It turns out that I only end up on these forums whenever my laptop dies on me, well coz the rest of the time is spent gaming.
Well, I believe you guys already know my case, but Still :
First Time : Laptop dies on me, pixelation.
RMA'ed, gt it fixed.(Or So I thought, they had just reinstalled windows, no hardware changes)
Second Time : Laptop dies on me again, same pixelation, then stops POSTing.
AutomatickJack and others say its a bad card, like they said the first time, I dont agree.
RMA'ed, they say gfx card is bad, then they say mobo is bad. They fix it but never tell me what they replaced. This RMA took 64 days!!!
Third Time : Now.Already RMA'ed. It is out of warranty, they say the mobo is gone bad. How the **** does it happen again in 7 months time??? What did they do the last time?
I personally have come to the conclusion that my product was defective from the beginning.

Now, Since replacing a mobo is damn expensive and the fact that they(MSI) fixed the exact same problem 7 months ago and the fact that I believe it to be a defective unit(Lemon Laws, etc), I want to know whether anything can be done about my notebook or is just a $2000 brick now??

Also I wanted to know whether there are any cases of MSI replacing such products with a newer model if the customer is willing to pay the differential??

I thought RMA was more the return and replacement of a product not a fix, thats what warrenty was for?

And it seems like a 2000 pound brick, mines starting to feel like its getting to that stage, after all this time the old girls starting to feel unstable.

    Keyboard stopped working (My fault)

Is the laptop in your posession?

Well, here MSi does nt run its own after-sales support rather it is outsourced to some other company, so RMA/Warranty-the same thing.
And No, the notebook is still with them, they have yet to give me a price estimate for mobo replacement and or repairs.
So, you mean MSi doesnt give a **** abt its customers? And If that is the case, then they definately are gonna lose me as a customer.
And since you say this is a brick, so any suggestion what I buy next?(Except MSi)

UPDATE: Well, It turns out that MSi is NOT a "We dont give a **** " kind of Company.
I talked and well, they agreed to EXTEND the warranty(i.e Carry out this repair for FREE).
But I am still wondering as to how does a new mobo fail in 6-7 months time!! Either way looks like my laptop is getting its third mobo in abt 2 years!!(Guiness World Record? Lol)

Hi I have a question. Lately, when I have Itunes open or VLC Player and then I am on google chrome I can't turn down or up the volume using the FN + F7 or F8 Key. I can only change the volume when I click Itunes or VLC and then use the keyboard option. Why is this? Also I am using Vista 64 bit Service Pack 2. Thanks.

@ Silicon I was gonna say man. I'm pretty sure you hit the lemon law clause, so at least they have extended your warranty.... Look at the bright side man, chances are if you keep running into problems as parts start to dry up, maybe they'll just give you a new machine.

Xataxx, how about any of your other function key combos? Do they respond at all? I highly doubt your keyboard would be at fault. It's rare to see those go, but you might want to try reseating it. It's quick and easy. After that it could be drivers acting up for the keyboard, or a config file getting corrupted. You may want to look and see if you can find the setting in control panel that will let you change your keyboard profile to another type and then back again.

Alternatively if it's just that key combo thats malfunctioning, look into device manager and see if you can find the keyboard. It might be under HID devices, or under USB. I forget off the top of my head, but anyways, just uninstall it, and then search for a new device. It should find your keboard again and autoconfig the profile for the type of keyboard.

    @Cat,

So your old girl is starting to feel some age huh? Mines still running strong as an ox. Lately windows updates have been causing random errors but its stable as hell for having an alienware gfx card and a QX9200ES knock on wood. I think my only complaint is that the metals getting blemishes where all the magnets keep the lid down unfortunately.

I've been sorta wanting to upgrade for a little while now, new games are starting to push my 48 a little too much at native res. Yes I know the downside to 1920x1200.... the E7405 is looking pretty good right about now if I can find one. I might try to get my laptop appraised down at the local pc store and see if I can't trade up.

In any case I think we can all attest that we have had a good run so far, Sil's just been taking alot of breaks inbetween lol.

I have a GX730, which is almost essentially the same computer hardware wise, I just want to thank you for giving a step by step of cleaning out the cooling system for this. My gx was running at 85-90 C' plus underload and thats extremely scary. I'll do this right away, I have a desktop cooler for it to sit on but of course, the fans are in the wrong spots so I'm going to go ahead and build my own. Anyway, thanks again.

