@Character Zero ok thanks. Also I just found that my y500 has the ELAN touchpad:confused. Now so far its been fine but does anyone else have a new y500 with the ELAN touchpad and if so how's yours working? And I know mines not the old batch of not working ones because its a newly made one with the 750ms.
-
what's windows 8 like without a touchscreen?
-
The new ones have Synaptics Touch pad .. my date of manufacture says April 28
-
Hmmm where do you find the date of manufacture I have the exact same notebook as you but when I look at my mouse settings it says ELAN.
-
I believe it is under the battery.. Look there
-
Installed windows 7 and cant seem to find what program to install to get the volume icons to show up on screen?
-
I recently ordered a y500 with the gt750m SLI. How do you think it will be able to run battlefield 4?
-
According to Noteboock check a setup of GT750 SLI should be equal or better than a GTX675. And thankfully the GT750 Memory speed is an astonishing 5000mhz clock so are the shaders at 964mhz.
So I am guessing you can get everything maxed out Ultra in Battlefield 4, but probably No AA and no Ambient Occlusion. And at 1080p I really don't see a need for AA, and Ambient occlusion can only be appreciated during Freeze frame or screenshots. while games are in motion the difference can not be seen or appreciated in real time. -
The same way it handled BF3, which is to say splendidly on High settings at 1080p. With my 650M SLI overclocked to 1120/2250, which makes it a little bit faster than GT 750M SLI at stock, I averaged 63 FPS on High with HBAO, 16X AF, no FXAA or MSAA, no motion blur, 70 FoV, and 1080p. Those are the settings I play at and it stays around 60 FPS constant (I use an FPS cap) even in big 64-player multiplayer battles. It might dip as low as the 40's temporarily when there's a lot of smoke or fire or explosions around me.

