More vram for your graphics card is only beneficial to high resolution gaming. 2gb should be more than enough for 1080p.

Watching all these videos kills me... I CCANT WAAIT FOR MY LAPTOP TO COME

If the 4GB Version isnt slower than the 2gb version, the 4GB Version is definitely a good idea.
Especially the newer Games like Watch Dogs and Titanfall make use of more than 2 gb of VRAM!
Considering playing games in 1-2 years the 4gb version is worth the extra money ;)
Nice Laptop anyway, its very hard to get any pictures of the interriors.
Does it only have 1 2,5" slot? Has it an additional msata / M.2 slot ?

Although I guess the product key is weitten beneath laptop, I still am confused... I am sorry if this topic has already been discussed , if it has please provide me a link for the page or something, I couldn't find it....

An answer for one of your questions, you don't need to do fresh install if you can connect your new ssd as an external harddrive. This is possible if you have usb connector to your laptop. Then you need to clone the image of the original harddisk to your new ssd. I forget what software to do disk cloning but it's pretty easy to find one with google.

So people are saying that there is a locked clock speed on the Y50's 860m - does this mean I can't OC at all??? I wanted a 5% OC, especially the memory...

I joined just to ask if anyone has ordered the $1450 y50 with 512 GB SSD & 16GB RAM? Have you received it or been given a firm ship date?

I want to order this model, but the problem is I NEED (not want, need) to have a new laptop in my hands no more than 1 month from now. Lenovo site still says 3-4 weeks for this model to ship. I know I could buy the base model and stick a SSD into it, but I'd rather not deal with this and I think the extra $300 for the SSD & the extra RAM is an ok deal. Anyone know when Lenovo will start pumping these out?

I ordered the y50 touch and swapped the hhsd for a Samsung Evo 512ssd. The magician software (d/l off Samsung website) is super easy and cloned everything fine. I ordered directly from Lenovo received the laptop within 4 days.

I also bought an enclosure: Sabrent USB 3.0 To 2.5-Inch Sata Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Case (for 9.5mm, 12.5mm 2.5-Inch SATA-I, SATA-II, SATA-III HDD and SSD) Black (EC-TB4P):Amazon:Computers & Accessories

So i didn't need an external cd drive.

p.s I want to thank everybody on this thread for their comments and the video reviews thus helping me in deciding to get the y50!

Using 3d mark 11 demo I had got 4800 before and 5000 after. The driver was not the only setting I change between the 2 but i dont think the others would affect it that much.

Just search for the HDMI 1.4 spec. I've heard talk this could be patched to HDMI 2.0 via software, but that's up to the specific implementation so I wouldn't count on it. If 4k output is crucial, a laptop with Displayport like the GS60 would be better.

Someone convince me to get the SSD model or the touch screen model. Also is it worth the wait to get the 4710 over the 4700?

Notvworth the wait imho. I'd get base touchscreen or base non touch and cram in a crucial mx100 512 gb for only 200 bucks more.

4710 isn't a big deal. Touch screen is a weight-adding personal preference, but I would add that it is a nice "bonus feature" even for those who typically don't use it (the Windows 8 store apps and metro environment really is built for touch, and is far simpler to navigate that way). The touch screen is, bluntly, prettier, both in terms of design aesthetics (edge to edge glass with no apparent raised bezel, and in terms of functional appearance (colors pop more; vibrancy/luminance have an amplified effect from a glossy finish). People complain about reflections, but you rarely hear those same people complain of the same problem on their smart phones or tablets.

I vote touch. It's just prettier, and the functionality is definitely not a fad, certainly not going the way of the dinosaur; quite the opposite.

if you get the SSD model, you won't be able to upgrade to a nice vibrant touchscreen but if you get the touchscreen model, you may upgrade your SSHD to and SSD whenever you want.

for BF players out there, I have heard that BF does go over the 2gb vram quite frequently, so I am guessing the extra vram should help in BF at least.

SSD is usually worth it especially if you don't mind a slight downgrade in space.. I'm curious now, does the Samsun Evo allow easy transfer from your previous HDD in comparison to competing SSDs?

