It's installed on my thinkpad x230, the 8 gb of ram is because ram is so cheap, and for running virtual machines.

Yeah one of the great things about crunchbang is how lightweight it is and I prefer simply using openbox than a DE.

    The picture is from InterfaceLift.

There's a very funny story behind that name. Some day, if you're good, I'll tell you.

Got my old Vostro 1400 running again with a $60 parts laptop that included 3 OEM adapters and 2 batteries (one 9-cell :D)! The exterior of my laptop looks so much better now, without the cracks and scratches. Even the keyboard looks pristine. Pretty much the only thing I kept from the old laptop was the guts (mobo, cpu, hd, ram, etc.)

It's on its fourth screen, third mobo and adapter, and second HD, chassis, and keyboard. But it's still quieter, snappier, and stronger than the new Vostro 3555. :p

The only real downside is the replacement screen is kinda dim, just from old age I guess. Runs an external monitor fine, though (better than the 3555 with the lame AMD chip).

Anyways, it's awesome to have the beast back! Here's a screenshot (Xubuntu 12.04, fullscreen transparent terminal ):

Ubuntu on the Lenovo X230. Highly recommended as a linux laptop. I'm seeing 12hrs of battery during normal use, plus Ubuntu absolutely FLIES on this machine. It feels incredibly responsive and looks great.

And I like to try different DEs, right now I'm trying MATE, which is a fork of GNOME 2 and I'm really liking it! I think I'll remove KDE at some point and keep only MATE, which is the session I'm using always anyway.

Just started getting back into Linux a few months ago, since my C class required us to have code that's compilable by GCC (before, I used Dev-C++, which uses it's own compiler). Ended up loving to code via gEdit/terminal/GCC/Linux, and I installed Debian Squeeze in a virtual machine onto of Windows 7. Last time I tried Linux was back when Ubuntu 9.04 was released, though I never saw a reason to keep using it. Did mess around with Compiz and whatnot, and it was cool, but it made more sense in most cases to use Windows at the time.

Anyway, my current desktop is pretty plain. Just a stock Debian install with GNOME (considered Ubuntu again, but I *hate* how Unity looks/works). Background is from Ace Comabt 6.

Go Tigers!! I just graduated last semester.

Anyways try using Code::Blocks It's great for writing C code. It has more options then gedit. I always found Code Block easier to debug with because the debugger was GUI. I could see the variables values as they changed instead of having to type a command each time I wanted to check one.

So, I got over my hate of Unity after using it this weekend, since Debian didn't work out of the box for the X61t and Ubuntu 12.10 did (too lazy to do that much configuration right now). Tweaked some things for it, but I left this desktop mostly stock.

The Debian virtual machine on my W520 is still the same as it was, however.

Here's a screen scrape of one of my Linux desktops, back around May of 2011, when I was rocking Linux Mint 8 with Compiz, on a Compaq CQ62-225NR 15.6" laptop, w/AMD N620 Phenom II X2 2.8 GHz, 8 GB DDR3-1333, ATI Radeon 4250, and a 7200 RPM Hitachi SATA2 320 GB SATAII spinner.

Damn right. Running Debian Wheezy on my old PIII :)

My dilemma is that i want to use this box as a 24/7 cloud storage, but it is SO loud under load, and since it is somewhat near my room the high pitched noise from the Fan and HDD prevent me from sleeping.

I'm thinking of repurposing my Dell 1525 to the task (2.0ghz Celeron, 4GB RAM, Wireless-G) but this thing runs blazingly hot, not sure how well it can keep a good uptime.

Basically, i'm trying to ditch Dropbox, why does every friggin company likes to peek at our data?

I still use Dropbox, though only for school work that I basically don't care about (privacy-wise). Now, for stuff I *do* care about, I usually stick to flash drive, or if I don't have one on hand, Truecrypt-encrypted folder in Dropbox or email.

Anyway, you could consider buying replacement fans for your server box. That might make it quieter. Not sure I'd recommend using a stupid-hot computer for a server task though; if that's your only choice for replacing the PIII, I'd consider either repasting with a good paste and upping the cooling system on it (if possible), or simply just grabbing a super-cheap desktop with something like an Atom or the like.

Flash drives? I break them, lose them, and most of the time their flash memory just fails. 4 years of high school i prolly went through like 20 USB sticks.

I'm already storing my sensitives on TC containers in Dropbox (AES-Twofish-Serpent, take that NSA!) however i would still like to personally have a little more control over it. Plus building a cloud is a nice project.

Nope. It's an old proprietary Dell case, and this thing is too old to be worth upgrading. I'm just thinking of underclocking/undervolting the 1525 instead. Core 2 Duo based Celeron is much better than a PIII. Plus, since it's a laptop i can physically access the console if things go wrong.

Heres what the PIII looks like (ignore the monitor, i didn't take this picture)

That's what I did. I bought a used netbook - dell mini 10v (1st gen atom, fanless) off of craigslist and installed crunchbang. I added a few services I wanted along with SSH. I also found a command to turn off the LCD and backlight via ssh. Originally I thought of getting a RaspberryPi, but the atom has a lot more muscle and only uses around 4 watts power.
