You would manually have to change the resolution to the higher one. I've been having to change it up and down a lot. I keep it at 4k but chrome, origin, blizzard, cmd, and more are all very small. Some games will run in a small 1080p window unless you manually switch the desktop resolution to that. The 870m pays a lot of games at 4k but there are also many that come to a crawl and you have to go 1080p or 900p. The 860m will probably not pay that many games at 4k, so 4k buyers will be running into the same issues I have until it gets fixed.

So, I went to upgrade to the 7260 AC, and when I boot it it says "Unauthorized network card...." and such. Really Lenovo? You didn't put this card on the whitelist? Come on!!! I am really annoyed now.

omg i thought when playing a movie it would automatically switch...
omg 2014 is such a transition year unbelievable...
ok now i just have 3 options
1. wait for a review of the TN y50's viewing angles and finally decide if it's ok or CRAP
2. wait a couple of months for 4k hoping it's ips and have a taste of not-yet-ready-technology (or don't use 4k resolution just enjoy the ips panel at 1080p which defeats the purpose of paying the premium for 4k resolution though)
3. wait 1 year and buy a decent laptop at a decent price hoping that the stupid companies will realise the importance of ips panels -

I am by no means an expert on this - but weren't the Y510's locked as well and you had to unlock the BIOS to install a 7260? -
That screen viewing angles from laptop bg is a protoype.. there were some pics of the chinese model's viewing angles.... much better...
-
Yes, that was the case with the y500 too i think

How's the screen Timothyz? We are all going crazy to see if it's a decent TN panel.

Please show us some pictures! Thanks!

I knew it!!!! I figured this would happen!!!!! Lenovo has done this in the past! This is why I wanted to know if the stock card was acceptable or actually garbage.

