Thanks! :) I'll go with the Y500 then.
How about HD video editing? Do you think Y500 will handle it well?

actually one of my friend's neighbour is seller, he has 4-5 units for sale which he imported couple of months back. that's why i'm not sure about fabrication date.I'm going to check these details in few days at his place. I'm really worried as this is my first laptop.

I hope it does because that is why I am trying to get one.
It has all the features I am looking for to edit HD footage:

    -Quad Core Processor
    -16GB RAM
-Nvidia Graphics Card for Adobe's Mercury Playback Engine via CUDA Hack
-Multiple Drives (mSata + HDD + ODD Caddy)
-USB 3 Ports for External Media

I hope to add a 256GB mSata, replace the stock HDD with a faster 1TB 7200rpm* and replace the screen with a matte 95% NTSC screen.

Btw do you think it's possible to install other GPU into ultrabay (like say gtx670m or higher) and then use installed 650m for PhysX? Or it's not possible? (i.e gpu is soldered to ultra-bay or notebook won't have enough power to upkeep more powerful GPU)

Hello all, I heard the Y500 has a keyboard issue as well. Is it true that when you type for awhile, the keyboard stops responding and spits out random characters?

Yes, but the issue is much less widespread then the touchpad issue. I have experienced the keyboard issue myself.

Can give us some more detail as to what the keyboard issue is?
Is it frequent (several times a day) or occasional (once a week/month)?

I don't need to do a lot of typing so this laptop is still at the top of my list but it would be good to know all the ins and outs before a purchase is made.

At it's worst, it was immediate. You can't type a paragraph without it throwing in random characters, spaces, and other silliness. So, it wasn't like it fails after so many hours, it was doing it from startup and there is no way around it like with the touchpad where if you put the laptop to sleep the issue would go away for a while before coming back. I would really recommend you look for another laptop and stay away from Lenovo because it is not only the Y500 that is prone to this. This is an electrical interference or grounding issue. I've managed to fix most of the keyboard issue by putting electrical tape in certain areas with the intent to shield/ isolate electrical parts. Right now, the only issue is when I type the number 6 on the numpad, after so many times it will throw in an extra "`". It is much less than before but that is how I know I have not completely fixed the issue.

CPU can be upgraded later, socketed. I pulled it out for the fun of it when I had it apart. Incredible how much power is in that little chip.

For anyone intending to buy today or return a faulty y500 rather than get a refund I strongly recommend checking out the now 80 page y500 touchpad thread on the lenovo forums. They've really screwed things up. I sure hope they can fix it soon because it is a nice laptop.

I have two quick questions that I don't think anyone has mentioned in this thread.

    1. What touchpad command works as alt+tab? When I am gaming, quite often I an alt tabbed out when I do something like scrape across the touch pad. I would prefer to not have to turn it off because I do use it when I have a mouse plugged in.

    2. Has anyone had any success with an odd caddy that fits the ultra bay? Without having to modify it, I am not a very handy person!

    1. -> Hard to explain, but if you start in the lower left corner and make a small half circle you can alt tab between apps and stuff. It's really hard to use at first, but it's a sweet little something once you know how to use it.

I decided to buy the Lenovo Y500.

I must say I'm very satisfied with this laptop. It's quite powerful (ca. 45 fps in Guild Wars 2 running in 1920 x 1080 with everything maxed out surprised me), I also love the design and the screen. It's a great computer.
I haven't had any problems with the touchpad or the keyboard so far - though I must admit that the touchpad isn't very good. It feels unstable and is very slow (even when the cursor speed is set to maximum). I don't know if it's the Synaptics touchpad or the other one - there's no info about the manufacturer in the Control Panel. Is there any way I can check it? And can I somehow increase the cursor speed when using touchpad?

What settings when I was using it on 306 I had grey patches all over the screen and not to mention I could not play far cry 3 on any setting now however I can. I did some tweaks to the 310\313 drivers and it fixed the issue of microshuttring

All options maxed out and vertical sync off. Didnt touch any setting in nvidia control panel.

I reinstalled nvidia notebook 310.90 drivers now and it is smooth again, previously i was trying on laptopvideo2go's 310.90 driver.

Btw, gw2 gone crazy on 313 beta, screen tearing all over, looks good on 310.90 tho.

