Oh boy.. I've been using my 95% gamut screen laptop for 3+ years.. is it really that significant?![]()

4GB for absolute certain! Source: TES/Fallout mod enthusiast. If you plan on playing a big mod game like TES or the inevitable Fallout 4 on this system, you DEFINITELY want the 4gb!Metazoick likes this.
-
On my desktop with 1440p textures and many other mods, I barely break 2GB. You'll be fine with 2GB on a 1080p screen.
-
I just canceled. I think I'll play it safe so my bank account doesn't die haha. But thank you for your advice and quick replies, greatly appreciated
.
-
Thanks for the advice! I had the GTX 470 on my desktop running my heavily modded Skyrim with 1-2k textures when available. It had a bit over 1GB VRAM and it ran okay. It eventually died but that was years later.
Hard to pass up the price point on the base model, may still want to invest in the husky 4GB card tho -
I'm really worried about the heat problem on the keyboard. I mostly play Dota 2 so QWER are the keys I use most. I'm considering canceling my order because of this
-
This has been one of the biggest arguing points on this forum. I completely agree with whoever said this before- "Before you peak at all 4GB VRAM, you're card will stop running the game fluently anyway." The 860M 4GB isn't going to take on Watch Dogs on FHD or whatever not because of a VRAM issue, but because of an optimization and raw power standpoint. It isn't worth the extra $200 to get 2GB more VRAM. Plus, get the base model and get it within a week through Klick.
-
I'm a Dota 2 player as well, it really helps if you have a keyboard protector, usually silicone material, it greatly helps the heat from reaching your hands.
-
What are all the heat problem posts about? Has anyone complained about this? Source?
Edit: NM, I missed the pictures... I highly doubt that's surface temperatures. It looks more like an extrapolation based on a thermal image. I have a tough time believing the trackpad is going to reach 88 degrees F externally. -
Heavily modded games and video editing appear to be the points where 4gb could be considered useful, though I play a heavily modded skyrim with 2gb fine but it isn't perfect (then again I'm currently on i5 too, so it's not that comparable) - if you want to be completely certain you wont get capped and you play heavily modded stuff a lot it could be worth it, especially if you plan on getting more games and modding them out like that in the future, but I wouldn't class it as a necessity.
Playing it safe is probably the better option, that's what stopped me ordering until I had at least one review confirming it would at least turn on and not explode and at least this way there's no stress on your end now - and no problem, glad to help if I can
As for the temperature, if it were hot when idle the two who have the y50 i7 would definitely have mentioned it - iirc one even said it was cool to the touch while browsing online. I do not believe those temps can either be external and/or taken while idling considering that, unless the chinese model/y40 is seriously warm.
(I just figured out avatar =/= profile picture, so yay for image!)H01D3N likes this. -
Again, we don't know what conditions these Chinese stress tests were putting on the Y50. On Dota and other less demanding games, for example F1, I personally don't think that the heat will be that bad. They could have been running Crysis for 6 hours straight and then testing the temps. If anyone can read Chinese fluently and wants to translate the 3 articles for us, feel free to correct me.
-
Well said. Thanks! I think I'm informed enough to make a decision. Sorry to stir up the old debates!Banender likes this.