It seems the worst thing I could have done was own an Asus Q550LF for a month and be spoiled by the gorgeous IPS display.. As a result I'm here now like most of you waiting on reports of the Y50 screen hoping its TN panel won't be TOO bad in comparison. I may not have given the Y50 a 2nd thought if not for that Asus, but now I find it hard to stomach downgrading to an inferior display after experiencing one of the better ones out there.
For those of you considering holding out for the 4K model in hopes of a better panel, Brian at Klick assured me they would be carrying them once released (likely a month or more away according to him), so that may serve as some incentive to hold strong with their pricing likely to undercut Lenovo's if you're able to wait it out. -
I never expected the y50 screen to be great - it'd be silly of lenovo to have a great screen on base then ask for a fortune for a slightly better one when they could showcase the quality jump with average vs 4k, but I still doubt it's going to be under average all things considered. I wouldn't return it for an eh screen as matte is still a big enough improvement (not mentioning everything else you get with it), but if it were bad it would be pretty annoying.
Timothyz, take as much time as you need, you owe us nothing (although we would be insanely grateful for any information of course). But seriously, boo to the wireless card. I was worried that'd happen from the y510p. It makes no sense for them not to let us update it like that.
Also, on my ebay order tracking for it I have 2 delivery packages? 1/2 and 2/2 both say they're for the laptop, but the total price is still the right total order so it isn't like I messed up and ordered two. Is this normal? I never bothered to stalk the tracking on an international order like this before.ChowMeow likes this. -
what model did you get? the one with blu ray? is it possible that it is 2 because of the external blu-ray reader?
i'm still hoping the blu-ray drive is internal and like the ones that the macbook uses before. if that's the case, i would be getting that one. -
Just get someone who can mod the BIOS. Really though, the 3160 isn't a bad card anyway.
-
I picked up one of those on SD for my wife. Awesome deal and decent video card for the price. I would be hard pressed to switch in your shoes too because you're going from 3x storage options to 1 and a worse screen. The Y series storage options have gotten worse and worse each generation - msata->short sata m.2 -> nothing
-
Sometimes when you order stuff online that just happens. I've had it happen to me when buying an iPhone case on Amazon. It read as 2 packages, but upon delivery it was just the one. I don't know about international though, maybe ask Brian?
I agree with the matte advantage too. Glossy is just awful.
As for the viewing angles, do people really care so much that a screen with a 45 degree viewing angle is unbearable? I personally would rather have less side to side viewing angles. Up and down angles don't really matter either to me because I don't look at my screen on an angle; only head-on.BlazeHN, fantasticzig and the_EDJ like this. -
Yes some people really do care so much about viewing angles. I explained why they are important to me already 10 times on this thread so I won't spam about it anymore. Different strokes for different folks.
-
I used to feel that way but after having poor viewing angles for the past couple weeks I think 45 degrees is about my minimum limit. I like being able to show others something on my screen without having the colors look completely faded. It doesn't need to be perfect but I at least want it to be somewhat legible. It's one of the major disadvantages of the Razer Blade that I am considering returning it for. I never realized how important it was to me until I had to use the screen at work.
-
I ordered my laptop on 5/15, and just received a Delayed Shipping email. Now they "anticipate" it to ship within 30 days from now. My level of excitement for the y50 is rapidly going down the drain. . .
-
For the other Canadians out there, I have good news and bad news.
Good news: A full week after my purchase, Lenovo finally lists Estimated Shipping and Delivery dates on the order tracking website! Woot!
Bad news: My Estimated Shipping Date is June 19th and the my Estimated Delivery Date is June 26th....lame.
The promised delivery has gone from 1-3 days to 3 weeks to 5 weeks for me, and I was definitely one of the very first people to order. They better deliver within June! On the bright side, I'll have the top model with 1i7-4710, 5GB RAM, 4GB VRAM, and 512GB SSD. The only reason I'm willing to wait so long is because the components are indeed very new and very good. I'm cutting Lenovo some slack in the customer service department (where they've been pretty terrible so far) in exchange for them making a good product. -
Nope, just the base model from Klick, so it should be just the one box coming. Internal bluray would be amazing, but now I've ordered mine plus an external cd/dvd drive I'd be both impressed and annoyed if it were, hah.
I just wanted to make sure it was something that could happen - my total spend is still correct so it's not like money will mess up, I was just a little confused. It's possible that the global packages blah service counts as a separate item - the guys that work out import tax/duties and charge a touch extra on top in order to not have to pay anything else once the model arrives, it'd just be odd that it has the exact same product title as the laptop. I'm sure it's just ebay being weird, though. And I only look at mine head on too, I'd be more concerned about bad colours etc. Although I'm currently using some generic laptop screen I had to pick up and replace with after I cracked my old one, and I really don't think it's a great one (if it tilts down to be like 80 degrees instead of 95 half the screen vanishes), so it's very very unlikely I'm going to get anything worse with the y50.
Thanks for the help!
EDIT: Seriously, if lenovo is taking so long to send stuff they've messed up badly. It should not take you over a month to get a laptop. It's kind of going from 'annoying' to just ridiculous. There's no way that I should be getting my laptop in a totally different country weeks before you guys who ordered it way before me will get theirs. -
At least something is happening, mine has been in "released to manufacturing" for over 2 weeks, guess the pigeon is taking awhile to get to the factory with my order specs.
-
I'm not too upset about the screen, as long as it is at least average, which it surely is. I ordered the touch model, which is edge-to-edge glass face (glossy), and although some people hate the reflective nature of them, they tend to make colors pop more.
I'm also not crushed about the WiFi; it's at least a functioning, dual-band AC card. So the screen and the WiFi is not state-of-the-art top of the line! At these price points, compromises have to be made somewhere, and as long as the compromises are not below average or critical, the devs did a good job. I called about the delayed shipping and got $90 off my system. That means, after my student discount and the sale price, I got a Haswell 4710, a Maxwell 4gb 860m, 16gb of L Ram, a hybrid 1tb drive, a built-in-subwoofer, a backlit keyboard, and a touchscreen for $1218 before tax.
I'm a greedy child if I complain! -
I know how you feel....all of these delays are pathetic, and Lenovo is really ruining its image for me. If the computer is as powerful as it looks, has a decent screen, and doesn't have huge heating problems or any malfunctions, I'll forgive them. But right now I don't feel that thrilled. It's hard to stay super excited and optimistic about a product when you're told you can only get it in a month and you feel the company stringing you along without any compensation.
In addition to that, my current laptop just got majorly messed up a few days ago! Maybe it's a stroke of fate that it happened after I ordered a new machine, but my screen went from being totally fine to occasionally flickering and drawing weird lines everywhere to being completely black all the time (the backlight still works but no colours display). Luckily, the computer still works when plugged into an external display, but it's annoying having only one large display for work. And whenever I go to my summer course, the laptop is completely unusable. It's an Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820 and it was a fantastic computer for 4 years (for my purposes, which was university, movies, and some casual gaming), but now sadly it's biting the dust.
So basically, I need a new computer ASAP and all of these delays with the Y50 are pissing me off. At this point I would gladly compromise and get the i7-4700 processor and 8GB RAM and 2GB VRAM if it meant a guarantee that I would get my laptop within 2 weeks. But I do really want the SSD and highly doubt that switching my order would get me anything sooner - at least now I have the advantage of being one of the first people to order...I doubt I can get any model within 2 weeks in Canada no matter what I compromise on or how much I pay, lol.
The only benefit here is that I'll know for sure whether the 4GB GTX860 is Maxwell and how the screen quality is and how hot the laptop gets and every other question I could have long before I get it. So if something turns me off in the next 2 weeks or another great laptop comes along, I have ample time to jump ship.
I started looking at other laptops again and unfortunately it still looks the Y50 is my best bet, delays or not.
The ASUS N550JK is interesting because I could go buy one right this instant right here in Canada if I wanted to. They have 2 of those within a 5 minute walk from me (at Canada Computers). The screen and cooling would definitely be much, much better than on the Y50. Probably better battery life too. And the laptop has quite a nice design, despite not looking quite as cool as the Y50. What's turning me off though are reports of lousy sound quality (the Y50's great sound and built-in subwoofer are much better), the extra pound of weight (at >6 pounds it is a pretty heavy beast...I have to carry this thing around all day and 6 pounds may not be as portable as I'd like, especially coming from a 13.3" laptop), the hard-to-see combination of white backlight on white keyboard, and of course the useless DVD drive that just adds thickness and doesn't contribute anything other than making the laptop feel less solid. I dunno...maybe I'll go and ask to play around with the computer in the store - perhaps the great screen can make up for the flaws. Apart from the N550JK though, what other options do I have that are actually available in Canada right now? I was looking forward to finally being able to emulate Gamecube and Xbox games so I need at least a regular voltage i7-4702 processor and a decent graphics card. I don't want to buy a pricy Ultrabook just to find out that it can't actually run Dolphin emulator with its low-voltage processor. I'd rather suffer for a month with my broken screen and wait for the Y50,,,Any suggestions, guys? -
ARCTURAR - Did the screen change when you tilted it? Did it happen after the laptop was hit or knocked? Did any of the colours change? I'm no technician or anything, but I had a case with this laptop where almost everything became a staticy green which'd become worse on tilting and it flickered etc, but even when black the backlight was on. Is it possible that the wire connecting the screen and the rest of the laptop has come loose/disconnected? This is what I had to replace. Although I obviously don't know for sure and don't know the hardware of your laptop it might be worth looking into as if it's just unplugged it'd be a simple fix (if your laptop allows easy access to it).
-
Well a switch to something is inevitable as I already returned the Q550LF, it's just a matter of what I'm switching to. While nice, I'm not overly concerned about the storage options, as I'll have enough to suit my needs whether I go with whatever stock drive I end up with or aftermarket drive I swap in if that's deemed necessary.
As far as the display goes, it's not so much the viewing angles with me, it's just the quality of display itself. The colors, etc on the Asus were just fantastic. It made the 2008 Dell XPS m1530 I'm barely surviving on at the moment look like an Apple IIe (I may be exaggerating a tad..). It's also why I prefer gloss over matte, however unpopular here, as I just really like how the display pops through, which is something that is typically lost through a matte display. Maybe I'm a sucker for aesthetics, but I also think the edge-to-edge glass displays are just a lot more attractive than a framed matte, and any glare that may have occurred when using the Q550LF didn't really bother me.
All that said, given the number of superior features in the Y50 compared to current competitors, I've been trying my best to warm up to a lesser display hah. The posts here have been second to none helping in that decision. -
But the 7260 is listed in the HMM (page 91) as a potential part for this, unless I'm reading the parts list wrong.
-
Am I one of the only guys that don't care about the viewing angles and the quality as long as it's 1080p? I care about the gaming experience and a tn panel makes it less expensive and lowers power consumption. I also do lots of Photoshop and Sony Vegas win my Y500 with no petpeaves . I hope they don't decrease the quality of the display because if it's worse than my 2012 y500, I'll be disappointed.

