Thanks! I also PM'd a poster on another thread and just heard back from him, who said his friend had successfully installed 16GB. He even sent me the link to the memory he used: Amazon.com: Corsair 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 SODIMM Memory Kit (CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9): Computers & Accessories

Should we be concerned however that on the 3dmark webpage it says the RAM is running at 800Mhz? Isn't that half of what the Y580 orginal 8GB of memory comes with at 1600Mhz?

Is there any reason in this day an age to disable "themes" service? I am trying to mac out the performance.

Anyone replace the primary HHD with a SSD? I don't mind having only this 128GB it's all I need. Just need it reliable.

Any benefit for removing the optical driver? More space for the heat to leave? How would you cover the hole where it used to be?

    Thanks guys.

This topic is way beyond my little knowledge on computers... but I opened CPU-Z and found that my laptop is also running @ 800Mhz/per module... Then I thought.... hmmm... let's see what wikipedia can tell me about this... so here is the answer...

DDR3 SDRAM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Sometimes, a vendor may misleadingly advertise the I/O clock rate by labeling the MT/s as MHz. The MT/s is normally twice that of MHz by double sampling, one on the rising clock edge, and the other, on the falling"

The table in the link will show you...

Hope this answers your question :)

I wouldn't replace the PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) that comes in the Y580 with the PC3-10666 (DDR3-1333) you listed above. You may also want to find a 2x8GB kit that matches the voltage (1.35v) of the stock ram, though the 1.5v modules "should" work fine.

    Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting here. A lot of these posts have been really helpful, and I hope that someone can help me out with my problem now.

I just received my Y580 in the mail today and decided to do a clean install of Windows 7. I made some recovery DVDs first using OneKey, though. So I made a Windows 7 DVD and followed most of the steps listed on this website: How To Clean Install Windows 7 (Part 1 of 3). However, I think I screwed things up somehow. I deleted the first two partitions because I thought those were the ones being referenced to in the article, but it doesn't seem like I'm able to install on the empty space. I see Disk 0: Unallocated Space, but it says that Windows 7 can't install there because the selected disk uses a MBR partition table.

Please, if anyone knows a lot about partitions/clean installs, any help would be appreciated. I really hope I didn't break my Y580 within the first couple of hours of owning it. I really should have researched this more in advance I guess....

    Thanks.

EDIT: Okay, my recovery disks are now working (they weren't working earlier for some reason. I deleted partition 3 and now the recovery process seems to be working). So hopefully this means I can at least go back to how it was.

Still, if someone knowledgeable would please tell me what I was doing wrong in the clean install process, it would be greatly appreciated. Some information on the function and importance of each of the 4 partitions would also be really helpful.

Hey guy, this is my first post, I've been stalking on here for quite some time now haha

I'm thinking about going into Best Buy this tax free weekend and ordering this, along with a 256gb Crucial M4. I'm a student, so I will also get a free Xbox, and the whole package will be around 1300 dollars with 18 months no interest.

I've tried reading through most of this thread....but that's a lot of pages and I'm about to go to work so I wasn't able to finish. Is there a link anywhere telling me what I need to do to install the SSD (if my dad agrees to buying it)? I can figure out taking the HDD out and putting it in, that's a no brainer, but what about drivers and stuff? I can download a copy of Windows 7 through my school - if I download the ISO and burn it onto a DVD can I just do a clean install that way? I've clean installed my HP about a dozen times this way with no issues. Will everything work, are there any special things I will need to download?

also, the Best Buy picture shows the updated Y580 model with three USB ports ( Lenovo - 15.6" IdeaPad Laptop - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - Dawn Gray - 209942U)
but the specs say it only has 2 USB 3.0 ports instead of 3....has anyone else bought it from Best Buy? How many USB 3.0 ports does it have? This is minor...but I don't know if the earlier production units had more problems than the newer ones.

I've looked into this laptop and the dv6-7000 quite a bit. I understand this one is slightly heavier and thicker and the screen is glossy (my current laptop is glossy and it doesn't bother me much). But I'm sensing mixed feelings on the build quality from different people's posts. I am kind of confused on which one handles heat better though... I need something that is pretty future proof and will last me these next four years if not more. Will the Y580 be a better fit for me? Even though the dv6 will be cheaper in the long run with coupons and discounts (even if I get it ordered with the 160gb SSD), the best buy deal makes more sense because of the less expensive monthly payments which will make my parents more happy.

    Thank for all the help!

hi, thanks for your offer. that would be great.

basically I just want to know if output for a full hd 3D game to a full hd 3D plasma ( I have Samsung) is going to work. I have seen on the NVISIA website that the lenovo does not support 3D play but on the other side the 660MX does support it. I have also learned that it might depend on the individual hardware layout the laptop mfr uses to connect the Hdmi to the GPU. I have not really a lot of information, but it would be crazy if that sweet laptop could not full hd output to a 3D monitor/plasma for 3D gaming or 4K movies.

if you find the time to hook it up and try to send the signals via HDMI
Please try if possible a 3D game, any full hd should be fine I guess and 3D full HD movie (I guess it would mean 3840x2160 output (is that already 4K?)

    thanks in advance

    regards

The same model on Newegg seems to indicate 2 of each USB 2.0 and 3.0, in both specs list and pictures.

