    1) Mine feels solid.

    2) The touchpad is synaptics, look on their site for the drivers, I believe it is version 16.3

    @ 1)
How big is the part of your touchpad you can press in? In mine it's the button area plus like 3/4 of the touchpad (I mean 3/4 of the touchpad isn't attached to the casing and you can press it a little). It's a bit annoying, cause everytime I touch it, it goes in a bit. The touchpad is quite loosely attached and I'm wondering if that's normal.

@ 2) Yes, but some Y500 touchpads have been made by ElanTech. The thing is I can't find any info about the manufacturer in my system.

    1) Mine is fine, it doesn't push in so I'm guessing yours wasn't assembled properly.

    2) Did you click on devices and go to settings for touchpad? There should also be an icon in the tray, click on it then click on pointing device properties, then go to device settings. Under devices mine says Synaptics Clickpad.

On another note, does anyone have issues using SLI? 2 of the 3 games I tried using SLI with crashed and my laptop restarted so I had to disable it. I'm using the 313.96 drivers. Are there specific drivers from lenovo I'm supposed to use? Also I'm aware some games are SLI supported and others are not.

Yes, I've checked the devices section. It shows two mouse devices: one is a "mouse compatible with HID", the other one is a "mouse compatible with PS/2" (one of them is a wireless mouse I use). [The PS/2 port thing is strange; laptops don't even have that port nowadays]
And about the touchpad icon in the tray - there isn't one. I tried to add that icon, but it's not on the list. Maybe I need to update my drivers...

Hm yea try installing but so far it looks like it isnt a synaptics touchpad for whatever reason.

Also I fixed the SLI issues, it was the 313 beta drivers, stick with 310. I occasionally get a hiccup where my fps dips to 30 when one of my programs crash (I think it's a software issue though.

Just jumping in to say that I'm still amazed by the Y500 Sli's power.
It's awesome. Further more I've had some people complimenting the Y500 for the looks. Apple, pfffft lol.

I have the same problem. I have received my y500 today, and everything is fine apart from the touchpad. It is audiable (a bit too audiable for my taste). Everytime I put my finger on it, I can hear it (i probably hear the sound of contact of the plastic sheet with the background material). And it seems to be fixed only on the top part.

Is this normal, or should I return it?

Edit: when I press the back of the laptop in the area of the touchpad, the touchpad stops producing sound (and feels less flimsy)

There you go. Not a dollar bill though. And to give you an idea of the thickness. My fingers are fairly slim.

This is exactly what I'm experiencing. My Y500 also has another issue - screen flickering. The screen goes all purple sometimes when I'm closing it (usually happens around 45 degrees). I visited the place where I bought my laptop today - and they told me I can't exchange it for another Y500 anymore, cause 14 days have passed since I purchased it (they only accept returns for 10 days since purchase)... I decided to send my laptop to Lenovo. I really hope they'll fix it...

I have made a video showing my problem with the touchpad. Can anyone confirm that the touchpad shouldn't produce this kind of knock noises when normally used?

Can anybody with the y500 tell me how long the battery actually lasts? With the power saver mode that it usually enters once you unplug the charger. I'm specifically looking for how long it takes to run out while web browsing or doing basic tasks; occasional youtube video, etc. But anything will do really.

I've searched everywhere for an accurate battery life comment but nobody has really touched upon it.

    Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem... And I would also like to know if this is normal. Folks at the store told me that there's nothing wrong with the touchpad, but I think they were wrong.

I have a Y400 and my touchpad doesn't make that clicking sound. If I had to guess I'd say your touchpad is loose or in other words, wasn't secured properly.

    Thanks!

Can anyone else confirm it's not a normal touchpad installation (especially Y500 owners). I've been to service and they don't know is it a fault or not (never had that model on testing), but say that my rouchpad is working so they don't want to replace the device. I have to be sure my trackpad is abnormal before I enter an argument with them.

I just bought a Crucial 256gb 2.5" Sata III SSD before my new Y500 ships. I'm sure I can figure out how to physically replace the HDD with the SSD but how should I get windows and the drivers on the SSD. There is no dvd drive so what do I do?

The SLI Y500 on Newegg/Amazon ships in a stupid configuration. SLI is off by default. It assumes you want multi-monitor support (one card for monitor A, one for B). Games, by default don't use the second card.

If you are playing a game and the left vent is blowing hot air and the right vent is not, you're not using SLI.

Right click on your desktop, open the NVIDIA control panel. Go to PhysX/SLI. Turn on SLI if it's off. Then go to manage 3d settings. Disable multi-display. Set to adaptive power (don't worry, the graphics cards automatically scale performance when turned on for use). NVIDIA recommended SLI.

You're almost done. What this computer does by default is only scale the second GPU when "necessary". I'm not sure how it defines "necessary", but it usually means if one card plays the game at all, then don't use two.

Download the NVIDIA Geforce Experience Beta (I've read that some have had trouble doing this). This tool will scan Steam and your Drives for your games that can run SLI and turn it on for them. It will also set the graphics to some pretty aggressive levels. I've had weird performance glitches with extremely high anti-aliasing, some PhysX options, and Vsync. Your results may vary. I do recommend in each game turn off "Ambient Occlusion" (that is off by default in the NVIDIA Control panel, but the Geforce experience beta may turn it on anyways). You may also get better performance if you turn off some lighting affects (PhysX stuff).

After doing this, DOTA 2 went from 30-40fps to 70-90.

OneKey recovery will let you make an installer disk. USB should work fine, but you'll need one that's at least 32GB or so.

Yup, you are going to continue to get those errors. The Windows Key is stored in the Bios. The Bios expects a specific partition scheme on the boot drive or it won't activate the copy of Windows on there.

Install Windows. Call Microsoft and tell them what has happened, they will walk you through fixing your activation.

