laptop.
some first impressions would be good.
I'm waiting for the y50 to be released in Asia since my HP laptop has died.

At this point I should be one of the first to receive it and I will definitely be well documenting it with possibly uploading a youtube video being a quick reveiw of the hardware and such and what I will have allready done to the machine. (I am going to be swapping out a hard drive for a solid state as soon as I recieve the machine allong with swapping the wireless card for a 7260AC m.2 NGFF card.
I might even put in stuff about how easy it is to upgrade... We will see, can't wait to get the machine in my hands, glad Lenovo didn't take a full 3-4 weeks to ship the thing!Sandbag, liteon6x, BlazeHN and 1 other person like this. -
Dunno if anyone noticed this on the Features page:
Integrated! Good to hear and see it wasn't a typo. Now if only they would slap a touchscreen on that model, they might finally have me as a customer! -
Is the 4700 vs 4710 still being argued? Has no one ever overclocked a processor before? Heat comes more from voltage than clock speeds, and 100 mhz is not going to make a difference. Very little difference in performance, even less in heat. Haswell doesn't even run that hot. The only thing to consider is is it worth 10 bucks? And at $1200-$1500, why not?
BlazeHN likes this. -
I'd still take that with a grain of salt. There's not anywhere on the Y50 to put an integrated optical drive. I'm not sure why that keeps showing up in their marketing, but I'm pretty sure when it all shakes out, that's not going to be offered.BlazeHN likes this.

As far as I'm concerned, EVERYTHING about this laptop is speculation and vaporware until someone outside of Bulgarian and Chinese review sites get one and actually confirm what's inside. So grain of salt, duly noted.
That being said, I've been following this laptop and that page for months, and it's gone from bragging about an Integrated Optical Drive so that you can load software without being connected to the internet, to removing that bragging point altogether, to adding back a very specifically-stated integrated Blu-Ray drive on select models- AND an actual featured and purchaseable model with that feature. I think it keeps showing up for a reason- while a lot of people are fine without an optical drive, a lot of people aren't. If they have to offer a little chunkier form-factor (perhaps a Y510 like body), I don't put it past them. More than just the US, I think they stand to alienate a large segment of people worldwide who don't have access to Netflix, Hulu, or don't use Steam or whatever all those online services are that Americans tend to think are available to everyone in the world (which they're not).
As an American living in Asia, believe me DVD rental shops and optical media are alive and well here and they ain't going nowhere. To shut out that very large segment of potential buyers is boneheaded (and that includes the idea that external drives are cheap and portable). Maybe they are confident enough in their American gamer segment to truly not offer an integrated optical drive alternative, but I'd like to think that this is not a typo that just keeps coming up.
