Does anyone know how the x3 is compared to the u3? I am a bit limited on desk space and the x3 is a bit smaller.

    Hello Dear owners of Y580,

i am thinkg about buying that monster, but honestly i am poor student and i cant afford full build so i find out THIS and i have few questions.

First is about HD display. Is it really bad? because i have never seen any FHD screen and HD (y570,g570) are quite good for me.

Second is about mSATA, do you think that in this configuration (what i have posted) is any?

Last one is about FHD screen update, i have read that lower configrations dont have cable, which is required for FHD displays. is it truth?

i would like to upgrade to FHD and SDD in future

BTW, acording to me that Laptop is just great :) and i am really looking forward to it :)

    Thanks for all your responds

Hi, I was wondering if anybody else here is also experiencing the following problem:

I am able to play many games such as Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Rage, etc. on highest settings at 45-60 fps. Everything is very smooth. Even Crysis 2 Ultra is very smooth.
However, when I play Mass Effect 3, I'm down to about 20-25fps. At first, I thought that this was the Intel HD 4000 kicking in. However, the NVIDIA control panel indicates that masseffect3.exe is using the GTX 660m. Is anybody able to explain this?

Also, when I play on battery, the fps constantly fluctuates from 15 to 60fps for other games that I CAN usually run well. This is not a huge problem since I don't game on battery often, but I would like to know what is causing this. Is it NVIDIA Optimus again?

    Thanks!

Sure thing, but it will be a long while before I'm able to do it. :( Hopefully we will have results before then.

Hey all, I saw some talk about cooling pads and seeing as I have a U3 I figured I would do some stuff to help evaluate it for you all. :D

    ///Criteria\\\
    Internal- CPU, GPU, HDD temps.
External- WASD area, touchpad area, approximate top of HDD, approximate bottom of HDD temps.

    ///Equipment\\\

    Internal- SIW, FRAPS
    External- Raytek minitemp MT6

    ///Results\\\
    Ambient Temp-23.8*C
    ___Idle on cooling pad___
    CPU(max)-73.5*C
    GPU(max)-37*C
    HDD(max)-43*C
    WASD-28.4*C
    T.P.-29.2*C
    HDD Top-33*C
    HDD Bottom-28.6*C
    ___Gaming on cooling pad___
    CPU(max)-86.25*C
    GPU(max)-65*C
    HDD(max)-47*C
    WASD-33.4*C
    T.P.-30.6*C
    HDD Top-36*C
    HDD Bottom-30.2*C
    ___Gaming on tabletop___
    CPU(max)-88.75*C
    GPU(max)-71*C
    HDD(max)-50*C
    WASD-36.0*C
    T.P.-31.2*C
    HDD Top-41.2*C
    HDD Bottom-35*C

    ///Extra stuff\\\
Gaming-Accomplished on BFBC2 with all settings turned to 'high,' run at FHD 1080p, 2x AA, 2x Anist, V sync off, HBAO off. Played for ~10 mins then left idling in game for ~5 mins. Temps were recorded after the 5 min wait. (Avg fps for both gaming runs was ~40)
GPU/CPU-No OC on either. GPU is running the Beta Drivers. I have the vsync option in NVIDIA Manager forced ON. (I had frame rate problems in Dead Space 2 where it would stick at 30, disabling vsync in game and forcing it in the manager allowed me to play DS2 at 70-ish fps on high with no tearing)
Beta driver windows exp-Kinda unrelated to this, but someone asked about it earlier so here it is. Windows experience values before beta driver: 7.4 (CPU),7.7 (RAM),7.1 (GPU), 7.1 (GPU Gaming), 5.9 (HDD). After beta driver: 7.4 (CPU),7.7 (RAM), 6.8 (GPU), 6.8 (GPU Gaming), 5.9 (HDD).
Cooling fan placement-One fan is under vent under the '2' key location, one is under the vent under the left palm rest, and the last is under the approximate HDD location.
    Computer-Part number 20994HU, purchased from Lenovo's website.

Sometimes watching a video or listening to music on the Y580, for about 1 second the audio crackles and muffles somewhat randomly. Does anybody else have/anybody had this issue? If so, how do you/did you fix it?

Awesome post! Just what I wanted to know.

Edit: Hmm, after looking at the numbers closely, your CPU max temp seems a bit high at idle. My CPU is hardly above 50 with 10 tabs on Chrome, windows media player playing, and Lyx open. Most of the time my CPU just hovers around 40's. Ambient temperature now is 25C and no laptop cooler, just a slight elevation to my laptop.

Just got my Y580 yesterday. I like it minus the trackpad since it feels a little stiff. It runs cool and quiet compared to the new XPS 15 that I returned due to throttling and WiFi issues.

Unfortunately, I need to exchange this one since Lenovo forgot to install a wireless card in it (How this got past QA is beyond me), so I'm only able to connect via ethernet cable. Also, there were a few dead pixels on the LCD.

Overall, I think the Y580 provides excellent value for the money.

Yup, I just booted up right now and the current value is about 40*C off the cooler with a min of 37*C on the cooler AC unplugged. Thank you for the catch, that is embarrassing. What I did was record the max it ever reached during the last idle run. I'll re-do that run and put down the current reading rather than the max.

    Ambient Temp-25.6*C
___Idle on cooling pad (take 2)___
    CPU(current)-44*C
    GPU(current)-33*C
    HDD(current)-39*C
    WASD-31.4*C
    T.P.-32.2*C
    HDD Top-37.8*C
    HDD Bottom-29.8*C

There is the updated run. I noticed that the current of the CPU increases slightly (from 37 to 44) when plugged in, also noticed that the computer was supplying the CPU with ~1W more of power while plugged in to AC. The run was done plugged into the cooling pad and AC power and the machine was left alone for 20 mins on the desktop.

