Yep, I'm aware of the more cores thing. Hey, as a challenge I'd like to see some Tornado 1070 owners try to achieve 21000 GPU score, folks need to post up some overclocked scores! :) Tornado 'should' be one of the ones that can crack that mark hopefully, an enthusiast notebook - hopefully you won't need an unlocked BIOS/vBIOS to achieve that, but let's see what folks can post up here.

That's a key point. If all somebody cares about is being on the 3Dmark leaderboard, then they might push their system beyond stable limits just to run up the score. When you get down to a percent or two difference, you won't even notice that in a game anyway.

I want my system to perform well, but there's no way I'm going to waste my time with frequent reboots, and also risk data loss (NTFS is journaled but not immune), just to get a tiny performance bump that I won't even perceive in a game or one of my 3D content tools.

You got a great score, and you did it in a stable clock/power setting. EPIC WIN!

lol you guys talking about benchmark scores and who scores higher and whatnot while I'm just still trying to get gta 4 to run without stuttering every damn second. My goal is smooth gaming at okay looking graphics but the main reason i bought this is to enjoy my games so I'm not really interested in cores and 2 points over desktop or laptop score like wth does that mean? >+< lol ;)

GTA 4 is crappy when it comes to optimization. i can run gta 5 4k 70+ fps ultra yet gta 4 runs with crazy stutter fest.

I ran gts 4 on a 970m and it still stuttered. Ran it on this 1070 and same thing. You wont get any help at all cuz its a newer gpu, the entire game is trash. I mostly stopped playing it after a few months. I played it the other day for 30min and nothing has changed.

You are better off trying to find that magic unicorn.

I think it was a problem with the high quality textures not optimized right because I turned off everything and left the screen at 1080p and it runs smoothly. It may not look the best but I still enjoy jt

Wow once I raised the fps limit from 60 to 200 in rivatuner, most of the stuttering is gone from beamng drive. I never would have thought

Usually I need to set RTSS to Refresh +/- 1 = FPS to get a steady no tearing in some games. Sometime's setting FPS rate right at Refresh rate, like 60hz = 60 FPS isn't steady.

You might try 59 FPS or 61 FPS and see if that works. That would be less load on the system, rendering and dumping 200 FPS over 60hz.

For G-sync enabled you want to limit FPS to -1 of Refresh, or 59hz with refresh at 60hz.

Will your display panel run at higher refresh, or is it only stable at 60hz?

For a 15.6" display, they usually don't OC far, like 63hz/64hz, so try it in +1 increments.

The display will flutter or break up with dots / line, or it simply will go black and not sync at the higher rate.

The Nvidia control panel will have saved the custom setting, but it won't commit it at that setting until you confirm it - so don't hit the Return key while it's black :)

Wait 30 seconds and see if it flips back ok on it's own, otherwise use the power button to power off, wait a couple of seconds and then power back on.

Once booted you can delete the last set Custom setting, and then use the previous one.

When you save it in the Custom settings dialog, it should then show in the normal dialog - where you select resolution - it turns the HZ menu into a list which will include your custom settings.

Try exiting the Custom dialog after saving the new entry, then exit the Nvidia normal dialog, then reopen it and pick the Resolution from the normal resolution list, then click on the drop down HZ menu to select 64hz.

Fixed it. For some reason it wasn't allowing me to select 64hz so I created 63hz and that worked and then I reapplied the 64hz and it worked :)

If 64hz is finicky like that, maybe run 63hz, as that's what most people report as being stable for 15.6" displays.

Many 17.3"/18.4" panels will be happy at 100hz, but 63hz is about where the 15.6" panels settle.

At 64hz you'll need either 63, or 64, or 65 FPS set in RTSS, at 63hz either 62, or 63, or 64 FPS set in RTSS :)

For G-sync, you want HZ - 1, for 64hz it would be 63 FPS.

It has nothing to do with the screen size. I initially replaced my IPS G-Sync 15.6" panel with a Samsung PLS 15.6" panel and it overclocked to 103Hz. I ran it daily at 95Hz for "safety" after initially deciding on 97Hz. Of course now I have a REAL 120hz panel. :D

Of course it's the specific make / model of display that sets the range of OC available, but in general most people find their 15.6" laptop doesn't go past 63hz, and I don't have a specific make / model number 15.6" display that I know for sure goes to 100hz.

What make / model laptop and panel is / was it?

This specific model is known to go to 90-100+ Hz easily for the 15.6" inch. http://www.panelook.com/LTN156HL02-201_Samsung_15.6_LCM_overview_24407.html

Also just because those 17 and 18" laptops are doing 100Hz doesn't mean the response time is there to fully take advantage of it.

    Same for the 15.6" 100hz :)

For my eye's the 100hz OC on the 17.3" and 18.4" screens I've had were great, no smearing or ghosting.

