First of all, let me tell you that I have seen that exact XPS 15 model in person. Fastest.Boot.Ever. Seriously, for no SSD, I booted it in about 14 seconds. The XPS screen has really nice color to it, but is glossy screen. It doesn't reflect artificial light nearly as much as other glossy displays, but definitely more than matte. The QHD+ display is nice, but not necessary. The 860M beats the 750M any day, although it has been said that the GDDR5 version is on par with a 765M. I would go with the Y50, but the aesthetics of the XPS are extremely nice. I would consider the XPS a great option, but not a great $1800 option. Go with Y50 through Klick.

We'll just canceled my order, over two weeks and it was still "released to manufacturing" Going to order from Klick once they release the hold from my card, for those who canceled how long did this take?

I cancelled mine to order from Klick too, the pending charge dropped after about 48 hours, but mine had also not been sent to manufacturing.

Lol that means they purposely tried to scare me when they said that it would take 3-5 business days to cancel. Shame on you lenovo reps. Hopefully it will only take 2 days to cancel as I would be able to order on Monday then instead of waiting till Wednesday.

Hmm yea I got the old 3 to 5 days or it may not cancel and your device will ship. Doubting that since my ship date just moved out to June 17th from the 9th. Honestly Lenovo seems clueless as to what they are doing leaving a bad taste for me, I hope Klick gets a ton of business due to Lenovo's shortfalls.

I want to do a fresh install of Windows on my Y50 (it is coming preinstalled with Windows AFAIK).

Where can I find the drivers? Are they all available to download?

Google is your friend, but: Y50 Non-Touch Drivers. I'd think Windows Update would find most of those though.

That said, why not just do a refresh? Windows 8 Settings -> Update and Recovery -> Refresh

Lenovo is not great with cancels - we've had to cancel some of our orders in the past and they still shipped days later, and there was one time we even received cancellation emails, and they shipped like two weeks later.

Question: Does anyone know what kind of RAM the Y50 has and if there's 1x 8GB stick or does it have 2x 4GB sticks? I want to upgrade the 8GBs of RAM to 16GB, but if there's 2x 4GB sticks I want a cheap 16GB kit. Can anyone link me to a cheap upgrade for RAM please? Thank You

In return I can do a disassembly and tutorial when I get my model in 1.5 weeks.

Not anymore. You could try a fresh install using boot from USB. You would have to have a 32GB flash drive with a copy of Windows on it. ArgentWren is right with his refresh idea. If you don't mind, why do you plan on doing a Windows reinstall?

I have recently gotten the top of the line XPS 15 so I can address some of the points you raised. First though, consider Dell Outlet -> I have gotten my top of the line (with the 512GB SSD) for about $1600 before tax. It was $1836 in the outlet and when I called they gave me a 10% more off. And its the same system. So outlet & chat/call :). Also - consider extended warranty - always good thing with ultra portables & Dell is superb in their service.

    LOOK & FEEL:
    - The build quality and looks are amazing. Definitely better than Y50 unless you really look for gaming laptop. For anything but that and especially the office/professional use this thing is a killer.
    - I love typing on the XPS - the keyboard is superb and the soft touch around it is great too. I don't miss the number keys - but that's just me.
    - The screen is really something else. Now I really can't go back to 1080p. Yes you can see the difference :). The colours are fantastic. And touch is superb - don't use it all the time, but its really cool when you do.
    - The coil whine is there unfortunately. It was really high high pitch thing that was very annoying. I called them, they replaced the motherboard (and, effectively everything - CPU, GPU too because its soldered) and now its different - still there but not as annoying. Will see if I can really get rid of it.
    - ITS LIGHT!!! That's one of the biggest plus I see over the Y50.

    PERFORMANCE:
    - It flies :). Regular tasks are no problem & the computer stays very silent. Also there is new model coming up any time now with updated i7-4712HQ CPU - not that it is much of an upgrade but it might be a refresh solving the coil whine and it will give you a bit more power.
    - As far as GPU the 750m is a bottleneck and I so wish it was 850m, but it does the job. Dota 2 at 1142p maxed out @60FPS, Witcher 2 tweaked high settings with 1 level of ubersampling at 900p 30-45fps, you can run 1080p if you turn off the ubersampling. If you are ok with not maxing things out it will be ok. No throttling issues so far. GPU goes up to 81C max. First GPU stayed constantly overclocked by Nvida @1058MHz (stock 950MHz), the new motherboard drops to 940MHz sometimes but that could be because the thermal paste is not set yet.
    - Don't count on the lower end model giving you 6 hours straight up. I think I get 6 hours with the top model on balanced settings & low brightness when browsing internet and playing some videos. If you don't play the videos you might be fine - I haven't done any heavy testing. Point in case, you will get better battery probably than Y50 even with the mid model, but the battery life will depend on usage type.

