My Y50 (the version with the optical drive, i7 4710HQ 2.50GHz, 8GB of RAM, and 4GB 860m) just shipped! Shipping 10 days sooner than the estimated ship date? Not bad, Lenovo, not bad. Of course, the original estimate (four weeks out from the order date) was pretty pathetic.

Now let's see what sort of optical drive Lenovo sends me... It had better be Blu-ray.

Have any of the y50 owners figured out how to upgrade the nvidia card yet? Also, do you guys think there will be a noticeable gaming performance boost after you update it?

Not that I know of, but I've been trying to research ways to modify an .inf correctly to get it going -- although I ran into this, which is kind of upsetting.

Heads up that we are getting another batch of the Base Non-Touch Y50's late next week - special NBR pricing will be in effect on these until we get through some stock. PM or email.

*Bump I have the same issue. I tried manually scanning my system, nvidia experience, and using other sites with the driver to no avail. I haven't tried deleting the driver because I'm afraid I won't be able to get it back. I posted this on the Nvidia Forum for help: https://forums.geforce.com/default/...860m-maxwell-unable-to-install-latest-driver/

Has anyone tried to download the latest beta driver to see if that would work at all?

    1. download 337.88 first, install it, it will say it's incompatible first, but ignore that
remember where the installer files are located

    2. then go to displaydriver > 337.88 > win8 > international

    then download this
    https://mega.co.nz/#!BtUQxY6b!OsJDBZ_W56sV6iQ_iuhUj_ID4klCMQ5UEyUSY1eNEAI

place it in display.driver as shown in the pic above, this is the MOST important step
since lenovo's not registered in driver, you have to add it manually and the above file does that

*EDIT: the location may depending on where you chose to keep the installer files, but regardless you'll the place that file into Display.Driver folder

    3. go to your settings and then disable driver signing

to learn more check out How to Disable Driver Signature Verification on 64-Bit Windows 8.1 (So That You Can Install Unsigned Drivers)

then reboot your computer, click setup and install again

now you won't have to worry about installing drivers in the future

delete the previous driver folder, reinstall the the installer files, make sure you replace the NVLTi.txt with the one I gave you and BE 100% CERTAIN THAT YOU DISABLED DRIVER SIGNING and rebooted your PC

This question has been asked several pages before but I can't find it:
How's the performance of the 5400rpm HDD?
I'm planning to use this laptop for C++ and OpenGL programming but I had bad experience with my old 5400 rpm WD Caviar Green.
I hope Y50's HDD is fast enough because Visual Studio performs HDD IO all time.
NB: I still don't have the budget for SDD and the country where I am don't sell Y50 SSD version

the performance is just like any regular hard drive. the 8gb cache will only store your most commonly used files. random reads are not really supported

I'm going to buy a SSD for my lenovo y50. 5400 rpm is 5400 rpm. Cold boot is about 12-13 seconds. Takes FOREVER to load a bf4 map.

    Nice Driver update instruction. Thanks.

This is my first "Gaming" laptop. I've always had a powerful desktop for development. I am curious. This thing only has an HDMI and to my surprise I can't get the full glory of my 2560x1440 display due to the limitations on the monitor in regards to the HDMI input. I've tried some adapters from HDMI to DVI but still no dice. Is that laptop actually capable of driving an external monitor above 1920x1080? Anybody have any ideas?

what's the wiser option? shall i get the 512GB SSD model or the base model and just buy that samsung evo that ALMOST everyone's talking about?
isn't it just the same (in terms of performance) as the 512gb ssd that comes with the highest end model and considering that the samsung SSD is i think worth more than $300 while the highest end also got a 512gb SSD with 4gb of VRAM and 16gb of RAM?

btw, why is KingFireJet's Y50 got a 16GB of SSD on his SSHD? isn't is supposed to have only 8GB?

If you're going to be adding a 512GB SSD and RAM anyway, I'd go with the pre-installed option from Klick. It's basically the exact same price as you'd pay to do it yourself on the base model AND you get the 4GB VRAM. I don't know if the extra graphics memory will be useful during the life of the laptop - I'm expecting not - but if it doesn't cost anything then I'll take it.

1080p at 60hz is the maximum for the HDMI 1.4 port on the y50. It can do 4k, but only at 30hz so it'll work for movies/projectors but probably not something you want to try for games.

Thanks a lot. I tried to setup a "custom resolution" and managed to get 2560x1440 @40hz. How did you know about the limitations and specs? Is it listed someplace?

FYI. All of you thinking of an SSD... I would consider the Crucial MX100 512GB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Internal SSD. It was just released last week for $224.99. They are available at Crucial.

Has anyone reset their laptop to remove the lenovo bloatware? If so, the factory reset, will I need windows 8.1 on a thumbdrive or will I be able to just do it through settings and not have to worry about anything? After installing the nvidia driver, I feel like my computer got a bit slower and now the fan is running more frequently than I remember.

Yeah I just noticed that Crysis 3 is running very choppy under high settings compared to the previous driver which ran it smooth. Also the 'nvidia experience' application is still showing the previous driver as the installed version for some reason.

    Question:

When I am holding down the backspace button, the speed at which the text is deleted is very slow. Each letter is slowly deleted and then it proceeds onto the next letter.
This also applies when I hold down a key and the letter is written over and over. Usually it comes out like rapid fire. Right now it is very slow.

    Is this a Windows feature?

    The MBP is 15.4"
There is an increase in width of 1" between the two.
Is that an acceptable leeway for sleeves?
This is the only sleeve that looks good, I couldn't find any other 15.6" laptop sleeve similar to this

Although I don't often play AAA games these days, does more VRAM have significant performance improvement?
There are GTX 860 2G and GTX 860 4GB. Based on my understanding, VRAM is related to frame buffer / texture.