No prob, man, its great that you made your decision. Good luck with your Y50!
Source? Somewhat sketchy (by somewhat I mean very sketchy) Chinese reviews of laptops that haven't come out. -
The older model Macbook Retina and the older model Razer Blade didn't get as hot as the Lenovo Y50.
Retina MacBook Pro Runs Cool and Hot but is Comfortable Overall
Razer Blade 14": Review
They also distribute heat much better. DAT LENOVO SUBWOOFER THO seems to be creating a heat issue.
From Google Translate:
Our testing method is still at room temperature at 25 degrees Celsius, so this notebook running Furmark pager software, allowing GPU to work at higher loads. After 30 minutes or so, to see this books were internal core body temperature and surface temperature. -
gamut is a certain complete subset of colors. for lcd displays, it uses the RGB model while for printers it uses CMYK color space. in this case, 95% gamut means you can match 95% of the sRGB color space, which is the highest you get with consumer grade product I believe
-
Don't cancel your order because of one confusing image in another language. I know most of us are going into this cold due to the lack of reviews (did anybody actually find out why lenovo sent nothing out beforehand?) and it makes red flags more red and flaggier, but I trust what the people on this thread have said about theirs more than whatever is going on in that review. Also I heard dota 2 gets something like 80fps with the gtx 860m? That's insane.
It's hard to compare the heat between the y50 and other laptops like this when we still have pretty much no idea how hot the y50 runs. My laptop GPU is over 45c when completely idle right now because it has just completely given up on the whole 'staying cool' thing - so much so I play a decent game on medium settings for twenty minutes and it gets past the temp cap and turns itself off. I refuse to believe that the outside is hotter than a dying laptops GPU if we're comparing idle to idle. -
When I calibrate my monitors, I typically get 97-99% sRGB on everything except my real cheapies. Even my wife's cheap Asus laptop gets 97%. Now NTSC and AdobeRGB usually sit in the 70s, which is why I was asking.
-
Ugh! terrible customer service from Lenovo. Went ahead and checked with them on my current order (placed Memorial day weekend) after I also noted the extension of my shipping dates (now showing 6/30 with arrival by 7/8). The rep was not helpful at all and never offered any sort of recompense (no 5% discount, no $50 accessory offer, nothing). That was even after multiple attempts by me to insinuate opportunities to retain me as a customer. I may have to pull the trigger on my cancellation despite the 3-5 day wait and then try to order through Klick as others are suggesting.
I don't know folks - this is only my second Lenovo laptop and I am not too happy with the response I'm getting so far! Someone convince me that I'm doing the wrong thing here - $1400 does not grow on trees for me here! -
The only reservation I would have against ordering through that Amazon seller is the return policy. As a previous y500 and y510p owner, I can tell you that I was not satisfied with either and ended up returning them for full refunds. Lenovo has a top notch return policy, which might be worth waiting for. Just thought I should throw that out there.

really? then I'm not sure how it would be. to my understanding, the 95% gamut is the highest you can get on market, although I am in doubt about which color space they are using
Edit: after a bit of googling, I think it is the NTSC instead of sRGB. that was my bad for confusing them
source: http://compreviews.about.com/od/monitors/a/LCDColorGamut.htm -
My old Vaio has given up on staying cool also, and will turn off if it gets too hot. It's just something that happens as a laptop ages; eventually they'll get dirty/hotter/less efficient at distributing heat. Wouldn't that worry you (at least a little) if the Y50 already starts at high temps, and there is a chance it will end up like our last laptops?

Sorry for the questions:
What is Klick's website? I googled and got a lot of results...
Direct email to Klick?
Do they install SSD's and put Windows back on it (I don't want to do this myself).
Would I still get the full 1 year warranty from Lenvo?
I read on here that Lenovo won't take a return for under 3 dead pixels. Does Klick make their own inspection/dead pixel gurantee?
Is the Y50's touch screen an IPS? Or it's TN?
I'm after the elusive touch screen + SSD option which doesn't seem to exist... Have we had any touch screen reviews? I'm wondering if the screen quality/angles will be better than the matte version which I beleive Tim wasn't too impressed with.
Thanks, -
That must be aRGB then because sRGB can go up to 140% I believe. Most notebooks won't go that high. I think the Elietebook does though.
-
sorry but I just edited my post after finding out that it was NTSC instead. my bad for giving you the wrong info

RAULGALARZA75:
Implying you're going to quit wont make them do anything, plus I doubt tech support or whomever can give discounts like that - in my experience it's pretty much the sole domain of the retentions department themselves. Get through to them and you should get a discount, but you have to sound serious about quitting. It seems like lenovo have great laptops at great prices but I guess customer service of this quality and cost is how that exists in the first place, although it still sucks when they muck about with shipping and the like. If your model is cheaper and quicker from Klick it really seems like the best option, I've ordered through them and it was completely hassle free, even with it being international.
XENTAR712:
Their ratings are really high with ebay and amazon, I'm fairly sure they only have one negative review on ebay and that was from somebody who wouldn't take a full refund + shipping as they wanted a replacement using a part they didn't have. I buy a lot of stuff online and with a score like that they must have helped out a lot of people as bad experiences get reported far more than positive ones, and iirc I remember somebody said they offer full refunds (don't hold me to that, though). If you wanted to know their returns policy you could probably get a quick response via email. (see below if you need it)
PINBACK21:
Yeah, it was refurbed when I got it and it's been at least two years, a good few taking aparts without reapplying thermal paste etc, and a good few drops since even then, it's allowed to passive aggressively kill itself by this point, I'm not going to hold it against it. And if the y50 is really hot then yes I'd be very concerned as my laptops don't live on desks so never get optimal cooling anyway, I just haven't seen anything to convince me that this is the case yet.
ARIF:
Amazon.com At a Glance: Klick Online
Laptops Netbooks, Computer Components Parts items in Klick Online store on eBay!
If you want them to install an SSD for you I would get in touch with them, [email protected] is the email, also ask about returns/repairs about dead pixels etc.
The warranty from lenovo will still hold (provided you're in the US I believe) as that's due to your laptops serial number, not where you got it.
No touch screen reviews yet, they seem to be taking a little longer to ship.
Edit: Got rid of the quotes to make it less wall of texty, sorry about that.
-
No prob - it's confusing having so many variations. Yeah, you're probably not going to get even close to that with this screen. That's a good monitor you have there though. My wife does heavy photo editing for her job and lives with 70% NTSC. I don't think she realizes it can be better but I don't say anything because her customers don't complain and I don't want to fork out $1k for a 27" monitor

