Yeah man, you going to try 9.7?
If its not drivers its got to be hardware related, unless its the hdmi cable?
Single screen mode or clone works.
Although i have noticed, set the monitor as primary and the laptop screen as extended, and it works!!!
-
Yeah i think i might do when i get a spare moment soon, although i dont usually use beta drivers, i may wait for the 9.7s to be officialy released as i don't need to use an extended desktop atm. I'm pretty sure its not a hardware issue for me, as i have been able to use an extended desktop before. Its only since updating to 9.6 that the problems started.
-
I really wouldn't worry about slightly differing boards and drivers within the 4 series chipset. Historicaly this mattered, but the differences in how shaders and specific parts of the hardware are called hardly matters these days.
-
True, but i did notice significant slowdowns and lock ups using 9.7, i dont class that as normal so i went back to default, VGA out isnt working on my samsung tv .... i will have to try on a stand alone monitor in a minute to see if its an issue with compatability or what not.
-
Looks lke we're not the only ones with this problem catacylsm

Well its time we try and adress this once and for all, there could be a possible conflict with the HDMI driver, prehaps audio?
Will start toying after food! -
Yeh thats what i was beginning to wonder.. because i have an M-Audio external soundcard plugged in via USB (as i compose and record guitar). So maybe it is a conflict between that and the hdmi.
Is there an updated driver for the hdmi audio? I am still using stock. -
When I try to install the most recent version of Windows 7 x64, during the 'Collecting Information" part (which is the first part of the installation, right after you select "install now" from the dvd menu) I get an error that a required CD/DVD device driver is missing. I can't seem to find a CD/DVD driver on the windows 7 DVD, the msi drivers cd, and I can't find any information about this from google (or this thread). Have other people run into this issue, and if so how did you fix it?
Thanks.
**Edit: After re-downloading the iso image of Windows 7 and burning a new dvd, the install process works. So something there got corrupt. -
Yes, MSI has released updated audio drivers, and there vga are different to mine (well .01 higher then mine
) I think HDMI drivers come with the realtec driver i think (ok im not sure) but i have seen them before, prehaps in a more modern ATI package?
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
The MOST up to date drivers are direct from Realtek, not ATI. ATI now provide a driver in package with the Catalyst, but I tend to find it's not as solid as Realtek's offering.
Realtek offer a seperate HDMI audio driver under the HD Audio Codecs download section, this is what you want. -
True, well audio over HDMI seems solid by me,

Radeon mobility have a 9.7 driver out?? We shouldnt need to be modding right? -
What OS are u running? cos i am on vista 32 atm (gona upgrade to win7 64bit when it is released)
-
we shouldn't but download it.. the 4850 doesnt appear in the inf file. It's only for w7 64bit though isn't it
-
Hmm just says its up to date (MSI's driver installed here)
I may try the advents earlier drivers to see if the problem persists, this sucks though, i have plans to buy a nice monitor to go with my machine, and if it doesnt work then *arg* lol. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
As a side note; we've finally got our first 1GB crossfire 4850 results from Marshall over in the AW forums
-
Yeah, its great news that alex, if the users dearing enough to flash the cards, he can set some world records
And the GTX 280M are bugs in comparison
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Pfftt, sod 3dmark, I want games running at decent fps, max settings at 192x1200, in a machine I can take to work for the late shifts
-
Haha, none of that synthetic crap
pure brute power from here on.
Im having to download like 2-3 gigs of world at war patches :S curse 200kb download! -
lol try dial up at 45k
-
Did that .inf file I sent you work?
200th post!
-
ok, updated to 9.7 and can not play a game with out a buzzing noise coming from the video card area. Complete lock up and can only power off. Worse than 9.6. I can't even roll them back. I only bought this to play games when the rest of the family is asleep and now no fun. It can't be a heat issue. Where should I look for older drivers? Google is not being my friend.
Win7 64-bit -
I've got a copy of 9.6, modded and unmodded for Win Vista 64bit, it will still work with your OS, I just have no place to host.
