So for me the one reason I did not go to either the Duo 13, MBA or Samsung was that the Yoga Tent tablet mode just works so much better if you want to use the Yoga as a touch screen, the Duo 13 was close BUT with the screen exposed it made me too wary of arriving with a broken screen, unlike the Yoga which reverts to clam shell for storage.

Hey everyone, first off thank you for this (and the release) thread. Wasn’t sure which one this belongs in. I’ve been following very closely, and picked up my i7/8gb/256 last week. I’m coming from an old XP laptop and have a few questions I was hoping someone could use their vast knowledge to enlighten me a little. I’m loving windows 8.1 so far, it’s new, refreshing, and plain fun to figure out. Sorry if I’m way behind/ignorant on some of this. So you know the context, I’m a grad student. Really appreciate someone taking the time to answer this.

    1) Like I said, I’m coming from an XP machine, what are the essential apps I need? Office? Security? Adobe? Help?
    2) Speaking of which, what is the different between an app and a program?
    3) Is there any work around to sync google with the calendar/email/people apps? I live in the google ecosystem, any way at all to connect it?
    4) In IE11, the text was normal at first. Then all of a sudden it became tiny, and there are huge borders. It almost looks like it’s fully zoomed out. Any idea how to fix this?
    5) Finally, chrome. Not a huge issue, but my tabs are squashed together to the left. Anyone know why?

Thanks guys! This has all been unbelievably useful. I’ll be here reading and following everything

    1) Essentials depend on you. Office is usually in there, security your preference, ms essentials is pretty good not overbearing or resource heavy like mcafee and Norton.
    2) Metro apps run in full screen mode, then theres desktop apps which run on the desktop just like on win7/xp. There isn't an app to replace all desktop programs (yet) but they tend to be much better on battery life (ie11 metro vs chrome or ie11 desktop)
    3) You can get gmail in the metro mail app, calendar I don't believe you can. Something about how google has stopped supporting sync with Microsoft account or something. It's dumb there might be a calendar app in the app store you can use.
    4) Try zooming back in? Use pinch gesture
    5) Chrome, go in chrome://flags set High DPI to enabled. That should take care of all DPI issues including touch incompatibility.

This is really a matter of preference, but a great resource for getting up and running on a new machine is Ninite, which packages many Windows application installers into a single installer. All of the applications they offer are solid, so its a good place to start.

"App" is really just a buzzword for an application that is packaged and distributed through a central repository with streamlined installation/configuration tools. I have not used Windows 8 yet myself, but I assume that a lot of the Windows 8 apps are just the standard version of a given application wrapped for easier Metro UI use.

I have a separate post - but will ask again here, anybody performed a clean Windows install? If so, did it affect anything like boot times, battery, etc. ?

Curious, has anyone tried the Yoga 2 "Slot-in Case" Yoga2 13" Slot-in Case | 888015541 | Lenovo | (US) ? I know there were mixed reviews on the one for the Yoga 13 (still have to read more what people were saying), but apparently one of the complaints was fit, was thinking maybe the one for the Yoga 2 works a bit better (assuming it is different at all and they didn't just post the same case on a different page with a new name :p).

Not sure just how useful it would be, but I was thinking it would be nice to have something for the keyboard surface to sit on when in that display configuration, and maybe to slide into in tablet mode if using it regularly as a tablet.. but maybe in the end it wouldn't see all that much use. Anyway, not sure if any have even been shipped yet -- guess I could try to be a guinea pig otherwise (though my Yoga 2 hasn't shipped yet).

I did but only used it a few hours before dumping it. I wanted to test something and partitioned my drive to do it. Everything was just as fast but make sure you install the drivers which can be found on the D:LENOVO drive.

I don't think you will see much difference in a clean install here. There is not really much bloatware and the Lenovo specific things they have can be uninstalled in a few minutes if needed.
I have used this now two full days at work all day, and spent last night in bed surfing all night, and I am trying hard to find a reason to return this machine......with no luck. Outside of the Yellow issue, I am not seeing anything glaring wrong.
Also decided to really stress it out today so I went full screen, 100% brightness, Bluetooth mouse on, using Office apps, web surfing, Lync running full time, Outlook running full time, and did several WebEx demonstrations which included videos. To me that is pretty hard on a battery. I made it 5 and a half hours before I stopped with 10 percent battery remaining. Personally, I don't think we will see much better than that on the current technology so I am happy.

Thanks everyone for sharing your impressions. Is anyone using a stylus in OneNote? I'm considering waiting for the Thinkpad, but I would jump on this if I could use a stylus for notes in class. I am not an artist, so I don't need pressure sensitivity as long as I can jot down a few formulas.

