Hi all,
I have been reading this forum with interest, and wanted to know what everyone thought about the pros and cons of using 1600MHz RAM vs the standard 1333MHz RAM. Will there be much of a performance boost?
I'm based in Australia and looking a getting one of my relatives to bring a GT780DXR back with them when they visit in October.

Not really unless you use bandwidth heavy tasks (games do not fall under this).
-
Try reading posts that were made earlier maybe few pages back. There is no performance gain for 2630 QM. If you opt for 2720 QM or higher you might see some (read a percent or two) improvement but then any improvement will be dependent on RAM timings.
Cheers -
The CPU upgrades are pretty expensive too, unfortunately >.<
-
I've got one of these too, doing my first commute with it today. I may write something about when I get back. So far the build quality appears to be impressive.

I like my belkin 17.3" backback.

Just bought my GT780R the other day! It is SWEET. The only drawback is that for this price I was expecting a blu-ray player. Also, the location of the AC adapter on the back of the computer is a little disheartening. You have to be careful with it, otherwise it looks like it will break.
-
The case I purchased was:
Lunar Laptop Bag - Briefcase, fits up to 18.4" | 18.4" Laptop Bags | Everki
There is plenty of room imo. Not as much as the backpack but more than enough for most situations.
I am not sure where they are made. The company list California on their contact page. -
The designers will never be able to make us all happy. I have the 15 GT683DXR but I LOVE the fact that they put the power plug in the back. If it was up to me I would put everything in back except maybe one USB and a headphone jack (cant remember the last time I actually used headphones though). I hate it when a bunch of cords are hanging off the sides, it clutters up my desk and takes more side to side space which is usually at a premium for me.
I hope the plug is not flimsy though. I do notice that it is really firm to plug in. -
Updated the BIOS to version 10B and RAID looks like it has been broken. Says Missing Operating System on start up and I can see 2 separate drives from the boot menu.
Did anybody update without losing RAID?
Update:
Wow, looks like I grabbed the wrong BIOS version for non-raid systems.. Correct version is 30B
Update 2:
Applied the correct BIOS update and RAID is applied
-
Actually this is the main disadvantage of using a RAID 0 ... you may lose all your data if a hard disk fails or is damaged or broken RAID for some reason ... if a disk drive fails for any reason, you have more opportunity to recover the data if it is completely stored in it, where RAID can not recover anything
that's why I want my system without RAID configuration, even if I lose a little speed -
by the way there is any way to disable Raid 0 in the laptop without having to pay $ 35 to my reseller for this service?
I do not know if doing the BIOS upgrade for non RAID systems it disables itself as what happened to "xMAR99" without side effects (I do not care having to reinstall Windows. anyway when I have the laptop in my hands I´m going to do a clean installation) -
Haha, Looks like my mistake discovered something new
Try it and tell me how it goes. -
when I have my MSI I'll try
-
1 - burn/save the backup partition before you do anything, breaking the raid will reset the drives to zero.
2 - Restart and go into the RAID menu and unraid the drives, restart, go into BIOS and change the SATA config from RAID to ACHI.
Restart and install windows on your non-raid c drive. profit. -
@MrSeaBass you are a genius thanks for the advice... one more thing... how can I save the backup partition if is hidden
-
I tested my slimline Logitech keyboard which is 18" and it fit. It is a very thin keyboard. If yours is thin it should work but it will be a tight fit.
-
I spent the $0 on Macrium Reflect and made a backup of all four of my partitions. Destroyed the RAID, swapped out the primary HD for a Hybrid and restored the partition setup to the Primary drive. I had to reduce the size of the main partition, but Macrium let me do that.
I now have a non-RAID setup with the OS on C: and my profile directory on the 2nd drive as D:
Disk 1 contains:
1 - BIOS_RVY ~10GB [MSI Recovery]
2 - System 100 MB [Windows 7 Recovery]
3 - OS_Install (C: ) ~456GB
Disk 2 contains:
1 - Data (D: ) ~466GB

Yes. Please let us know. I have to say the shoulder strap is the most comfortable I have used and distributes the weight very well.

When you get the notebook, boot it up and there is a MSI utility that pops up to ask you to make the backup of the recovery partition. You can either burn it to 3 dvd's or you can just have it make .iso image files to burn later. I just had it make the image files (about 9.5gb) and put them on a 16 gb usb drive that I have dedicated for these files only. It is up to you how you want to store them.
This backup not only restores the notebook back to factory settings but also will rebuild the recovery partition on the hdd. So you can completely reformat both drives to zero. -
If you don't want to do it yourself, Gentech PC disables it for free. (only 1 cent)

