If you're talking about the factory SSD, you will probably only have enough space for the OS and a few applications/programs. Boot time may only be slightly faster than what Rapid Drive would give you but a lot of the times Rapid Drive boot still takes only around 20 seconds. And any application you open on the SSD will just open in less than a second and work faster. These are the pros.
The cons are it takes some work and you may have to reinstall drivers. Plus you may also disable One Key Recovery by reformatting partitions.

Thanks Voozers -that's great, much appreciated.

It requires the OKR7 engineering disc though, which i've uploaded in the official lenovo forum.
the disc rebuilds the recovery partition, and backs up your custom OS install, with your own partition sizes.
It uses a slightly older version of OKR7 though.
I'm currently experimenting on a way to keep the newer OKR program files in the hidden partition.

Hey guys, do you have idea, where I can buy it with Full HD monitor, the SSD and Blu-ray writer? I saw it at Newegg but it doesn't come with the 64gb SSD.
-
I followd the instructions above (running RapidDrive to seperate the SSD and HDD) to install the windows on the SSD. And i succeeded! I used the SSD for the C partition and the rest 1T I made into 2. Right now its boots up in 14-15seconds
(nothing installed yet nothing in the background just windows).

is there a detailed guide for moving your HD to the optical drive bay? i have the HD to optical drive mount thingy but dont wanna crack open my laptop w.o knowing exactly what to do.

So I installed some of the drivers that were on the D drive when purchasing the laptop. I am just curious how much space do you guys still have on the C folder (assuming u reinstalled windows on the SSD). I have windows/drivers on it and its taking a whopping 27.7GB which I think is huge. I did not install any program on to the C partition. The only things that got installed there are the things that make some files on C regardless of where you put them.
Most drivers also installed in C. Too bad there isnt an option to install them on other drives. Atleast I did not notice? Or is there?
Please report your C space taken.

Have you guys tested out the new drivers from Nvidia for the gtx660m? How are they? Better than the default driver?
-
But can I ask what they are for? What am I risking with them disabled? -

Does anybody else have the problem described in the following thread in the Lenovo forums?
To test, place your Y580 on a flat surface (i.e. a table). Make sure your power adapter is plugged in to your laptop. Place a finger on the touchpad and watch the pointer on your display to see if it moves/jerks around. Movement is tiny, but enough to annoy.
If you repeat the test above, but this time, unplug your power adapter and run on battery, the touchpad doesn't jump around anymore.

I've had this laptop for two weeks now and it's incredible! The Fhd screen is beautiful specially considering how cheap this system is if you look around a bit. I'm getting 2600 3Dmark 11 with stock drivers and overclocked I can get it up to 3100 but after that I see tearing.
Played Skyrim with high settings no problems. And so far I seem to have no problems playing any game whatever. Also really sweet with the windows 8 upgrade coming soon.
I did try the Asus G55 and build quality felt better, and screen was probably easier to read on. But from what I've seen temperatures are lower on y580, rarely break 70 on cpu o gpu while gaming without coolingpad and the price difference was around $300 for almost exactly same specs.
If anyone wants a good low cost gaming rig this is definitely a great deal! -
^^ I have no trackpad problem either.
with 8gb ram, almost nothing.
if any app ever complains about no pagefile, just put a small one on the platter hdd. -
-
I just finished clean installing windows, repartitioned the hard drive, backed up my custom OS installation, and kept the Onekey Recovery button function, which will reinstall my custom OS if i ever need it.
no special tools needed if you still have your recovery partition. it's actually pretty easy.
Will write up instructions soon. -

I can't believe such an integral system indicator was not included... I could certainly do without the touchpad indicator if it was replaced with a useful HDD light. There is plenty of space on either side of current lights as well, surely they could have added a couple more such as HDD and WiFi...
Also, heads up everyone, the latest Nvidia driver (306.23) is finally out of beta! Hooray!
I am downloading it now and will do some gaming benchmark comparisons after installing it!

I am looking for a cooler since the y580 is heating up a bit while gaming. The HDD does reach and sometimes pass the magical 55degrees limit. I know you guys are suggesting the Notepal U3 but I have been looking around on the web and I cant seem to find it in my country (Slovenia). So im asking you to suggest a diffrent one. Whats the next best thing? Is the U2 good since that one is available. Also does anyone know if all of the 3 vents on the back suck air in? Or are some blowing it out?
Thanks -
Thanks -

I bought the Notepal X Slim since many people that didn't buy the U3 recommended it. I haven't tested it yet though.