I believe there's been reports of the Elantech equipped Y500 still in circulation. It might help if you order from Lenovo directly but that is still not a guaranty. Lenovo's support have been laughable so even if the issues with the Y500 has been ironed out, I would still recommend staying away from this company.

I have already stated this on the review thread but later on I came by this more populous thread,so i will ask away again

There was this statement where a fellow user got 45-55 fps readings.
hi ,I have the sli version (sli is turned on) and my drivers are latest 310.90 I dont get those fps readings, which drivers are you on?
I get around 39-40 fps when I record with fraps, and when I dont do any recording and only use the benchmark option it still gives me no more than 40fps.I dont get it.And what drives me mental is that another one with y580 has done the same chapter on black ops 2 and got around 55-59 fps.SLI should be more powerful than that.So I am beginning to think that my laptop is suffering from sth:/

Is that my drivers(maybe the latest is not the best?) or are you guys using another software to calculate the fps?
can you shed some light here?

PS:the chapter that I have tried recording was at the beginning of the 2nd chapter where we first start on the chopper afterwards get hit by an RPG and land on the ship to save Woods.

Will the y500 allow you to switch out the wifi card to a Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300?
I read some thing about the locked bios and stuff so just wondering.

    Thanks
If not might be canceling my order and waiting for some other laptop.

Hey everyone, first post here and unfortunately it's a sad one. I just got my y500 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. Yesterday my gf slipped while holding a glass of water which then spilled onto my y500 which I had just turned on 5 mins previous to this (such bad luck). I immediately turned it off, wiped it thoroughly with a cloth, turned it on it's side (teepee) and blow-dried it using the COOL setting. I left it sitting like a teepee for 24 hours and then decided to try turning it on. Everything worked...for about 10 mins, then a blue screen appeared saying that my PC had encountered an error and needed to shut down. Since then, it turns on but the screen remains blank. Also for just ordering the 2 year base warrantly and not including the accidental damage one. Anyways, there is currently a snowstorm where I am and I haven't been able to leave to take it to a computer repair shop: I just wanted people's thoughts on whether or not they think I will need a new laptop or if it will probably just need, say a video card replaced, etc.

    Thanks in advance

    quick question
I just ordered the cheaper y500 with sli($899 @ newegg) comes with a i5 processor instead of i7 and was wondering if down the road will i be able to upgrade the cpu. I ordered the lesser version cause my laptop budget was kinda tight and the i5 should be plenty for the current games i play however it'd be nice if i could upgrade it in the future. I'm assuming its the same mobo&socket as the i7 but idk cant really find alot of info on the i5 that's in it.

Most likely the repair costs will be so high that it's usually better to just buy a new one. That's the case usually with liquid damages and laptops i'm afraid.

Not sure where you live but in Canada and the USA the y500 i7 is on sale. The one I got is $899 (same price you paid for the i5). You should check out the lenovo site and see if you are better off canceling your order at Newegg.

Hey all! I just ordered the Y500 (95412UU) with the 750gb at 7200rpm for $897!! I can't wait until it gets here (from what i read i know it's going to be a WHILE until it gets here). I've been looking at upgrades and accessories just waiting for it. I figured i would get a Crucial msata ssd so i can have it as the first boot disk, but not too sure how many gb (128 at the least right? since it's win8 64bit).

My question for you Y500 owners is

    1. How long does your battery last? I read it on average 3 hours, but spoke to the customer rep. and he said it averages 4.5 hours.

    2. Do you know if i can use a battery from another Lenovo laptop, or if there's an extended battery pack out there?

    3. Are there any accessories or mods that you recommend i look into before my Y500 comes in?

    4. I read this article on how to make the ssd drive the boot drive. Since the Y500 doesn't come with the Windows install cd and i'm not tech savvy; would this be the best route or would you recommend a better way?

    Thanks everyone! Can't wait!

    Hello,

I have two questions about the touchpad in Y500:

    1) Is it normal that the touchpad feels unstable and a bit... fragile? It doesn't feel very solid... Is touchpad in every Y500 like this?

    2) I was searching for info about the touchpad manufacturer in the Control Panel, but I haven't found anything (even in the 'Mouse' section). Is there any other way I can check it (I'd like to make sure I have the latest drivers)?

    Thanks in advance.
