Finally some sense in these forums. Seriously.
and FSU Logan has does nothing here but rail on one thing or another, either for or against the Y500 and Lenovo, so I'd just ignore him in general.
The Y500 is a great value for the price, mine is working okay so far, and it looks and feels great. Aside from some niggling issues, I've managed to batter mine into a machine I'm happy to use.

Few things I'm running into with my Y500 I hope can get cleared up.
When I cold boot the system (from a 128gb mSATA) my Bluetooth sometimes doesn't work. I have to manually go into the device manager, go to the bluetooth adapter (which has a yellow sign), disable and re-enable for it to work. It doesn't happen everytime but it's annoying when it does. Anyone have the same problem or have any solutions?
Only other complaint I've ran into is when I put the laptop on sleep overnight (plugged in with no battery) I wake up to the laptop turned off. I've also a screen with a sad face and says something like "your pc has ran into a problem". I'm not sure what's causing it to reboot, since it's on sleep it's in a low power state so I know it's not overheating itself. Any reasons why it's happening? -
In Lenovo Y500's case, its bang for the buck cannot be argued. It's the best in that category. Something has got to give to make this surreal deal to happen and it's quality control and few minor aspects. With such a low price in your mind, you should accept few shortcomings. -
Now that I think of it... try leaving the battery installed and see if the BT issue goes away as well.
Cheers, -
Hello Y500 owners,
Pease tell me where I can find the ultrabay Nvidia 650m 2gb(GN36) in Romania or what site shipping to Romania?
The Gn36 comes with power supply ? or I have to buy separately? -

I use my DVD drive when I first set up the machine as I have a lot of old games on discs that I need to install. After that I swap it with the Ultrabay GPU and never use it again. But I would love to have an external Blu-ray drive as the 1080p screen is very nice and would be great for enjoying Blu-ray movies on. -

Okay I've decided to stick with a Lenovo. I figure i can always return it if theres something wrong. Now the question is back to the Y500 or y510p? Not much of a difference other than the SSD situation and a slightly different prossescer. Is it really that big of a difference?

I paid $800 after tax for 1080p, 16GB SSD + 1TB, 3630QM, and 750M SLI and you don't hear me complaining... -
I just got my y500. I wanna format it to start nice and fresh.
I got my CD KEY from using a bit of bios software. Where can I get the regular version of windows 8 from? Or do I need to torrent it. -

Refund should process Monday.. FINALLY

Besides its not necessary with the speed of a SSD boot times are fast enough that hibernation is completely unnecessary.

I have a question about gaming on the battery. I understand the 750m down clocks to idle speed on battery power, can I manually overclock it using Nvidia inspector or msi afterburner? If not is there a high wattage battery I could buy?
-
Just ordered a Y500, and it says the ship date will be 7/24. That's so far away ;_; I'm afraid that it will be delayed or completely sold out by the time first semester rolls around. Does anyone know if they are still actually making the Y500? Or are they just trying to sell what they have left? Also, I've been hearing the battery is around two to two and a half hours. Is this during heavy gaming or light use too?

I received my refurb/S&D Y500 750m today. Everything looked like new on it. It was perfect until I booted it up. There were bad pixels all over the screen. The bad pixels would flicker and change position whenever I did things like mouse over buttons or scroll around. I noticed was that when I took a screen print, the bad pixels were copied and showed up in the image. I had no idea what was going on, so I was mentally preparing to put it back in the box and return it. I ran the Windows updates, but the problem didn't go away. I couldn't find a newer Nvidia release driver, so I installed the new beta one. I restarted several times. Still no improvement.
Then I installed MSI Afterburner and Kombustor so I check the settings and maybe run some tests. The Kombustor tests looked perfect! And immediately after running them, it seemed like there was some improvement in the other menus and applications. After a while, though, the problem came back and seemed just as bad as before.
So then I installed Steam and loaded up Borderlands 2. I played for about an hour at near-ultra settings, and game looked flawless. I went back to the desktop and other windows, and the problem was completely gone! I shut it down for almost an hour, started it back up, and the screen still looked perfect.
So, yeah, so far so good, I guess? Maybe there was some condensation or something in the GPU? I have no idea, really. Anyone else ever seen anything like this? Anyway, I guess as long as those pixels don't show up again, I've got no complaints.
Here's a sample of what it was like at its worst:
-
If the pixels shifted positions when you moved the mouse cursor, then the problem isn't a defect in your LCD panel.
Most likely, this is a problem with your GPU. The symptoms you describe with flickering pixels is common in GPUs that are excessively over clocked, excessively overheating, or about to fail.
It is possible that the problem has gone away, and you'll never run into it again. But it is far more likely that you will run into this problem again down the road, or that your GPU will fail completely. Your best course of action is to report this to Lenovo now and get your laptop serviced now, while it still has warranty coverage. Because repairing this problem after your warranty expires will require a motherboard replacement, which will cost you several $100s.
When you talk to Lenovo, I would leave out the part where your laptop appears to be fine for the moment. That screenshot you have is perfect evidence to help you get warranty service.

Does anybody have problems with the top part of screen bezel?
Mine is starting to show cosmetic damage just on the part where it meets the top edge of the screen. I assume it's getting in the contact with the handrest when the laptop is closed, and because of the friction it's starting to loose the shine on some parts. -
How do I download the updated bios over at tech inferno? It keeps saying I don't have permission. I've asked there but the admins never posted my question.