Well I didnt care much earlier till I got used to IPS panels and got spoiled. Now I cannot look at a sub par TN panel without thinking how much better or improved the experience of using the laptop would be with a better screen.
Coz finally in the end, visual trumps everything and how good is a game with better graphics and settings if its going to look washed out in the end.
Just my 2 cents since this is subjective like audiophiles(more pronounced for visuals) who swear they by their expensive headphones while others may not even notice the difference or understand what these guys are raving about unless they are used to it and learn to spot the difference or even experience it. -
So we don't go through this again-
"I'm laughing at people who force themselves to buy laptops with crap specs with a good design. I would pay $600 more for quality and better specs on GS60 or Gigabyte P35W v2."
My response - The specs for the price are actually insanely good on the Y50. Lenovo is known to have better build quality than Gigabyte anyway.ChowMeow and fantasticzig like this. -
I see your perspective, if I saw 4k everyday I might judge anything lower quality and can't stand it. I mean gaming on the Y500 FHD isn't that bad because the screen is vibrant but then again maybe some colors aren't there. I don't believe it's screen is washed out though. I think people shouldn't look at the Chinese or Bulgarian reviews because those are different prototypes from the US I presume.
-
You bring up a good point. I totally know what you mean about the audiophile thing, only certain people recognize the differences. If you want IPS, its looking like the 4K will have it.
-
When I think audiophiles, I think of people that wear and think beats is the best brand lol
-
Well the Y50 beats the GS60 or Gigabyte P35Wv2 from a value standpoint or performance per price comparison with the specs it has.
You are comparing laptops from two different classes here as a $600 difference is nothing to snort about and nearly the price of a normal laptop.
Ofcourse you can always pay extra for quality but for people on limited budget, the Y50 is a much more feasible buy.
Word! Unless you experience a brand like say Hifi/Sennheiser etc which offers much better value for money and realize that you have been paying for brand value all along, those ppl will never wake up or break the cycle.H01D3N likes this. -
Hifi, Sennheisers, and Sol Republic are my favorite brands. By the way the speakers on my Y500 are fairly loud and crystal clear so expect above average quality on the Y50
-
Guys I currently have a MacBook Pro late 2011 (which is why I'm upgrading) and I was wondering what is the screen difference between the y50 and MacBook?
-
Okay what about a p35k ( GIGABYTE P35K-CF1 Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 750GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8 - Newegg.com) comparison to the y50 (base model),I have gotten shaken on the y50. Man i wish we had a real in depth review. : (

