Quality, contrast and colors (especialy blacks wich are too bright with VLC) are really better with the klite codec pack than with VLC ! Try by youself and you will see.
Klite codec pack got a lot of codecs like VLC.
With Klite codec pack, you are able to install Media player classic but you can also use built-in Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Live Movie Maker and preview fonctionnality of Windows 7 Explorer !
No ugly VLC icon ! -
I tested VLC and Media classic.... but Im going with GOM player... Its really good and have a exelent image quality, plus great quality rendering subs files.
Thanks everyone.
Thanks -

I tried evrything from DVD,CD USB stick connected to different ports (Left right and USB3.0 port) but no success. Changed lots of BIOS options but still it hangs with newer distributions.
Hope that solves your issue.

F0uR1ER said: ↑Yes that is an issue with the new distros based on Ubuntu 11.04 onwards. I suspect it is issue with later Linux kernelversions including 3.0 .I haven't tried other distros except Ubuntu but both 11.04 and 11.10 have exactly the same behavior as you have noticed. The workaround that seems to be working atleast in my case is to first install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS version and then ask it for a distro update. Make sure to install all patches and bug fixes for 10.04 before upgrading to 11.04. Once you have 11.04 you can again upgrade it to 11.10. I know this is cumbersome but that is the only way to get Ubuntu 11.04/11.10 running on the machine. I myself don't know what is causing the new kernels to hang in between. I suspect it is one of the hardware whose device driver is causing this issue. With the Ubuntu 10.04 version the distro uses old binaries and they are updated once you install patches of 10.04 which seems to solve the issue. By the way do not install Nvidia drivers after you install 10.04. Also Wireless is not working with 10.04 (Intel 6230). But with 11.04 onwards you will have the Wireless drivers installed automatically.

1) After BIOS post, press ctrl + I to enter RAID BIOS
2) press 2 to delete RAID
3) press 5 to exit
4) enter system BIOS (delete key) and setup SATA from RAID to AHCI
5) press F10 to save and exit
6) (re)install Windows
I did sort of a carpet-bomb approach, so I know a majority of these are pointless, but here's what I had set for the boot from DVD to work (I assume this works for the newer Ubuntu distros as well, since Mint is built on it):
1) BIOS: (pretty sure these settings are pointless, but it's what I had them set to while dinking around with other commands)
USB Options:
Legacy USB: AUTO
XHCI: Disable
EHCI: Disable
2) Boot off CD, press any key to stop the 10 second countdown. Press TAB, and change the following:
REMOVE: quiet splash (optional)
ADD (before the --): noapic noapci nomodeset acpi=oldboot
I have a suspicion it's just the "acpi=oldboot" that is the magic fix on this one, so someone with more knowledge can chip in at this part.
I can confirm that wireless ethernet adapter AND the webcam work for the install.
------------------------------
Booting into it after install:
uhhh...new problem. Boot fails...not surprised. We need to edit boot options.
Boot normally, and it fails, so you'll have to edit the boot command. Fun stuff:
1) At boot menu, press "e" to edit the boot command.
2) Go down to where it says "linux /boot/vmlin"
3) Remove "quiet splash" (optional)
4) Add "noapic noapci nomodeset acpi=oldboot"
5) press F10 to boot into it. The first time I did this, it actually froze while booting. Did it again and it worked (I might have misspelled something first time)
6) Now you're in!
7) Change the boot permanently: Open Terminal
8) sudo bash
Now, at this point you can edit the existing boot, or make your own script. I made my own since I'm a noob and can't comprehend the existing boot scripts yet. All I did was copy the innards from the boot menu, and added the working options.
9) gedit /etc/grub.d/01_gt780dxr (or whatever your favorite editor is) (you can change the 01 to any number to change the ordering - with it at 01, it comes before the other options in the boot menu)
10) SCRIPT: ("simply" copy what is there in the other script when you press 'e' on boot menu - we're just adding the other options in the linux boot line)
#!/bin/sh -e
echo " am I doing...I hope this works"
cat << EOF
menuentry "Mint 12 - MSI GT780DXR boot options" {

EOF
11) chmod +x /etc/grub.d/01_gt780dxr
12) update-grub
13) exit
14) reboot and pray it somehow works...oh wow it worked
Now I hope some linux script god will reply and tell me I did this all wrong and post an easier way to do this -

thanks to WhatsThePoint!
briefly:
1. clean install of Windows + IRST driver
2. update with Windows Update
3. install drivers
4. install utils
5. install apps
6. defrag/optimize with Auslogics, full scan with Norton
7. be happy
longer story:
first (re)installation of Win7Home64 apparently had issues. i thought Norton was slowing things down, or something else choking performance of my design programs (Adobe Indesign) -- not cool with a 16GB + i7 powering the box. booting was slow. and even turning on wireless networking seemed to take a few seconds. plus Reliability Monitor showed a bunch of processes shutting down during installation of drivers/apps and IE9, or even when turning off bluetooth with the s-Bar.
hardware checks of the WD drives were a-ok. so definitely software.
WTP suggested that i install IRST *first* instead of like, 5th or 6th or whatever MSI suggested in their installation video.
i did that. but installing from the disc/upon boot also resulted in some processes crashing in Windows Reliability. something definitely not happy with the MSI updates/apps.
so i tried it again. IRST first. but the next thing installed was Wireless Networking. made sure Defender and Firewall were on, and then i downloaded and updated all Windows Updates. once that was done, only then did i install drivers, then utilities and my apps.
Windows Reliabilility started at 10, and it's still at 10, days after. no unexplained crashes. plus, boot-up is faster and performance in InDesign is now on par with my other office computer (Phenom II) -- snappy! with nothing turned off. the difference in that program alone is crazy awesome. -

