Wow, that's a really good idea, I never thought of that. Can anyone else confirm that the HDD spins down in this case? Because that would save me a lot of trouble since I could just install one mSATA and keep the ODD instead of losing the ODD and having to buy $60 worth of caddies or something.
-
I've been surfing the internet for the past 45 minutes and it hasn't spun up once. This thing is as silent as a block of wood. -

I saw in this thread some talking about testing the 3D as the GPU supports it. Ha anyone actually tried it? Would be interesting to see if it actually works
And why can't I install the Wireless Display drivers after a fresh install? it does it is not support on this platform ( I'm on Win7 64 HP ) -
first off let me say i have the sony hmz-t1 2d/3d head mounted display works via hdmi only. ok with that said i need major help before i go nutz.. has anyone confirmed this runs with 3d vision out the hdmi port? because no matter what i install i can't get a "3d signal detected) or stereoscopic to show up in the nviai control panel on the y580 GRRRR
can anyone help me i just got the new lenovo y580 i7 cpu 8gig ram 660m gtx 2gb video card hdmi out...with integrated intel hd4000
i can't for the life of me get this to work i've tried installing all drivers etc.... i can get the headset to ouput it doesnt say 3d signal detected
no you can't disable the intel card im coming from a 2 year old desktop i can get the headset to work with games fine the screen has the left side pushed off a litle.. but regardless games fit perfect on screen and the headset will say 1080p /2ch sound etc
i can't for the life of me whatever i install get nvidia surround gaming to shop up in nvidia control panel im begining to think this laptop/setup will not output support 3d vision via the hdmi and that's the only way to interface the card.. -

Do all the Y580 models have an mSATA port?? I talked to a Lenovo sales rep who said ONLY the models sold with an SSD already included have the port, but reading forms seems to contradict this. I would LOVE to keep the 1TB drive in there as storage and snag an mSATA for the OS and a couple games.
Thanks -
I did a fresh install on my y580 but now I dont seem to be able to find the video player which plays Blu Ray discs. What application are you using now? Can I download it anywhere from Lenovo website?

Owners, do you all have this weird sound when move the lid:

And my unit has keyboard placement from drunk china mad, some corners are higher then others. -

But I am not sure if all of them are like that.

So tried to remove my 750GB SATA hard disk (leaving my mSATA 64gb in the machine) to try and install windows on the msata but could not get the mSATA drive to show up on partition list of the windows 7 installer. I also am not sure how to convert the msata to a basic drive as someone else suggested. Any suggestions?

Its shown there, its also in device manager.. it's a Samsung 64gig.

Try this
PowerDVD 10 BD
Let me know if it worked.
Edit:
I read you may have problems with the software. If so, apparently you'll have to download an update. Click on the link below and follow the link that says this patch update

I think its Lenovo's drivers basically converging both hard disks into one. I wonder if I just reformat all my partitions (and make backups of my drivers etc)... and then go from there. Seems an attractive option. -
will give it shot!

Can i install windows 7 in 32gb msata?
-
Is anyone else having issue with Windows Media Player when they use the Fn+F11 and F12 hotkeys? With my computer it's causing Windows Media to be unable to find any of my music files. I have to restart the computer in order to get Windows Media to work again, but the hotkeys are still nonfunctional
-
To install Windows 7 on my mSATA, I simply popped it in, booted into the pre-installed Windows 7 on the HDD, opened the disk manager, initialized the disk as GPT, put the Windows 7 disk in the ODD, and rebooted into the installation. Both hard drives were listed. I then deleted the system and the OS partitions on the HDD and installed the OS on my mSATA. Done.
Good luck! -
Problem is that Lenovo's drivers combine the sata and msata drives, making it impossible to isolate the msata and convert to GPD as you say.

Is there any way to output 2560x1440 from this laptop?

Onekey theatr button stopped working on top of the laptop. And recovery one doesn't do a thing. Any solution?

