Hi keyur82;
First, I'm glad you're happy with your decision. But in my case I have to say that I haven't experience any problems with my trackpad. Its funny 'cause I compare Y580 with a MacBook Pro trackpad (my wife has one) and for me it feels the same.
Anyway, the reason for my post is really that both laptops has the same CPU, so I don't see any reason why you cannot upgrade to 16GB. The specification of the Y580 states you can upgrade up to 8GB as well. But I think that's just a preconfiguration thing.
Where did you buy it from?
Update:
Here's a link from xoticpc:
ASUS N56VZ-DS71 - XOTIC PC - Asus 15.6" Notebook
you can upgrade your ASUS up to 16GB
-
Does any Y580 owner with i7 3610QM and GTX 660M who lives in Los Angeles want to sell there computer? I'll happily purchase it at the original price. I'm gonna be there in just this Tuesday and I'll pay in cash.
-
Here it clearly says, "DDR3 1600 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 8 GB SDRAM"
ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS N56VZ
This one is the product page
Micro Center - ASUS N56VZ-RB71 15.6" Laptop Computer - Black Aluminum N56VZ-RB71
If you are liking the trackpad of Y580 then it's the best laptop to own right now. I wasn't happy with that so I had to return it. If you want to compare with MacBook pro's trackpad then Asus N56VZ's trackpad more closely matches the look and feel of MacBook pro's trackpad. -
1. I haven't seen the Y580's touchpad, but so far every N56VM or N56VZ I have seen personally has had the typical defect whereby if you push slightly hard near the mouse buttons, it bends into the chassis.
That reason alone is enough to deem the touch-pad poor on the N56 series, at least for me.
2. Unless you are going to actually start talking in-depth about the types of displays used on both laptops, their manufacturer, viewing angles, contrast, brightness levels etc, I think your opinion on the screen shouldn't mean much for anyone.
So really, this is just opinionated drivel, if you ask me.
3. I think it is unfair to brand one a laptop for gamers, and the other for non-gamers. May I ask what is your basis for doing this?
I hope you enjoy your N56VZ, have a nice day. -
Like I said... Lenovo's webpage states you can upgrade up to 8GB your Y580. But I think that's because is the maximum they configure it. The same happens with ASUS... but I edited the previous post... anyways... here is again:
ASUS N56VZ-DS71 - XOTIC PC - Asus 15.6" Notebook
so the truth is you can actually upgrade your up to 16GB.
When I bought many years ago my HP DV9000 it said up two 2GB. But that was because of the OS (Vista 32bit) I switched to an 64 bit OS and I was able to put 4GB on it. I'm just saying in a future, if you want 16GB in your ASUS, you can
-
What I meant was Asus doesn't have powerful enough graphics card to play games. On the other hand Lenovo has one. Non gamers probably wouldn't need high end graphics card and that's why I assume they will prefer better build quality over high end graphics. Again it's my personal thinking.

who makes the FHD screen?
someone please run hwinfo64 and see who makes the 1080p panel........ or post the model number -
For my power saving options, I set the display to turn off after 1 min and it comes back when I press a key or move a mouse. However, unlike my older HP 6910p, when the display is turned off and I have my music player going, the application volume of the player (seen in volume mixer) is automatically adjusted to extremely low levels, almost inaudible, and when the display comes back the volume still stays low. Is there anyway to prevent this auto-lowering of the application volume? There are no options to do so under "change advanced power settings."
-
According to hwinfo64, LG Philips makes the screen.
-
Anyone try guild wars 2 on the y580? The beta? Im curious to see how it runs.
-
Okay, I fixed the problem:
Control panel>Sounds>Communications, select "Do nothing." I think Steam changed it to "Reduce volume of other sounds by 80%."
-
Can we upgrade a wireless card in y580 in to like killer wireless or something like that? Thanks.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2 -
Has anybody successfully used findmyorder.com to track their Y580 on delivery? Just doesn't seem to load for me.
-
I have. It runs on high settings around 40-50 fps but may occasionally dip to about 25 fps if it gets really intense. Overall, I saw no reason to switch off the "best appearance" setting as gameplay seemed unhindered by small dips in fps

Tried the search option but didn't turn up any results. Was just wondering if this laptop will fit a 9.5mm SSD where the HDD is. I ordered an Intel 330 SSD and hoping it will fit.