Like most visual things, if it bothers you - you don't like it - change it, otherwise enjoy it and don't worry about the numbers.

Nah it won't do G-Sync but I paid $30 for it on eBay, and for some the panel would be excellent if they're on a tighter budget. Overclocking the display certainly makes a difference and was noticeable for me as well. It's just that when I got this 120Hz native display it was like night and day difference. Like playing on my desktop.

Yup, the TN panel is much faster response time, a difference you'll notice, but not when you don't have a reference for comparison ;)

    It's a nice panel.

Hopefully the IPS (-like) fast panels from the desktop will reach the laptop sizes soon.

You can get them from certain suppliers or get them from ebay. No point getting them from ebay at this point because they are now officially released and should be able to get them more direct.

I'd definitely like to see how far you could push your 1070 if you manage to get hold of an unlocked vBIOS - even though I don't own a Tornado notebook I'm following this thread because I like the enthusiast nature of this laptop and I'm interested to see what it can do!
Totally agree, get the high refresh rate screens like 120Hz people, you won't regret it! I couldn't believe the difference in gaming experience going from a 78Hz overclocked laptop panel to a 144Hz panel when I got my desktop, it really is night & day in terms of how much detail you can see & make sense of on the screen during fast paced games like fps shooters - my ranking increased in Titanfall really quite significantly as a result (from Diamond 2 to Diamond 5). It's also just a lot more enjoyable & immersive.

Thanks for testing it. Sounds like it was an easy swap. Mine will come from HIDevolution with it installed, but I'm still hoping down the road we get better panel options for color accuracy with the 120hz.

Well, this morning I finally got my backup Tornado F5 put back together after repasting. So far the temperatures have been great, here are some wPrime results:
    Code:
    wPrime 1.55 hwbot.org / hwinf064 5.42 3050
    win10pro 64-bit 1607 14393.693 / auto fans
    -----------------------------------------------
    delidded | Yes | No |
    core temperatures | 83/82/80/81 | 96/95/95/97 |
    core throttling | N/N/N/N | Y/N/N/Y |
    32M | 5.246 | 5.3 |
    1024M | 160.839 | 162.091 |
    -----------------------------------------------

So overall it feels like a great improvement. The actual delid process took quite a bit of time for me. I wanted to superglue to IHS back onto the processor, but the superglue had not cured after two hours when I pulled the delid tool back apart, so I had to find some acetone (note: odorless mineral spirits are useless for cleaning superglue) then redoing the whole process the next night. I let the superglue set overnight the second time and it worked great.

Now, to just do the same process on my second 6700K. Or should I go ahead and replace it with a 7700K? Decisions...

edit: Added "auto fans" detail to results

I'm quite surprised to see that your wprime scores are pretty much the same both before & after delid, especially as you got throttling with the non-delid. The temperatures are definitely a lot lower with the delid though, so that should open up your 6700K to overclocking (or further overclocking).

First message here.... I finally caught up reading this entire forum. What a great place..... you guys are so knowledgeable.

I placed an order for the TF5 quite some time ago with an agreement with sales to hold up on shipping my unit until they had the 120Hz panel option ready to go. Today I received an update from Eurocom explaining that several BIOS updates that have been tried have failed to control the brightness feature of said panel. They advised that the mfg techs have tried and failed and are not going to put any further effort into it but that Eurocom R&D will continue working on it.

The question I was asked is if I wanted to go ahead and receive the TF5 with the 120Hz panel with no brightness controls as of now or opt for the 60Hz panel.

@Talon Is the dimming scheme that you are using with your 120Hz panel easy enough on the eye and work well?.....keep in mind these retinas here are older as I have about a year on Mr. Fox.

@cavell219 @woodzstack @Talon I know you all are familiar with this so I was wondering what would you guys or anyone else recommend? The 60Hz or the 120Hz? I am finally upgrading to a fast notebook and am wanting to future proof as well as I can. Price between the two wouldn't matter. I game a little, surf, and do a lot of video editing/encoding.

The news of the mfg dropping out on the fix was not exactly good to hear but then again I don't know how these situations work......was good to hear Eurocom R&D will stay on it. As this is one of their best in their lineup, I would bet they will figure it out. (Same panel??? in the X4E2 with GTX 1060 or 1070 works)

    Any input appreciated.

It sounds the Chimei N173HHE-G32 (in the GT73VR) is where its at if you want the 120hz and the best balance of color accuracy and gamut. You may even get G-Sync support! The Sharp and AUO 4k panels are much wider gamut and even better accuracy, though you would be limited to 60hz refresh rate.
These are actually two different machines. The primary machine (not delidded yet) also has 32GB of ram instead of 16GB so I think the timings may be different. Those temperatures are with stock voltage and auto fans. The throttling bit did not stay on all the time, after it started happening, the EC kicked the fans to the next level which helped it cool back down a bit (94C!). Also, the system actually runs quieter with the delidded processor, which is a very pleasant benefit!
Its too bad I do not have one of these panels, or I would contact Eurocom about signing an NDA and trying to get the 120hz panel brightness controls working. I would even do it for free in my spare time, this kind of stuff is fun for me!