Haha, aye mate, the machine still running games apserlutely strongly, strange stuttering issues i am having to endure though which is really doing my head in. I do still however run the outdated 4850 msi bios where as the GT725's came with a newer revision, and ofcourse i had a mad session of pushing the memory to like 1160 mhz from overclocking, just couldn't get the core going to crazy!

Im in need of new ram and HDD methinks, surely the card aint ready to give up yet :S.

I've searched this enormous thread but can't find specific answers. I have GT725-074us (with P8600) and just ordered a Q9100 ($80/new).
Do I have to flash the bios? If so, does anyone know what specific bios I need to flash it with?

I wanted to start a new thread but I thought I would try on this thread first.

I have the advent version of the GT725 (7555) and I would like an opinion on one thing and a question about wireless.

First, I'm on vacation in a country where evening temperatures can be 30C and I just wanted your opinion on my temps (which I think are quite high).
The first value is when I'm just browsing and watching videos and the second set is the max (when playing AC:brotherhood maxed out)

    RAM 58C, 92C
CPU All 4 at less than 60C, All 4 less than 90C
    GPU 67C 87C
    HDD 45C 51C

What do you guys think? (I have already opened the laptop up and cleaned the fan and vents) I'm thinking of removing the back cover for the duration of my stay here.

Second, when I tried to connect to wifi today I couldn't get a signal from my hotspot or the other 2 nearby. I noticed that the wireless notification light was switched off and went to turn the adapter on through the 'change adapter settings' page but when I got there it was already turned on. So I disabled it and then enabled it but it didn't work (and still no light). I ran the troubleshooter and it tells me that the wireless adapter is disabled even though I just turned it on.
I have no idea what's wrong here.
    Any ideas?

Yes definitely remove the back cover. It only takes 2 screws.
    Those temps are getting dangerous.

Then probably get a cooler. But it might not do anything because the air is already so hot. If you drink beer, get the other type of cooler, and just use your laptop on top with the cover off :D

As for the Wifi, maybe you need to actually put your finger on the light :p sorry if that sounds stupid, but it can be hard to realize the touch sensitive buttons.

Well, after removing the cover all temps are at or under 60C when I'm doing general work. When playing AC:B all temps were at mid 70's. The numbers look good and I'm quite relieved.

The wireless problem was weird. After my post I restarted the laptop twice and even after pressing the touch button to get the wireless started it wouldn't start the wifi nor the bluetooth, so I actually did a system restore which was about a day old and now it works.
Still have no idea about what happened.

i just got back my laptop after getting the DC jack replaced, and need to get a new AC adapter since it partly melted the plastic in the connector tip... will this adapter work without requiring me to get an additional tip or something? the price is pretty decent, given how RK computer is charging $77, and ebay would have me pay closer to $40 to get it in Canada.

Yes, unless you wish to overclock the processor, which will require a different bios.

Also Kirrr, I noticed you have the WD Scorpio Black, i'm looking into getting one of these. Would you recommend it?

Faster than the 5400RPM Scorpio Blue, but an SSD is much more faster. As I know the Black is the fastest notebook hard drive except the hybrid ones.

Tell me about it! The amount of money i've put into this with the new CPU and SSD etc... to get all that in a new model is gonna cost me a lot!

..also my 725 has kinda grown on me over the years. It has a sentimental value no other laptop could match :frown:

Lol what has happened to me

Hey everyone I was wondering if upgrading my msi gt725 210uk with an SSD ideal or not?
Also since the graphic card is starting to becoming old, anyone knows the best overclock possible for it?
I also have 2 thunder bugs dead in my screen :/ and I can't get rid of them, anyone has any idea how to?

I also only have a score of P6245 in 3DMarks, is that normal?

I've just checked and my quad core changes speed on it's own accord. Sometimes it goes to 1.595.8 Mhz (multiplier X6) then jumps to 2074 Mhz (multiplier X7.5 ehilr in turbo mode -20%), is that normal?

Hi, this is going to be a noobie question for you guys. Hope you can help.

I have an advent 7555 gx which I gather is a rebadged msi 725. I currently have 4gb ram and want to upgrade it to 8gb.

