The GTX 1070 notebook is slower than the desktop version as far as I am aware, even though the notebook version has a few more cores. This is my overclocked Firestrike score of my desktop GTX 1070, I'd be surprised if the notebook GTX 1070 can beat it, but I wouldn't mind seeing it do so if it can: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11520065 -
Well you are pretty much right and i agree with you... but the difference is not that significant
Not my score, but yet pretty close to yours http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11527646
Especially if they find a way to lift the TDP restrictions ... GG
It is revolution. Laptop graphics more powerful than desktop.
And especially with the price of the Tornado ... i would say (as in the NBR review) it gives the similar priced desktops quite a challenge. (The rig from my signature comes at less than 2 000$)
And if you start building a desktop with same components and consider all the small details (e.g. some crappy speakers for 20$, keyboard, mouse, case, monitor, etc. apart from the obvious components, the price comes very close)
In regards to the monitor ... i bought some brand new cheap 24" Acer monitor (refurbished from ebay for 70$ with delivery), despite the fact that i am still temporary in the USA
TBH i couldn't care less for the 15" of the laptop itself (if it is 1080p, 4k, 120hz etc). Just referring to the hot monitor topics. BTW i am pretty happy with the standard 1080p 60hz monitor.Papusan, temp00876 and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -

Question on flashing the new Kabylake BIOS... how does it work if you have a Skylake CPU? I am interested in upgrading my 6600K to a 7700/K. Would I leave my Skylake installed, then perform the flash, then swap to Kabylake?
Or would I swap first -> perform the flash? -

I flashed my laptop to the newer bios 1st, the kaby lake bios. I was waiting for the 7700k silicone to fully cure over night. I still had a 6700 non k, it came with it, installed and work with the newer bios without issues.
I spent more time in getting the bios to install then anything else. I didnt know what DOS commands to input. Thanks to these forums, I found the correct command code and it installed within minutes.
But the major bad news is that the newer bios is still locked to 4.4 on this 7700k. You seem to have the i5 k version, I would not install the newer bios. You might be locked to a certain speed.
tl:dr-I flashed 1st, then installed 7700k. Not worth to flash, bios locked to 4.4.Last edited: Feb 1, 2017keftih, birdyhands and syscrusher like this. -

Now, @Phoenix, you just need to remove the heatsink compound from your GPU, overvolt and overclock it, and put Unigine Heaven Ultra into an endless loop. Then you can pop the corn on your keyboard bezel while watching beautiful graphics. Efficient!Spartan@HIDevolution and birdyhands like this. -
As per @Mr. Fox, there will be another version of the BIOS for the Tornado F5. It can be done, but not using conventional software flashing methods. You'll have to go rabid spider monkey on it's ass because flash protection is a real beee-awwchaah. But, you can always use the "get a bigger hammer" approach. One of the valuable things I have learned from Brother @Prema is, if it doesn't fit... force it. If the OEM Nazi bastards don't like it... screw 'em. My computer, not theirs. None of their bees wax, and the losers that take steps to block us should be ashamed for pretending they have a right to interfere. Their sort of filth has no place in technology and they deserve to be jobless. It should never be this hard, so to those that take delight in shafting us " thanks for nothing" LOL. They need to take lessons from Burger King. We have a right to have it "our way" if we don't like their way.

