no, this heatsink will not work with the GTX770M, i´ve try it, because my old GPU was a GTX570M.

    Here you see a GTX570M
    1495.jpg
    Here you see a GTX770M
    2129.jpg

Everything above the Ram row on top, is located at different positions. The DIE Size is also different.

but it give a Kepler Heatsink without CPU Bridge. MSI has use this in the GT60/GT70 Models with GTX670MX, GTX675MX and GTX675MX. I use this Heatsink for my GTX770M in a MS-16F2. The Partnumber of this Heatsink is: E31-0406162-Y31 and here is it: New Original MSI Heat Sink NVIDIA GTX670MX GTX675MX GTX680M E31 0406162 Y31 | eBay

MSI use now 5 different Heatsinks in the GT Serie.
    1. E31-0405242-Y31 for GTX460M, GTX560M and GT555M
    2. E31-0405765-Y31 for GTX570M, GTX580M, GTX670M and GTX675M
    3. E31-0406162-Y31 for GTX670MX, GTX675MX and GTX680MX (can be also use with GTX7**M and GTX8**M Cards)
    4. E31-0406580-Y31 for GTX770M, GTX780M, GTX870M and GTX880M (Can be also use with GTX6**MX Cards)
    5. (at this time unknow Partnummer) for GTX970M and GTX980M

    For the HD7970M, HD8970M and R9 M290X use MSI the Heatsink E31-0406091-Y31

Yes I see there is some difference in the heatsinks

On the left heat sink for (fermi) 570M/580M and on the right the heat sink for 670mx/675mx/680m/770m/780m(kepler).

Yes you need to grind/dremmel a bit and use some pads if you want to use a Fermi heatsink with kepler.

    Hey guys, sorry noob questions.

just blew off the dust of my GT780DXR havent really touched it in a year. Just have a few questions....

Are there any new updates or drivers that you recommend...im sure im behind on a few or if there are some i should not update to.

also, i just upgraded my wireless router to a 5Ghz router(since the 2.4GHz single is clogged around my complex)...i realized the wifi card in this my computer only supports 2,4GHz....any recommendations on a replacement that will get me in a better speed level.

Also, any good "plug and play" budget upgrades for this thing?

does that also mean I could grind/dremmel my current 560M heatsink and reuse it?

If you don't need Bluetooth then the Intel 6200/6205 are good cards that are dual band 300 Mbps.

If you ever need to add Bluetooth a USB Bluetooth dongle is cheap.

Proper wireless card and router setting are essential to getting good performance from your home network.

Is it best that I always use the latest Nvidia drivers or should I stick to a specific driver version to avoid certain errors such as that Windows Kernel Mode Driver?

I just replaced my GPU to a new GTX570M recently becaused I faced a lot of problems previously.

    Kindly advice. :)

I do update my drivers and test them out before deciding to stick with them. Nothing bad comes from trying newer drivers. They've been pretty stable recently :) you could go back if something went wrong though. It's not permanent fortunately ;)

Alright, I shall test with older drivers to see if it fixes my issue.

I just realised I face this problem while web browsing with Mozilla Firefox. Makes me wonder if the issue comes from the driver or Mozilla.

    Thanks for the reply! =)

EDIT : I also faced this issue while playing videos using Windows Media Player

My palmrest area also carries some static electricity, is it dangerous? I feel sometimes especially at the corners.

Recently, my battery stopped charging at 80%, now 74%. I ran the battery calibration with no success, it still doesn't charge fully.
Is there anything I can run to check the integrity of my battery before ordering a new one? Thanks!

You have an aging battery thus why it's not charging up fully anymore.
A battery's life expectancy is about 1000 cycles then it starts to deteriorate.

I got some malware and used tweaking.coms WIndows AIO repair to fix it. After I "fixed" it, I noticed the battery issue.
I did reinstall the drivers for the battery - no joy. So I have to chalk it up to coincidence then?

You should check if your notebook is grounded. Do you feel the same static discharge when you touch other metallic areas? If not I would get myself a filtering surge protector as to iron out any spurious currents coming from the wall socket. If these discharges continue the notebook needs a check to determine if there's a current leakage somewhere.

Regarding the driver, reinstall it with the "clear settings" flag checked and than test. Otherwise revert to the previous functioning one :)

Thx for the replies @Kevin @Meaker!

    On another note...

I'm running Win 8.1 Pro, were there any versions of Cinema Pro II and the NVIDIA OC Tool that work on W 8.1? And I would also need Afterburner, correct?

Cinema Pro may still work with Win8.1 but not NVIDIA OC tool.
    Afterburner is fine.

