According to CPUz the mainboard number on my GT725 is: MSI-1722

I have a question about installing 8GB of RAM in the GT725. I'm running Win7 64bit. I've just swapped out the original 4GB of RAM for 2x4GB of Kingston DDR2 800 modules.

I know that officially in the specs for the GT725, 8GB of RAM isn't supported but when I booted up the machine with 8GB it worked perfectly fine. CPUz correctly reports 8GB. However, after about 10mins the whole system freezes or BSODs. If I restart immediately it BSODs repeatedly just after the login screen. If I leave the machine for about 20mins and boot up again, it will work fine for another 10 mins or so before starting to BSOD.

These symptoms lead me to think the instability is temperature related and starts crashing when the RAM gets warm. (I have no temperature issues when running 2x2GB RAM).

Does anyone know what could be causing this or have had similar issues with their machine? I'd be grateful for any help.

EDIT: Could it be that the larger RAM modules require a bit more voltage on the NB memory controller to be stable? If so is there any way to adjust voltages in the BIOS?

What kind of modules did you install? 667 or 800? Try increasing the CL

They are KVR800D2N6/4G modules. They are 800mhz modules but I also tried running them at 667Mhz but it made no difference. The CL timings were automatically set using SPD and CPUz reports 6-6-6-18 which should ok. I might try increasing it to C7 timings to see what happens.

I had no luck with adjusting the CAS timings. In the end I tested each module individually and discovered one of the new 4GB modules seems to be faulty and becomes unstable when it gets warm. Will have to contact Kingston RMA and hope they are kind enough to replace it.

In the mean time I've put one of the old 2GB Transcend modules in alongside the functional 4GB module to have 6GB of RAM. Oddly enough CPUz and Everest are both reporting that the memory is running in dual-channel mode. I didn't think that was possible with asymmetric modules from different manufacturers! It seems to be perfectly stable and happy running this configuration though.

Hey guys. My computer has recently been overheating and I think one of the fans doesn't work. No hot air comes out the side air vent only the back one. Is this an easy fix and can I just open it up and fix it myself or should I send it in to MSI?

I think there is just one fan, special type that blows in 2 directions.

Try cleaning the heatsink and fan, make sure you clean between them also.

If I need to clean the heatsink/fan then I need to open up the computer myself but won't that void my warranty?

It won't. For MSI is fine if customers open the laptop in order to clean or upgrade it. My internal fan had some bearing problems so I had to send it to the techincal service. I sent my GT627 without the sticker, and they repaired it completely free, including pick up service. And the best part is that they returned it without a new sticker.
That happened in the technical service in Barcelona, I guess is the same around the world.

Did you flash a bad vBIOS onto it?

You can desolder it from the board and flash an original vBIOS onto it with a special device.

    i just bought this thing: PE4H + EC2C ExpressCard to PCI-E Adapter Ver2.4(or PM3N - eBay (item 180639845595 end time Apr-14-11 08:08:48 PDT)
and a graphics card which doesnt needs power supply.
is it going to work?? and able to flash my ati ?

    hi Guys...

Maybe one of you knows an answer. Is it possible to adjust the RAM Voltage?
I was using the p 9500 and Kingston HyperX SO-DIMM 4 GB DDR2-800 Kit KHX6400S2ULK2/4G. It runs but never in the default clocks of the RAM that are 800mhz 4-4-4-12, NB didn't start no matter if i use SPD or I time it myself. The Ram only runs under 800 5-5-5-15 with the p 9500.
Now i use an q 9200 es quad and in that case now there is no chance to get the book started with the Kingston, no matter if i try to adjust, it didn't starts. With the Transcend Factory RAM it starts and works stabil, but also now there is no way to adjust anything, the RAM only runs in 800mhz 6-6-6-18 conditions. Tried to contact msi but no answer. What could be the reason for all that, i think the Kingstons need more Voltage?!?!. It would be very nice if someone can help...