Also, what approximate framerates and resolutions are you getting for light gaming (DOTA, DIII, etc)?

    Thanks!

I just ordered the Musemee Notier V2 via Amazon about 15 minutes ago. Should be here Thursday so I'll post how it works. It is a much finer tip (like a ballpoint pen) than the standard stylus with the fat rubber end.

    Here's my gaming review!
This machine is held back by its graphics card, otherwise it would soar. Unfortunately, the graphics card is probably the most important piece of hardware in gaming, so you're not gaming on medium or high on this. Ever.
Minecraft: Very casual, no problems here. Was able to play this on medium settings fine, but it's not a graphically intense game. It worked well.
Crysis 2: VERY surprisingly, i was able to run this and play it on the lowest settings at a decent FPS rate which I was very happy with. The problem with it was that when I lowered the res to 1600x900 it didn't scale up to fullscreen at all. Any solutions out there? Driver updates?
Counterstrike source: Ran very well, old game, so it was easy.
Assassins Creed II: I was pretty disappointed in this one. Even at the lowest settings possible I still had some rare lag, but the FPS was always bad. I love this game, so this was a major grief for me.

One HUGE issue out there right now. If you're using the trackpad, you can'y use the keyboard and vice versa. This needs to be fixed/turned off. How? (Mice work fine)

Have you guys noticed the track pad collects oil stains really quickly? Ive had it for about 4 days and alreaedy a noticeable oil stain smudge at the cetner and the left click area. Not a huge deal but was wondering if it was caused by all my crazy amount of wiping down with a microfiber cloth and water.

Also anyone you call on gchat or google hangout complain of echo?

Otherwise loving this machine, especially the speakers. It was a welcome surprise when I turned on some music and realized the sound is on par with my 15inch laptop with a 2.1 system.

What would happen if I decide I wanted to drop the display resolution down to say 1920x1080 or something similar in Windows? Would everything appear grainy on the display?

the reason I need to re-install is I need hyper-v, only pro and enterprise supports it. I am not concerned with the bloat-ware and don't mind the stock image at all - quite the opposite, am concerned with the lack of driver support for the Y2P once I am facing a fresh install.

Now, how you like the keyboard? This really might be the reason I am done with this one. Message to everybody: try out the keyboard first if you're a serious typist ( typrX - typing races), coming from a thinkpad keyboards I am very much unimpressed with this one, in particular the right shift key is a big misunderstanding.

None. Windows 8.x ships with the latest version of Windows Defender, which rolls Microsoft Security Essentials into the same product. Your Y2P is good to go right out of the box, and will never bother you to renew your antivirus subscription.

Agree the keyboard sucks if you're coming from a business-oriented laptop. I'm just trying to forget what long travel and full-size keys feel like. Doesn't help docking to full keyboard at home. If the Haswell Carbon X3 was out this month I would have gotten that (assuming that keyboard is more business-oriented). I don't game or really use tablet mode that much I just need something travel friendly and can pound out some code in peace and this seems to be $300+ cheaper than current competition with similar specs.

Different keystrokes for different folks I guess! I actually prefer the Y2P keyboard over the AB9+ keyboard. It is smaller than my HP Pavilion 17" beast so it takes a little getting used to, but this one also doesn't weigh 9 lbs. I find I don't use the right shift at all but I love having the row of Home/End buttons as I was missing that on the AB9+ (had to hit Fn key to use those). I also like that I don't have to hit the Fn key for the top row of keys but I know others don't. These kinds of preferences are why there can never be 1 perfect computer that suits everyone.

im interested in an ultrabook, and am considering the yoga 2 (not sure about the integrated card though),
however I'm wondering about its use as a convertable.
right now I have a large notebook and an ipad with a keyboard.. i hate carrying the notebook because its 8 pounds..
but I'm wondering if a convertable ultrabook could replace both a notebook and the ipad/keyboard combo.

do you guys often use it in tablet mode?
should I just stick to a conventional ultrabook.. hmm

Hi everyone, I am still waiting for my Nov. 01 delivery so wanted to see if someone can help with a question. I am interested in finding out if the wake on LAN functionality exists on the Yoga 2. I am not even sure if it's possible wirelessly at all. Can someone please post a screenshot of the power management tab under wireless network adapter's properties on Yoga 2? With Microsoft's Remote Desktop app for ios, I am trying to figure out if I a Remote Desktop app can wake the Yoga 2 on a magic packet (or whatever) and will appreciate the help. Thanks.