Didnt know this was a marketplace..
-
Is it expected that the y500 will now see a price cut because of the launch of y510p.
I feel that both existing together isnt sensible.
Any insider news? -
You can already get it for cheap.. Call them
-
Ordered a y500 a month ago and its going to ship on the 25th of this month
3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor( 2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
15.6" FHD LED Glossy Wedge 1920x1080
16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
1TB 5400 RPM+16GB SSD
750m Nividia Sli
-------With a 3 year inhome and accidental warranty
This is all for $1300
Now the new y510p is out and I got a quote for one with these specs
4th Generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor (2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
15.6" FHD LED Anti-Glare Wedge 1920x1080
16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
1TB 5400 RPM+24GB SSD
750m Nividia Sli
---------With 3 year inhome and accidental warranty
All this comes to $1500 and it ships 6/14/13, so basically $200 for a better screen, supposedly better battery life, and the haswell cpu and its also thinner. Should I cancel my order and spring for the new version? -
Easily cancel and call them. TRUST ME YOU CAN GET BETTER PRICING!
-
Already chatted with them and they are firm on the prices on the new model. I was able to get the ideadeal discount and a student discount for -$350. I don't think I can get it down further unless someone else is possibly better at chatting and will get me a better quote for me???
-
get it on newegg way better deal! i can get it for 1050$ on newegg.
-
i got y510p w/ student discount that came with 2yr warranty, mouse, and case for about the same price you did.
-
damn that is a really great deal haha.
-
Just got the top of the line y510p with a student discount and the ideadeal discount and the free mouse and case and the best warranty for 1500
-
Why in the world you guys would go through the hassle of returning it and paying a couple hundred dollars more for a marginally better new model is beyond me...
-
Cuz OMG I must haz newest computaarrrrrr!!!
But seriously $1500 for a Y510p is too much IMO. You could easily go to a boutique website and customize your own system with an i7 and 8970M for that kind of dough and it would knock the socks off of 750M SLI. -
A top of the line Y500 (with 16GB ram+SLI) costs <$1000 in Canada if you know where to look. I was interested in the Y510p, but no longer if it's going to cost that much... I just spoke to a Lenovo rep and he said the new model isn't launching for a few more weeks and wouldn't tell me the price except that it would not be the same as my discounted Y500.
-
So the wireless card can't be changed? Or what are the options? I just bought a Killer 1202 and it is saying unauthorized wireless card. I noticed when changing out the mSATA drive it was easy to get to, so I figured why not upgrade it...
-
You need to go to Tech Inferno and flash the unlocked BIOS to remove the hardware whitelist.
-
Finally have mine in, just waiting for the msata to come and an start playing some hi def skyrim (in need of an upgrade for a looooooong time). I remember seeing somewhere some peeps increasing the refresh rate of their screen but I can't find anything with basic searches. Anyone got a direction for me to go?
-
Is there an unlocked BIOS for v2.03?
-
No but there is one for 2.02. You should go over there and submit a copy of your BIOS to svl7 so he can mod it.
-
Drivers and software - IdeaPad Y500 Notebook
the above link is the link to the y500 drivers
Mine (59371965) is on its way and so I was just downloading the updated drivers for it just in case it has old drivers preinstalled.
While downloading I saw the drivers for WIDI and Intel GPU which I guess are simply removed by laser cutting or other hardware mod methods by Lenovo because it was interfering with SLI, so why are the drivers there?
PS: The drivers under Wireless section also host atheros and broadcom. -
Got my y410p for $800 CAD, straight off lenovo's site, dont know where you are coming from lol.
-
Is Y500 Processsor can be upgraded?
-
Hello, I have a lenovo Y500. with 8Gb of RAM, i7-3630 Qm, and a single graphic card nvidia 650m.
I just want to know if I should buy the ultrabay nvidia, and if this think it's worth. I have to buy another power supply?
Please answear me. TY -
Seems the 650m additional gfx card has been permanently discontinued...s. Does anyone here have one they would be willing to sell for a reasonable price?
-
Currently I can buy a Y500 with 8 gig and 1T hard drive or for $70 upgrade to 12 gig and add 16G SSD to the HD. My Alienware M11x r1 ran with 4 gig and handled all my applications just fine. I was thinking that the upgrade was a no-brainer, but a quick look at $65 - $75 60 gig MSATA SSD's on Newegg has me wondering if I should get the lower Y500 and upgrade later. Opinions?
My beloved Alienware M11x died yesterday and I am so disgusted with Dell I'm looking for something else to replace it. I don't play the latest games so I barely need a graphics card but I do want high resolution. A desire for full HD, a backlit kepboard and the generous AICPA discounts direct from Lenovo makes the Ideapad my targeted replacement.
They run different specials every week. The one that ended yesterday had the Y580 and Y510 with better discounts than the Y500. Starting today the Y500 has the best discounts. From what I've read on this forum today there seems no reason not to go with the Y500. -
You must not read a lot.
Pros:
Great Internal components
Cool backli keyboard
Runs not too hot
Cons:
Lenovo could be the most unprofessional company I've ever felt with
Very, very low quality control
Lenovo lies to the customers
Trackpad is "okay" would say a mouse is better
Screen is too reflective
I am positive there are more -
And you apparently didn't read through my first couple sentences as your points are irrelevant to what I wrote and you left unaddressed the one question I asked.
add-> After thinking it over I'm going to get the Y500 without the SSD and order a larger SSD at the same time so that I'll have it from the beginning. RAM upgrade I'll leave for the indefinite future. -
Well, as FSU Logan said, if you are going to be disgusted with Dell then you will want to stay away from Lenovo. Think he might have rubbed you the wrong way with the first sentence but still his post basically outlines what you will be walking into if you go with the Y500/Y510p. Good luck.
-
Riddle me this, are there any PC makers that offer good service? Seriously, who doesn't suck?
I'm getting a lot for my money so I'll have to accept the greater chance of time spent calling and sending the PC in for service. Heck, in general good service disappeared in the 90's.
add-> My own impression has been that Lenovo is one of the best in the quality of their products. Laptop Magazine rated them #1 for 2011-2013 of the "non-Apple" PC manufacturers.
I don't doubt that people have serious problems with Lenovo; I don't doubt that people have serious problems with every manufacturer. As a former CPA and MIS Director who was using CPM computers and Apple II's before IBM got into the personal computer business, I was indeed put out to have a college kid lecture me based on one purchase. Especially when he starts off by criticizing me without even reading my post. I don't see any reason to give him any credence. -
I hear you brother, you're preaching to the preacher. My only goal with you is to lower your expectations. Laptop Magazine is a joke of a magazine if they can rate Lenovo as #1 behind Apple. No freaking way, not the Ideapad line of sh!t they call a product. For most of us, we can't even get a functioning keyboard and touchpad out of the box. How basic is that? Anyway, I digress. Good luck with your purchase.