Would anyone like to trade their gt725 for my gt627?
it supports quads fully like the gt725, only thing it doesn't support is the 4850 on built in display which is why I want to trade.

I don't know what's happening but I flash the cards booting the computer in MSDOS with a usb stick. For Nvidia and my GT627 I know all the steps and the right timming for performing them without seeing anything in the screen, but I don't remember how to do it with ATI... maybe if you can find the steps on the internet you can give it a go...

Kapros, what you need to do is find someone who can create a batch file that auto executes upon boot, and will automatically open and reflash the bios. The process will be similar to how they have the bios flash batch file (.bat) file that we are supposed to use for upgrading the main bios.

Worst comes to worst man, if you have an issue getting the card flashed, I'm sure you can easily find an alienware 4850 master card floating around and use that for your computer. The heatsink will mate perfectly with the standard msi heatsink, the only modding you will need to do is get slimmer heat transfer pads for your ram chips, or just dont use them. I put a little paste on mine in place of it and it works fine, just make sure its non conductive. Thats what I've been rocking in my computer for going on one year now.

Might as well upgrade, the GX740s have great cards (5870 I think) and will still perform just as well as the new 6 series since they only have up to the 6850s in laptops currently. Only when you get into the 6900 series from my understanding does performance really start to push away. Also, ram speed in the 6850s from what I've seen are DDR3 strangely enough, though that was an ACER... This place has been slowing down alot, I'm guessing everyones been upgrading to the newer MSI's or something?

Also, out of curiosity... Has anyone priced their machine(s) lately? I'm curious about an upgrade, though entirely not neccesary atm, I'm still beasting along just fine...

Hi all, new to site so hello. Sorry for posting twice.

I have had my Gt 725 for over 2 years and have started to get rattleing noises from GPU fan, had a look and it looks like the fan bearing is on way out.

    Any had anything similar happen?
And what are my options to replace?

    Many thanks in advance.

Hi guys, I need an advice. Is it possible to upgrade form C2D P9500 to C2D T9800 in msi gt725 laptop? If I upgrade the CPU can the laptop be able to accommodate in terms of voltage and heat.

    Thank you..

 35TDP for T9800 compare to 25TDP for P9500 is quite a lot of difference..
I've read through this thread, seems there is no other user upgrade to C2D T9xx series... :(
If I really wanted to upgrade to C2D T9xxx series CPU, what factor should look out for (cooling management)?

I don't know the TDP of my quad but I guess if a GT627 can run it even overclocked, a T9800 shouldn't be an issue for a GT725

I have another question.. How do guys overclock the laptop RAM? I am using Mushkin Essentials Ram (2x4GB DDR2 800mhz). My laptop will produced BSOD when I overclock it to 20% (using MSI GT725 overclock suite).

The fans are easy to replace, the models should be the same throughout most of the GT and GX series laptops since the all share the same form factor, less some parts here and there, the MSI 1722, GX720, GT725, GT729, all share the same exact form factor, Your best bet is to search for someone parting out the fan and replace it that way.

But, Cat I am curious to see how you reconditioned your fan...

Also, Anyone have any strange issues using Catalyst 11.4? When I installed it, it forced windows Aero off, and reports that the color depth is set too low for Aero to work, and CCC opens but is a transparent window... I have hunch that the new Visual Basic 2010 x64 framework may be to blame for this issue or the drivers just hate alienware graphics cards. 11.3 seems to have the same issue, so for now, I think I'm gonna just rock 10.3.

Those profiles are setup by the MSI system control manager. Try reinstalling the SCM and you will get your profiles back.

Hello, I wouuld like to seek your helps. I have installed a SSD in place of the normal HDD, everything worked fine until the moment I decide to replace my bluray with a HDD caddy which contained my old HDD.

Playing around with screws and cover, I finally installed my caddy, but then the problem occurs. I could not boot up my laptop, whenever I click on power button, all I can see is a blue sleep icon and that's it...

I have tried to plug out everything (included battery) and hold power button for 30s. None seems to be working.

    Please help me...
