holy crap. i just read some threads in the lenovo forum.

this thing has bad QC. graphics glitches and other defects. Seems like an above-normal number of cases.

i hope mine doesn't come with defects.

also, any bios hackers hack this yet? enable Intel RST aftermarket ?

Thanks for the answer! Yep, that's true, it's the same with the Y580, but I've read somewhere in this thread that if you do a clean install (backing up the drivers of course) and delete the recovery partition (usually D) you lose One-Key recovery functionality. But if you say that simply installing it back will do the trick then GREAT! thanks!

After reading stuff about DOA, defects, and bad customer service. Would anyone choose this Sony Vaio S15 over the Lenovo?

Is the price a big difference? With the Sony you have a less powerful GPU, smaller HDD (better RPM though) and a RAM slot wasted due to being fixed onboard. With the Y580 you could get up to 16GB RAM.

If you delete the "d" partition your one key recovery still works fine, if you delete the hidden partition it will no longer work.

Thanks. I didn't know there was a hidden partition. When you do a clean install and you are prompted to wipe partitions and create new ones, that hidden partition appears? Because I was going to erase everything and create new ones.

The actual one is not even posted in Lenovo support page.

Does anyone else find that the power cable, where it connects to the laptop, is a bit flimsy? Mine moves a little if I try to apply some pressure, it's not completely stable.

    Should I be worried?

no. just don't keep pushing on it.
it's not attached to the motherboard. it's probably just not clipped into the case as tightly as it could be. Or maybe the plug is a little smaller than the port.

this is common in many laptops today. The plastic bracket doesn't hold up against the stress. You have to be gentle when plugging in.

If mine breaks in the future, I'm going to do this mod, where the jack is secured to the case.

I wasn't too sure where to ask this, but I figured it would be best to consult people who actually own a Y580.

Basically, I live in the UK, and am appalled at the price hike imposed by Lenovo (with discounts I can get a Y580 for ~£550 compared to ~£1000 straight from Lenovo's UK online store)

What I want to do is use a company like MyUS( MyUS.com - MyUS.com - Top Rated Package and Mail Forwarding) to ship a US model to the UK, then replace the keyboard, change the optical drive region setting and buy a UK charger.

Can anyone think of any reasons why this wouldn't work?

    Thanks

    Just got my Y580.

trackpad is loose. When I lightly tap, the pad rattles.

anyone else have this issue ?

has anyone removed the palmrest ? is it easy to take apart ?

also, if i shrink the C: drive down to 50gb , onekey recovery will still work, right?

Let me know how it goes. How is the left side of your keyboard? Mine makes some louder noises than the rest of the keyboard. I removed the keyboard but the reason it happens is because the CPU fan/heatsink is there and doesnt support the keyboard. Didnt want to block any of the airflow there so im just gonna ignore it. Be wary of the factory disassembly manual as it sometimes leaves out steps/screws you need to unthread.

I am burning in this laptop right now, and it throttles like crazy after only 10 minutes burn in.

My room temp is a little on the high side- like 28C or so.

I am hosing the laptop with furmark and prime 95 simultaneously.
If you don't elevate the laptop to increase ventilation, cpu temps go up to 93C. gpu temp is at 87 C.
If I raise the laptop, cpu temp drops to 88C, gpu at 82C.

i7 cpu has throttled down to 1.6ghz and holding.

HOOOOOOT. Middle of the keyboard hottest.

    Vents are not blocked.

    After 35 minutes,
Intel PCH controller chip directly above the hard drive is hot too, at 82 C.

As the PCH temp went up, Hard drive temp increased from 47 to a burning 64 C !!!

Normal operating temperature for my hdd is up to 55C. So I'm way over the edge. I will kill my hdd prematurely.

power brick is hot to touch. I am going to burn my house down.

    http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/4189/toastyhot1920.jpg
    [IMG]

After shutting down prime95 while keeping furmark running, cpu temps dropped to 65C, gpu down to 77C, but the PCH bridge chip is now the hottest chip on the mobo, at 80 C.
It's toasting my hard drive at 65C still, even with cpu at 1% load.

I am going to try aluminum foil to shield the hdd.

Desktop replacement, this is not. A laptop chassis just isn't right for the 45w core i7.
You cannot put a full load on the cpu and gpu simultaneously, like you can on a desktop.
You can do one or the other, or else it throttles big time.