I installed a Crucial M4 mSATA (note if you buy an mSATA for a Y580 that didnt come with a mSATA you need to scavenge a M2x3mm screw from an old laptop or buy one, I stole one from my old Vaio) along with a Samsung 830 SSD drive in mine but the procedure would be the same, unless you bought a mSATA drive and leave the mechanical HDD in the laptop and then you can install the drivers directly from the HDD. All of the drivers are stored on the "D:" partition of the installed HDD. What I did was put in a usb thumb drive I had laying around and copied the "drivers" folder out of the Lenovo folder from that partition onto the USB stick.

Download a copy of the Windows 7 Home Premium iso from MS digitalriver - http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso . And burn it to a DVD. Then you can pop out the HDD and pop in the SSD drive. And do a fresh install of Win 7 using the burned DVD and the serial on the Win 7 sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Standard Win7 install, Win 7's partition tool is smart enough to recognize the SSD and partition it correctly. There are plenty of other optimizing Windows 7 for SSD guides all over the place, just find an easy to follow one and disable the things it recommends like SuperPrefetch and Disk Defragmenter, etc.

Regarding HDD temps, if I install an mSATA SSD and use that as my main drive (OS + programs), and leave the stock HDD in for solely storage, will the HDD run cooler? It makes sense that it would, considering that programs and game files will be on the SSD, preventing the HDD from having to run hard when the CPU and GPU run hard.

While HDD will be cooler, you have the heat generated by mSata drive. I have read they are expected to generate reasonable amount of heat. That is why I decided to replace my HDD with SSD and opt-out mSata for now.

But you can wait for others to respond, not everything on the net can be reliable :)

I have a Samsung as well, I believe it's a D550 but ever since I got it calibrated and all set I haven't had to know the model number so I forgot.....

I know little about 3D gaming, so I will have to look up how to set it up. I may have a 3D Blu-ray laying around to see if it outputs 3D. My guess is that this laptop is using HDMI 1.4, so it should no problem.

Looking at the reviews from people on the actual lenovo site....a lot of people are saying the build quality isn't good and that the internet takes forever to connect. Is this true?

So when you get this laptop is windows 7 installed on the msata drive? Or is the small 30gb msata drive just used to store drivers? If i wanted to upgrade to a SSD would i just upgrade the mSATA bay to something larger and install windows on it or would you just replace the HDD with a normal SSD? Sorry I do not know much about these mSATA hard drives.

I believe when you get the version with mSata Windows is installed on HDD and system uses mSata as cache. However, you are able to have a fresh install of Win7 on mSata and use it as OS drive. You can also purchase bigger and faster mSata. Remember mSata SSD is different with standard SSD, However with the latest models coming out as SATA3, the speed matches up pretty closely

I was going to use both HDD and mSata, though realised it will be additional heat inside, So I decided to replace HHD with SSD and maybe in future I get a mSata for additional storage.

Ok so you could go either route basically. You could keep the standard 1TB HDD for basic storage needs such as music, videos and pictures and simply upgrade the mSATA to a larger faster one and install windows entirely on the new mSATA. You could also just leave the small 30g mSATA drive as is and replace the 1TB HDD for a standard SSD and continue with the default setup of using the 30gb mSATA for cache and the upgraded standard SSD for everything else. Which would be more efficient?

I'm not sure where you are seeing build quality issues over there? Going back a month and quickly scanning the threads I saw two about the track pad, one about the hard drive, and one about a bad screen. The rest pretty much revolved around the 660 and its drivers. It may indeed have a bad build quality but I don't think the Lenovo site shows that and if it did I wouldn't make a judgement off of that...the vast majority of people who go there do so only because they have a problem.

    Hi alexv13;

I have to say that mine is taking a lot to connect to internet with both cable or wireless. Sometimes I have to open the network and sharing center and try to disconnect/reconnect. BUUUUUUT I'm also using a software that shuts down some start up stuff and delays others... maybe and only maybe on the processes related to the network connection is set to be delayed. Although I've used this software on other computers and I've never had any problems with the internet on those.

And for building quality... today one the keys of my keyboard popped out. It was the right key of the arrow keys. I almost scream... but I was able to put it back easily. ;)

But to be honest I'm extremely happy with this laptop. IMHO is one of the best laptops you can get in its price range.

Thanks for the info! Is anyone else having problems connecting to the internet? If I'm going to an order an SSD, the boot speed kind of defeats the purpose if I'm going to have to wait to connect to the internet...

also, does anyone else know of a place where I can get a good deal on this with no interest financing? Best Buy just sold out :/

    Hi everyone;

My laptop is experiencing temps above 60C when using matlab... is this within a normal range? I know nothing about accepted temp range. Here's a pic of HWMonitor. The laptop is plugged in.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm connected to the internet with my y580 via ethernet cable (since Lenovo forgot to install a wireless card in it) and I'm experiencing the slow connection times on boot up.it takes a few minutes to connect and now I'm debating on returning it since I like to be up and running as soon as the machine boots up. it has no problems with connecting though when waking from sleep. Hope Lenovo can provide a driver/software fix for this one...

