I found one on ebay for $10. Stuck a Samsung 830 SSD in the main HDD (Sata III) slot and replaced my bluray reader (*sniff* *sniff*) with the 1TB 5400rpm Momentus that came with my unit. A simple query of "12.7mm sata to sata caddy" on ebay brings up all of the ones you need. Now looking for an external usb 3.0 enclosure for my bluray drive.

Can someone link a hard drive caddy that anyon ecould purchase to put on their main warranty. Does this void the warranty?

And what is the advantage of using a normal size SSD + HDD on the optical drive bay, than a mSata SDD, keeping the HDD and ODD on the Y580?
The prices seems to be somewhat close between them...

msata ssd's are almost double the price of 2.5"s from what i'm seeing, i.e a 64 msata goes for the same price as a 120 2.5" . That being said i without realizing it apparently ordered a model w/ the blu ray drive so i'm just going to suck it up and pay extra for a msata, really an extra 50$ is nothing.

Also, does it matter if I have the 7500 rpm hard drive as opposed to the 5400 rpm? Also, or that temp, how long are the gaming sessions for?

Is anyone else here waiting for their y580 to arrive? I ordered mine on June 9th and I just checked the order status and it's been delayed another 2 weeks to mid July. Original estimate was less than 2 weeks. Horrible experience so far with Lenovo. Hoping the laptop makes up for it.

I ordered on the 11th and mine is being delivered tomorrow. I think it also depends on the model you got. I ordered the 209948U because at the time it would have taken the least time to ship.

Don't rely on the status page too much. The dates jump all over the place. It might take that long to ship or it might ship much sooner.

So just to be clear, because I'm not very good with laptops, there is an open port for a msata II so I can just stick an SSD in it without having to alter the laptop chassis.

Hope your're right. I ordered the 209937U model (Canadian) and it was supposed to be delivered on schedule this week, but I checked a few hours ago and they delayed it 3 weeks. Checking around the web also revealed people frustrated with usual delays on Lenovo's side.

Not sure exactly. I've been getting conflicting reports. An agent I was chatting with online said the msata is only available on the models with an existing ssd ( 20994HU and 209946U) but iirc, some people on this thread mentioned they have it on other models as well. Can someone else confirm?

Can any1 post numbers for battery life and describe how well the laptop cools itself? Maybe point out some strange quirks analogous with the Dv6t-7000's sound leveling and extreme heat over WASD keys?

Well, dealing with both units I can tell you this:

The Y580 gets warm right below the touch pad under neath the computer. That is where the hard drive resides. Other than that, It's totally fine. I let it sit on my carpet while I watched the whole England v. Italy match today. It did not get hot at all.

When I play D3, the hard drive will get hot but not to the point where you burn your self.

The DV6 keeps cool also. They are very similar but I think the Y580 handles heat much better. The DV6 gets loud when under stress. The Y580 doesn't get as loud. If I leave it in my room. I can't even tell if it's on. It's THAT quiet.

The DV6 always has a fan running..and you can usually hear it. Mind you, I'm anal about my laptops and always have been since I was a middle schooler (yes middle school and now I'm 23 :p)

I'm beginning to think that Optimus is not that efficient. Manual switching is still better like the Radeon since my DV6 Sandy never gets hot on the Intel card weather you're running Flash or watching HD videos. Don't tell me the Nvidia card is being used when running Flash.

As far as I know the nividia is always used unless you manually change it. The software in the y480 isn't in the y580 for some stupid reason :(

Dedicated is definitely not always used. In fact, even when watching movies the display device is still Intel HD Graphics 4000. If you use GPU-Z you'll see that until you run high load (ie a game) the graphics card has no load on it, nothing in the graphical memory, but it does oscillate between between having low clock and normal clock, not sure why.

By the way, I ordered my laptop on 14th and it came on 21st (I am in the US, so-Cal).

That's great. I'm really looking forward to your review.

Could you please then tell us some details about the overall temperature behavior and how warm it gets when you play games (after about >1h). Also, please check out the HDD heating issue and tell us how warm it really gets under load.

I would really like to know the quality of the 1366x768 screen because I can't afford the FHD screen and I want to find out if it's tolerable for gaming or not, so if anyone has the 1366x768 can you review it please :)

The delivery delay is only at Canada or there are delayed notebooks at US too?
I will stay in USA for 3 weeks (starting next week), so I can't wait too much for the notebook after I order it.

