Got gentoo installed on my system.Did a stage3 install, compiled my own kernel, kde etc. It took about three days to completely setup my box, kde taking more than 12 hours to compile .Though it took a long time to compile its worth it. I feel my system is more stable and responsive thanmy arch and so right now im stickin with gentoo. Here are two screenshots.

Did you install a split ebuild? I installed the most basic split ebuild, kdebase-startkde, and it only took a few hours on the laptop in my siggy. If you installed the most inclusive split ebuild or used the monolithic ebuild, it might've taken a long time though. The only annoying thing about using kdebase-startkde was that it really had nothing other than KDE, not even Konsole or Kscreensaver. But I think I prefer this method to Kubuntu, where the first thing I do is uninstall unnecessary packages.

thats pretty sexy... would you mind posting your conkyrc? (unless thats not conky...)

if i werent going with a minimalist install on my gentoo i would have to try out kde as ive been a gnome guy since day one... also where'd you get that menu? does kde just let you configure it (like fluxbox and such)?

Might as well go buy a mac there...oh wait, you can't afford one? Hahha, I kid, I kid.

I just don't get the point of trying to mimic another OS' UI if its not going to function the same. Plus its just not the same...you'd might as well go get the real thing.

Here we go, I finally got things setup to my liking on my X61s. I really wanted to go with a keyboard driven WM, but... I miss a sanely licensed Ion3.

That's Rezlooks Graphite for gtk2 and LineArt for Xfce.

After reading reviews, I'd wait a generation for them to fix the keyboard, or look into an X200 which appears to have less of the flexing issues from the thinner, perforated backplate. Either that or take a look at the Latitude E series.

The keyboard flex issues are overblown. I asked about this in the Lenovo forum, and people with T400/500s said you have to push pretty hard on the keys to tell that there's more flex than before.

The X200 is a completely different machine, and has a completely different purpose. I wouldn't buy it just for the keyboard.

    Umm, the Latitudes are Dells...

Maybe, I can't say for certain since I don't have one.

Yeah, but then, we don't know what direction he wants to go, either, and many times a T just doesn't offer someone a whole lot more than an X. Especially now that they have a full size keyboard, and the T no longer offers a Flexview option. The point of that comment was to let him know that while the X200 does have the same keyboard, it doesn't flex as much in case he does want something smaller this time around.

Thanks for clearing that up. The Latitudes are pretty close in quality to a Thinkpad, and not as ugly as they used to be.