Using SSD and msata as cache won't have any improvement effect. If you get a high quality Sata3 SSD as your main drive, you possibly could configure and use the msata as storage.

nice, so do I , D550 59". really great TV. I am in germany, you are european too?

hdmi output is not the issue as far as i understood. its more the combination of the optimus discrete technology doing 3D outputs.

sorry for the inconvenience. I still think there must be others here in the forum who are playing 3D or watching 3D BR on external monitors.
would be great to get that question sorted out.

    thanks

I'm in the US, but yeah same model. Love this TV, it was an absolute steal, has none of the physical problems that the other Samsungs had and once they updated the firmware to get rid of the brightness "popping" it has insane value, I got it plus two pairs of 3D glasses for under $900.

In order to run 3D video, it looks like I need to download Nvidia 3DTV Play software, which has a cost (the store is down so I don't know how much). But, there's a 14-day trial so I'll get that configured, either sometime today or tomorrow.

Hi everyone! I ordered the Y580 a few days ago, and I decided to go with the 1TB model and 32Gb mSSD. I was wondering, is it possible to install windows 7 on the 32gb ssd to speed up the boot time? Or is it more efficient to install the OS on the HDD and keep using the mSSD as cache? Thanks for the help!

Howdy all: just found this forum, and like the post right before me, im just about to order the model with the 32g msata and 1tb hd. Im sure this has been talked about but i haven't had time to go thru the entire 100 pages. I am also wanting to pull out the 32msate cache drive, replace with a 128g msata, make it the boot/os drive, replace the 1tb with a 480 gig ssd. i know the recovery partition resides on the 1tb drive. has anyone done a write up on the best route to do this?? im assuming i would boot up and setup win7, then do the recovery disk backup with everything in factory state, then swap the msata and reload from the recovery partition onto the new msata then swap out the hd for the ssd and ghost the recovery partition onto it. or am i making this out to be worse than it is....if there is a write up, i apologise for not finding this sooner. but if you could point me the right direction i would appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Troy

Hi guys, has anyone encountered a problem where the speakers "pop" whilst on battery power? It seems to be happening on mine, I assume it's a power management issue whereby the speakers are being switched off whilst not in use, I've heard reports of it before in Ubuntu and someone mentioned it over on the new Dell XPS forum.
Can anyone lead me to where to disable this function?
Pretty annoying whilst trying to navigate Explorer and the internet etc, as it occurs when pressing the forward and back buttons mainly..

If you're planning on replacing both the mSATA and HDD, then why not buy a less expensive version of the Y580 without the mSATA, since you'll be just replacing them anyways? As far as I'm aware, all versions of the Y580 have an mSATA port, regardless of whether or not you purchase a version with the SSD.

It happens on AC power too (at least on power saving mode option, I leave it there when plugged in too when not gaming). Like you mentioned, it's whenever you do a task, like load a page. Not every time, but enough. I thought it was a bad rip on some CDs so I ripped mine again, but that wasn't it.

If you are on a budget, go for the m4. It has the best price and you won't notice a performance difference.

If money is not an issue, go for the samsung.

No connection problems for me either. The only issue I have is that it's easy to get marks from palm sweat. Need to wipe the lid and palmrest regularly, but the wipe marks can also be seen. They should copy the metal finish of HP.

Really? That's annoying! Any way to fix it?

Also, does anyone know of a way to edit the OneKey Theatre settings? Whilst I enjoy the surround sound effects, the screen profiles are just awful. I was watching Game of Thrones last night as a test and half of it is just black. It's all too dark and the contrast seems way off. This was never the case on my old laptop..

Really? I find the stock screen great (1080p variant), IMO it is one of the much better displays on laptops these days. Way better than the N55 series displays, and even better than the N56 series displays. Notebook review praised it for its excellent contrast, and color reproduction, which I quite agree with.

funny thing is right now on the website the 32g msata and 1 tb hdd is 100.00 cheaper than just the 1 tb package, but after looking the packe with the smaller single "cant remember" the size was 100.00 cheaper still, so i might do that go for a single ssd no msata,

I'm not sure, I reckon the screen is fine, it's just the profiles could be better in my opinion, my Vaio is much brighter and more detailed in dark sections.
It may also be that I'm still adjusting to the gloss screen..?

Mine is the 1080p btw, UK variant.

Great to here that you have the UK version (although it probably is just the same as the US version mostly), as I have been hearing some bad tales from across the Atlantic. After all, we did pay more ;)

My previous main notebook also had a glossy screen, and this is better in every way. Me personally, I am not a fan of matte screens, I have a business Dell Latitude notebook, and I find its matte screen quite bad.