Mine was finally delivered! I'm loving the majority of it but imo the trackpad is bad. Anyone know what programs I should keep and what I should remove? I've never owned a laptop before so idk if I should keep the energy one or something.

Also, is it better to go with a msata or to buy a 2.5" ssd to go into the hdd slot, and move the hdd to the ODD?

Sure its tolerable for gaming. Most people dont really game with 1080. Slows down performance. There will be some though who will say otherwise. If theres better resolution out there thats all they will want.

I have to agree with Anthony70. HD screen for gaming is enough in a way that you won't noticed that it's not FHD. Bigger resolution always have impact on performance. Just different games gives different results.

I would go for mSATA because it's better to have big hdd. Recently I read review with benchmarks with mSATA as cache and it's really make a difference. Bigger ssd with mSATA gives better performance but my conclusion was to buy something between 30-70GB.

Msata is a port. A msata ssd is a small ssd that plugs in through msata. It doesn't plug into the ssd, it plugs into wherever the port is. And it is a whole ssd, so yes it can be used for normal storage not just caching.

Does adding an aftermarket msata affect the warranty at all? I went for one of the longer accidental protection ones, but I don't want to void that because I wanted a larger msata than what it came with. Apologies for the obvious question, this is my first dealing with Lenovo though.

Finally got my hands on the box.

Have to go out so don't think I'll be able to get to it until late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Wish it was packaged a little better. It's pretty much the Lenovo box with another cardboard shell over it.

While you're gaming, you may not notice what size your pixels are or how many you have, but you will likely notice the poor contrast of the 1366x768 display versus the good contrast of the 1920x1080 display.

In addition, the notion that you should choose a lower resolution in order to improve game performance is a myth, and is one of the worst misconceptions in computer purchasing. Game performance should not be a reason to choose a 15.6" 1366x768 display instead of a 15.6" 1920x1080 display. For one thing, you can always make up for drops in performance associated with higher resolutions by lowering to a non-native resolution, but you cannot as easily make up for the limits imposed on multitasking by a lower resolution. In addition, despite the fact that running in a non-native resolution causes blur, games will still tend to look better running in a non-native resolution on a 15.6" 1920x1080 display than they would look running in native resolution on a 15.6" 1366x768 display, because of the sheer difference between the image quality typical of these types of displays.

No one told him to get a lower resolution screen for game performance. We are just telling him that games will be fine with 1366x768 and that no one really plays games on 1080 because performance does suffer, His main purpose to get the computer is for gaming. Doesnt want to spend the money for the 1080. But yeah if one is to do multitasking you would want something higher.

Just opened mine up. First impressions are very good. I really like the way it looks. Have the low resolution screen, but it looks decent. Contrast perhaps doesn't seem very good, but I've looked at it for about five minutes.

The keyboard definitely has some flex to it. Looks great and and feels great, but it definitely flexes with moderate pressure. More on the left side.

Going to run some benchmarks and then do a clean windows install.

I downloaded the drivers from Lenovos support page for the 580, but the drivers that come on the second partition seem all random when it comes to the version numbers. I'm assuming the ones from the website are the latest so I will use those.

Will have those benchmarks soon and then again after the clean install. Expect lots of info from me tomorrow :)

Edit : I REALLY hate those stupid stickers they put all over laptops. The lenovo one on the left wasn't hard to get off, but all the little ones for nvidia, intel, and windows were annoying as always. They need to start making those stickers a little less sticky.

@syed, congrats!! if you are going to run furmark, please report back with the HDD temp after some intense work. i'm pretty much set on getting the Y580 and the HDD temp is the only thing that's holding me back.

i was thinking maybe getting an ODD caddy and trading the HDD for a SSD in the main slot and moving the original HDD to the caddy. perhaps this will help with the HDD temp? btw i think the ODD caddy only supports SATA II 3Gbps, is the stock HDD SATA II or III?

sweet! looks like this swap is good way of eliminating the HDD heat.

Yeah, the HDD<->ODD swap was pretty easy. Anyways, I already run my Y580 over a Notepal U3 cooler with the three fans positioned underneath both SSD and HDD. Both drives hover around ~35C while the CPU is typically ~48C.

Pretty happy with the first set of benchmarks. Andrew's Vantage score was definitely off. It should not have been 9300, not even for just the graphics score. These scores are from the machine as it shipped. Just installed the benchmarks and ran them. Nothing else.

Will do a clean install tomorrow morning and then run the benchmarks a final time. Need to check temps as well.

Should have some decent pictures as well.
