I think he means from a driver standpoint.
As drivers mature, performance usually increases. Especially when we get final 3xx drivers from nvidia. Those should definitely give a boost to the 660m.
Hopefully Lenovo also stays on top of the driver situation. -

I can try to put together an installation guide for those that have asked, but what is it exactly you're wanting to know? Just links to the correct drivers, how to partition, or what exactly? Sorry...I'm newer to the forums here but have been messing with computers all my life so something like a clean install seems like second nature to me - if I do a guide I just want to make sure it's what you are looking for -

I also ran it before without the turbo settings from lenovo's energy management widget and I was getting 8800ish for my gpu. So thats probably where the 9300 came from before. -

I was thinking of trying the 304.48 beta drivers when I do my clean install, but I haven't read great things about them. Might just stick with the ones shipping for now. As long as Diablo 3 runs well and outputs to my plasma, I'll be happy for the time being.
I had one concern though. What kind of packaging does it come in? Is it just that thin Lenovo box that people have shown in youtube videos? Or is that box inside a larger box? I'm sure there is enough protection but seems like there should a bit more.
Knowing that my 580 is going to be sitting for two days at the UPS facility twenty minutes from my house is killing me. It's going to be a long weekend. -
That box is inside a larger one. But even still the laptop sits in between two foam pads in the middle of the lenovo box and has plenty of room around it. -

well i just got word that the company who does Lenovo repairs in Trinidad might soon cut ties with Lenovo is that's the case then i might not buy the Y580 because ill have to ship it back to the US to fix cant wait that long if sum thing goes wrong. but im awaiting the reviews of the Y580 and DELL XPS 15 before i buy in August September there .... would be nice if some of you can PM me info about how you Y580 is going and your experiences gonna call Lenovo next week and see whats gonna happen to the Caribbean branch of Lenovo in regards to repairs and warranty

Here's a comparison I did between the Y580 and DV6TQE:

I am seriously stuck between the two. The Y580 has a bit more keyboard flex in some spots than the DV6. The palm rest on the DV6 feels firmer although the LCD panel is like rubber when moved with both hands. The Y580 has flex on the panel but as much.
And it looks like the Y580 has a lower voltage ram (1.28) while the DV6 runs a standard 1.5V -

Hey. So I got the 1TB + 32 GB SSD version of y580 yesterday and I don't quite understand how the thing is configured. I think the SSD is used as cache but there are no RAID controllers, it's not Intel Rapid Storage (although it is enabled), and there is no mention of anything in the BIOS. Most partition mangers/other software recognize everything as one giant physical disk (which is a 1 TB SSD, lol, I wish), and in BIOS the boot drive is the SSD. Here is a little summary of what I mean http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/6264/questionk.png. So do you guys know how the mSSD is used? What's going on? Windows boot time is pretty neat, it's like 15-16 s, which I attribute to the mSSD.. sequential read/write is order 100MB/s which is more in line with the HDD.

I wish the Y580 palm rest was sturdy as the HP. My Lenovo palm rest creaks on the right side. Other than that, I like the laptop over all but HATE the bottom casing look. It looks SO OLD.
I don't get any sort of creaking when I open the DV6. Nor did I have the speaker peeling problem. My first unit and second unit both had a sagging blu-ray drive and somewhat wavy keyboard. The second unit has a less wavy keyboard.
I'm in a love hate relationship with both..my Y580 has an SSD btw. The HP does not. -
Hi all. I am a new owner of a y580. So far so good. 1080p screen is beautiful. Great viewing angles. Just a bit of backlight bleed trough in places around the bezel but only at extreme angles.
I've only tried a few games, but they run fine. I haven't installed Fraps so I don't have FPS numbers. The side exhaust does blow fairly hot air, but I guess that's its job.Diablo 3 runs with all settings maxed except shadows at 1080p. (Side note, so done with that game. Very hart broken with what they did to that franchise.)
Question. Has anyone used OneKey Recovery to make a backup? I've tried factory settings and current system settings. Both failed at the same place. The first disk burns without issue. The second disk always fails half way through. Any ideas? -

Anyone experience high HDD temps? Someone stated that the HDD is located near the heatsinks of the GPU and CPU, which leads to abnormally high HDD temps (~63C). Any truth to the matter?

I liked the screen on the 580 but the readability sucks. I like reading text better on the HP. Both 1080p panels have their perks. Just depends on what you'll use it for the most.
The 580 feels cheap next to the DV..Ironic isn't it? The build quality is good, but the materials used feel cheap. If I carry it in one arm while walking around, you can hear the blu-ray drive hit the chassis and it is noticeable.
The DV6 has some odd screen bleed (yellowish) like seen on some IPS panels. The 580 does not have screen bleed but if it does, it's usually the LED light leaking in a bit. -
Edit: After another 45 minutes of browsing web with some highly CPU intensive flash HDD is at 44 C, CPU at 40 C, motherboard at 43 C, GPU has no load but the clock oscillates between slow and high rate. When GPU is slow then it's at 33 C, when clock to full speed then 41-45C. Memory bus is overclocked to 2500MHz from standard 2000MHz giving bandwidth of 80 GB/s instead of 64 GB/s.

Thanks loras88 for the HDD temp readings. My gosh, my current laptop HDD (6910p) never goes over 42C even when the CPU hits 80C. It reminds me of this pic of the y580:
The HDD there reaches a scorching 61C!! Then again, I plan to replace the 1TB 5,000 RPM HDD with a Samsung 830 SSD I have waiting on standby. Then I'll place the HDD in a caddy and swap out the ODD like in this post: http://ideapad.it168.com/thread-2207079-1-1.html

As for your SSD question (mSSD I assume), doesn't the y580 come with Intel's Rapid Storage Technology program that lets one set the which drive the 32GB will serve for caching? -
Does someone know what configuration of wifi n has Y580? I mean is it 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 or maybe something else? I could not find this info on their website.
Another thing. There is hidden partition for recovery purposes. Can I somehow disable it (and the dedicated button) to gain space it took from hdd? I won't use it anyway so why waste it.. -

Now for my dilemma, go with the y580 and experience high HDD temps that go beyond the manufacturer's operating temps (typically ~55C), thus hastening the HDD's demise, or go with the hp dv6 and have an abnormally hot exterior coupled with crappy sound drivers? For all of the criticism leveled at hp's build quality and the exterior thermal readings of their pavilion units, they at least keep the internal HDD cool.
Even the recommended environmental temp of my SSD is 60C.@ lenovo engineers.

there is a chart that associates the failure rate (figure 4) to the temp from 10 to 50 +. I am sure they are not the idle temp. -

I am really new to SSDs and am a bit confused regarding a self install upgrade. I saw in the translated post from the Chinese site that the new SSD replaced the original HD's spot and the original HD replaced the CD slot. Is there a way to keep both the CD drive as well as the original HD? As in: is there a way to get the speed of the SSD, the spare storage of the original HD, and the utility of the CD drive?
If so, does anyone want to link me to such an SSD?

So, I picked up my y580 from Fry's today (209942U). I noticed that it had 2 USB 3.0 ports rather than 3 I've seen in a few reviews. Also, an early pet peeve is the inability of OneKey Recovery to create a USB recovery stick, c'mon Lenovo it's 2012!