The batteries these days are alot better than a while back.
The main concern would be to those that are always pluged in.The battery should be run down until the popup appears warning to plug in about twice a month.I get the warning with 7% remaining.
Starting with the battery at 100% I can surf the net for just about 3 hours before getting the warning to plug in. -

Hi All!
By way of introductions: longtime lurker, first time poster; gaming enthusiast, (not as much as would like to); built a few desktops, 1st desktop replacement; Aquarius, etc.... <yeah yeah whatever>
Let me just say thank you to all the contributors of this thread, a lot of the info here helped me to finally pull the trigger.
That being said, my "baby" is on the truck out for delivery as I type this! Woot!!! Woot!!! Can't wait to take this puppy out for a test run when I get home.
Specs:
MSI GT780DX-215 | i7-2760QM | GTX 570M | 12GB Kingston HyperX | Intel® 510 Series 120GB SATA III SSD | 50GB SATA II 7,200RPM HDD | 6X Blu-Ray Reader DriveCombo | Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6230 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi + Bluetooth | Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit
Though I've been reading as much as I can, with a thread close to 500pgs long, I obviously haven't read everything (yet - grin). I'm wondering what I should do first with my system? Which drivers to install? What utilities do you guys recommend? Any tests I should do to verify functionality? etc... In short, what's the best way to get acquainted with my new.... well... family member! (heh heh)
I ordered the recovery disks along with my system, but I want to recreate them with all the useful utilities and most recent drivers to really create an awesome "recovery point" for future use, if needed.
So what do you guys think? How do I prep this bad boy for some serious use!
Again thank you for everyone's posts! This thread is great!

Hello, I read the forum alot but did not find any solution which helped.
I have GT780DXR-251RU
It was in a raid and with recovery partition when i bought it.
I deleted raid and make 2 independent hdd`s, intstalled my windows 7 x64 on the first hdd and put my files on the second and was very happy for about 2 month
I do not touched bios, no flash, no firmware changes, even did not entered the bios itself.
One day my laptop stuck at MSI screen with
Press <DEL> to run Setup
Press <F11> to run Boot Menu
Press <F3> to run Recovery
I can only enter the Raid menu when it shows on the screen (Ctrl+I) and after it the screen backs to
Press <DEL> to run Setup
Press <F11> to run Boot Menu
Press <F3> to run Recovery
I removed all the disks (to backup data) and cd-rom, to try without them, but without any result.
I did EC procedures, trying different key combinations (Ctrl+Home and etc) i tryed to make AMIBOOT.ROM and E1761IMS.ROM on fat16 Flash drive.
But without any results. I did not find any recovery procedures for GT780 in the internet.
Please help with the manual. I think service centers have the exact procedure to recover bios ( i hope its a bios )
Or Maybe there is a way to re-create recovery partition to use F3 function?
i did not have any utility wit hte laptop to do this
Thank you forward for your help!!! -

After braking up the Raid array it's good to format all partitions and then delete all the partitions on each drive so you start off with 2 clean drives to install an OS on or use for storage.
Just deleting the Raid array doesn't clean the drives of the files that are on them.
By the time you recieve a new MSI notebook the drivers installed and the ones on the CD are very old.
IMO it's better to do a clean Windows 7 x64 installation with the newest drivers, utilities and software and make a backup if you need one than revovering to an outdated partition.
Most MSI GT780 models ship with WD Scorpio Black hard drives.
WD supplies a free version of Acronis True Image that works for backing up whole disks. All you need is to have 1 WD disk recognized in your system.

WD supplies a free version of Acronis True Image that works for backing up whole disks. All you need is to have 1 WD disk recognized in your system.

Hi,
I know that i broked the raid and i also formated the HDDS ( WD 500GB)
I entered Ctrl+I and change to non-raid mode.
I installed brand new W7 i bought in the shop.
I worked and play for 2 month with this config.
The problem is - my laptop did not boot at all.
I cant even enter bios -

the problem you are having looks like your primary hard drive is bad, maybe you can post a screenshot.Click to expand... -

For anyone who might be interested, I managed to swap out a Synaptics touchpad for the crappy OEM Sentelic touchpad. It works great! It's not an easy mod, and you have to tear you GT780 down to it's guts (violating the warranty), but it is doable.
I use my laptop almost exclusively on my, well, lap. So an external mouse wasn't an option for me. In my 15 years of using laptops, they've always come with Synaptics touchpads. When the GT780 came, I felt crippled having to use the Sentelic pad, and I had to reboot the whole computer a couple of times a day to get the touchpad to stop jumping around. Yes, I tried the latest drivers and registry hacks, but those only seemed to postpone the inevitable daily reboots by a few hours. Besides, my muscle memory is already programed with all the unique to Synaptics proportional horizontal/vertical scrolling, coasting, edge motion, etc - none of which you can do with the Sentelic touchpad.
The stock Sentelic touchpad is based on PS/2, so what you have to do is find an appropriately sized Synaptics PS/2 pad, re-arrange the pins on the connector to comply with the pins on the Sentelic cable stub, install the Synaptics driver, and figure out a way to wipe the grin off your face. I can post more details if there is interest, but it's not a mod for the light of heart.