Messed around with my i7 for a day now. Here are my first impressions.

The fans are variable speed and so far they don't seem too loud. I have yet to stress it hard but it gets a little warm in center bottom aft. Might be the fact it's i7 as maybe i5 wouldn't get as warm? Ok so far tho.

No more wifi issues. I upgraded the wifi driver and installed all the Windows 8.1 upgrades. Runs very nice and fast.

The yellow issue is kinda weird but acceptable so far. Need to view my pics and vids to really understand if it's a deal killer but not ATM.

The screen resolution and glossy version makes using this a really great experience. Hard to put it down.

The touch screen with the keyboard is also a phenomenal experience with Win 8.1. So fast and intuitive.

I like the flexibility of using all the different modes. Tablet modes are great but using keyboard with touch is a whole knew world of efficiency and productivity.

Keyboard is excellent. I can see how purists might not like it but you get used to it. I don't mistype letters. Love the backlit part too.

The bleeding at the bottom of the screen looks like it's from uneven pressure placed around the screen's edge. Like when you press on some screens. Totally a non issue when in use. Only noticeable on boot up.

    Speakers are excellent.

I believe someone cracked it open and it is a single mSata, so to upgrade the mSata drive you would have to remove the existing and replace with a larger size.

Hey everyone, I have not received my Y2P yet(ordered the I7/8gb/256 model today) but I am wondering if anyone can confirm whether or not the battery is user replaceable like it is on the AB9 plus? Sorry if it is a silly question, but I am concerned about making this thing last as long as possible. I have an Amazon pre order for the AB9 plus in the same configuration, and this order for the Y2P and if the battery is replaceable then I would definitely prefer to go with the Lenovo for cost reasons($445 cheaper than even my pre ordered Sammy). I would appreciate an insights that owners of the machine may have, and thanks for all the info that has already been shared in this forum

Has any other owner been able to disable " password required upon waking"? I've disabled this in every location I know of, and it STILL keeps asking me for my password every time I turn the screen back on. It's minor, but rather annoying.

I am sure it is replaceable in the same way that it is in Samsung, crack it open if you have the ability to do that, figure out how to disconnect and remove it, order a new one from Lenovo if they will sell you one and then install it.

I forgot I had this...this will show you everything you need to know.

I don't think there is anyway around it if you are using a MS account. If not, try this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have previously seen this article and I did try this, but that checkbox does not appear in my User Accounts dialogue. Hence my frustration. In that case, is there a procedure to disable my MS account, and put in a new user account so that I can disable that feature? What benefits would I be giving up by doing this?

Please pardon my naivete on the topic. I'm coming over from the last 8 years on Mac and haven't kept up with the inner workings of Windows.

If I restart, I have to reenter the password, but I was able to stop it requesting it when awaking from sleep/screensaver:
Here is what worked for me:

open Windows Charms menu (swipe in from right side of screen)
    Select Change PC Settings
    Click on Accounts
    Click on Sign In Options
Under Password Policy, click Change so it now reads " Password is not required..."
Make sure you do not have a PIN enabled or Account Picture (I don't know if these make a difference, but I would think they would).

Back on the Desktop, right click and select Personalize.
    Select Screen Saver
Make sure "On resume, display logon screen" is UNCHECKED

There are certain Microsoft services (such as SkyDrive) that require that you use a password to login so no amount of unchecking boxes will remove that option if you use those services.

Based from one post of one guy in this forum. His AB9+ had 30 mins more battery life than his Y2Pro. Yes he has both. rich kid. Y2Pro= 6 hours, AB9+= 6.5 hours

Note: Setting the res at 1080p yields an additional 2~hours based from another post in this forum.

Ok, it was one GAL :hi2: and no not rich kid but lucky enough to be able to purchase and test both and just sold the AB9+ to another forum user. Wish I was rich and a kid!!! Pretty close on the hours, it was Y2P = 6 hours 40 minutes and AB9+ 7 hours 8 minutes. So just a difference of 28 minutes. This was with wifi, multiple chrome tabs, youtube, several documents, outlook and at 50% brightness (not using high performance mode).

I'm currently testing battery life while in Cinema mode (Energy Mode setting), no wifi and all other programs closed to see what I'd get if on a plane. I'll report back later once it dies.

Adding factors: Running in tent mode, 1920 x 1080 and movie is on desktop in case it makes any difference to anyone.

Sure..just go into accounts and disconnect it. The first time you go into the store or the mail app after that you will have to manually login once and then you will be fine.