EDIT: Sorry just re-checked and I only have modded. -
Our card isn't in the supported list, according to the release notes, but I did find something else interesting in the known issues section that might help you: "HDMI audio may not be enabled in some DX10 games when Crossfire has been enabled." I know it says in Xfire, but it may still help you.
-
Maybe I'm installing and uninstalling the dirty way. After reading your signature I see that i just installed the 9.7 over 9.6. I don't know if that is it, but this is crap!
-
oooh, yes thats a bit of a no no. No harm done though, just uninstall using a driver cleaner, or at least uninstall and delete the driver software in device manager.
-
Hello all,
I got my 725-212 and I am loving it. Today I formatted and installed win 7 ultimate rtm. I need help from experienced users. Sorry if my questions have already been answered but this thread is huge could not find what I am looking for..
1) When I right click on desktop I cant see the control panel for catalyst driver. I have installed the latest driver from here
When I open the device manager for the display adapter it says: Ati Radeon 4850 HD (Microsoft Corporation WDMM 1.1)
2) Again in the device manager I got a driver problem. One of the devices is titled as mass storage controller and the other one is an unknown device
I am trying to install the drivers via windows update but it does not work.
3)Hopefully once I am done with the driver problems I will try to get the best out this machine. I overclocked the ram and cpu by modifying the bios settings but I havent quite tested them yet. According to bios settings ram frequency is 800mhz and turbo button kicks the speed by %20. Has anyone tried these setting ? can you run it stable ?
4) I will appreciate if you can give any specific hints to tweak up the performance further.
5) Lastly, it is a bit irrelevant but I think some of you are using windows7 64 bit, like me. What did you guys do about the activation problem?
Thanks -
Well I am no pro, but i had the same issue. Just use the drivers cd that came with the gt725. I too upgraded to Win 7 RTM 64-bit and the cd worked fine for both devices. As for the catalyst driver, I'm still having that problem and when i try to uninstall it says its not there. Then, when i go to install it says its already there.
You can get an activator from plenty of sites. -
Hey taqu3, welcome to the owners lounge. You'll find instructions to install the majority of the drivers in my signature. Installing graphics drivers is a lot harder than you will have thought when you bought the laptop.
The unknow device you speak of could be anything from the touchpad to the webcam, but the mass storage controller is Intel Matrix Storage Manager. -
Whats happened is its installed the Microsoft generic display drivers (bad)
I'd also reconmend underclocking the RAM to 667mhz, only because when you press the turbo button, it overclocks the CPU AND RAM 20%, or whatever your specified BIOS amout is. Thats what mine is set to and I have no issues with it at all.

A few tips about driver installs for all of the new owners...
If you're starting clean install the latest MSI vga drivers first. This will get the proper CCC on your machine. After that uninstall the display driver in device manager and reboot. Then, use device manager to upgrade the display driver as per Lambo's instructions.
If you have CCC problems (not appearing, etc.), start by running the ATI driver setup.exe, selecting Uninstall instead of Install. You can run drivercleaner after that, but without running the ATI unistall program I have had numerous issues. Again, you MUST use the CCC from the MSI vga package. -
I have a head ache now. I appreciate the help guys. This is my first notebook, so sorry in advance and retro. I've built many home pc's and am very good at fixing things, but this is killing my eyes. I'm going to take what i got from these last few posts and see what comes out of it all. I will let you know the outcome. Thanks again.
-
lol, I've never actually seen a laptop kill someones eyes
-
Hey guys,
Thanks a lot for your help. I fixed the driver problems and I got win7 activated. However to fix the display adapter problem, I tried lambo's instructions first but it did not work out or I could not do it I dont know...This is how I fixed the problem: I first uninstalled the driver via device manager then I installed the driver from here then I updated driver by installing the new display adapter driver which is here (I installed only the display adapter (37.9 mb one) and I don't know whether it would make any difference if I installed the whole suite). It seems to be working properly now thanks again. -
Yes this is how you should install, worked for me two. So worth taking note of this if anyone is confused.
