It's not that effective. It's just effective. It really depends on how you will use your notebook.
If you talk about model without mSATA port then don't buy it and take one that has it. But if it only doesn't have mSATA drive then you can buy without it and later, when you get some additional money, buy some mSATA SSD and put it in. This way you can also choose what kind of drive will you install.
-
Thanks, that did the trick!
-
Wait, some models don't have mSATA? I was planning on purchasing the following model of the Y580 and adding a 64gb mSATA drive, does anyone know if it has an mSATA slot?
FRYS.com | LENOVO -
I think I have the same flaw, I made a thread about it, gotta give Lenovo a call.
I like my y580 so don't really wanna deal with a return (got it thru their EPP so don't think i can return it anyways) but if I send it in will my HDD be erased? I transferred all my stuff over plus downloaded a few games and will be a female dog to move it somewhere else. Do they fix it or just replace it? -
That's weird tbh, didn't hear about any Y580 without mSATA slot ...
-
Just received my Y580 around 2 hours ago.
Quite impressed, but runs quite hot while gaming.
Does anyone else have a problem where one side of the screen is tinted yellow while the other side is fine? It's quite annoying to have it do this. -
Wait, is the tint software or is the physical screen actually tinted yellow on one side?
Could you fullscreen pure white and take a photo of the screen?
Oh, and do you have the low-res or high-res version? -
Can anyone post anymore vids about the y580 i seen like every vid so far.
-
I don't know. There were few people here that suggest things like that.
The problems is that stores mostly have no idea what is inside what they selling. I didn't get confirmation when I was buying mine and I had to open it to be 100% sure.
-
your are right, looks like the 999 dollars one on Fry's website should not be FHD.
-
Best Buy is selling the FHD version for only $899 last time I checked. But it's still out of stock.
-
I called Fry's 408# to confirm that the Y580 on their website had a 1920x1080 display before picking it up the next day (note: I didn't inquire the model the OP listed). It was refreshing to hear a customer service rep that didn't speak with an Indian accent. Although any calls to Lenovo's service center will net one over there.
-
Whoa...Why do we talk about FHD right know and not about mSATA, thing that I answered to? Am I missing something?
-
I just want to say maybe what's on their website is not accurate. Just "maybe" if you google the model number and you may find something.
-
Oh, ok. I think I've got it now.
-
If you use the integrated graphics the whole time how long will the battery last?
-
It's physically tinted on the left side and I have the low res version of the screen.
50% Brightness
100% Brightness
Y580 vs Thinkpad
It seems that this is a physical problem as a screenshot and an external monitor doesn't have this problem. -
And so the problems began...I wanted to install ssd as cache. First thing - there were no screws to fasten ssd to motherboard both from Lenovo and ADATA and even with all my screws that I have I couldn't find proper one (this nasty one is really small). Lucky enough I found it in my notebook that I use when need to recover something. So I borrow one.
After that I went to BIOS to change SATA mode to RAID as I've red somewhere...Surprise, surprise - no option in the menu. Only AHCI and Compatibility modes.
Undeterred with all of this, I changed boot order to HDD because BIOS automatically putted SSD on top and boot OS only to see blue screen and right after that - reboot. Right now I turn on recovery mode... -
Just became available.
Should I pull the trigger and buy it? I'm getting mixed opinions.... -
just a tip for everyone with the y580. make sure to try the onekey theater button. makes the sound sooo much better even when plugged into headphones. cant believe i neglected to try it till now.
-
Ok OS works and seems without any harm...But I have no idea how to install SSD as cache...I'm starting to thinking that maybe it's wrong question and proper one should be: IF there is a way to do that. :/ Of course I can't find any info anywhere.
edit: i found somewhere that there is a way to make ssd as cache but this was done on Lenovo's side. I still didn't find any solution to what I should do. Most disappointing is Lenovo itself with lack of any information regarding this topic on their website or user manual...If hadn't to spent so much time on this I would finish my review of Y580 and now I don't have any time left
edit2: I gave up for now. Tomorrow I'll call support and hear what they have to say about this...It will be funny because Y580 isn't even listed on support page in Poland and yet I can buy it... -
I can only use a 2'5" SSD drive if I wanted to take out the original HDD or the ODD? I can use a mSATA SSD drive without problems though?
Can someone suggest a good mSATA drive between 64-128gbs? -
I found out that there is probably two versions of y480/y580 with two different BIOS. And only if you've got model with mSATA SSD pre-installed as cache, BIOS will have RAID SATA mode...If that's true then...It is really low for Lenovo to do so. I'll check that tomorrow with their support.