When I ran Crucial Memory Checker and Belarc Adviser, they both reckon that I have two ram slots free and that the laptop is capable of using 8gb of ram.

I took the back off the laptop and can easily see the two filled memory slots but I cannot for the life of me find the other two slots to put the extra 2x2gb sticks in.

I notice that some of you have 8gb so hope you can point it out to me please.

    Cheers

    Lyv

Any standard DDR2 SODIMMS will do, I upgraded mine a while ago and it made a huge difference, especially if you disable the windows paging file/virtual memory. There are only 2 slots so you would have to use 2x4GB sticks.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply, although not what I had hoped to hear as I'll have to ditch the 2 2gb chips, haven't priced the 4gb ones yet.

How do I go about finding Bios settings, when I hit del key on booting there is no option for bios, if you know please?

    Cheers

Bios settings are usually the DEL key or F2 can't remember which it is as I sold my 7555 a while ago and got a sexy (and expensive) Alienware rig.

Good luck, I loved my 7555 and only sold it as I wanted something with a bit more grunt for Battlefield 3 :)

    Hello folks

Does anyone know whether GT725 can support 8GB ram?

Coz I seems to get a mixed answer on the internet where 8GB seems to work/not work on this model by different users.

    Can anyone clarify on this?

Hey all, having some trouble getting the GT725 to detect my mini-TOSlink cable in the optical slot (which i read on here is the 1st of audio jacks coming from the front on the right hand side). Updated the realtek drivers with Live Update 5 to no avail! Any thoughts? Also having a god awful time getting BF3 to play right. FPS is 40ish with low settings but keeps dropping to around 6 fps every 10-15 seconds... Also can't get the BIOS to update with Win7. Keeps giving me 32bit vs. 64 bit errors

Of note: running Win7 Pro, trying to output to Tritton AX720 headset.

    Playback devices shows:
Realtek HDMI output (not plugged in)
    Speakers
Realtek Digital Output (not plugged in)

Device Manager also shows a mass storage controller and a "unknown device" under other devices that need drivers

Go to the realtek website and download the drivers from there. Those will give you the sound manager if you don't already have it.

Actually, go into control panel and look for the Realtek Hd Audio Manager app. If, and you should have it, click it and it will open up an show you tabs for Speakers and Microphone.

On the speakers tab double click the green speaker jack and it should give you options to describe the type of plug currently connected. Tick the box that says S/PDIF out. By the way S/PDIF is the same and arguably more universal term for TOSlink.

    Enjoy awesome surround sound bro.

I knew it had to be something stupid like that. I clicked all those little icons but never thought to double click em for some reason. Working now and the lack of DDLive on the Envy was a big disappointment. The sound is fantastic! Much better than "Beats Audio" to the headset. But what do you expect going from non-DDL to DDL?

But there's still the little hiccup with BF3 performance. Basically here's my situation: my brother built a new desktop for playing BF3 and is loaning me his GT725 for me to play on in lieu of my Envy 14 as the 5650 just doesnt cut it in BF3. The GT725 is doing great normally, but every 10-15 seconds the FPS nosedives and becomes unplayable (around 2-6 fps), irregardless of settings. I've put it on 640x480 with everything on low including mipmap to high performance and it'll push, iirc, 60 fps but still bottom out every 10-15 seconds. Don't know what to do, I had this issue temporarily with the Envy and dumping the mipmap down seemed to fix it but not the case this time. BTW, the GT725 is running Catalyst 12.2 preview drivers right now.

P8600, i'm fairly certain that's the bottleneck here sadly. In case it matters, the rest of the build is 4850m with 4GB of DDR2. Running Win7.

Assuming that's the issue, can the GT725 be upgraded to the Q9200 and would this help solve the issue? I saw a few on ebay for a good price and the engineering samples are unlocked multis...

As you can see in my signature, I have the smaller brother, and it can play BF3 very well with the Q9200. Bought from ebay user, laptopmonkey. I think its worth the upgrade.

Do you play in full resolution? The screen on this is 1680x1050 I think. How about the graphics settings? Did you get the engineering sample? I liked the q9200 because of the unlocked multiplier and, iirc, functioning temp sensors. Will the gt 725 take the q9200?

As far as replacing, is it a simple plug n play?
just put new thermal paste to seal the heat sink and screw everything back down or is there some soldering to do?
