Yes, it's a pretty potent combo....no prob to boot to vista for a quick 3 hour game session, right?![]()
@dmacfour: same here, upgraded to final a few days ago...what was it, like 78 files total?
-
I'm running RC still, lawl. The more I use it, the more I feel like it's enough for me, lol. Who needs windows
.
-
-
I don't know then.
Also, just finished downloading Hardy via Torrent, I'll try it tonight/tomorrow. -
My apologies, I didn't mean to give the server edition. I will change it and also add the Live CD versions.
Also, reason why I put alternate is that I found that a lot of my friend's computers could not run the live cd for some reason so I've always been giving them the alternate cd's. I'll add the live cd versions as well.
@sathyaterry: Hopefully, you did not mind downloading the alternate cd.... -
-
That sucks, pixel
Download the alternative CD via torrent, burn it and you can upgrade from inside ubuntu using that(instructions at the ubuntu website). -
I think I'll have to do that, Thomas. Excuse me while I boot into Windows for a couple of days (it'll probably take that long to download it on our 256kb/s
).
The reason I'll use Windows for that is Free Download Manager gets me a better speed (it opens up about four connections, and I get around 30Kb/s download speed that way). -
Get it via torrent, utorrent is best or Transmission/deluge in Ubuntu.
-
The alternate CD? Where's the torrent for that?
-
Here you go. It downloads pretty fast.
-
Oh. That's the link I'm downloading, but just with Free Download Manager. I'm getting up to 32 KB/s.
I guess I'll try booting back into Ubuntu and downloading it with torrent software... -
Hmmm. Thanks both of you, but I was getting twice this speed in Windows with Free Download Manager...I can resume at 13.5MB in Windows, so I think I'll go do that.
-
My Bad, wrong link
-
Oh, woot. Almost 10%.
-
-
So will this alternate CD work as normal LiveCD as well as for special installations, or will I want to download the actual LiveCD at some point if I want the 8.04 LiveCD?
-
I know, KDE 4 might as well be Beta.
As for you pixel, I've downloaded the Ubuntu Live and alternative CDs along with Kubuntu and Xubuntu and there all done( I started an hour and a half ago.
EDIT: The Alternative CD is text based, while the Live CD has a GUI. -
This last evening, I've upgraded to 8.04, then to KDE4. KDE4 is poor, it really is. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but personally I'm going to suggest everyone waits for KDE4.1 before making any judgements on it.
It's gorgeous diarrhoea, to be frank. Would probably be very usable with a little time and patience, but I'd have strong doubts over it's stability regardless of time invested by end-users.
KDE3 is now very mature and far more useful. By all means, grab the KDE4 live CDs and play around, but I'd not commit it to a production machine(even regularly-used desktops). -
What connection speed do you have, Thomas? I'm so jealous.
I'm almost 20% done now...
-
3 MBp/s but it's not always like that, I'm at my grandparents. At home it's like 1MBp/s down and 19KBp/s up
And it doesn't work with linux. I blame that stupid Quicklink mobile software that Alltel makes me use(I connect via cell phone). It works in Wine, but the driver to recognize my phone doesn't
Also, want some download links? I'm posting an article listing some of them for each distro. So far I have Linux Mint and Ubuntu, about to post it. -
Ok, here's the update.
I decide to download the LiveCD instead of the alternate CD, and use it to install 8.04. It's not like I have any settings or files to lose.
I'll just have to get GRUB fixed up.
Anyways, I download and install uTorrent, and start it working. It gets ~30KB/s, just like FDM. Unlike FDM, however, it clogs my connection so I can't even access Google.
So I uninstalled it, and am now using FDM to get the LiveCD. -
Good luck!
Well, Good luck in a few days!:
-
Downloaded and installed Hardy Heron!
Now what? -
Now tweak that sucker!
-
Allright I have a question..
My cpu fan seems to be spinning all the time and noise is pretty disturbing as i havent heard this noise from using windows vista.
Is this unusual? -
Just a minute, and I'll dig up a thread I started that may somewhat answer your question...
Here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=233200 -
Wow, now i completely take out everything i have said.
My Kubuntu 8.04 is running KDE4 compiz wobblily full powerAnd this comes from an ATI user, with very easy setup and no Envy so far. (actually i just took too long to figure out that there was 'ccsm').
