LOL, yup. So far none of the copper mod stuff I have done to the GPU heat sink has had any effect, up or down, on the 1080 thermals. I think the heat sink is maxed out. The temps don't even vary more than 1-2°C with different thermal pastes. ICD, Kryonaut, Conductonaut, Gelid GC Extreme and CoolerMaster MasterGel Maker all work basically identical, which tells me the fit and contact are really good and the heat sink is at functional capacity. I think it simply can't get rid of the heat any faster than it does. Normally, there would be a notable gap between those thermal pastes. The only mod that shaved a few degrees off the GPU was the bottom cover mod.

I ordered the cable from a China re-seller took me a while of research to find the correct one for this laptop, screen I ordered from eBay. I ordered the standard one that is sold with the laptop if you buy it with the 4k panel. Over time I am hoping to go with a 2 or 3k panel.
If you would like the model number of the cable I posted them earlier in the thread but it is K1N-3040052-H39
I ordered it from waresphere. I have never ordered from them before and have not received the cable. Nor am I 100% sure this is the correct cable. When it comes in I can let you know for sure though. -
Yes I think you all are right and this has always been the machine I've been eyeing the most and trying to justify spending a little bit more than I had intended to and dealing with the weight and size but I think I will be happy once I make the purchase and have a laptop more powerful than my desktop that I should not have to replace for many years to come, granted that doesn't mean I won't because we all know how this works...
I know this may not be the right place to ask, but any ideas how much I should/could try asking for for my AW in my sig? I'd really like to try and sell this to get some extra cash to put towards the MSI before I make an order, especially if I am getting another DTR pretty much with socketable parts in it. As much as I love that machine and I wanted to keep it, I know this will be a much better replacement for it.syscrusher likes this. -
With the 780M?
Around 600 is what they sell for on eBay.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/322503051449
That one was sold a few days ago.
Alienware have some of the highest resale for gaming laptops on eBay. A monthly store is 20 or 25 if you have an account. Fees with that are 4%. So selling at 600 with a monthly store would be just under 50, without the store they are 10%.
Don't forget PayPal fees also. Selling on here or local may be ideal but eBay would be the quickest(usually)
If you are going to sell on eBay check your messages. My buddies who don't sell get coupons for no final value fee sales all the time... I don't get them because I sell too much haha.Lunatics likes this. -
I would try here first, I sold my Blade on ebay and was not aware that I could do a monthly store as a temporary thing and took the full ebay and paypal cuts, fml. So I am trying to avoid ebay as much as possible and was going to try posting here first.
-
Yeah they bank on people not knowing about it. It use to be only $15. They recently upped it. There is also no penalty for cancelling. They use to pro-rate the month but not any more also. So I create a store on the 1st, then cancel it on the 2nd or 3rd that way I don't have to remember to cancel it later because it does auto bill your account for the next month.
Good luck selling, I myself have not had too much luck selling on here for the prices I want. -
Where on the backside of the motherboard is the PCH located, is it anywhere near the front?

Thank you! So ninja fingers reachable without complete motherboard removal. Nice. What height is that heatsink you have on there?

I did not remove the motherboard entirely, but did have to unscrew everything to lift it up slightly. Maximum heatsink size is 8mm.

Or the internal heat transfer from the GPU silicon to its package substrate is at its limit. Even with an infinite heatsink, the heat transfer from silicon to whatever silicon is touching is proportional to the delta temperature between the two, and the area of contact. A more efficient heatsink downstream basically has the effect of making delta T larger.
<humor_mode>I'm waiting for @Mr. Fox to decide to pump liquid nitrogen through those copper tubes, if they're hollow. (Are they?)</humor_mode>
When I was in college, the fastest Intel-compatible silicon around was the Zilog Z-80A, running at a stunning 4 MHz on all its 8 bits. One of my friends had a custom-built single-board computer with one of those, and as an experiment he submerged it in liquid nitrogen and was able to clock it at 100 MHz for a couple of minutes before it cracked its ceramic package.mizerab1e likes this. -

The new fans on the cooler pad alone can drop the temps, by my estimation, 8 to 10C without engaging the max fans on the computer. Ambient temp during the video was 62 degrees, (16C).Last edited: May 12, 2017hmscott, madeinholt, Mr. Fox and 3 others like this. -