Hi guys, took the decision to blow my 2 year savings onto a y580 (120Hi guys, took the decision to blow my 2 year savings onto a y580 (1200 Euros in the recession stricken Greece). Just finished reading the whole thread and decided to do the following (system came with 750gb hdd+64bg msata):
-Repartition the HDD-SSD combo using the Rapid drive tool.
-Do a clean install of my win7 pro copy in a new partition used by the mSSD and the HDD (using Rapid drive). I cannot use the mSSD purely as a boot/app drive because the rest of the application i use (Matlab, CAD software, GW2 etc) don't fit in.
-Install latest drivers from lenovo.com
-Use OKR tool to backup my new OS config to another partition, according to link626 instructions (hopping that he will make a guide).
Is my plan feasible? Any other factors i should (re)consider? -
thats why a specific step by step guide for moving your HDD to the optical drive bay would be great if there is one around these forums or something -

im sending mine back to amazon for a full refund.. sadly i have the 8gb blueray burner/rambo flavor version ill be sending it back since it obviously wont do 3dtv play/3d tv/monitor via the hdmi.... lame.... thanks lenovo....

i forgot to mention I don't have an msata ssd in mine.
so i'm not sure how that will work with two physical drives since i don't have 2. But it doesn't hurt to try it if you're going to clean install and not use the ssd as a cache anyway.
Basically, Onekey recovery seems to launch from any hidden oem partition, then looks for the OS partition, and backs that up.
Ideally, you want the recovery partition on the hdd, and OS on the ssd, and force it to recover to the ssd.
the default method I use will most likely dump the recovery partition on the ssd and eat up 15gb of space. -
I don't know why it happened but I was really very annoyed, cursor kept jumping about everywhere and then just became non-responsive.
I do wish Lenovo had tried harder on this laptop. -
Here are the temps. of my Y580 after playing CS:GO for a while. I know that the HDD temps are too high and I will be getting a cooler soon. Just wanted to ask you for your opinion any other components are overheating? Should I worry about otherstuff aswell as the HDD?
Earlier I also asked for suggestions about a cooling pads since I cant seem to get the U3 in my country. soulkyo suggested the Notepal X Slim which weird enough also is not available here...
I checked one of the more popular online stores here and some of the more expensive models are the Zalman ZM-NC2000 and Cooler Master Notepal U. Does anyone own one of these and could give his opinion? Or suggest a third option and I will check online for it.
And I would also like to ask someone to tell me what components the 3 vents on the back are? Which one is for the HDD? Since its the thing im worried about the most.
Thanks.

Well, as promised here is my update on the new drivers...
I tested Just Cause 2, NBA 2K11 and Skyrim as they are my most played games plus JC2 has an inbuilt benchmark.
After all that anticipation, it is barely even worth posting the results as there is little difference either way!
It remains to be seen if there any improvements in newer titles though, the massive improvements mentioned in the release notes are unfortunately only for other GPUs, though that can possibly be seen as a good thing as perhaps it means there was nothing requiring a fix...
Hopefully it will correct my major issue with Mount & Blade: Warband crashing, but only time will tell on that one as it is completely random, sometime I last an hour or two, other times 15 minutes.
After all that I updated the Intel drivers to the latest version from Intel as well. I was hoping to fix the annoying Picture Viewer crash in Win 7 x64 and early testing shows that it does, but time will tell on that one as well because it was kind of random also. -
We should see an improvement in our GPU's performance now that Nvidia released a Desktop version of our card.
The new 650 GT runs off the same GK107 and even has the same SP count that we have in our laptops. If Nvidia plans on releasing Gk107 specific fixes and improvements, we'll most likely be treated to some boosts as well

hey STEAM users is anyone else playing SLEEPING DOGS tm <- lol tm ... and getting crashes a lot??? hkskip.exe ?? anyone else have crashes it doesnt like fullscreen either and doesnt start in full screen ... steam checked the cache files all 100% anyone? thanks.

I use the Notepal X Slim cooler, which fits perfectly for the Y580, but looks like you've mentioned that it's not available in your country. My coworker who also has a Y580 uses the U2, which he says has been working well for him and it's not as large as the U2 since it has one less fan. I'm not sure if the U2 is available, but that would be worth looking into. -

Just bought a Y580 with the 32GB SSD and I was wondering how to actually use the SSD. I've read about the built in RapidDrive technology and how it automatically determines which files and processes to move to the SSD to enhance performance, but I was wondering if that also applies to games. For example, if I want to put Skyrim on the SSD to make it perform better, will the RapidDrive thing automatically improve performance? If not, how do I go about putting files on the SSD manually? I don't see it in My Computer, only the 1TB C drive and a Lenovo D drive.
-
The Lenovo D drive probably is 32gigs right? Thats the SSD. -
The SSD is set up to be a virtual drive, so you wont necessarily see it under "my computer." You will probably have to use the rapid drive tool to disconnect the sata and msata drives, and then reinstall your OS. But with a 32gb drive i dont think you'll have room for windows 7 plus games.. so i would just leave the rapid drive caching setup that you've got going.
For example I installed Win7 on my 64gb SSD and it uses almost 30 gig. -
If you want OS and Skyrim I recommend a 128GB mSATA SSD over the 32GB. -
For those still wondering about SSD setup for Win 7 check out this optimization guide at The SSD Review.