Just to quote myself from another thread "Goto hp forums acer forum, etc and everybody thinks they have the worst gaming notebook. There's no perfect notebook (especially in this price range). So I've come to the conclusion that people expect $2000+ quality from a -$1000 notebook. I'm a y470p and y500 notebook owner and for the price point I can afford to look past these shortcomings. Could be worse, you could own an acer-3830tg like my ol' lady does an that thing is a quirky bugger. heat issues, manual have to re-enable bluetooth every reboot, sub-par gaming performance than the y470p (y470p was out the same time and was cheaper an includes an optical drive). If you want perfection go buy a high end sager, or alienware. For size and price enjoy it or return it and go elsewhere. "
-
Guesss what? I did return it and it has been over a month without my money.
-
Sorry to hear of your troubles. You have every right to be angry. I think trying everything you can think of to put some pressure on them is fair. I'd get as high as I could by phone and let them know you will be contacting the Federal Trade Commission, the Attorney General of NC and whatever other states they operate in, the appropriate local Better Business Bureaus as well as every forum on the internet that has anything to do with Lenovo. There was a time when the FTC would spank companies that held your money like they are doing. Unfortunately our governments at every level are largely in the pockets of big business and those days are probably past.
-
I am calling the BBB tomorrow.. Good idea with the FTC. I just posted my whole story in another thread in here.. Prepare for a repost:
My experience: Receive Y500 May 1st.. Laptop breaks May 24.. Mail out May 24...Ask for refund May 24... Told 4-5 business days... Way past yet Nothing (June 15)... Call Lenovo (8th time on my cell phone for this... few more times on my home phone)... Told no later June 19th... (I have a freeze on the payment anyways because I knew they'd back door me)... Today is June 22nd and the two Lenovo reps I was "helped" by will not respond to my emails or voice mails. I called corporate offices and left two messages.. no response... Now, I don't have a laptop for summer session C... thanks Lenovo, thanks. -
My Y500 works great.
-
@all
where can i find the machine type(4 digit) which is needed along with the serial no(which i already have) to register extended warranty.
I dont have the laptop yet and its with my relatives who will bring it for me after 20 - 30 days and the extended warranty registration requires both the details. I will pass on the instructions to them and register the extended warranty online.
Is the machine type common for all y500s?
BTW, mine is y500 - 59371965 -
Damn. I was going to get this laptop, but it seems like there's just too many issues with it...
-
It hasn't deterred me. Given the numbers sold the problems don't strike me as excessive. These are high volume operations in which the quality control suffers. You can pay $500 or more for a comparable laptop and perhaps (Lenovo is consistently rated as one of the best laptop makers) get a little better quality control, but I'm willing to take the risk of exchanging it if I get a lemon.
-
Honestly, the issues have now been more or less ironed out.
*The ELAN touchpads were crazy -> Now replaced with synaptics = issue fixed
*The LCD is FHD but glossy -> all i can say is that this doesn't bother everyone and a FHD screen is a steal at this pricepoint (starts at 810usd, if you know the right door to knock - read B&N lenovo).........you can still get a matte display if you feel like and sell the glossy one; i am ok with it being glossy but would get a matte one if the current one breaks
*Slow HDD -> buy an additional mSATA HDD and install OS on to it, enjoy breathtaking performance and use mechanical HDD for media storage.
** Real PITA is the intel 2230 wifi card and the whitelist BIOS
you will struggle with 5GHz wifi and would feel the need to replace the existing card.
But the laptop takes only a select wifi cards listed in the BIOS.
Two ways:
a) Get a whitelisted card
b) Mod the BIOS so that it accepts all cards :google: "y500 bios mod tech inferno"

Heat management 6.5/10
Sound quality 7/10

Performance 9.5/10

This is a solid VFM machine and the way to go if your budget tops $1000 incl. taxes and shipping and you want a performance laptop. -
Few things I'm running into with my Y500 I hope can get cleared up.
When I cold boot the system (from a 128gb mSATA) my Bluetooth sometimes doesn't work. I have to manually go into the device manager, go to the bluetooth adapter (which has a yellow sign), disable and re-enable for it to work. It doesn't happen everytime but it's annoying when it does. Anyone have the same problem or have any solutions?
Only other complaint I've ran into is when I put the laptop on sleep overnight (plugged in with no battery) I wake up to the laptop turned off. I've also a screen with a sad face and says something like "your pc has ran into a problem". I'm not sure what's causing it to reboot, since it's on sleep it's in a low power state so I know it's not overheating itself. Any reasons why it's happening?