To summarize: The only thing that would make me switch to Y50 would be great screen and good battery life. And even than I would be concerned about weight. 4.4lbs is light for 15.6" but its still 4.4lbs :) I can't really imagine hauling 6lbs laptop + charger all day. This is just a preference, but I feel that's something a lot of people here forget. It's always a tradeoff and it's about what's important to you.

Nope; also, you can reinstall with USB nowadays. You can even use the command line to make a custom refresh image once you have your PC set up the way you want it.

Since there are 16GB versions available, I assume it's a single stick 8 GB. And it's DDR3L RAM.

Not true. If you can live with 30+fps and not constant 60, you can do Dota 2 maxed out @1800p running 30-37fps. Generally speaking you are right - there is huge performance gap and things like Crysis won't run on high even @1080p, but I really don't like when people who have not done their own testing claim something that simply is not true ;)

I want to get rid of all bloatware... And maybe any NSA spying garbage ;)

So what you're saying is if I do a refresh all of the drivers will remain intact? Or will everything be deleted?

Makes me wonder if it was all a well-played marketing ploy.

You'd think at least ONE person would have taken a single photo, not just simple or vague descriptions like a blind person trying to describe the statue of liberty in vivid detail. No offense to the guys here (or blind people), I mean in general for people across the web. /bitter rant

There have been two people in this thread that have received their laptops in the last couple of days. One addressed all the basic concerns (build quality, trackpad, wireless card etc) and is most likely currently busy changing/installing all their stuff as it was only today they tried to change wireless cards. The other put up a photo and mentioned the heat being fine as that was being mentioned a lot. They haven't given us a full in depth review but they might not even know how - I know that if I received mine tomorrow I wouldn't be able to do some of the comparisons and the like that is being asked in this thread - they were lucky to get theirs early, doesn't make them qualified to help us out, and they fact they even bothered is nice enough. Hopefully once more laptops come through in the next few days from Klick etc we will have reviews from people who have the time and/or the knowledge to do it, but it really hasn't been that long since the first couple started arriving, but waiting for it all is making it feel like forever.

I'd say for practical use, the XPS 15 is one of the best laptops on the market for sure if you disregard price..

what? for practical use there are tons of other workstations that you can get if you disregard the price. other ultrabooks and MBP for office use are way more practical than our gaming notebooks, if we disregard the price

Good news, at least if your Canadian! I've been hounding several different reps and they all came back with the same ship date of 6/6, only a week away! Taken with a grain of salt, but I'm hopeful.

Edit: I got the base model on the day of release with 500GB SSHD. (Not available in the US) So it is possible that I might get it before some people who ordered the 1TB model before me.

I just got mine in but I'm a little hammered.. I'm typing on it now in fact.. I will say, the screen is not that great, but the laptop is solidly built and very fast.. I need to give this a day or so before I actually get used to the screen.. It's about on par with my 2010 E-Series Sony Vaio(in terms of screen quality) which I imagine is not great by today's standards if you want a high grade laptop.. I will try to get pics out either later today or tomorrow.. The touchpad is actually pretty awesome though I will admit.. Not the best ever, but definitely should be clear of any complaints at this point. The KB is very slim and will take some getting used to as I'm used to my mechanical KB on my desktop.. Very slim and again, solidly build with smooth aluminum on the outer base, while the KB is build with solid and very smooth plastic..

It comes with a good deal of crappy bloatware that I'm sure most of you guys will delete along with me, but I think we should expect that from any commercial laptop aside from a sager. And again, it's very solidly built, with a nice slick design for everyday use.. Most people won't mistake this for some alienware which s a good think in my book.. I also have no complaints of the wireless card, as it picks up all my speeds properly and no drops so far.. I don't think there is any reason to upgrade it..