Finally got around to uploading my nvme heatsink pics. Black aluminum spreaders (similar to @Mr. Fox) I saw about a 6 degree improvement in temp over having nothing. I ordered some custom made copper heatsinks for the samsung drives and saw a reduction of 2 degrees over the aluminum ones. Total reduction came in at 8 degrees under full load with crystalmark. I let the laptop hit normal idle temps after about an hour and benched 3x back-to-back on both drives for the test between heatsinks. I believe the reason for the delta is due to the thermal pads on each heatsink. The ones on the copper heatsink are much thicker and of a higher quality.
One thing to note - this did NOT reduce my cpu or gpu temps in any way. It is simply good insurance to prevent throttling on the drives and helps eliminate residual heat around this area of the chasis. Before the mod you could feel it get warm, now I barely every notice it even on low fans. These are 4mm thickness with a 1mm thermal pad for those wondering.

if you do not mind me asking, where did you get the copper sinks from, since you mentioned them.
I'd personally use a mild adhesive and just glue them on closer or directly on the sticks, unless concerned with warranty of course.Huniken likes this. -
I bit the bullet and removed the warranty/manufacture labels on both drives. I got them made from a seller that makes heatsinks off ebay, item #172400986285. Even though from China, I received them in about 5 days total from winning the auction.
These are not individual copper heatsinks that make up one unit, but rather one solid/complete block.Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

Wow, that is loud, a bit like a small plane taking off! It's good that you got a drop in temperatures at idle, what kind of a temp drop do you get at load? -
Props but there is no way in crap I could live with that. Quite honestly, I'd just move back to a desktop if a laptop ever requires that amount of air distribution/cooling.Lunatics likes this.

Ha! Thanks. None of the DTR's I have require this kind of cooling. This is simply another weapon in my OCing arsenal. 200+ Watts of cooling power and I'm not even done yet!

If you have the 120hz display from the factory is it possible to move to the 4k or no since it is 40 pin? Where did you get the necessary cable as well or did it come with the panel?
-
No the 120hz display uses a 30 pin connector( it is what I will be switching from). So your laptop came with a 40 pin to 30 pin cable. You would need to replace thee cable and screen. I purchased the cable from Waresphere but have still not received it.

So, I've been playing with my machine a bit. HID shipped the beast with a 4.7 GHz OC. It was running decent temps on stock voltage. I decided to undervolt. I was able to drop by 90 mV. I played Wildlands for an hour. It seems stable. I know every chip is unique, but what should I expect for an undervolt at 4.7 GHz on an i7700k with a delid?
The performance on this game is all over the place. I decided to run ultra settings and lock it to 30 fps to eliminate stuttering. It runs pretty much rock solid at those settings with some occasional hiccups. I was seeing average temps around 75 C for both processors while the machine sat on my desk in a room temp of about 72 f. My cpu hit a max of 85 C. I think the gtx 1080 hit a max of 75 C. I'll try adjusting the graphics settings to see what it takes to get a stable 60 fps as 30 isn't really pushing the gpu. My fans were at max.Spartan@HIDevolution, mizerab1e and Mr. Fox like this. -
Your temps are really good.
Here's this...
mizerab1e, Papusan and leftsenseless like this. -
Do you have the same performance issue while gaming with other titles, or is it specific to Wildlands only? I noticed some of these games are simply poorly optimized, regardless of the spec. The dektop I built has a 6950x and 1080ti SLI and some games still struggle to keep 30fps in certain areas, so just curious if you are observing similar performance issue with other games as well.Huniken and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

I don't have other games loaded up yet. Wildlands doesn't seem to be optimized the best. Open world games are difficult to smooth out entirely, but GTAV and Horizon Zero Dawn did really great. I can get 60 fps on ultra settings, but it can dip wildly. That causes stuttering. It seems to be their streaming tech because it happens more when I'm driving around.mizerab1e and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

how long ago, like since when have you been waiting for the cable ? -
I really don't mind the sound. I hear it at work. Perhaps I am deaf, hahaha.
With the stress tests I've performed at 4.9Ghz (Aida64/XTU), I have not gone over 65C. That's without using max fans.
I think I can do better and I've been thinking about cutting out three holes in the actual cooler pad in the same fashion that @Papusan did his. This will allow the maximum amount of air to enter the computer.leftsenseless, mizerab1e, Robbo99999 and 1 other person like this. -

Darn it, you're beating my desktop 6700K delidded with Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra! I delidded it yesterday, and today I'm stress testing with OCCT to determine max rock stable overclock, I'm not temperature limited as delidding knocked off 15 degC, but I am voltage limited to 4.7Ghz it seems, unless I want to go over 1.45V! (Looks like 1.376V is stable for me at 4.7Ghz core & cache with max 60 degC, average 53 degC - so definitely not temperature, but surely voltage limited!). Those 7700K's really have an advantage in overclocking! Nice temperatures for you with 65 degC, if you take it off cooler is it much different?
