So the new drivers support this GPU in these laptops ? I was off like 3 weeks, surgery and stuff, so i dont know what did i miss. Few pages back, someone was stating that GTX580 makes its way into officially sold GT780 laptops...was that true ? What does it mean for current owners ?

hey guys... I was wondering what windows version should I get if Im going to do a fresh install?
I was thinking in windows 7 ultimate, but there is notorious differences btw this and a Home Premium version? Im a XP user so I dont know that much about Windows 7

    TIA.

Ultimate has a few features extra that you will never use. Home premium 64 bit is the best option.

I'm installing an SSD and performing a clean install of windows. I'd like to have both the SSD and a hard disk available during installation so I can move my app data and user directories to the hard disk.

I've read recommendations to only have the SSD plugged in during installation, but I haven't seen any reference to why. Is it possible to have it my way? Problematic? Why?

I believe I can move those folders after installation, but I think it's easiest (and cleaner) to do it during the install process.

Having only the drive that you are going to do a clean Windows 7 on installed is to prevent any problems from occuring.

If the new SSD is not in the primary drive position 0 when the notebook reboots during the installation it will boot to the primary drive unless you remember to press F11key to choose the secondary drive during each reboot of the installation.

Also if the other drive is sensed to have any hardware issues it could prevent a Windows 7 installation on the new drive.

You will need to open the bottom anyway to install the SSD so why not take out the other drive(s) and put the SSD in the primary slot at position 0 on the SATA bus to begin with.

Don't forget if you are installing Windows 7 from a USB stick(quickest) and the iRST from a 2nd USB stick to remove both the USB sticks during the 1st reboot or the installation process will start from the beginning again after the reboot.

As mentioned Home Premium x64 is best unless you need one of the features in Professional or Ultimate or plan on installing more than 16GB of Ram by using 2 x 8GB memory modules plus 2 x 4GB or putting in 4 x 8GB.

hope someone has some insight on this.

GT780DX w/16GB of RAM. dual 7200rpm drives are non-raid. nothing overclocked, no junk preloaded, clean install of Win7Home 64bit, latest drivers, indexing off.

check out these load times -- do these appear normal to you?

cold boot, time to Windows desktop: 0:57
clock and weather widgets appear: 2:02
    S-Bar icon: 2:10

my work box (AMD Phenom II X4 955, 8GB RAM, single 7200rpm drive, EVGA GeForce GTS 250 512MB) boots faster. also, performance within programs is poor.

    example: Adobe Indesign 5.5.
AMD Phenom II: loads in 9 seconds.
    GT780DX: loads in 31 seconds.

Indesign on the AMD Phenom II box is MUCH smoother. i have to turn off various graphic features on the MSI just so i don't go nuts.

in theory (and benchmarks), the GT780DX should be killing the Phenom, right?

    any ideas?

Here's a good Comparison Chart of Windows 7 Editions. I'm going through the same decision myself. I need XP Mode for a work application, so it's either professional or ultimate for me. I'm just going with Ultimate because I have the kind of luck that if I chose Professional, some unknown feature lockdown would come back and bite me.

    I also have a GT780DX w/16GB DDR3-1333

I have a Seagate 500GB 7200 in the unit right now and an OCZ 240GB Vertex 3 MAX IOPS SSD.

The Seagate takes 38 seconds from pressing the power button till the Windows 7 x64 desktop is fully loaded.

    Registry cleaned.
    Disk defraged
    CCleaner ran
msconfig-unhecked what's not needed in startup
    indexing on

    The SSD is 14 seconds.

    SSD Tweaker Pro optimized.

I find XP Mode to be very slow and buggy.

IMO it's better to mount a Windows XP virtual drive With Home Premium..

    thanks for checking.

hmmm ... something must be up on my box. should have mentioned that i've defragged my drive as well. couldn't be that the Seagate is 20s faster than my WD at 7200rpm, could it?

WEI gives my HD a 5.9 rating. not sure if that is relevant though.

It does the things that need to be done to optimize a system for an SSD that otherwise would all need to be done manually.

A 5.9 is the highest score any 7200rpm drive can reach.
If you want faster boot time and loading, get an SSD.

5.9 is the WEI score for a regular hard drive. You might either have a drive issue or some other conflict with the install of windows, but it might also be a ram problem. Either way something is not right.