I have a question. If I will buy the 64 GD ssd version of Lenovy Y580, can I install Windows 7 on the SSD? I heard there were some problems and that disk couldn't be used as an install disk, and I'd like to know from someone that actually used it like that.
LE: Here is the laptop: Google Traducere
The price is NOT in GBP, but in RON (Romanian Leu) - it seems it translated in the wrong way in there.
Thanks. -

Is anybody getting random MINOR frame drops / stuttering while gaming? It's start happening a few days after I received the laptop.
-
Guys... I'm devastated.
Today, as I was booting, I noticed for a single second a prompt for chkdsk, but it didn't start and the boot went on normally.
I looked into it and it seems that the HDD C was marked as 'dirty' and I wanted to clear the flag... so I ran chkdsk at boot time..
It all went well, up until the last stage, where it claimed " Adding 840741119 bad clusters to bad clusters file"
Now... obviously this is a titanic amount... and when it finished, everything booted normally, nice and smooth, until I open 'My Computer" and see that there's 1.25GB left on the HDD... I even downloaded TreeSize and it shows all the normal data that should be there, no suspicious giant files..
From what I can gather, the CHKDSK app marked the entire free space of the HDD as bad clusters, and now I can't use it...
The Y580 is running fine right next to me, but HDD capacity is - to put it bluntly - screwed up, crippled to hell.
Is there a way to fix this? I'm currently copying over my files to the desktop, but I am very upset and depressed that this happened on my new computer that I paid so much money for.
Can someone please direct me on what to do? What emergency steps should I take? Shall I use OneyKey recovery to make backups?
>>>>>EDIT: Where is the Windows 7 image file located? I could really use burning it to a DVD... OneKey recovery lets me to something similar, but it asks for 380GB of space, taking into accoun the "fake" used space... -

So I moved my HDD to the ODD bay. What a giant pain the neck! The screws that attach that metal piece to the top of the ODD (that you screw into the laptop itself to hold it in place) wouldn't fit in the holes on the top of the HDD caddy. Also, the HDD didn't fit snug into the caddy, so when turning it upside down the side opposite to where it was connected would actually hang outside the caddy. I don't think I did anything wrong, but the parts just didn't seem to fit one another.
Anyway, I played about 2 hours of Guild Wars 2 using it and I alt tabbed to check my temps, and it got as high as 48C! With a Notepal U3 cooler underneath it! That's only like a 8C difference, I expected much more!
Did I do something wrong, or is this normal? -
Yeah, the ODD arm screws were not exactly a perfect fit for my ODD caddy also but I managed to screw it in fine with a little patience. As for the temps, the highest I've seen my go is 41C (w/o the U3 cooler). Granted, my HDD is the 1TB 5400rpm Samsung/Seagate. Drives with higher RPMs tend to run hotter. -
Side question. I just bought an ssd and I am going to be putting that into the HDD bay. Would I need those screws that the harddrive was screwed into the bracket with? I don't know if my SSD will come with any screws. -
I used one key recovery and it returned the laptop to the state it was when I first activated it. Great tool, it saved me.
I'm not running CHKDSK again, or any other built-in windows tool for maintenance.
I'm almost sure that that thing messed up the HDD.
Thankfully, it's all good now. Hooray for OneKey Recovery! -

did Lenovo test hinge durability this time, along with chassis flex when opening?
I see from the teardown pics that the hinge is anchored into the vulnerable corner of the plastic case.
one drop on that corner and the hinge is toast. -

for those failing at the installation of specific software from Lenovo after a clean install because SW does not detect the computer as Lenovo, have you tried creating an OEM file and see if that resolves the issue?

Greets, hope we can use this thread for Y480 support also as they are almost basically the same machine except for a lower end Nvidia card and screen size... right?
Got three questions if I may:
1) This little empty port that I got where I can stick an mSATA card, is that SATA II or III compatible? Reason being I am looking at newegg to get a 64GB mSATA card but I just noticed there are either SATA II or III available and want to be sure I get the right one.
2) Anyone try out the new Nvidia 306.02 beta drivers yet available for nvidia site? Just wondering before I do so.
3) Has anyone installed Lenovo RapidBoot software after doing a clean install? I can't find that software on the Lenovo driver/software page. Just hoping for some guidance if it's worth it and where exactly to find it.
Cheers -
Looking to buy a Y580 here, but was wondering if this has been figured out by anyone. I'd really like a backup source for a 3d Blu-ray player instead of my main computer, and this is essentially all that is holding me back from buying one.
If anyone can determine if this does indeed play 3d Blu-ray movies (on an external monitor, of course), please chime in. It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! -
