You might not want to install with the hard drive set to compatibility mode, though. You'd have to go to the trouble to enable AHCI after install and it's kind of a pain. I didn't experience any trouble installing from a USB drive. You might be able to change the way USB drives are handled in the BIOS, but I'm not sure.

Yup, I tried all the boot order options for USB (FDD, HDD, CD). I tried an Ubuntu USB flash drive installer and the X120e recognizes the drive.

Looks like I may have to just use and burn Win7 to a DVD.

Hi! I have the X120E. I just noticed a crack (see picture) on the case near the hinge on the top of the laptop. How difficult would it be too replace the case? Are parts available for the case?
    Thanks!

You'll need to replace the LCD rear cover part (FRU# 60Y5264), as described in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (PDF).

This part can be bought online, if you Google the FRU number. SparePartsWarehouse has it for $55.

Sure! Also make sure you check to see if there's visible damage to any other part of the laptop in that area, ie the hinges, LCD components, etc.

Will do.I have the back cover on order. It looks like the replacement process pretty much involves removing a majority of the components before the back cover is removeable. Unless I am missing something? Which I am prone to do ;)

Yup, went that route and went through it manually also (without the tool), both still came out with the Disk Read Error...

Now I tried with an external DVD, and it hangs on the Thinkpad start screen...

I already moved the USB HDD and USB CD up the order in the BIOS > Startup but still no dice...

hey guys I am interested in buying one of these.
This is what I have configured on the EPP website:
    ThinkPad X120e - 1 Yr Depot Warranty
    AMD Fusion Processor E-350 (1.6Ghz, 1MB L2, 1.0GHz FSB) 2.0GT/s1
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)12
    11.6" HD AntiGlare - Midnight Black (w/WWAN)
    AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics, AMD Fusion Processor E-350 (1.6Ghz, 1MB L2, 1.0GHz FSB) 2.0GT/s
    2 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 (1 DIMM)8
    UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
    250GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm4
6 Cell Battery (5.0 hours); weight starting at 1.50kg60
    ThinkPad 1x1 b/g/n10
    (no mobile broadband module)65

    Subtotal: $759.00
    Sale Price: $489.00
    [eCoupon] -$73.35
    Estimated total: $415.65*
    Savings $343.35

    Is 415.65 + taxes a fair price?
How is the battery life? I am hoping to get at least 5-6 hours during my lectures (word and firefox open).
Also I don't want a laptop that will feel warm or hot to the touch. Is the x120e good at dissipating the heat in a way that myself and people sitting beside me won't feel the laptop heat? And I don't want it to make a lot of noise!
Should I upgrade to the Thinkpad 2x2 wireless card? I want to make sure I have a wireless signal everywhere I go!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A USB flash drive worked for me, since that's how I installed win 7. You might try changing the UEFI boot to legacy only and see if that helps?

To the touch mine doesn't get very hot. The little fan gets going but even at full tilt it's not that loud. Of course, my Cad laptop gets really hot so perhaps it's a lack of perception on my part.

Not possible, because the two have different motherboards (the APU is soldered on).

You could set up something with AutoHotKey and say, this tool, but it'll be more complicated than PM. I highly suggest you install PM and the power management driver, as you will be missing many features (ie: battery thresholds, some hotkeys, automatic power plan adjustment when on AC/battery, etc.) if you do not.

I think he's wondering if the extra core is unlockable, like previous generations of AMD tri-core CPUs. They were a four-core design with one core disabled, and in some cases the fourth core could be re-enabled.

Ah, I definitely misunderstood then. That answer is still most likely "no" on the X120e, as Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) has to be BIOS and motherboard-supported to try core unlocking. This is a good article to take a look at.

Thanks for the help. I attached a picture of the new case part.Quite a bit of messing around, but I got it back together and it fired up. Unfortunately it still seems to be having problems with a couple of keys on the keyboard. After the crack occurred ( I am not sure when and how it happened) their were some intermittent key problems, but I was hoping that by re seating all the connectors during the repair it might start working. Not the case. I suppose replacing the keyboard is next? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
PS I may have noticed that putting pressure on the hinge near the crack would fix the not functioning key problem for periods of time. This was before I replaced the back of the LCD. That is why I was hoping it was a connection related issue.

Looks good, that keyboard issue definitely sounds like a connection issue, so it wouldn't surprise me that making sure it's plugged in really tight would fix it. Glad it's all working for you! :)

I have one last issue. It seems the audio doesn't work after I turn the unit off for a period of time. No audio on anything. The problem is solved by a reboot. It works flawlessly for hours after the restart. So it seems to be something after sitting or being off. I tried updating the Conexant Driver, with a version from Lenovo's website, but the laptop crashes everytime I try. It is version 8. something. There is a warning about the folder already exists during the attempt to update as well. I also tried setting a recovery point of a month ago as a test and that didnt help. Thanks for any direction you can give me!

New 8.32... Conexant driver causes a crash dump and then no audio.

Older 4.12.... Conexant driver works well so re-installed and sticking with the older version.

The Lenovo Community forums had a couple of other x120e owners noting the problem with crashing while trying to update the Conexant driver to 8.32. Looks like it should be avoided for now. As mentioned the 4.12 seems fine after loading a new copy.
Thanks again for the help! This is a great forum

Very pleased to receive my x120e here in Dunedin, NZ, just under two weeks from placing the order and having it shipped via myus.com. Now which is the best move with my new replacement hard disk - putting the default Lenovo restore on it, with all their apps, or just using a clean install of W7 and then installing Lenovo specific drivers as needed?

Windows 8 Developer Build 8102 seems to work fine on my x120e. A couple drivers fail to install, but during the Windows Update it automatically detects compatible updates and does the update during that process.

Yes it has bluetooth. *Might have to turn it on as it was not enabled when I received mine*

Curious why purchased from Amazon when the lowest price there is $465 and Able's Maine has same unit for $437 no tax free shipping? Difference would have purchased 8 gig of memory upgrade.

CTO models are custom configurations. The model number for your machine is a pre-configured machine. Check http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf for the exact configuration of the latter.

I started my x120e earlier after being off most of the day. After signing in, the screen kept a message on "searching for desktop" for quite some time and then a warning came up. "Could not find desktop check drive or disk". Something like that anyway. A small part of the desktop showed up. No icons were seen or even the usual back ground. I rebooted and the desktop came back without issue. Any insight into this problem? Thanks

my x120e is on the way to my house, who knows i may be happy with the preload as you do. need to learn how to clean install. thanks for the useful links and reply.

are the download links(with x86) for windows 7 64 bit?
and before clean install, how do we remove the hidden recovery partition? and then during windows installation, we need to choose custom install which will wipe out all the data on Harddisk?

    thanks

1.- Press the power button; it's the same as turning the computer on from power off. Resuming from standby, you can press either the power button or Fn key.

2.- Press and hold the power button until it shuts off. If you need to do a full hardware reset, remove the battery and unplug, and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Otherwise, just wait 10 seconds, turn it back on.