Mine does the same thing. I got the new SLI one from Newegg. Don't press so hard, do a light double tap, it still works. It's just a flexible touchpad.

Why didn't you get a msata? It's waste to swap an 1TB HDD for a 256gb SSD when you can get an MSATA SSD and keep both.

mSATAs don't have moving parts either, can be booted from, and a 256GB one can be bought from Newegg for $200. I agree with the original poster, it's a waste to remove the 1TB drive, even if all you do with it is store meaningless files on it.

Exactly. 256GB on a laptop is just not enough. Even if you manage to store other files on your HDD at home. I don't want to go through the trouble of transferring files over and over again if I can have them with me, on my laptop, at all times.
A combination of speed, and storage.

310 is the most stable one right now. You can get it from nvidia. Don't get the beta drivers yet, they're a bit buggy.

I have a problem with Red Orchtestra 2.
It keeps crashing every time I play it (after some time of playing). I tried changing the graphics settings, turning SLI on and off and updating my video drivers (to 310.90) and nothing helped. I asked people at Tripwire Interactive forums about it, but they didn't have any solution...

    Are you on win8
Does the game give an error while crashing
It is not likely a driver issue. There is something wrong with either the game or your Windows

I am aware how the touchpad works(buttons integrated in the touch surface), but my question was aimed to the knocking noise that is heard under normal touchpad operation (finger rest, finger drag) whitout pressing the touchpad.

I can today confirm that my touchpad was faulty (probably not secured well in the casing), because I've got my replacement unit which doesn't have the problem.

I ordered a Y500 with the standard 1366x768 screen though I wanted one with a 1080p screen. I ended up ordering just the lowend one because of some hassles with the debit card I was using and the limits on it. Anyways, I was wondering if I could later upgrade the screen to the same screen the better version of this laptop came with?

I also plan on putting in an msata drive like the better one had and bumping up the memory a tad, and ordering the GN36.

The touchpad should be bendable (it bends when you click), but shouldn't produce much noise during normal use (like it's making on video that I've posted). Since I have closer investigated the problem, I've found out that my touchpad was silent for the first 5-10 minutes after I turn Y500 on, and after that you can hear the knocking noise (like in the video) every time you touch it.

After lenghtly argument with the service I've got the replacement unit which doesn't exhibit the problem.

Yes, I am using Win 8.
Usually there's no error message. The game simply freezes, the sound loops or goes "RRRRRRRrrrr" (I hope you know what I mean ;)... It's so damn annoying.
I don't know what can be wrong with my system... I haven't changed any settings that could do any harm to it...

Hey Bearfight wondering if you could help me out. just got my Y500, purchased an SSD to replace the current HDD and was attempting to follow the guidelines you provided on a clean install. downloaded the windows_8_setup.exe from the link you provided and punched in the generic code given then it tells me "can't connect right now check internet connection and try again" my internet connection is fine, i even tried again with the firewall disabled and got the same message. tried on another computer with the same results. Use of my extracted product key gives me the message "use of this product key cannot be used to install a retail version of windows 8."

so now i am stuck without an iso of windows for the clean install. Microsoft said if i wanted to replace my hdd with an sdd and not clone it i'd have to purchase a copy of windows 8 from them?!?!

    any help is appreciated.

Win 8 is full of video game issues. Patches do not fix many of them. ex Borderlands 2 Should not even lag at the system that i am playing but apparently it does.
so the fact that a game is running at the system somewhat surprises me. I know for a fact that this is not a driver issue. just in case install the 310..90 drivers on your laptop.
and do the following mentioned in the website
Red Orchestra 2: Total Computer Lockup Crashes Solved ..FXAA/Nvidia bug. - Steam Users' Forums
    see if it works

it is possible but freakin hard
    easy to screw up

I've taken screens out before, I was just wondering because some things say it might not be upgradable, but others say it might.

Ideapad Y500 (59-346619) model is totally different from us versions
especially the gpu it says nvidia GT650 n13p-GT1 GDDR5
where as in gpu of us models it shows GT650m (ddr version not specified)
whats my doubt is the 1st one powerful than the second one...??
    which one is better
is us models having ddr3 or gddr5?
actually the gpu model is quite different... can someone clear me on it....and does indian version has SLI Ultrabay option?

Just got my Y500 with SLI, I don't think I'm going to miss my Asus G73 very much...This is at least 4 pounds lighter, and 2x faster. Touchpad isn't flaking out, yet. But I'm sure it will, my dad got a Y500 and the touchpad went berserk after 2 weeks.

edit: Question. When my SSD comes in I'm going to just clone windows over to it. Are there any partitions I can get rid of?
    1000MB - Recovery Partition
    260MB - EFI System Partition
    1000MB - OEM Partition
    ~900GB - Windows8_OS (C :)
25GB - Lenovo (D :) already deleted this one after saving drivers to external
    20GB - Recovery Partition

Some of those have to be unnecessary right? I'm losing about 22.2GB to "recovery partitions." I'd rather not do a fresh install, but I'm comfortable shrinking the other partitions if they can be shrunk by using a dos based partitioning tool. Thoughts anyone?

Oh cool.. I might ask for a replacement then... how long did it take for you to get it? Also does your cursor have fidgety movements sometimes when you keep one finger on it? When I keep my finger lightly near the the bottom of the touchpad, the cursor sometimes flickers.

I have no issues playing Borderlands on my SLi Y500. It runs perfectly, maxed out and without any lag. Did you check your energy management settings? There might be something wrong with your settings there. Balanced doesn't quite give the same performance as the high settings.

All versions should be 2gb GDDR5. I don't see why you made such a big point about it. They only left out the GDDR part on the other website. You could've easily checked the Lenovo or related sites.