So how difficult is it to re-install windows and drivers? Since I already have windows 7 ultimate OEM. Anyon have a list of all drivers needed to re-install?
And also how do people feel about Raid-0? -
Raid 0 is a waste, IMO. The speed just isn't there, I seems more like marketing to me. If you want a faster drive get a ssd.
Win install is really easy. The first post of this thread has the links to the MSI drivers and utilities. -
So, in reading this forum and the majority of its 250 pages. I am excited to say i am very pleased with the overall feel of the review. Ive read about a 50/50 mix of people liking and hating both the alienware and the Asus. To those of you who own it, Im going to be placing my order here in the next week or so. Where would you recommend buying it from? Been doing alot of research on the 560m Vers the 570M Im not finding much of a difference. There also isnt to much of a price difference either. Ive got about a 2000 USD budget. And this system looks like ill be able to get it under that. Im wanting to be able to play SC2, Rift, L4D2, a few other first person shooters. Any input from you guys would be excellent. Like i said ive done alot of reading but the majority of it has been this forum and i read almost all of this forum and its been in about an hour Alot of the info has been mashed together lol. Thank you guys for taking the time (If the help comes) for helpin me out
-
Refering to the DXR version
-
I would personally recommend buying the GT780DXR, and since your budget is 2000, you may want to do some upgrades depending on your need. I would also recommend buying from Gentech PC, Ken from there is really helpful.
-
I second this.
-
Ok, So taking a look at the gentech website, I found a barebone system config that will be ready the first week of next month. This is what you guys were talking about right? Ive chosen a few of the upgrades, Ive got a question regarding the Lcd screen upgrade. Is it worth it? pros and cons?
-
I'm excited because I am ordering the DXR tomorrow finally! ha
-
IMO, the standard matte screen is the best notebook screen I have ever used.
-
Ive been curious about it, I see ALOT of these custom websites advertising the screen upgrade, I feel im fairly tech savy but im not really sure what that means lol. but With the options ive chosen i feel really good about it, and with what ive read. I like it. Im curious as to how the lighting effect works.
-
Wait, Barebones as in DIY?
If yes, I wouldn't recommend that since you'll lose a lot of features like the Steel series keyboard and the cooler boost. -
You can buy the GT780DXR-US99 version from gentech costing 1899 USD. You can take itas it is without any customization or just get the wireless updated. It has everything you need even more and has possibility to update cpu in future.

quick question has anyone had any dead pixels so far on there 780R/DXR?
and if I go with a 2 antenna card can I replace it with a 3 antenna card down the line? -
Just got mine from powernotebooks.com. It's extremely fast and I love it so far. I did not have any dead pixels and I haven't seen many complaints about MSI computers having dead pixels. It is a good idea to buy a dead pixel warranty though.
-
Hello, just got a gt780dxr and am setting it up. I cant burn a back up because it says that i am using the wrong speed disk i am using a memorex 4x DVD-RW what is the right speed for this machine thes have worked in my other computer just fine?

I'm putting in the order now. Thanks everyone for all your help
!!
-
Just placed my order
Ken take care of it
-
Just ordered mine. I am collecting the drivers for this. Anyone know where to download the GTX 570M drivers? Nvidia site doesn't even have it on their beta site... Could be a problem for fresh Win7 x64 install... Also, is there a need to update the video bios?
-
Not one dead pixel on my system.... but then again I paid the extra just in case... "Murphy Law" at work as usual.
You can replace the 2 antenna card with a 3 but you would need to have third antenna added. Then you would need a new router that could fully utilize your upgrade. -
Yea I got the just incase insurance thing too ha and how hard is it to replace a 2 with a 3? Like how hard is it to add a 3rd antenna?
-
Hi i place my order today, i would like to know if there is a way to do a fresh install whit the included license?? That would be nice, another thing, i wont setup the laptop because someone is bringing it to my country, can i do the backup anyway?? and if i restore?? i would get the options at the first start to do all the setup of msi again??
Thanks a lot!!! BTW thanks to Donald that was great at helping me DECIDE and making the order and everything, GREAT SERVICE!!! Preciate a lot! -
When you find them all can you post them on here cause I need to clean install win too. Thanks
-
Will do. I've never bought a laptop before, and couldn't even find a beta driver for it.... -
smokinbeanbean1992 Notebook Enthusiast
Here's the latest one that I found earlier in the thread NVIDIA DRIVERS 275.50 BETA. I did see one that was later but I can't find it.
-
I think I found the trick. When you choose 580M, it shows the latest... Here's the link to the 580M (280.26)
Curious... It shows 580M and 560M as supported, but skips 570M. No love... -
smokinbeanbean1992 Notebook Enthusiast
Do you think that would still be compatible?
-
Who knows... My guess, it would probably need an INF file update. I can't test it until Friday...
-
I am pretty sure someone at laptopvideo2go will have a modified inf to make it work...
-
Yes, you can get the drivers at laptopvideo2go. I am running 280.36 from that site. So far things are running great!
