    I think he means from a driver standpoint.

    As drivers mature, performance usually increases. Especially when we get final 3xx drivers from nvidia. Those should definitely give a boost to the 660m.

    Hopefully Lenovo also stays on top of the driver situation.

    Ah, that makes sense - should have realized that. I had thought about throwing one of the 3xx beta drivers on it to see how it performs, so that may be on the agenda tonight, as well. First things first, though, redoing everything I just did for my new SSD :( lol

    I can try to put together an installation guide for those that have asked, but what is it exactly you're wanting to know? Just links to the correct drivers, how to partition, or what exactly? Sorry...I'm newer to the forums here but have been messing with computers all my life so something like a clean install seems like second nature to me - if I do a guide I just want to make sure it's what you are looking for :)

    I'm getting slightly lower scores on 3dmark vantage.

    P10948 Combined
    9787 GPU
    and 16995 CPU

    My cpu score seems to be a bit low...

    I also ran it before without the turbo settings from lenovo's energy management widget and I was getting 8800ish for my gpu. So thats probably where the 9300 came from before.

    I guess that might help some people, but it seems like a lot of work that has already been done by plenty of others. Unless you want to do it for fun :)

    I was thinking of trying the 304.48 beta drivers when I do my clean install, but I haven't read great things about them. Might just stick with the ones shipping for now. As long as Diablo 3 runs well and outputs to my plasma, I'll be happy for the time being.

    I had one concern though. What kind of packaging does it come in? Is it just that thin Lenovo box that people have shown in youtube videos? Or is that box inside a larger box? I'm sure there is enough protection but seems like there should a bit more.

    Knowing that my 580 is going to be sitting for two days at the UPS facility twenty minutes from my house is killing me. It's going to be a long weekend.

    That box is inside a larger one. But even still the laptop sits in between two foam pads in the middle of the lenovo box and has plenty of room around it.

    Yeah, or you could give 296.01 a try. People with the ASUS G55VW have been getting excellent scores (11492 with same GPU/CPU) with 296.01. You could find the drivers at laptopvideo2go.com

    He did have a clean windows install. That can definitely make a difference, but his score was significantly higher. Not sure why.

    I'll run the benchmarks before and after doing my clean install to see if that makes any difference.

    well i just got word that the company who does Lenovo repairs in Trinidad might soon cut ties with Lenovo is that's the case then i might not buy the Y580 because ill have to ship it back to the US to fix cant wait that long if sum thing goes wrong. but im awaiting the reviews of the Y580 and DELL XPS 15 before i buy in August September there .... would be nice if some of you can PM me info about how you Y580 is going and your experiences gonna call Lenovo next week and see whats gonna happen to the Caribbean branch of Lenovo in regards to repairs and warranty

    Scheduled delivery isn't until Monday. As long as someone is home to receive it.

    Probably wont be able to get anything done until Tuesday afternoon if all goes according to plan. Full review sometime Wednesday. Hopefully.

    Will definitely run all the benchmarks before and after the clean install.

    Here's a comparison I did between the Y580 and DV6TQE:

    I am seriously stuck between the two. The Y580 has a bit more keyboard flex in some spots than the DV6. The palm rest on the DV6 feels firmer although the LCD panel is like rubber when moved with both hands. The Y580 has flex on the panel but as much.

    And it looks like the Y580 has a lower voltage ram (1.28) while the DV6 runs a standard 1.5V

    Check your background processes, etc. There's not a lot of variability with CPU, certainly no drivers to worry about. 20k 3DMARK Vantage score for CPU is standard.

    Hey. So I got the 1TB + 32 GB SSD version of y580 yesterday and I don't quite understand how the thing is configured. I think the SSD is used as cache but there are no RAID controllers, it's not Intel Rapid Storage (although it is enabled), and there is no mention of anything in the BIOS. Most partition mangers/other software recognize everything as one giant physical disk (which is a 1 TB SSD, lol, I wish), and in BIOS the boot drive is the SSD. Here is a little summary of what I mean http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/6264/questionk.png. So do you guys know how the mSSD is used? What's going on? Windows boot time is pretty neat, it's like 15-16 s, which I attribute to the mSSD.. sequential read/write is order 100MB/s which is more in line with the HDD.

    I gotta thank you all for doing this topic a great place to find info on this great Laptop. I'm choosing a model for me, but it's a hard decision! Your posts surely helps me to decide!

    I have some questions/requests:
    1) Does anyone have a photo from the bottom of this notebook? I haven't seen it yet, even on that review you guys posted!

    2) Does anyone have a photo of the components? Or just the open notebook?
    To see how is the cooling system, internal ports and so...