The cloning process is made quite easy by samsung because of the software they give with the ssd... although its a bit costly than crucial.... I saw a 512gb crucial on newegg for like 220 bucks.....

The MX100. It was just released as the successor to the M500. Much more affordable and same or better performance.

only problem i got is that i don't know how to get a Y50 shipped to my country.
klick is not offering the discount when it's shipped here.
that supposed to be discount is what i'm actually gonna use to pay for the customs duties/taxes which i'm not even familiar with.
i want to get the highest end model of the touchscreen and just upgrade my SSHD to an SSD when i already have an extra cash.

    People people...

Why upgrade SSD yourself when there is a nice SSD offer from Lenovo themselves with the highest model.
You not only get the 512 SSD but also +2 VRAM and +8 GB RAM for 300 bucks. And you don't have to mess around

As for touch, Windows 8 has forced a new wave of trend to have touch on a laptop. Personally I will never get a touch-laptop, ever. I know some people who have one and they NEVER use it. It's a gimmick

Sure it can be useful for the "Windows 8 Start Menu" but that's where the problem begins. Why use that start menu? Check this out:

StartIsBack - real start menu for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqUAg3cQxQo

It makes your windows 8 usable like windows 7 but with windows 8 speed and improvements. With a thing called mouse you can then navigate around and it's awesome.

everyone's got a different preferences. as for me, i like the touch model because of the additional option when i feel like touching it and how it looks more premium and how the screen looks like.

as for putting an SSD on the base model, we're on the same foot. but i was also looking it at their point of view.
they must have known that they don't LIKE or NEED that extra 2GB of VRAM and +8GB RAM and they need the built in SSHD as external storage after upgrading to SSD.

isn't/is it cheaper to pick the base model and upgrade the SSD and use the 1tb SSHD as your external than to buy the highest end 512gb model and buy 1tb external storage device?

Ok one last thing and I'm confused by this, the SSHD that is included in the base models, if they are 5400 RPM, wouldn't that make it a basic slow HDD? I thought it was a HDD with 8 gb or so SSD tacked on?? The reason I ask is because I could possibly put this thing in my PS4 should I replace it in my Lenovo.. The PS4 has a basic 512 GB 5400 HDD..

this has been explained many times in the thread. the 8gb ssd serves as a cache to store your most frequently used files, mostly .dll so on your most commonly used applications you'll see a near-ssd performance boost

I wouldn't knock the non-touch too heavily. Glare can be REALLY annoying on glossy screens if you're the type that will be using your laptop in a wide range of environments. Sometimes you're in rooms with lots of glare from overheads or sunlight and it makes doing work a real pain. If this is just an entertainment laptop for you then this will probably be less of an issue, but a lot of folks will probably get this because its a basic enough look to still carry to work.

that's just model number. there are y50-70 and even y50-80, which has nothing to do with y70. all the y70 pics are coming from an event in which lenovo took people to visit their labs and y70 was on the abandoned prototype designs shelf

I got the same thing, but I believe it was because I was trying to cancel my order. To be sure though, I recommend calling the Credit Card Services number they have, 1-800-426-3325. When I was trying to talk to an online rep, they said to go through them if it says customer action. But either way at least go to an online rep or call that number to check up on your order.

I tend to believe what you said more than the online chat rep... I suspect the pre authorization for my Credit card expired.

    Online chat said.

Me: it was Released to manufacturing until today then status said Customer Action

Anwesh R: It is done with the manufacturing and it is ready to ship.

Anwesh R: You will get an e-mail, if the machine got shipped

Okay, how the heck are you guys getting such high scores?

I ran the 3DMark Demo with...
+ Latest Nvidia Driver (NOT 332.50)
    + High Performance Battery Mode
+ Nvidia Image Settings to "Performance"
+ Msi Afterburner OC on (1232Mhz was the clock on the GPU)
+ Razer Game Booster on the 3DMark Demo
+ I even disabled my touch screen lol