Hear, hear! I am strongly of the opinion that if I have purchased a piece of hardware, there is no ethical basis for a law or corporate policy preventing me from doing with it whatever I wish.
In fairness, if I open the box and tinker, then I also accept responsibility for my actions and do not feel the manufacturer is obligated to bandage the bullet hole I just placed into my foot.
My gun, my bullet, my foot, my choice, my responsibility.
(EDIT: Originally, this post had a rant about Secure Boot, but I have rescinded that because I learned that it is now possible to self-sign trusted Secure Boot keys, restoring control to the machine owner.)Last edited: Feb 2, 2017deathwingbg, birdyhands and Mr. Fox like this. -
Right on! But, if they get in the way, they deserve to get the bullet. A couple of great big bullet holes... one in the head and the other in the wallet. The only technology filth worse than firmware flash blocking is BGA garbage. Mitigating a "securified" abortion. Yes, guys like @Prema and @t456 are true sources of inspiration. We are the nightmare that the Redmond Nazis lose sleep over, and it's an honor to do everything within my power to defy their intentions.
Nah, it's still unacceptable. Secure Poot, Driver Signature Enforcement and Secure Flash are all Draconian Digi-Nazi filth if you're an enthusiast that wants to actually own what they buy. But, hey... they're making money selling the hype and capitalizing on their fear-mongering.
Not interested in the hassle. Just turn it all off and be done with it.
Yup. Even with the crappy stock BIOS there is an option to turn off that garbage. For now. Once the evil plans of the Redmond Mafia run full circle, that will be gone as well and Class 3 UEFI won't let anything boot that they don't put their blessing on. The only advantage of UEFI is breaking the 2TB MBR partition size limit. Anything beyond that is an abuse of power and all of the rest is a self-serving advantage for the Redmond Mafia in making computers that will boot WINDOWS 8+ only. CLASS 3 UEFI has NO CSM (LEGACY MODE) and therefore will NEVER BOOT ANY OS Other than Windows 8+ unless a company has paid Micro$loth a ransom fee for a WHQL Nazi boot Certificate. And, if Micro$loth strong-arms their subservient drone "partners" as they generally do, we can expect that Class 3 UEFI will not be available with an option to disable Secure Boot, in which case it will be bye-bye Linux and Hackintosh boxes for enthusiasts.
These devil-worshippers are NOT our friends. Windows 10 filth is a sanitized preview of a dark future ahead of us. These control freaks expect us all to fall in line, and with spineless retards representing the majority they will probably get their way. But, we can feel all warm and fuzzie inside because we will be "safe" and not have to fear the digital boogieman any more, with Cortana the digital slut at our side as we play UWA versions of Angry Birds and Candy Crush on our crippled Surface smartphone notebooks.

Come on over to the Linux side of The Force. We have cookies!
Okay, bear in mind I don't speak Windows as my native language... Can I actually just flatten my machine and reinstall Windows 10 Pro on a non-UEFI legacy partition map, and tell Secure Boot to go pound sand? Linux is fine with that, but I have no idea about Micros~1 on physical hardware. Yes, I have some Windows stuff now, but it's on virtual machines.
As an aside, I really wish I could say, "Dude, chill out, it's not that big of a deal..." I wish I could say that, but I can't, because I basically think you're right. I almost never buy DRM laden content. I do not commit piracy, and I deeply resent content providers that preemptively treat me as an aspiring criminal.birdyhands and Mr. Fox like this. -
I love Linux. I have tinkered with it over the years, but it has so many functional limitations in terms of software I enjoy using that switching is not a viable option. I'd like it to be, but until everything I use runs on Linux, I will not be looking to switch. I'd have to do without far too many things I enjoy to do that. Kind of like being addicted to Diet Coke. You know it's not good for you, but you don't want to give it up. You give it up only when you absolutely have to for health reasons. At this point I don't have to, but we're moving that direction, inch-by-inch, with Micro$loth. If I didn't enjoy the Windows software titles (primarily games and benchmarks) I would have switched a long time ago.
Yes, you certainly can. You can use CSM or Legacy BIOS and MBR disks (my preference) and Windows 10 works just as well as it does with UEFI/GPT. The only advantage to using UEFI/GPT is if you have a drive or RAID volume that is over 2TB. Otherwise, you are just wasting drive space on extra system partitions and creating nooks and crannies for WHQL-certified cooties to hid in that you don't even know exist.
I would love to chill out, but it's important to resist the efforts of the evil and awaken others from the slumber that has created the mess that is now status quo. If we pretend it's not a big deal things will only get worse faster. I guess if we all took a que sera sera attitude about the filth that would be tantamount to ripping off a band-aid suddenly to avoid pain as opposed to the agony of peeling it off slowly.Last edited: Feb 2, 2017birdyhands likes this. -

Sure, I can do do a review of my own notebook;it would be centered around personal preferences/opinions as opposed to the more objective tone in professional reviews.
It's hard to bring myself to buy a gaming notebook when I get them frequently for reviews. Whatever I buy would be outclassed within a relatively short period of time, so I'll always feel behind the curve. My definition of depression, lol.

