And the Alienware M15x is the second...
-
Thanks for the R Series link. Funny thing, they list the weight but not the dimensions. But it appears that the R Series has the off-centered screen, unlike the SL Series.
-
no HDMI port for all T/R series
only DVI?
-
The 15.4" models have the new DisplayPort.
-
Yes, I know, but no TV use displayport yet, and it may cause HDCP problem
-
Does the T400 have DVI?
-
Right, how could I forget about that one ... but then there are things best forgotten
-
No ThinkPad has a DVI port. T400 has only VGA.
And DVI is generally replaced by its successors - HDMI and DisplayPort.
To sum it up:
R500/T500/W500 - DisplayPort
R400/T400 - VGA only
SL300/400/500 - HDMI -
That's what I thought. I'll have the advanced mini dock anyways, so it's not a big deal.
-
is there DisplayPort <-> HDMI adapter?
-
From Wikipedia:
"The video signal is not compatible with DVI or HDMI, but a DisplayPort connector can pass these signals through."
"Dual-mode DisplayPort is capable of backward compatibility with single link DVI/HDMI; dual link DVI/HDMI and analog VGA require active converter adapters or dongles." -
It doesn't look like that T400 has Dual mode DP
-
What is this whitish dot between a ThinkLight LED and a camera in the new ThinkPads? See e.g. http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/img_lib/productphotos/W500.jpg
Is it (my beloved!) Ambient Light Sensor known from HP/Apple laptops?
Pro: It improves battery life.
Con: There is no word about it in folders...
-
It's probably a LED to let you know when the webcam is on.
-
It makes so much sense that you have just made me loosing the last hope...:confused2::wink:
-
No Ambient Light Sensors, sorry to disappoint.
Andrew mentioned that in the review of the X200 which has the same dot there. -
That dot with light up when you use the camera. I've seen it on a R61 at work.
-
Right. If it had been W500 review I would have read it more carefully. (I simply am looking for the reason not to buy W500 just after it touches the shelves :wink
Red light discrete... -
OK, looks like the FireGL V5700 is not gonna be more powerful than the Quadro FX 570m much....
*sigh* -
Well, you can always buy an HP, an EliteBook as they call it now... and it will have Ambient Light... that's a very good reason. <strike>Nope, I lied</strike>
And you can stop whining and get a Clevo...
-
Meh, those are crap. I was just expecting more out of the W500, considering it's more expensive than the T500.
-
I'm typing this reply on the one of them
HP has changed a keyboard layout recently - from the ThinkPad-like to the Toshiba-like - for unknown reason... And it looks like Lenovo drifts towards a similar land (cf. SL's layout).
-
I don't like the new layout, the HP 8510p/w has the same layout as their Pavilions and the keyboard isn't as good as this on the previous nc8430. However, I'm curious to see how the new version with the aluminum casing will look like in person...
As for Lenovo, I took their survey, so hopefully they won't screw up the keyboard too.
http://lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=218 -
So did I!
I simply think some people just cannot withstand not to change anything... -
Btw, SL's layout is nothing new, those are the same keyboards from the Lenovo 3000 series, and the whole SL series looks like a dressed up version of this not so successful budget line, so that has nothing to do with ThinkPads so far.
-
If Lenovo ever screws up the Thinkpad keyboard, man that'll be the end of it.
-
Lenovo won't change the keyboard to worst, they can only improve and make it better
-
no other NB manufacture use Displayport yet, Lenovo is first one.
looks like it's a useless feature in next 1 year.
-
thats why ideapads are the only ones to consider if u need hdmi
-
The new Dell E Series will also use DisplayPort. HP will also support it in the future, So you could say that Lenovo is being very innovative on this one.
-
Maybe you should do some research about it before making the judgment?
Also, it's quite useful for people who know how to use it.
-
i didn't do research and to me personally I don't need DisplayPort but I do see more benefit in HDMI which is more common, by the time DisplayPort picks up that notebook will be outdated anyway...
-
Agree! +1
-
You can always use a Displayport to HDMI cable and vice versa. HDMI is more popular is just because it came out first, nothing else.
-
Yeah, I saw that adapters are available

Right, but this is ThinkPad, the first ThinkPad, with a "faux pas" keyboard
Looks like a Trojan horse...!
Exactly, I can't find HP decision motivation other than unification. Maybe for a bunch of users of Pavilons this is the factor that the business series keyboard looks similarly?
I hope you are right, however, remember the aforementioned pool about the keyboard layout at lenovoblogs.com... It hasn't appeared for no reason, has it? -
Looks like theres a new post on Lenovo blogs about the SL series:
http://lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=220 -
I've found no eSATA port(s) in any of the new ThinkPads - is it a serious shortcoming (if any)?
-
I've wondered about that too - such a thing would be quite handy (more handy than wireless protocols hardly anyone can access yet, imho) - especially on the X300 with the limited SSD storage capacity.

I agree. I agree. -
There is an associated topic: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3638614.
The good news is one can eventually hire the ExpressCard slot
The bad one is that the "new-old" ThinkPad Advanced Mini-Dock 250410U doesn't have eSATA either. -
ok, rumor says the W500 won't have the switchable GPU.....
Another disappointment. -
Any source? Even in a messy Lenovo's recent announcements it looks like W500 will have both cards onboard:
W500 datasheet:
"Li-ion Battery Life
6-cell, integrated/discrete graphics: up to
5.5hr/3.8hr
9-cell, integrated/discrete graphics: up to
8.3hr/5.9hr"
T400 & T500 datasheet:
"Li-ion Battery Life
6-cell: starting at 4.3 hrs
9-cell: starting at 6.4 hrs
9-cell + bay battery: starting at 8.5 hrs"
Otherwise there is not too much reasons not to buy T61p other than longer battery life of W500... -
It could be a mistake, because that's the only point where there is an hint about switchable GPU on the W500, while for the T400 and T500 it is stated clearly.
All in all I think the W500 is a fine machine, and it's not that the graphic card is really bad either. But I do not expect a significant leap in overall performance over the T61, and it is a bit of a shame for a brand new product like this. -
Nothing is really clear until now, I guess we just have to wait and see.
-
Yes, because T61p is still a good laptop overall...
I think that such inaccurate specifications are elements of a viral marketing... -
It's getting clear (not that it wasn't before)...
Preview about the W500: http://translate.google.com/transla...o-2-naplno?page=0,0&hl=cs&ie=UTF8&sl=cs&tl=en
Still, it's not crystal clear.
-
But what if it's lost in translation?
-
Try again, I'm sure you will find the "way".
-
Where is my usb port on the right side?
stay tuned for some lenovo announcements coming soon...