    Regarding Rescue9's overclocking issue with GTX570M 3GB:

turned out the 3GB version's VRAM can't be OC to 1850Mhz, 1637 is the highest it can go, GPU can still be OC to 730MHz.

The Vantage score of 3GB version 730/1637 is similar to 1.5GB version's 717/1870:

Like dragon290513 said it's 2GB. the entire card is made by nVidia so manufacturers are not able to change the VRAM like 560M or 570M.

It looks like MSI really wants to challange the likes of Alienware,Asus and Sager for the leadership role in the gaming notebook market.

Alienware had a big price reduction on Nov 8th for the GTX580M so hopefully the MSI GT780 with the GTX580M will be reasonably priced.Alienware began selling it at just $75 more than the 6990M in the M17x R3. That change in price also lines up with the M18x, where a pair of GTX 580Ms in SLI is $150 more than a pair of 6990Ms in CrossFire.

    thanks you guys.

there *appear* to be no conflicts, as far as Device Manager is concerned. but i uninstalled and deleted the Intel Rapid Storage drivers. rebooted (twice) as Windows did it's thing. then in installed the latest from the Intel site (10.8.0.1003), rebooted.

still no real change that i noticed. then i ran HD Tune. these numbers look respectable to me. what do you guys think?

Something can be running hidden on startup that prevents the final part of the boot where the desktop fully loads.

An AV program can do this.

Can also be software that's slow to load.

IMO it's a software issue and not your hardware.

The way to know is boot time right after a clean install with only the iRST added during the Windows installation and chipset software added after installation completes.

WOOHOO! I'm glad I wasn't losing my mind. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why everyone else was able to run higher clock speeds.

Just for kicks & giggles I ran Vantage with 735/1650, had zero aberration and scored 13892. Probably won't be clocking anytime soon as I don't need to now, but it's nice to have that functionality. Those numbers are with the 290.36 nVidia drivers, and the temps never went over 72C.

In addition, I want to thank Ken for his efforts and dedication to his customers. I challenge you to find better dedication and integrity.

Ahhhhhh, so the card are coming strait from nVidia. Nice, so no partnering OEM HW ID's, or any worries updating to the latest drivers.

Yeah, I also forgot the card was 256-bit rather than 192-bit.

Thanks Ken, reserve me one and let me know the config, price, and ETA as soon as possible!

hey how are you digging the MSE? been meaning to try it for some time. reviews i've come across seem positive.

SUCCESS! sort of. using the newest Intel Rapid Storage drivers (10.8.0.1003), i shaved about 20s(!!) off cold boot to windows desktop. quite surprising. still takes a bit longer for the clock and s-bar and *ahem* Norton's widget to load.

Indesign 5.5 still takes half a minute to load on this box, when an AMD Phenom II with half the ram loads it in 12 seconds, so i'm still trying to figure that out. of course, the Phenom box is not using Norton, so i'm still eyeing that as a potential culprit.

maybe MSE is the way to go?

edit: something must be up. uninstalled Norton, installed MSE Beta 4 (thanks WhatsThePoint for the link) and it took 1:20 to Windows Desktop. go figure.

I am sure you will, enjoy. :)

Glad it's working now and the score looks good too. :) the unit I was testing last night can't go beyond 1637 for the VRAM but I guess it's because not all video cards are created equal.

Yes 580M only coming direct from nVidia. they don't sell just the GPU to manufactures.

    It's reserved per your request.

As long as you registered within 30-day it shouldn't be a problem, MSI people are very nice and flexible. :)

    Hello Ken,
    Long time no see.

Count me in too. I was wondering if 680M is remotely in view. Maybe 3-4 months then I will wait else if it's gonna take 6 months then I will go for 580M.
    Cheers

no! thanks so much for all your suggestions. i'll give this a shot. otherwise, maybe (another) fresh install is in order?

something is really wacky. i just fired up InDesign 5.5 and i loaded in FIVE seconds, when it was half a minute before. maybe i don't understand superfetch/prefetch?

@WhatsThePoint -- are you running the S-Bar application?

Ken,is the AC Power Adapter larger to supply more juice for the GTX580M higher TDP than the 180W that ships with the GTX570M units?