Quick Questions!!! Random Thoughts.
Does using a fan like the cooler master U3 o the USB taking any CPU power or actually make the laptop hotter?
What's better to use if I have both options available. I can use wifi or hardwire for my internet. the laptop stationary though. Wifi use any CPU power? -
High Performance, and Lenovo Dynamic Graphics for gaming??? What option gives the overall maximum performance?

CPU Power is not the point when comparing Ethernet / WiFi.
Ethernet is much faster then WiFi. ( -> CDMA ) I think they consume nearly the same (small) amount of cpu power.
I would prefere Ethernet.
USB Power does not need any CPU Power but it produces some heat
via the potential transformer. I dont think that this heat is significant. -
Both cards (650M/660M) are positioned in the high performance class, and easily suffice for gaming. 660M is only roughly 10% faster, but 650M's have been reported to OC to match 660M performance levels.
Arguing with you is quite pointless, as you seem highly biased and/or ignorant, and you consistently refuse to factor any facts or technical knowledge into your arguments whatsoever. -
I am not arguing with anyone. If you think your have more technical knowledge then you should have known that we are talking about DDR3 graphics card in Asus vs DDR5 graphics card in Lenovo. That makes more than 10 % difference. Again I am not arguing with anyone, I was just giving my opinion based on my research.

Skyrim on ultra yields mostly 30-50 FPS, with dips into the mid 20s depending on the environment (fire/smoke and forests are particularly demanding). I would say it's definitely playable on ultra but I prefer to avoid the choppy dips and play on high. I couldn't discern much of a difference between these two qualities so it's a no brainer for me.
I think the Y580 touchpad is fine (keep in mind my previous Thinkpad only had a Trackpoint, so this is my first touchpad in 4+ years), but it definitely suffers from exactly what you have described here. This is easily my biggest complaint with the Y580, though it's certainly not an issue I would consider returning it over. I simply don't have many other complaints...
PS, GTX 660m is hardly in the "high performance class" as you say. It's a mid-range laptop card. -
Thank you for you time, I don't why I ask this stuff I guess it's my OCD.
High Performance, and Lenovo Dynamic Graphics for gaming??? What option gives the overall maximum performance? -
Yes, this is correct. The GDDR5 version of the 650m is only 10% behind the 660m.
The DDR3 verson (which is what the Asus has) has less than half the emmory bandwidth and suffers greatly for it wth performanc.
If Asus put the GDDR5 version in the n56 I would hvae bought that, but instead I have ordered the lenovo, just playing the waiting game on getting my new toy now. -
Hi,
Could you please help me understand if the Y580 in Costco:
Costco - Lenovo® IdeaPad® Y580 Laptop 3rd Generation Intel® Core
which has a tvtuner would also have empty slot to add mSata ssd?
Thx in advance.
Edit: updated the link -
Ok, it's been 10 days since I received my Y580 and still extremely pleased so far. Here's some additional info that should interest some of you
1) If you have your 660m video card disappearing from device manager after exiting a game, it's probably because you have a temperature monitoring program (CPUID, RealTemp, Core Temp) running. My 660m stops disappearing as soon as I stop using the monitoring programs.
2) For additional sound enhancement for gaming while on normal/intelligent setting on the OneKey Theater, you can go to sound in control panel (or right click on the Realtek HD audio manager in system tray -> audio devices), speakers (Realtek high definition audio) -> properties -> Dolby -> power button -> game. The enhancement does make a difference. -
I think since you have not gotten a response to this question, you should try them both for yourself and report back to us. Experience is the best teacher, after all.
I personally uninstalled Lenovo's power management and control everything through Windows Mobility and the Nvidia control panel. I use one power profile with different settings for battery/plugged in. I think it's silly to have a bunch of profiles to fiddle with. If I'm plugged into the wall, I want maximum performance. If I'm on the battery, I want to conserve power (obviously gaming/graphics are not a priority).
It also took me a few days of ownership to discover this excellent feature. If you didn't notice at first (I didn't), there are three enhancement profiles to choose from: movies, music, and games. I had originally disabled the Dolby enhancement because I thought it sounded a bit "too surround," almost tinny, especially when sitting close to the laptop. Then I changed the profile to music and it sounds nicer to me. I have to say these little speakers sound really great, even at high volume.
Also, the Y580 supports digital output through the 3.5 mm jack. Very cool. -
For those of you who replaced your ODD with another drive (either hard disk or solid state, doesn't really matter), can you point me in the direction of the correct caddy to use for the second storage drive? I'd rather not buy one and find out that it doesn't fit the laptop.