-
Sorry about your problem i would help but im technically inclined, however do you know when youlll be done the review for the y580?
-
Maybe tomorrow I'll find time to correct all language mistakes and to put photos and screenshots.
-
Is it possible to also due a video aspect on youtube of the y580. If its possible : )
-
Sorry but I'm not sure if I understand you correctly. You asking me to do some video of something?
-
Yea like a video review on youtube of the y580
-
Sry, but no way.
I don't think of myself as good reviewer when we talking about writing stuff and video? That would be disaster
-
Hey guys, I have a somewhat quick request.
Could someone who owns the Y580 please connect it to a 1080p monitor and set the graphics to extend the screen? I'd like to know if the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M can handle two displays, and to what point it can handle strenuous tasks such as a 3D game on one monitor and a Blu-ray movie on the other.
Thanks a ton in advance!
-
Well, only if you like the "movie" mode of the display.
You can do the same thing with the sound, in the "normal" display mode, via the Realtek HD Audio Manager. Just change the SRS Premium Surround Sound from Normal to Movie.
That's not saying that it's pretty neat, for Lenovo to integrate their One Key Theater into one master setting for the display, and audio. -
Is the RAM easily upgradable on this laptop? Thinking of getting the BB model (900$!!!) but upgrading the RAM later.
-
Think it this way. Extra 36 dollars gives you Blu-Ray, 7200rpm hard drive and 2 gb extra RAM. Why would you buy it from Best Buy?
One more thing. 55 dollars extra for 3 years of extended warranty. can't beat that for the price. -
Just bought the IdeaPad Y580 - 209945U plus 3 years extended base warranty for $1,073.92 including tax. Didn't think 1 TB + 32gb mSSD is worth extra 150 dollars. I would rather invest that money in SSD later on. Can't wait to get my hands on it...
-
Hmm, I did a clean install with all of the drivers in the /Lenovo partition and I don't have the SRS audio tab. According to Lenovo, Y580s and Y480s don't come with SRS Premium Sound. They do come with Dolby Home Theater. One can access this sound enhancement by right clicking the volume icon>playback devices. Click "properties" and bring up the Dolby tab. Click the on/off button to activate the Dolby Surround Sound. Sadly, the setting is not kept when switching back to normal view. I wonder where one could modify the one-key theater settings.
-
I've had to submit a service request for my new y580, apparently the GPU is messed.
Ughh, repair turnaround is "7 business days" -
There is some yellowish tint but I don't think it's a deal breaker. I didn't even notice it the first time I saw the pic. We will be looking at the screen mostly in colors unless you use notepad 90% of the time.
-
Hmmm, I was so excited to order this laptop. I just had to wait until my credit card payment went through so I had enough to buy the laptop. Too bad it was a holiday weekend, making it take forever and a day..
It just went through now and of course since Lenovo's on EST the deal is over. Does anyone here have any experience with dealing with Lenovo rep's over the phone? Think I have any chance of getting them to honour the deal?
This is Lenovo Canada by the way, if it makes any difference. -
Lenovo's laptop deal refresh very often, and most of the time they discount to the exact same price. The Y580's been on discount about 3-4 times already, and each time the 768p and 1tb hard drive model has always discounted to $899.
-
i didnt have the srs audio tab either. i havent done a clean install of windows but im not sure if the audio drivers have updated.
i did end up changing it through playback devices>properties on the sound icon like ssri suggested since i didnt enjoy the "movie" display either -
Can the owners of the y580 post some screen shots of the bios or just tell me if the bios is locked down with not many options to change?
-
BIOS doesn't have too many options. You can change boot order, SATA mode and few other options that doesn't need to be changed at all (like Intel Virtualization Technology).
-
So no chipset or advanced settings like asus. Thats a real bummer.
-
Does anyone know if the y580 at frys has the full hd panel or the 720p one?
-
The one at $999 says 15.6 Full HD display, so this is the FHD = 1080p
-
Ok, I did some investigation and if what I found is correct then it's really disappointing.
The key: chipset. If Y580 has HM76 and informations about it are correct then it won't support both RAID (in any configuration) and Intel Smart Response (caching). And that would means also that those version with pre-installed caching aren't using smart response!Attached Files:
-
-
:O That's pretty bad. Now it's for sure that I rather don't buy the Y580.
-
The problems is that most notebooks from this price range has this chipset (Asus n56VZ for example) so they won't support Intel's technology
I was talking with Lenovo's support and now I'm still waiting for them to check everything. It's possible that those models with pre-installed chache has better chipset but I wouldn't count on this.