It occurs to me since you live from review notebook to review notebook, you must have a way to quickly come up to working speed on a new one.
Some way of maintaining functional continuity even with the parade of different hardware coming through your offices.
That technical configuration and implementation detail would make an interesting story.
I used to do that myself. My first purchase for portable hardware wasn't a laptop, it was a 600MB harddrive - a 5.25" Micronet - a big sucker $3500 back then - that I could carry back and forth between my desktop and theirs.
At one point I finally decided I could get enough internal storage in a laptop, and bought one to carry myself into client sites along with their desktop - then they started giving out laptops - and I carried 2
When are you going to get one for yourself?
This 16L13 seems like a good one, or maybe the "17L14", the 17.3" version will do it for you (and me).

I was only half serious. I'm in the same boat as you, actually, although for me the reason is tools that require DX11, not available in a Windows VM with a Linux physical host. That's what pins me to Windows now, but I am seriously looking at a dual-boot setup here, and hoping to gradually migrate. Give me DX11 support in a Windows VM with a Linux host, and my single boot o.s. will be Linux.
I would even tolerate slower gaming, because I don't play competitive shooters (mostly just RPGs and puzzlers), and also because virtual machines are getting closer and closer to full-native performance if you run full screen. Heck, my Elder Scrolls modding right now is Windows 10 in a virtual machine on a Macbook Pro, 2.8 GHz CPU and GT650M GPU. If I can live with that, equivalent setup on my new 16L13 is going to feel like heaven.
Things are -- slowly -- looking up in the games, though, because engines like Unity (the one I use) make cross-platform builds much more feasible. Go out on Steam and look how many of the new games have native Linux versions. Some of the AAA titles are not there yet, though, and my "Diet Coke" (to use your analogy) is Elder Scrolls.
My primary SSD will be nominally 2 TB (Samsung 960 Pro NVMe). If I do this, I'll carve out a 100 GB or so system partition and let the rest be my data partition.
Yep....as I said, I only wish I could disagree with you, but in fact I agree.
The other hot-button issue for me is disk encryption. Linux has very strong encryption. I don't completely trust the crypto on either OSX or Windows. Opaque algorithms are not what you want in security software. -

Wow, yes, that's a good GPU score, so in that result the notebook 1070 beat my desktop 1070, but only by 2%, and if you look at the graph showing the spread of results in similar systems then that particular notebook result was way out in front on it's own (just the one result). So, I'm pretty sure that typically the notebook 1070 is gonna be slightly slower than desktop 1070, even when overclocked. Notebook 1070 still a great card of course though! (this is just a continuation of a discussion pages earlier where woodsatz said that notebook 1070 was getting better performance than desktop 1070's.)
Good scores, and I think these would be more typical results of a notebook 1070 overclock (18000'ish on the GPU score).syscrusher likes this. -

Maybe, but almost certainly not in notebooks which are thin & light where they can't keep it cool. Either way it's wrong to say that the notebook 1070 is faster than the desktop 1070, on average the desktop 1070 is faster. Also, when both notebook & desktop 1070 are overclocked to max and compared (on average) the desktop is likely to be faster. Also, we've just been comparing my own overclock, but some other people's desktop 1070's are bound to be faster, I don't have a perfect example of a 1070. (Also, my overclock is 100% rock stable, I can go a little higher for a benchmark run; and lastly the performance is stable at that high level over a gaming session because the card stays 'very cool' over hours & hours). (I used "also" WAY too much, don't write after a gaming session, brain is in SIMPLE mode!)cavell219 likes this. -

That's fine, my main point is based around a comment woodsatz made earlier, he said "The 1070 we get in this laptop performs better then the higher tier MSI 1070 desktop cards they have". I was just pointing out that this is unlikely and a misleading statement really. I understand your point about extreme cooling, but that's not the norm, (and besides the score you linked wasn't a Tornado). I guess it would be good to see some Tornado 1070 scores in the 21000 zone, let's wait & see - post up your scores people!
(This is the highest I can get my desktop 1070 for a single benchmark run, the absolute limit & it's not stable over long periods: 21365 ( http://www.3dmark.com/fs/11593463). (Rock stable indefinitely is lower at 20982 for me).Last edited: Feb 2, 2017hmscott, Papusan, Rage Set and 1 other person like this. -
Gaming on anything smaller than 24" is something I truly hate to the core lol.
Tops I used the internal screen for , is render previews and a few videos here and there. -
The GTX1070 on laptops has more cores, and I believe TMUs, and is simply clocked lower. A non power limited GTX1070 laptop GPU does have more potential than a desktop variant. But this will only happen in a handful of laptops that sport robust cooling solutions etc. Power limited machines will not reach their full potential.
