It involves a bucket of water and a neighbour...
Then you can use every sig you want.

Which distro are you running on that Precision? I've got Slackware on this one, but having issues ATM switching kernels.

EDIT: sorry, got my m's and e's mixed up....Ubuntu, all of them, run flawlessly on the new DELLS.

My laptop is actually a Latitude. I'm pretty sure the M6400 is the Precision, but anyways... I am now running the freshly released: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Everything runs great... The boot performance with ext4 and my SSD is just awesome. After a few tweaks I am drawing only 8.9W with wifi on doing some basic surfing. This is getting me ~6 hours out of my 6 cell battery.

Yesterday at my university, some people were discussing about how slow their [windows] computers are.

I got in the discussion and told them to do the standard windows cleaning stuff. They told me they had already done it all.

As I am always prepared, I pulled out a Kubuntu Live CD (from the ones at kubuntu.org) for each and everybody was happy in the end :D
    Even me :)

    [/diary]

So, do people here spread live cds to people who "need" it too?

I occasionally when fixing a computer, stick in a live CD to see what the problem is. Whenever I do I find it increasingly difficult to explain the fact that it is an operation system and unrelated to Windows.

LOL that sounds like my work - we play around with very high tech helicopters all day, but if their computer/laptop at home begins to have issues they turn into a blubbering mess and get me to have a look at it!

Don't know if I asked previously, but can I join? :D

Been using Ubuntu since Warty came out, dabbled in openSUSE, involved with the Ubuntu Gamers Arena, still attempting to get a database together for gaming PC hardware that just works with *nix...and general *nix fangirl :D

so can I? can I? huh? huh?

    lol

That's what I should do... try Arch in a VM.

Oh, and I suppose I should perform "the ritual," which I haven't, since it was instituted after I joined. But I'll have to wait until tomorrow for broad daylight and neighbors. :p

I tried 9.10 too, but thought it's boot screen was a bit uglier, I wanted to be able to change the login screen, my SD card reader didn't work, and 'Hibernate' would crash the system. No bueno.

I've found Jaunty to be really good though, but now that I've tried KDE, next on my list is to try Arch. :D

I can understand being an Arch Fanattic after getting hooked on Slackware for similar reasons....however, for the 'convenience' minded, I'm finding Fedora 12 x64 to be rock solid. It a little harder to install codecs etc but not that big of deal but I end up with basically the same desktop as 9.10 but something that feels a little more stable.....fwiw for those hopping around...worth a looksie... :D

Eh, I waited until a couple people showed up in the parking lot, but they hardly gave more than an inquisitive glance at me. I would have preferred a bit more reaction, that's for sure. Maybe if it was really cold and snowing...

Just started using Linux in the past few weeks. I tried Live Cds of Ubuntu 10.04, Mint 9, Simply MEPIS, openSUSE 11.2 and 11.3, Peppermint, and PCLinuxOS KDE & Gnome.

I was unable to get the Ubuntu 10.04-based distros or openSUSE 11.3 to work on my old desktop (Athlon XP and ATi 9600XT). So, after playing with PCLOS and MEPIS, I found that I preferred PCLOS (KDE) and installed it on the desktop last week. No significant problems.

Because my experience has been generally positive, last night I installed PCLOS on my HP dv7t (dual boot with W7).

Having fun exploring a new OS. :)