    The y580 config which comes with mSSD has it configured with SATA3 SSD, see link to picture I posted right above your post. Actually, speccy is a bit confused, but also I checked IRST and it says SSD is SATA III with 6GB/s transfer rate, so I think it's pretty certain that it's SATA3 for the micro connection. Anyways, it's not like your SSD will be able to utilize this transfer rate.

    Thanks for your posts comparing the dv6 and y580. Like you, I'm conflicted whether to return my dv6 and get the y580. I've spent more time going back and forth with HP's service repair shop over the peeling bezel than actually using my new laptop. Does the plastic portion of your dv6 creak and pops whenever you open your laptop? How is the build quality of the y580 compared to dv6? I like the sturdiness of the dv6 keyboard and palm areas but the rest of the laptop, particularly the screen, does not feel like it would hold up over time.

    I'm on the second replacement from HP and it feels a bit more sturdier. But like you said, the LCD cover is weak.

    I wish the Y580 palm rest was sturdy as the HP. My Lenovo palm rest creaks on the right side. Other than that, I like the laptop over all but HATE the bottom casing look. It looks SO OLD.

    I don't get any sort of creaking when I open the DV6. Nor did I have the speaker peeling problem. My first unit and second unit both had a sagging blu-ray drive and somewhat wavy keyboard. The second unit has a less wavy keyboard.

    I'm in a love hate relationship with both..my Y580 has an SSD btw. The HP does not.

    Hi all. I am a new owner of a y580. So far so good. 1080p screen is beautiful. Great viewing angles. Just a bit of backlight bleed trough in places around the bezel but only at extreme angles.

    I've only tried a few games, but they run fine. I haven't installed Fraps so I don't have FPS numbers. The side exhaust does blow fairly hot air, but I guess that's its job. :) Diablo 3 runs with all settings maxed except shadows at 1080p. (Side note, so done with that game. Very hart broken with what they did to that franchise.)

    Question. Has anyone used OneKey Recovery to make a backup? I've tried factory settings and current system settings. Both failed at the same place. The first disk burns without issue. The second disk always fails half way through. Any ideas?

    Continuing on the dv6 v. y580 theme, how is the sound quality coming from the y580? I documented the horrible leveling effect from the dv6 headphone port. Did you find any similar issues with y580's audio output?

    Anyone experience high HDD temps? Someone stated that the HDD is located near the heatsinks of the GPU and CPU, which leads to abnormally high HDD temps (~63C). Any truth to the matter?

    The sound is rich compared to the DV. But, the bass is sometimes non existent. Also the Y580 gets considerably warm in the middle of the bottom casing making it weird to use on your lap. The DV runs cool.

    I liked the screen on the 580 but the readability sucks. I like reading text better on the HP. Both 1080p panels have their perks. Just depends on what you'll use it for the most.

    The 580 feels cheap next to the DV..Ironic isn't it? The build quality is good, but the materials used feel cheap. If I carry it in one arm while walking around, you can hear the blu-ray drive hit the chassis and it is noticeable.

    The DV6 has some odd screen bleed (yellowish) like seen on some IPS panels. The 580 does not have screen bleed but if it does, it's usually the LED light leaking in a bit.

    While I didn't stress test, I did try out Empire:TW on ultra/1080p and HDD temp went to low-mid 50s after a few hours, which is a little too hot. With dedicated card mostly unused and me installing things, after a few hours the hard drive was at 44 C. Just me browsing web right now from battery (booted ~30 minutes ago) the hard drive is 39 C and seems stable (at the same time CPU is now 39 C and motherboard is 42 C, dedicated graphics are off). I think going to 60s is a bit dangerous, but haven't seen it. I think possibly if you have GPU/CPU working and end up spinning the HDD you'll get those temps. Note the fans spin up/down in somewhat complicated fashion, I noticed on moderate load I sometimes get lower CPU/motherboard temps then on very low load because fans work harder, go figure.

    Edit: After another 45 minutes of browsing web with some highly CPU intensive flash HDD is at 44 C, CPU at 40 C, motherboard at 43 C, GPU has no load but the clock oscillates between slow and high rate. When GPU is slow then it's at 33 C, when clock to full speed then 41-45C. Memory bus is overclocked to 2500MHz from standard 2000MHz giving bandwidth of 80 GB/s instead of 64 GB/s.

    If you look at the link you posted in your original post, you'll see that the maximum read speed is like 0.5 GB/s with write speed of 0.2 GB/s. SATA I supports 1.5 GB/s, SATA II supports 3 GB/s, SATA III supports 6 GB/s. So essentially any SATA connection has more than enough bandwidth for your SSD. It's like connecting your gigabit Ethernet switch to a DSL modem. The switch might handle traffic at 1Gbps, but DSL will limit internet to 3Mbps!