Received my laptop today and it's amazing but I think it might be defective,

The touchpad goes kinda crazy when I have the computer plugged in, when unplugged it works perfect.

Plugged in it jumps all over the place and starts clicking on it's own. Please god tell me it's just a defect power adapter, because I do not want to return it!

I'll give Lenovo a call tomorrow. Crossing my fingers.

no game really stresses the computer like what I did with furmark + prime95. These are extreme limits, which the laptop form factor cannot handle.

during games, cpu load is usually light.

my cpu is down to 40C, gpu 38C, and that PCH chip is still a hot 63C.

that thing just doesn't cool down fast at all. It should have been joined to the cpu/gpu heatsink, the way other laptops are.

On my asus laptop, the hard drive has zero ventilation, and is able to stay in the 40C's

I find it a bit odd that you were throttled down to 1.6 at 93C, max operating temp for the chip is 105, i've hit 98 playing GW2 with no throttling, holds steady at 3.1 ghz

did you monitor the clocks with hwinfo64 on a 2nd screen?

as soon as mine hits the 80's, it throttles down to 1800-1900mhz

i would assume all i7's behave the same way

however, if i limit load to 2 cores, it seems to stays at 2.3ghz.
half load cpu + full load gpu = no throttling.

Greets, guess I gotta ask my question a different way as I got no answer the first time...

For the Y580, if I buy a 64GB mSATA card, should I buy SATA II or SATA III mSATA card? Which is compatible with our notebook or it doesn't matter?

    Thanks...

Wrong idea. The reason they aren't fixed to the chassis is because that would be more sensitive. When the connector can move slightly it is less likely to fail.

i fixed the 'loose' trackpad last night.

see the metal bracket where the mouse buttons are? in the center, there is an oval protrusion that clicks the small mouse button on the underside of the trackpad. there is a millimeter of space between the button and the bracket.
I unscrewed that bracket, cut out several small pieces of tape, and layered them on the protrusion to reduce the space. Now the trackpad is silent when tapping on it.

well clearly it doesn't work well because many people get broken sockets because the plastic brackets inside fail.

anyway, I disassembled the laptop last night, and tested the ac jack. it has some wiggle because the inside of the socket doesn't fit like a glove, but doesn't affect function. It's not something worth RMA'ing.
The socket is secured to plastic brackets, which can eventually crack if you abuse the ac jack.

When my laptop is idle/not in use, i notice that the gtx660m gpu "shuts down" by itself. (Speedfan would just monitor the gpu temp as "00").

Only way i can bring it back to life is to reboot my laptop. Otherwise, launching a game would use the intel hd4000 instead. Any way to reactivate the gtx660m without rebooting the laptop?

    Hi, guys!

Did anyone try to upgrade RAM with Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz ( Amazon)?
I bought this kit today and installed it instead of preinstalled Hynix 4Gb-1600-12800-CL11.
Then during 1st boot BSOD appeared. I ran memtest and it showed whole bunch of mistakes :(
Corsair's site states that this kit is "Compatible with most laptop and notebook PCs", but what is wrong then? Is Y580 not among those "most laptop and notebook PCs" or just faulty memory? BTW I also tried to install only one module instead of two but it didn't help.

Thanks in advance and sorry, if that issue was discussed earlier! I couldn't find the answer.

first of all, you should have read the technical specs of the CPU. If you navigate through this page:
    ARK | Intel® Core

you will see that this CPU supports DDR3 1600MTs as maximum speed, so you wasted your money buying faster RAM. 2 Theories:
1.- Lenovo's BIOS does not underclock the memory to 1600, and it might have attempted to run at 1867MTs where DDR training algorithms are not robust enough to support the OS load.
2.- DIMMs are faulty and cannot operate at 1600MTs.
My advice is go back to your Hynix DIMMs.

    Hi guys,

I ordered a Y580 recently too. Before this I had a Y480 that I ended up returning because of a defective screen. That machine got pretty hot up to 85C on GPU. Anyways I was wondering if I decide to do a clean install on an MSATA SSD, do I HAVE to delete all of the partitions on the HDD? I want to be able to keep One Key Recovery on my HDD in case something craps out. I plan on following the Y570 guide posted earlier on this thread of doing a clean OS install onto an MSATA SSD.