-
oh noes!!!
im not at home and i don't have cds
so i cant install
-
Hey! I got it downloaded overnight, so now I'm burning the CD!
-
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromLinux
(NB: I do not know whether the version of the method which relies on the desktop (i.e. live cd) ISO works or not. I do know the two procedures for the alternate CD work because I'm the one who documented them on that page.)
I'm sure there's a way to do it from a Windows partition too. If you google around you should be able to find something. Ditto for installing from a USB stick. The only thing I would say is that these methods a) require you to know what you are doing and b) you should have a backup just in case. -
-
Alright, I've got it installed....I hope I did it right.
I chose to install it on my Ubuntu partition which I chose to format as "ext3 journaling file system." What does that mean? It was the only ext3 option I saw.
Well, it seems to be working OK. I set the mount point as "\" which I think is what it was on my last install, and everything looks normal.
Now I just have to get Compiz and my wireless working.
Btw, I noticed that Hardy doesn't auto-mount my drives, because it wants me to give the administrative password before it can mount a drive.
Anyways, I think it looks OK overall. If not, it's back to Gutsy for a while. -
Code:sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
Code:sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
-
(I am sparing you the academic discussion of whether an "ext3" filesystem with journaling turned off is still really an ext3 filesystem or an ext2 filesystem.)
-
Well, after some weird permissions stuff with mounting and whatnot (I think that must be a one-time thing), now my OS partition mounts as soon as I click on it, but drives still don't mount by default, which I actually like.
Furthermore, Hardy seems to distinguish between OS drives and utility drives, so it doesn't mount my Dell Utility drive, which is nice.
Ok, after making sure that the repos were enabled, and clicking on wireless, and trying to install media codecs and ccsm, I checked the Hardware Drivers (formerly known as Restricted Drivers) and the wireless driver was there, which it hadn't been before (twilight zone music).
Anyways, I tried to install it, and it installed or launched fw cutter, so now I'm posting from wireless!
Next up: trying to get media and compiz working...
When I tried to install some stuff, I got bogus errors about i386 compatibility, so I don't know what that was all about, but the nVidia driver doesn't seem to want to install (I'll post a screenie of the error message sometime).
Good news! Sound worked out of the box, unlike Gutsy! I haven't tested the headphones though... -
I can help you with Compiz and media codecs, or have you solved them?
-
I'm installing the two GStreamer plugins (extra plugins and ffmpeg video plugin) from Add/Remove Programs. We'll see if that doesn't work.
And then I'll get on the nVidia problem... -
Use Envy for that
-
Alright, if the restricted nVidia driver refuse to cooperate, I'll check it out.
Edit: Well, I'm not getting an error message now; it's downloading some package files, so this may work. -
One of the things that i noticed was the boot times which was awesome! It was nothing compared to my vista which takes almost a min to boot!
I've downloaded the codecs , media players(amarok) , and tuxtype!
Now, it's time to tweak the desktop! -
Glad to hear it
-
Allright now i have a question,
As Thomas stated,
"sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager" is the command used from command line(terminal) to get compiz, but wouldn't it be easier to get it from Add/Remove Programs?
Also , can't you download it from the website(like on windows dl a .exe and run it)
And lastly how do you know which command to run on terminal to download the select program and how does terminal know how to get it?
- Sathya (linux noob) -
Well, you know what your getting, and it's faster.
To install a program:
sudo apt-get install <program>
To Remove:
sudo apt-get remove <program>
The terminal checks the repositories and finds and downloads the program and all dependencies. -
Tweaked Compiz finally!
Now to twaeking the eye candy.. ! -
You can find my settings(if you want) in my Ubuntu guide.
-
Yeah i tried but it aint working..
Settings manager->Preferences->Profile&Background->Import
Right??
It doesnt work.. It doesnt even identify your file.. I tried selecting the "All files" But even then it didnt work..
EDIT : Got it working! But I dont see any difference! -
You won't, hit Ctrl + Alt + move the mouse.
-
Awesome!!!
Btw how can i access my music files stored in the windows partition? -
If you shut down your windows properly it should appear in "Places" as xxGB Media, just click on that to access you vista partition.