    Bump on my question, however. Can somebody explain to me how the version that comes with preconfigured 32 GB SSD works. I understand it has to be some sort of cache, but what exactly and can it be configured?

    Thanks loras88 for the HDD temp readings. My gosh, my current laptop HDD (6910p) never goes over 42C even when the CPU hits 80C. It reminds me of this pic of the y580:

    The HDD there reaches a scorching 61C!! Then again, I plan to replace the 1TB 5,000 RPM HDD with a Samsung 830 SSD I have waiting on standby. Then I'll place the HDD in a caddy and swap out the ODD like in this post: http://ideapad.it168.com/thread-2207079-1-1.html

    As for your SSD question (mSSD I assume), doesn't the y580 come with Intel's Rapid Storage Technology program that lets one set the which drive the 32GB will serve for caching?

    Does someone know what configuration of wifi n has Y580? I mean is it 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 or maybe something else? I could not find this info on their website.

    Another thing. There is hidden partition for recovery purposes. Can I somehow disable it (and the dedicated button) to gain space it took from hdd? I won't use it anyway so why waste it..

    Now for my dilemma, go with the y580 and experience high HDD temps that go beyond the manufacturer's operating temps (typically ~55C), thus hastening the HDD's demise, or go with the hp dv6 and have an abnormally hot exterior coupled with crappy sound drivers? For all of the criticism leveled at hp's build quality and the exterior thermal readings of their pavilion units, they at least keep the internal HDD cool.

    Even the recommended environmental temp of my SSD is 60C. :no: @ lenovo engineers.

    EDIT: An unverified Lenovo engineer discusses (Chinese) the HDD heat problem and apologizes.

    Well, the study you quoted only measures temperatures up to 50C, which is well within the tolerances for HDD. Even at 50C, the AFR (annualized failure rate) starts to rise, but the variation for those data points are high, so I doubt any conclusion that bears statistical significance can be reached (fig. 4). Furthermore, the study did not address operating temperatures that exceeded manufacturers' specifications, here >60C. I would be wary at making blanket statements based on some of the data points alone. Moreover, the materials and methods portion of any proper scientific or engineering paper was strangely missing here, but I saw that it was published as a meeting proceedings, so that is understandable but otherwise frustrating. It simply reads as any meeting abstract. Just don't hold it up as the definitive answer on the subject or you'll be laughed out of the room.

    It comes with mSSD and Intel's RST but within RST control menu there is no "accelerate" option which usually control caching (as far as I understand). In RST both drives are marked as internal system drives with no RAID and there is no way to do anything to them. This makes me think that RST doesn't actually do much (in terms of caching, at least).

    You have a huge HDD, do you really care about that small partition? Anyways, just add it to the main partition using EaseUS or any other free partition manager... maybe you can even do it using window's own partition manager..

    The issue with high density storage is that the magnetic anisotropy energy is pretty low, indeed, this is the primary reason that's holding back HDD storage density (well, that and write heads not being able to produce very strong localized fields). Thus increasing thermal level will push you towards superparamagnetic limit and you'll start to slowly lose data... remember, switching rate ~ exp(-E/kT) so increasing T by say 10% (from operating at 310 K to 340 K) can have quite a bit of impact. As another person mentioned, these things might not matter below say 50 or 60 C but above that they will become important. I don't think mechanical aspect of HDD will suffer too much from the high temperatures (in terms of thermal expansion of moving parts), although they might.

    I am really new to SSDs and am a bit confused regarding a self install upgrade. I saw in the translated post from the Chinese site that the new SSD replaced the original HD's spot and the original HD replaced the CD slot. Is there a way to keep both the CD drive as well as the original HD? As in: is there a way to get the speed of the SSD, the spare storage of the original HD, and the utility of the CD drive?
    If so, does anyone want to link me to such an SSD?

    So, I picked up my y580 from Fry's today (209942U). I noticed that it had 2 USB 3.0 ports rather than 3 I've seen in a few reviews. Also, an early pet peeve is the inability of OneKey Recovery to create a USB recovery stick, c'mon Lenovo it's 2012!

    from what I understand you can either install an ssd drive in the msata II slot or remove the optical drive and put one there

    im pretty sure the msata port is only sata II but that is only based on what ive heard from other users. it shouldnt make a huge difference on user experience but it will definitely show up while benchmarking. it'd be great if someone could verify this.

    yup! i only purchased the 1tb version so im looking for a good deal on a ssd or msata ssd too. ive seen some decent deals but im still not sure what type of setup i want to go for.