Well the problem is, I have it set to force the NVIDIA processor, and in the taskbar it shows that the NVIDIA processor is being used. However, I still see much lower performance on battery, even after going through the Windows Power Options and enabling max performance. (Playing Mass Effect 3 still results in 20-25fps, even when plugged in, for some reason... all other games are at least smooth when plugged in, and only suck on battery).

Just posting from my new Y580, if I have the time I'll type up a detailed review on it. Basically what I expected, I'll benchmark it throughout the week and such.

Just a question: has anyone been able to get this to dual-boot with the Windows 8 Release Preview? I want to try it out.

Gotta turn off UEFI boot in the bios, and you have to delete an existing partition (only four primary partitions allowed, and Lenovo made all four for ya).

Issue if anyone can help out: my GTX 660m is recognized but I cannot play any games with it. I have them set to be run with the 660m, but they keep launching with the 4000hd no matter what settings I try. So far I have uninstalled and deleted the drivers, reinstalled Lenovo's versions, intels newest, and nvidias two betas. Still no dice!

    Maybe they just didn't notice.

Probpably they don't look on the HD temperatures in stress tests at all because they are expected to be in an unproblematic range anyway.

    Hello everyone,

i was planning to buy the Y580 but couldnt find answer to one question concerning the HDMI output.
I have learned from NVIDIA that the 660 has 3D Vision, 3D Play and 3D BR playback capabilities.

However on some webpage I have read that the OPTIMUS /IGP setup in certain laptops sends all signals to the IGP 4000 and thus these specific 3D outputs that
the 660 has are only working if the HDMI is connected to the dGPU direct and the features wont work when the hardware layout of the notebook manufacturer does direct all outputs through the IGP.

could somebody confirm that you can connect a 3D TV (plasma for example) via HDMI and play 3D on the plasma. Same for 3D Movies.
It would be great to get confirmation about that since I plan to use the Y580 for hooking it up to the TV a few times per week.

thanks in advance for any hint

    best regds

Hey guys, I am looking for some advice. I am looking for a laptop that has good gaming potential, but also is small and portable enough to take to college classes for notes.

Do you think the Y580 is portable enough compared to a NP9150 or NP9130?

I bought my Y580 for college as well, I think it's definitely portable. You're gonna want a padded backpack just to keep it safe, but it's I think 6 pounds, hardly noticeable in a backpack with a textbook or two. And the power brick is small, so you save about 3 pounds (and a lot of money) compared to the NP9150.

It detects what kinda stuff you're doing and alters the screen/audio profile to match. So if you watch a movie it will automatically put on the movie screen profile and activate the surround sound.

I found it a bit slow to kick in though, so don't really bother with it

If I'm just importing CDs and my hard drive is hitting a temperature of 56C, should I be concerned? This is really making me mad.... ambient temperature is 27C. The laptop just feels warm, but the fans aren't even running.

EDIT: Just kidding, 58C. Still can't even hear the fans.

For those looking for an mSATA ssd, I found these to be very aptly priced. Not sure about their performance in respect to other ssd's (which, please correct me if I am wrong, should be a negligible difference for all practical matters outside of benchmarking), but they should be a significant upgrade from a 5400rpm hdd at the very least.

    They are SATA III.

I'm running the 256gb one in my Y580 as my OS/Apps drive. Note that if you do a google search for "crucial.com 5%" you can find click through links to crucial.com (retailmenot, etc) that save you 5% off which helps partially cover tax if you live in a taxable state. Also crucial has free regular shipping but a friend ordered one last week for his laptop and they said they are backordered until the middle to end of this week (8/1ish).

    Nice find!

I found some other options, to avoid the wait:

Amazon.com: LEXAR MEDIA INC Crucial m4 128GB mSATA Solid State Drive CT128M4SSD3: Computers & Accessories

They have a few left in stock, but the 256's and the 32's are sold out. The price is a bit cheaper than buying from crucial+5%coupon.

ShopBLT.com: Crucial Technology 128gb M4 Ssd Sata Internal

Never heard of them, but they seem reputable after investigating a bit. Cheapest price and several left in stock.

Would it be possible to use SSD and mSata SSD together? SSD as the primary disk and mSata for storage..
I don't see why not but I haven't been able to test it. If so, how can the mSata be configured as an additional sotrage( not cache )

I don't think the HD 4000 would give you a score of 6.8. That's probably the 660m and the only reason yours is a little lower is because the 304.79 beta drivers aren't great. They are worse than the 295.93 that ships with the 580. Just about every benchmark I've tested has yielded worse results with those beta drivers.

If it is, then it's strange that there would be that much of a difference in our scores since I'm running the updated drivers as well. Also, the HD 4000 should not be scoring that high since it's actual gaming performance is mediocre.

I have the 304.79 beta driver and i received a 6.8 Windows Experience Index score as well. Is it possible to revert to a 295.93 driver? I wasn't able to find any downloads, as the NVIDIA website only has the 304.48 and 304.79 drivers.

Exactly. It jumps around and is not a good benchmark in any meaningful way. Especially not for graphics performance.

5.9 was the highest in Vista - 7.9 in Windows 7. I suppose Windows 8 will up that again.

Even at the moment, having a 7.9 score is kind of meaningless, because there still is better hardware out there anyway which also receive a 7.9 score.

Is there any reason in this day an age to disable "themes" service? I am trying to mac out the performance.

Anyone replace the primary HHD with a SSD? I don't mind having only this 128GB it's all I need. Just need it reliable.

Any benefit for removing the optical driver? More space for the heat to leave? How would you cover the hole where it used to be?

    Thanks guys.