I followed your link, but it doesn't say anything about a TV Tuner.

The features mentions:

Integrated Bluetooth® & high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi
Backlit AccuType Keyboard

The y580 cones with a tv tuner ?

Is there a way to download the Windows version of Y580 in case you removed the recovery partition? Not really a problem since i have another installer. Just want to know if it's possible
-
How big is the differance between the i5 and the i7 gaming/general performance wise?
-
I bought my Y580 about 3 weeks ago and at first it ran games like battlefield 3, diablo 3, and grand theft auto 4 at high settings smoothly. But now starting a few days ago I cant even run those games on low settings without lagging badly. I have no idea what may have caused this problem?
-
That's very strange.... Are you using the Lenovo mSATA software that combines the drives?
-
I bought the y580 off Newegg and so far it has been far more value for the money than I expected. I have the glossy FHD screen and don't really have a problem with reflections. So far it is extremely fast and the Blu-ray RAMBO drive turned out to be a burner as well. Not bad for $1049. Battery life surfing seems to be around 4 - 5 hours.
-
Are you saying, your Y580 burns Blu ray discs?
-
No, it doesn't.
-
Hey everyone, my Y580 is supposed to come in tomorrow (extremely excited) and I have a few questions.
1. I have seen some people throw around the word "partition" but I have no idea what it refers to. Care to explain, and why I should do it?
2. Should I make recovery discs?
3. What bloatware should I immediately get rid of?
4. Should I charge the battery overnight before turning on the laptop, or is overnight too long (could it damage it)?
5. What are the best drivers you've found from experience?
Thank you very much! -
run Avira (it's free) to kill any virus, then run malwarebyets to remove any malware.

1. A partition basically splits a hard drive's space in half or whatever you want. The main reason for this is if you want to run a different operating system, you can choose which partition to boot up into. It is also used for recoveries in some cases. There is no reason to partition your HDD unless you want to run another OS.
2. Yes, always make recovery disks.
3. Whatever you feel necessary. I would get rid of the anti-virus and pick up a different free one. I did a clean install, so I'm not too familiar with what came on the computer.
4. Honestly the new battery technology is pretty good. I don't really worry about my battery and just use it how I want to. I suppose it isn't the best to keep it plugged in all the time. Occasionally using the battery power is good.
5. I'm using the stock drivers. They're working fine for me. If you want, you can experiment with newer beta drivers. I would wait and see if the stock ones suit your needs so you don't run into stability issues.
Have fun and enjoy your computer! -
Thank you for answering all of my questions. Couple more if you don't mind:
1. Why did you do a clean install (should I)?
2. I know nothing about recovery disks. Why should I make them? -
Posting this without reading this thread so advance apologies if it is repeating.
I was considering the Sony Vaio S 15 but the Lenovo Y580 has caught my eye. I see that i can get 1080p screen also in Y580. I will be buying the laptop from amazon.com only as i have like 1000 $ in amazon GC balance. But i am not sure if the 1080p one is available on amazon.com. This is because the description under technical details and under product description is mismatching. Can anyone tell me how to make sure whether the model listed is a 1080p or 768p. I am more interested in the 1080p version. -
Actually, if you look at the Owners Manual for the Y580, it indicates a TV Tuner port on the right side of the notebook. Apparently there are models that include a TV Tuner (None on Lenovo's site however). This model from Costco apparently includes the TV Tuner. Has anyone actually purchased this model from Costco and can you confirm it comes with a TV Tuner.
-
Your best bet would be to talk to Amazon directly before you buy. With all of the mix ups going on the only place I'd truly trust would be from Lenovo themselves.
-
Yes that's what i did. I contacted their Chat helpline and told them that all the Y580 listings have mismatching information. The customer rep guy told me that he will escalate the issue. Lets hope they do it.
I am really considering the Y580 but this mismatch of information across many websites is really a downer.
Btw what is the reason of mixups with the config across many websites ? -
looks like fhd comes with blueray and hd screen doesn't.

High Performance, and Lenovo Dynamic Graphics???
What option gives the overall maximum performance?