Let's wait and see for ourselves what the screen is like before jumping to any conclusions.

P35 has a smaller hard drive, not as good GPU, and worse build quality than the Y50. Someone will eventually post a review on here that you can see.

Gigabyte does not have the best build quality plus the thing is bulky, Lenovo is creating a machine that is powerful and portable sure we do not have a any formal reviews on it yet but if the screen is decent and temps are good then the GS60 and Gigabyte can suck it.
This is a thread for those who are interested in this machine, I personally have a 4 year old T410 which has never had an issue and look/runs as good as the day I bought it. So if Lenovo does well with the Y50 and actually ships the darn thing then I am sold. -
This thread is about the Lenovo Y50, as stated in the thread title, and pointed out repeatedly by other members -- and recently by moderators. Please respect that or stay away.

I was just using it one day and the colours suddenly starting turning more yellow/green in some places. And then it all started flickering like crazy and showed static everywhere. What was really weird though was that when I manually switched graphics cards from the Radeon HD5470 to the integrated Intel ones, the display fixed itself and was fine! It seemed like it couldn't have been a problem with the Radeon card because it worked perfectly on an external display, so I was just confused. Anyways, two days ago even the integrated graphics switch stopped working and instead of a static-y green display it is just entirely black all the time. Also happened just out of the blue.
Your suggestion about the wire may be a good one though: the one big flaw in my laptop's build quality is that the edge of the aluminum lid is actually a thin plastic band. Maybe for easier wireless signal, though I don't see how it's necessary if Macbooks can be unibody metal and recieve wifi just fine. Anyways, that plastic band has been wobbling and coming off for a long time now; I can nowactually see the back of my display if I look through the top of the screen when the plastic band is jutting out. I see some wire connecting the plastic band to some component behind the display, and it's very possible that this is where the problem lies. I'll look at it more closely when I get home after trying the obvious fixes like cleaning out dust from the laptop and such. Thanks for the idea, especially if it works! With a visible screen, waiting for the Y50 wouldn't even be so bad. -
Please do a side by side comparison and post what you think when you get yours. I actually liked the y500 and y510p screens a lot.