You can force the turbo state with nvidia inspector but it's easier just to have a clocks short cut of your own design.

The static I felt was because my laptop was plugged to an extension plug that I use in my rented unit. I then used my own extension and it's working fine now, no more static.

I have also installed the latest drivers and so far there's nothing wrong, I'm glad and I hope it stays problem free.

I do have a very recent issue though, artifacts. I played FF13 a while ago and experienced major artifacts all a sudden.

I even experienced this sometimes even in desktop, odd. Here's a screen shot, artifact seems bad. I wonder if the problem lies in the GPU.

Can you run Furmark & 3DMark to verify this artifact?
What if you go to BIOS directly by pressing DEL key during boot up?

That could be a GPU issue since the desktop is being accelerated by the dGPU.

MSI never made the software for Win8.1, but you can find the EXE file and go to its property and then set the compatibility mode.
If problem persists, then you either have to bear with it, or just remove it completely.

Hi guys, I have some issues that Id like some help with. Ive just installed a HD5870M into my GT780 to replace its artifacting GTX560M and things aren't going well after Ive reinstalled windows 8.1 on a new SSD I also installed alongside the HD5870M.

    1. I have troubles with SCM - it keeps turning my bluetooth on and off repetitively that I chose to uninstall it. Ive also lost the ability to adjust my screen brightness, eject my CD drive and the P1 and movie clip buttons dont work.

    2. I get an MBR error whenever my computer reboots from a hibernation. I have to take the SSD out, let the computer boot from the original HDD that had windows 7 on it, put SSD back in and reboot off it. It seems like the problem is that the laptop skips PXE ROM as first boot option and goes straight to the SSD.

    3. does this laptop actually support an AMD graphics card? it doesnt seem to want to play nicely with an AMD GPU.

Hope Ive listed my problems clearly. Please help!

What if you put the original GPU back? What happens then to the issues you reported?
How about the original HDD? Have you put it back and see how the system behaves?

I wont even bother putting my 560M back as it doesnt even display to the screen anymore.

The original HDD is in along with the SSD. They both fill the 2 SATA slots available each. And everything is normal except for hibernation with SSD. I have since disabled hibernation.

Im still annoyed about issue 1... :(

Make sure you use the right version of SCM, see below utility download page, which mentions there are two (2) versions of SCM. One for clean install, and the other for Win7 to Win8 OS upgrade.
MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more 64
I would say you need to use the SCM for clean install since you manually reinstalled the OS.
Additionally, check for firmware update for your SSD and make sure it is up-to-date.

Sorry for the late reply guys, been busy with studies lately.

    1.jpg
Based on my observation, artifacts appear after going above 75 degree celcius. This is abnormal right?

Ya, BIOS is accessible but what do I do from there?

Ya, but it's a new one that came all the way from China? Maybe the installation was not properly done? What could be the possibilities for this fault?

Ok, if it has artifacts then it's not good.
Try using Afterburner and adjust the GPU/VRAM to run at lower clockspeeds and verify it again with Furmark.
If problem persists, then the VGA card needs to be replaced.

Check that the heatsink is correctly sitting flat on the GPU and that the thermal tape is all there and also flat on the other parts of the graphics card.

Great link! This is very exciting news since I'm somewhat torn at the moment between upgrading my GT780R, building a SFF desktop, or starting to save my pennies for a new gaming laptop. The rest of the laptop is still pretty solid, but I wish the GPU performance was better. The ol' GTX 560m is showing her age.

So I read the translated version of that page, and the OP seems to say that the 560m heatsink will work but with a slight modification. Can anyone see the picture he posted? The forum won't let me see it without registering, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get an authorization code to do that. Edit: nevermind. Figured that out. Does it need just a little dremmeling to remove a couple bits?

Anyone know a good source for the card? He linked to rjtech. That's a lot cheaper than the cards on ebay...

Yes dremeling is the only route unless you can get a compatible heatsink. Heatsinks for the newer cards are a bit scarse unless someone pulls it from a newer GT60/GT70 which come with it. RJtech is the only cheaper source for now and they seem trustable. At least Talon did buy his 970m from them. Keep in mind that RJtech sells Clevo cards not MSIs so if you get one don't tinker with it's vBIOS or you risk bricking it.

This is potentially possible, but no one has tested such spec yet.

In theory, would the 980m just need more of a heatsink modification? It would for certain need a 180W power supply.

GPU also requires more power, no one knows if the PCB can withstand such loading.
Every watt does make a difference on notebook platform and perhaps a few watts over the designed spec can cause the system board to fail.