-
Hey i am trying to mod the ATI driver in order to install the driver directly with the setup...
I have done it for Vista 32 and it seems to work for me so if someone is interesting in testing it for Vista 64 it would be great
If the Vista 32 are ok i will post them
-
Nice work! which driver are you doing it for? 9.6 or 7?
-
for 9.7: mine seems to works good: same score @ vantage and no crash in game
edit: see my page of tutorial to download the driver for vista 32 -
quick question
has anyone ever had an issue of it not posting? i installed win7, updated and rebooted several times to check for errors, and all was fine... i did not make any hardware changes from stock.
left it on overnight, and now all i get is a black screen (but the cresent shaped light is on at the bottom with the num and screen lock). rebooting it won't even show the post/bios screen? -
I followed what I could from the tut, but I'm sure i screwed up along the way. First I uninstalled the 9.7 package, then I used a driver cleaner, then I installed the MSI vga drivers, then I uninstalled the video driver and rebooted. When I got the modded files in the ati folder it said windows encountered a problem installing the device when I picked have disk, so I just browsed to the 9.7 package on my desktop. Now I have the ccc so I don't know for sure if it is good or not. I haven't tried to play COD WAW yet, which was my main issue. However, this morning when I turned it on it said starting windows and never resumed.

I am trying to get the cpu frequency when the turbo is on. I used a freeware and it reads 1995 mhz. It seemed kinda odd to me maybe the overclocking is not working..Plus I did the 3d06 benchmark. During all the cpu tests the fps was about 1-2. I did not quite get it..Is it supposed to be that slow ? How do you guys read the overclocked values ? In the bios setting I set the ram frequency to 800mhz and cpu overclocking to %20. If these settings are supposed to work how much boost should I expect ? (My model came with quad core 2.0ghz ) from 2.0ghz to 2.2 ghz ?
Thanks. -
The q9000 overlocks only to 2.075 ghz whatever you put in the bios you will not be able to reach more than 2075 with the turbo button
-
Quad cant overclock im afraid not like the dual core, and 3dmark 06 does that to all the cpus, it just drags the fps to that low because its rendering via that.
-
guys, have you flashed your bios? i was wondering if i would be able to overclock my q9000 properly through the bios (set fsb etc, not just select percentages). Are then any performance improvements? or should i stick with the 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' saying.
-
quote from September PCFormat review of Novatech X90 GTX Pro
Price: £2600
Spec: i7 940, GTX 280M 1 Gig 2x 64 Gig Raid.
'For gaming on the go though we'll stick with our current favourite, the quad core HD4850 touting MSI GT725, which is both lighter and half the price.'
Pretty sweet! -
haha excellent!
-
lol, the one they reviewed as a dual core :/
But glad to hear them say that. Perhaps sometime down the line when stuff gets cheap this will change. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Everything changes with pcs given time; its half the fun. The GT725 is an exceptional machine for the cost though; the UK market at least (the US laptop market is much much stronger and more varied) doesn't really have anything else like it, or at least its successor the GT729, now that the GT725 seems to have gone end of line; next step up is the Alienware 4850 Xfire-equipped M17; however that costs another few hundred easy to get the same spec in all but GPU.
-
Wait, what? the GT725 is end of line??
I still haven't brought one/anything yet haha. -
If you dont mind me asking.. how much is that m17 going to cost you?
we used to have to competitions to see who could make the most expensive computer on the alienware website.. i mean cummon.. £706 to upgrade to 8gb of ddr3 ram!?!
for the same spec as my 725, but with dual 4850s it cost an extra £411
wish i could afford an alienware desktop
suppose i could just not go to uni and use my student loan xD -
The 725 is still available from some websites, although most say out of stock.
the 729 will be identical but with 1gb of video memory and ddr3 ram. I'm not sure if it will be dual or quad core though..