I hope using an mSATA SSD would solve any HDD heating issues. I only have a Belkin laptop cooler with one fan (I don't plan on spending another $20 for a U3). Someone posted earlier in this thread that they managed to lower their temps by just housing their OS and most of their apps on the SSD and letting the HDD spin down when it's not in use. I plan to just use my HDD for storage anyway (documents, pictures, music, etc). A plus is that even if you open something from the HDD, it'll still spin down as long as you don't have to open another file .

Also another question, if I put say Microsoft Office on my SSD and my documents and powerpoints on my HDD would there be any conflict in opening them? I don't need the documents to open fast persay (that's why they're on the HDD) I just want Office to open faster whenever I need it. Would this cause Office to load slower if all of the files they're accessing is on the HDD? From what I've researched, it seems that it wouldn't slow down.

In my 1st post I forgot to mention that I own Lenovo Y580 with i5-3210M. I really should have read the technical specs of the CPU first, but I was misled by this review. Author tested memory in ASUS N56VM with Intel i7-3720QM and it worked like a charm. So I thought it would work for me too.
BTW Intel says i7-3720QM supports the same type of memory (DDR3/L/-RS 1333/1600) as i5-3210M. So I believe there is a problem in Lenovo's BIOS.
Anyway today I gave this memory kit to my co-worker, he will test it on his laptops. Tomorrow I will let you know the results.

For those of you who just received the laptop this week, can you guys install those important updates through "window update"? I keep getting "fail to install updates" message and requiring me to restart afterward. After restarting from failing updates, then I click into the window updates again. Fail to update again... what's going on ?

oh boy. the metal shell scratches easily. even more so than plastic.
i put it on a book, and spun it 180*, and it put some light scratches in it.

Also, Optimus won't turn off my gpu during idle.

gpu-z says the gtx is running at 135/202 during idle. It says 0% load. But sometimes it spikes to full clocks 835/1250 for no reason.

How do you turn off the dgpu completely?

    Hi guys.
The Lenovo Y580 just came to my country (Slovenia) "officialy" so I just ordered it from one of the shops that are selling it.
The thing I just noticed is that the laptop is listed to come with a i7 3630QM while so far what I have seen is that they come with the i7 3610QM.

I do not know if this is a wrong listing but if it is right I'm sure happy with it :p.
The other thing I also noticed is that the laptop won't have a blu-ray reader. I am not really bugged by that since I do not have any blu-ray discs.

I have been monitoring this thread a bit and I sure hope I won't have some of the problems that you guys are having.

I never owned a laptop before. Well my mother had one but it has been very long and it was an old HP.

So maybe I won't have as strict criteria as some of you guys.

I will post about the laptop and what my experience is with it when I get it.

In the future if I will have some concerns with the heating some people are reporting about I think the best thing will be to buy a cooler for it (U3 most probably).

Well happy to join this community and I hope I won't regret it :p.

    Cya guys!

Is the Nvidia card selected in GPU-Z? If you run HWiNFO concurrently, you will find that it will see the Nvidia GPU if it is selected in GPU-Z. If you select the Intel chip in GPU-Z, HWiNFO will only see the Intel chip. In the end, selecting the Nvidia GPU under GPU-Z will turn it on and leave it on. The problem for you is that you need to have the Nvidia GPU on in order to monitor it and logically using GPU-Z to monitor the Nvidia GPU will leave it on.

To answer your question directly: Exit GPU-Z.

Some apps also use the dgpu automatically like Adobe Acrobat. Just set it to use Intel for apps like this. The Nvidia GPU Activity status is very helpful and I recommend that it should be displayed on the taskbar forever.

    good answer.

i didn't even think about gpuz calling out the gpu and preventing it from turning off.

right now, it's completely disabled. will be good for battery. I set everything except games to run off of hd4000

Mine does that too, it's normal for cheaper/not high quality LED backlit screens. LED backlights actually lower the backlight by flickering, lower the brightness the more it flickers, at most brightnesses the flicker is too fast to be seen by the human eye.

    edit:
I monitored it with coretemp, it definitiely stays at a solid 3.1 until 100 C at which point it clocks down, just retested it with prime95

Did you guys check your screen refresh rate? Maybe its the cause of the flickering?

Looking into buying this laptop, can you do a factory reset from it?