Guys, I just found something important. as we know from the manual that the model number for 4k display is SDC LTN156FL02-L01, but we tried several times and wasn't sure whether if it's PLS or TN. Here's what I found, the model number for GS60's display, which is confirmed to be a PLS panel.
as you can see, the model number for the display is 156HL01-102. H is the code for FHD display as we can see the pattern from other sources, while all the panels with T are TN. but this one, with L, just like the FL02-L01, is a PLS panel. chances are that most likely the 4k will be a PLS panel
yeah I would say wait for 4k or have fun with an HUGE, noticeable quality drop...fantasticzig likes this. -
Thanks for your thoughts. I really tried to lay it on there about cancelling and going with another vendor (like what was suggested in an earlier post). I connected with customer service, not technical support. I even asked very directly to get me to their customer retention department. Their answer? "I don't know what you mean or what we can offer you"
Seriously? I even asked straight up: "what can you do for me to retain me as a customer?" Nothing... nada... zilch. Same answer "I don't know what we can do for you" ... then proceeded to offer me the way out the door to cancel.
At this point, I'm looking for touch screen and the most loaded version possible. Sounds like it'll be a wait until next week anyway for Klick, but it sounds like I may get something way sooner than July 8th!!!
-
Not sure if this review was posted, it has temps in furmark and lots of benchmarks.

I ended up switching my order to Klick too. It was significantly cheaper and faster; Lenovo kept giving me different dates for my shipping and I didn't feel like dealing with it anymore. The difference between the 4700HQ & 4710HQ is negligible & not worth the price increase or the trouble.
Excellent customer service on their part as well. -
If she was just customer service, and knowing how bad the reps seem to be for knowing the same info, it's very likely she didn't know. Retentions may or may not be a term they use, it's just either the department you have to go through en route to the cancellations team or the cancellations team themselves, and these guys may be the only ones authorized to give you anything. If you do get through to them it'd also probably be better to say you found one for a cheaper price and you're thinking of going to there instead rather than just out and out asking for a bribe, as it's at their discretion and they may not give it out if they think you're just fishing, though this is unlikely (but I don't know their structure/policies on this, this is just how it generally tends to be). Don't forget if you do do this and you DON'T get an offer and it looks like they're just going to cancel you can stop the whole thing - don't go through with a cancellation for your ego's sake - I've had to literally hang up the phone before because it seemed like it was going that way.
Klick are only getting the base model next week for touch, but you could see if they're planning on ordering fancier ones soon/check and see how much it'd be for you to do it up yourself, it'll cost you nothing to compare before you make up your mind with lenovo.
They really do, if I'd ordered from lenovo like you guys originally I'd be seriously peeved at their service. I'm just trying to be an optimist and putting it down to them getting an unexpectedly high amount of orders (I mean look at this thread alone, they must have got a bunch right at the start and that's without advertising it via reviewers etc). -
Also, when I was talking to the lenovo csr I am pretty sure he mentioned a y70.
Then I found this thread. Might be nonsense.