I know I'm complaining about the screen a little bit, but maybe me being a little drunk has something to do with it.. :D

Yay more people have it! And yeah, testing screen quality is probably a little harder with alcohol in your system haha. I'm really glad about the solid build, that was one of the things I needed the most. Whenever you get around to looking at it properly for us, could you mention how good the audio is? Both with and without head/earphones, I'd be super grateful. But for now just enjoy :D

Also, I like it when a laptop has bloatware. Obviously I take it off but that takes very little time and it being on there almost always means it's a bit cheaper than it would be.

Dont want to sound rude but if I were one of the dudes that got the Y50 days before, and even if I had an extremly bussy life, I would at least take 5 minutes to take some quick snaps with my phone and upload them from the phone itself, that would really help people here and would not cost toooo much effort... sighs

Like I said before, one of the two who got it DID upload a picture. Plus there are a good few images of it already online - how it ran was more important as we didn't have that info and timothyz still took time out to let us know that.

Which model did you get? If it was the base we knew it was matte and the vast majority are happy about that - glare sucks. It really really sucks.

That is a positive thing for me :)

Can you please take your phone and upload some pics pretty please? :D you can do reviews and tests later if your want, but for now pics only would REALLY help a LOT of people here. Sorry if I am asking too much.

    Thank you good sir!

Not really, we got only one low ress picture of the final product, and thats all what we have, interwebz have plenty of comercial, artificial, old/prototipe pictures but the only one of the real final product was the one Tim uploaded. We need more from various angles. Of course I want tests too but I know that will take more time, but for pictures is quick.

Yes - XPS 15 for me is the perfect blend of power/looks/portability/professionalism. If you don't need the dedicated GPU than get some other ultrabooks, perhaps even smaller. But if you want something profesisonal, portable with dedicated GPU, you can't beat XPS 15. Unless you are a big fan of OSX and you want it over windows. In that case, get MBP. They are both very comparable - so much so that I would say XPS 15 is the MBP of Windows (dell definitely copied a lot :)).

?? I've tested both a 750M and an 860M. I'm pretty positive the 860M was significantly better. So what exactly are you saying isn't true? Yeah, I guess if you think dota 2 is a good game to use as a baseline and if you think 30fps is acceptable then maybe yeah I guess everyone should be happy with a 750M.

Edit: I've also tested the 870M at 1800p and I can say that I'm not all that impressed with how it handles. It's great, don't get me wrong, but I think we still have another year before mobile graphics can handle QHD+ screens. That said, I don't think the 750M is good for a 1800p screen for gaming. Sorry...

"Forget games under 5 years old." ? I'm not saying Dota 2 is a baseline, but its not 5 years old and it will run on that resolution. And I did (and still do) agree that 750m is not good for 1800p gaming - heck for the demanding titles it's not good for 1080p :). XPS is not a gaming laptop so the QHD+ screen makes sense since its not for games mostly.

Ok, well when you put it that way, I guess not ALL games under 5 years old. :) I only meant it as an analogy to how extreme most major titles are these days. I'm sure Angry Birds Star Wars plays phenomenally too hehe

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic here?

Bummer that you're sold out of the base model for now. I've been on the verge of pulling the trigger for the last 72 hours, but I've been waiting for one of these early buyers to post more than a two-sentence review. I'm really shocked that one of these people hasn't taken advantage of their early place in line to make the "definitive" Y50 unboxing video and then the first Y50 review video on YouTube. How hard would it be? Everyone has a video camera on their smart phone these days.

It's pretty big, but nothing that should stand out..

Didn't realize those pics were full size like that. Can't people zoom out and view it at decent resolution?

Looks good as is, no worries. Did you own the previous models by any chance?

My previous model is a 2010 E-Series Sony Vaio, which is actually a very good laptop.. It can even run a good deal of games..

Ah too bad. I'm hoping someone with the previous model can compare screens and trackpads. Hoping the screen is at least the same and the trackpad is better.

Obviously I haven't gamed with it yet, but you can tell it will run very hot once you do so.. I browsed a bit on a couch and bed and it will heat up a bit.. So I believe those reports 100% sadly.. I figured with the Maxwell, it would run cooler than most gaming laptops, but I guess the slim form factor and subwoofer will cause it to run hot..