Anyone tried the 802.11ac/a/b/g/n wifi cards?
I am about to pull the trigger on Intel 7260 wifi card HMC ( PROVANTAGE: Intel 7260.HMWG Dual Band Wireless AC 7260 2X2 AC+BT HMC)
It is the correct model and it can replace the stock 2230- card and it has BT 4.0 too.
The only problem might be the antenna, will it be able to tackle the 5Ghz channels?
Or will i have to buy new antennae too?
PS: Its obvious that I will have to mod the BIOS from TI by svl7 -

Warning guys, long post coming up lol.
So I decided it might be time for the sli upgrade. However... i am having so much trouble finding the additional 650m ultrabay for my y500 (GN36), it seems EVERYWHERE (decent prices $125-140 ranges) I look they are sold out/out of stock,
I even called a couple of the sites (pcsuperstore and exclaiberpc) and they told me that it seem Lenovo discontinued this ultrabay gpu for the y500 as of now, so they have no idea when or if they were gonna ever get it in stock again. ?!
It seem orders are still going in for y400 GN35. Now I thought about calling Lenovo and they probably do have some GN36s laying around but I honestly could not pay the $230 price, plus additional $ for the 170w charger. + $300 is simply out of my budget range for this upgrade.
So I ask you y400/y500 owners this, can I simply use the y400 GN35 in it's place? It seems I can still place order this on some of the sites. I checked the specs and they seem to be almost %100 identical besides perhaps the outside casings size. Although some of the sites listed them as having the same dimensions (further confusing the hell out me! lol).
Even if the sizing was off a bit, since the y400 is a smaller laptop, woudn't it still fit in the y500 slots? I mean if I was subbing a y500 gn36 for a y400 GN35 I'd be concern, but since it is the other way around wouldn't technically by theory it would still fit?
Hell, I even read some posts from a guy who ordered a GN36, but instead got a GN35. He tried it anyways, and apparently the y400 unit fit and worked on his y500 (system recognize the second gpu, sli set and everything!). He did mention some minor issues (game crashes, black screens, etc) but when he retried the games or restart the cpu it worked again. Now I'm not sure if his probs may stem hardware issues and from the gn35 not made for the y500, or simply early drivers issues that comes with alot of these sli setups.
You can see his posts regarding this here, his user name is sanemate, he addresses the issue on post 361

Does anyone have any experience with this, or any kind of useful inputs regarding the situation? This whole process has been pretty annoying and frustrating, I just wanna run a 650m sli set up in peace, I mean this is why I chose the y500. -

Just bought a y500 from the outlet and since it was from outlet I couldn't be too picky about the specs.
Here are some questions:
[Is the +16gb ssd cache something I can buy and place into the laptop? Where can I get this?] - Found the answer for myself
Is there some place that I can find a cheap HD caddy for the laptop? I think teh lenovo site had it for $189... -
Unlike the one on the Lenovo website, this does not come with a HDD or SSD inside of it.

Can someone tell me whats the metter with that coupon? How can I get one? Where is it avilable?
Normally an y500 is 1300$ and with that ecoupon it gets around 850$! It a big deal and I cant let this opportunity slip away!
P.S: Sorry for my bad English -
conscriptvirus Notebook Evangelist
Most of the time, the ecoupons are written along with the deal. Here's an example:

The ecoupon is DOORBUSTERS, and when you add to cart, you will have to enter "DOORBUSTERS" to the space required before you check out. -
Has anyone else had an issue where the screen just goes black and doesn't recover while enabling or disabling sli on this model? This basically forces a restart every time I would like to switch modes. Any help would be appreciated as i'm not sure if this is a driver/windows 8 issue or something else hardware related.
Thanks
Update: Nevermind totally a driver issue. To anyone else having this problem I downloaded the newest driver from NVidia and problem solved. -
Would someone who has already played it please post their optimal far cry 3 settings to get around 40-50 fps? I have a y500 750M SLI with 135+/299+ running on windows 8. Any advice is much appreciated, thanks!

Try using Geforce Experience for optimal settings.
-
I would agree with this.
The dual GeForce 650m / 750m GPUs are powerful, but not powerful enough where you can just max all settings on every game. I just use GeForce Experience, and let it handle the settings for me.
But then again, I have the mentality that I'd like to use my time to play games, instead of tweaking custom graphics settings. You may be a person that specifically spends their time tweaking graphics settings for fun, just to see how your hardware performs under different load.

Ok, so like an idiot today, I accidentally dropped the AC adapter of my laptop onto the keyboard of my laptop while scrambling to plug it in before the battery dies...
The AC brick hit the numpad area of my laptop on its corner and it popped the "Period / Del" key and the vertical "Enter" key off the laptop. It doesn't pop back in as it seems like the clips and membrane are damaged. The actual keypress still works fine when I press on the little nipple thing directly.
Nothing else seems to be damaged, and its good I'm using an SSD on it.
Honestly, I can live without fixing it, but my "OCD" is going to flare up seeing the broken keys.
How much should I expect to pay if I send it back to Lenovo for repairs.. I don't have any accidental damage warranty, just the standard one.