I'm getting trolled so hard.
After months of waiting for the Y50 I finally put in an order.
Takes Lenovo over 2 weeks to ship it out.
They create a shipping label on the 23rd but the package doesn't actually reach UPS's hands until the 27th for some reason.
Then it leaves from China on the 27th arrives in Japan on the 27th around 7 am but the package gets delayed with no estimated delivery date due to "Mechanical Failure".
It's now 9:50 pm on the 29th and I have absolutely no idea when I'm expected to receive this package or if I'm even receiving it anymore. For all I know the airplane carrying it blew up out of the sky.
Probably a bit extreme but holy crap this is extremely frustrating and annoying.
I'm not happy with how Lenovo has handled itself since the announcement of the y50, which is a feeling shared by many here on this forum. I'm also definitely not happy with UPS. This is not the first time I've had delays and issues with UPS. To be quite frank I can't stand UPS and would never use them if I had the choice. Maybe it's just luck of the draw but FedEx has always done right by me, I wish more companies would offer delivery through them.
P.S. Timothyz please post some videos and lots of pics as soon as possible! =) -
Xentar712, since you seem to know a bit about monitors, what do you think about 27 inch Asus mx279h? What NTSC gamut % is it?
-
This is exactly what I was told as well and I ordered on may 11th the touch model. Regardless, as soon as the 4gb video card is guaranteed maxwell I will be canceling my order for the base touch screen and getting the nontouch 16 GB ram 4gb vid ram 1tb HDD +8 ssd from Klick. I was hesistant about dropping the touchscreen but I will be using the laptop primarily for gaming and coding and will have a mouse connected. I have a tablet and smartphone I can touch.

+1 rep from me Metazoick. Solid responses to everyone, every time. I would also give Lenovo some credit for taking way more orders than they could handle, but there definitely is reason to say that Lenovo botched it on this one. The fact that they can't even give shipping times is ridiculous and actually illegal in the US. There's something called the 30-day-rule, where basically if you order a product online, by mail, or by telephone, and the company does not give you a shipping date, they are required to get the product to you within 30 days. Now I don't do law so I don't know if this could apply in lots of peoples' situations, but it's interesting at least.
-
I'm looking at the pictures and the screen quality is washed out, is that because of the camera used or the lcd screen is not really good?
or am i just spoiled in using a 95% gamut screen for 3 years

Guys, sorry but no talk about things other than Y50 on here. There are threads for monitors.

Yeah really, so here's a link if anyone wants casual reading: Business Guide to the FTC's Mail or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule | BCP Business Center
It reads as mail or telephone only but it applies to Internet sales, mail-in sales, telephone sales, or fax-in orders. It's an incredibly general rule.
Back on track, is anyone still sticking with their Lenovo Direct order? -
So have most of you opted for the nontouch model? I just want to be sure that I'm making the right decision by choosing to go the nontouch route

LEWDVIG:
The y70s were spotted a little while back too I believe, but it was assumed that it was a cancelled prototype iirc, and I think the only evidence of it is the one image of them stacked like that and others taken at the same time (I can't tell from your wording if you're just naturally taking it with a grain of salt or if it was finding this thread that made you think it was nonsense because I'm an idiot, in which case my response is moot, sorry)
COLEMOINE:
If it's just maxwell confirmation keeping you from going to somewhere else I really really would just assume it is, it's very unlikely it isn't at this point, though if you want to make literally 100% sure then waiting can't hurt. Don't forget it takes a few days for an order to be cancelled - you don't want anything to overlap.
H01D3N:
Yeah, they've definitely messed around a lot, but if it is simply due to them not expecting a practically unadvertised laptop to garner so much attention then it should really improve once they've got into the swing of it all and have enough parts etc. Unfortunately that's no use to those of us who've been stalking this thing and got it early.
(Also, thanks for the rep + compliment
)
I have, it's so much cheaper plus I'd never use it - it'd be a novelty at best. Plus glare. I have a glossy screen now and spent 10 mins watching shiny black because I couldn't make out a part of a tv show as it was too dark to see with any kind of light in the room, I'm excited for matte.

I am currently in queue on the lenovo site to cancel my order. I will place an order with Brian tomorrow seeing as they are most likely closed right now. I only intend to play dota 2 and csgo on it and I think 8gb ram and 2gb vid ram will be more than enough

Yeah, I went with nontouch. For me the deciding factor was the half a pound of weight that the touch put on.
(Finally got signature working too!) -
I'm going for the touch Y50. Why not? The question I'm asking myself is if I want to go with the base Y50 touch through Klick once they get it, or pay a little more for the 4GB through Lenovo (and arguably wait a bit). It will probably come down to the price difference.
colemoine likes this. -
For now I am going to stick with my Lenovo order until someone offers the top touch model with faster shipping. I like the 16gb of ram.
-
The extra half-pound was a factor for me too, but what it came down to was I knew I wasn't going to touch my screen. I didn't want to pay a couple hundred extra for something I'd use as a gimmick.
-
Dang, everybody and they mama ordering from klick now. I canceled my order of a base model from lenovo and am now waiting for pending charges to clear to order from klick. Should i be worried about their stock on the base model because it seems pretty popular on here?