First off, welcome to the forums and thanks for taking the time to read up. :)

For the panel I have the 120hz installed and running and it is pretty darn bright.. I have not been able to dim it with any utilities, but I have not gone very in depth. I have been using F.LUX to add a blue hue to the colors which gives the illusion of dimming, it helps alot.

I will look into brightness controls a little more now that I know Eurocom was unable to achieve it. Not a good sign for G-sync either..

Color wise on the 120hz panel, it's kinda eh.. Whites have a yellow hue, and black/gray uniformity are not the best. Refresh rate and gaming wise it is great, but I would not recommend it if you need color accuracy. Positive here is, it literally takes 2 minutes to replace the panel if you are not replacing the cable. So I still have the 60hz panel here, while having the 120 in.

I can see banding on the display in smoke in games but that is about it.

This laptop is very future resistant by being able to accept 40 pin(supposedly) eDP displays as well as the stock 30 pin. I plan in the future to try a couple other panels and hopefully get a hold of the 40 pin cable and try other 40 pin displays but that is farther down the line.

I would highly recommend the laptop, especially with a delidding if you can. I ordered mine from @woodzstack got a great price and a great laptop with minimal work done on my end(Which kinda upset me as I like to build mine :), Woodzstack did a great job! ).

You can get the panel for 110 on ebay :) , I have never really worked on this before but I am always willing to try something new with programming so I am gonna do some research.

In a reply to my last post, I totally forgot about using NV control panel for "brightness" It basically does what f.lux does on a larger scale. I have found a decent setting to be upping the contrast 10% and lowering the brightness to 30%. It retains a fairly accurate color ratio and is much easier on the eyes.

You could test with maxed fans. Test also with Cinbench R11.5 and R15.

Regarding new i7, I would go for 7700K. Also a better choice if you don't want to overclock.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think that is only for 17in. I looked into getting a Clevo P775 before ordering my EVOC but I decided against it for a few reasons, though the 3K panel was appealing. I will just stick with the screen HIDevolution gives me until something significantly better comes along. I considered the LG and Samsung panels but I don't like ghosting or slow response times, so I think this is the best choice for me at the moment.

edit: Dang that news from Eurocom about the brightness controls is actually disheartening. I'm wondering what the situation with mine will be.

edit2: Going to contact them to see if this is the case.

So the issue turns out to be SSD and it should be fixed.

    Waiting @woodzstack to ship it.

Does the NV control panel retain any new settings one applies upon a reboot or do they have to be manually applied each time?

So to clarify, the only means you have to control the brightness is the nVidia Control Panel or F.lux? The built-in Windows brightness control just doesn't do anything?

Correct. Windows brightness controls do not work. But I have found that the update in Nvidia I made ~an hour ago or so is a really good sweet spot for my eyes. I seldom change my brightness anyways.

And to clarify with F.lux you aren't changing the brightness but instead adding/changing the Hue.

With Nvidia you aren't truly changing the backlight brightness either but instead of the colors. But compared to f.lux the colors stay more true to life.

If you're serious about smoothness in games and play first person shooters, especially online I would recommend the 120Hz display hands down. Not only for that I find it makes using Windows daily tasks that much more enjoyable. Windows move smoothly around the screen and text is quickly visible even when scrolling quickly. The 60Hz G-Sync screen is also very very good IMO, but if you've ever used any high refresh rate screens it leaves something to be desired. The TN 120Hz screen while a very very good TN, it still isn't quite as good as the IPS 60hz, and the IPS would be better for professional work no questions asked.

For me not having brightness controls isn't a very big deal after using FLUX and using the color profiles I've found. I've also started testing a few Asus color profiles which also use the same 120Hz panel. One in particular from Asus reduced the insanely white/bright look and gives the illusion of lowered brightness like FLUX but less yellowed. With all of this considered the panel is very bright which is excellent for many games where you may encounter darker areas on traditional laptop displays.

If you plan to use your laptop for primarily entertainment and gaming I would get the 120hz panel.

Actually that was inconclusive. We only kept having the issues with the SSD, but the SSD was not producing any issues or events. We have not 100% proved it was the SSD, because ti appears BF1 is more the culprit than anything
But it does explain why I couldn't reproduce the issue easily anywhere else.

oh yeah, it's really nice and smooth, I agree.

And the brightness, to me was not an issue.

HiDevolution also offers the 120Hz panel, are they having the same brightness problem or did they fix it? I do know it doesn't support G-Sync yet.
