Hello, I'm new in this forum, I created the account to ask this, and keep coming back to the community, ok now to the problem, I realized that my MSI GE62 2QD Apache Pro It's not using the dedicated GPU to run games, and games like Bioshock (the 1rst one), Max Payne 3 and NFS: Most Wanted run very very choppy and with unplayable FPS, its there any way to make the notebook use de dGPU to run every game installed in the computer?, I tried doing the "NVIDIA Control Panel" way and it didn't change anything, what can I do?. Thanks in advance (sorry for my english it's not my 1rst tongue)

Using a unattended install, I set my user profiles in the HDD instead of SSD, but this only worked for Win 7 and 8. For Windows 10 that didnt work, thought there is another way I didnt test:

    http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1964-users-folder-move-location-windows-10-a.html

If you dont want to reinstall, you can try this:

    http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-change-your-default-save-locations-windows-10

Then for some extra GBs,I recommend you to do this:

    http://www.download3k.com/articles/...to-another-drive-in-Windows-8-8.1-or-10-00430

Start from the section that says " Moving Swapfile.sys to another location/drive"

    And lastly, this:

Huh, forgotten a long time - getting rid of old Nvidia drivers freed about 15 GB on my system drive and the backup clone drive.

Does anyone use an external monitor for their GE62? I have one with a 970m and I just ordered a 144hz screen for games like Rocket League and Overwatch. Depending on my settings, I can pretty easily hit 120+ fps, but I also never thought to consider that having a second display might put more stress on the GPU. Does anyone else use a similar setup? Are there any dips in performance since my laptop will now be displaying 2 images?

Im not expert, but you should have the same performance as long as you're playing the game in just one monitor, and not on both at 3840x1080

Hey guys just picked up a pretty good deal on a GE62 last week at my local micro center.

    $999 plus tax got me:

    i5 6300HQ
    970m 3gb
    8gb 2133 DDR4 --- Already upgraded to 2x8gb 2400mhz Hyper X
    256gb SSD M.2
    IPS Screen in my sig

It's an amazing deal for this perf IMO. I know Pascal laptops are about to drop but I wanted something in the interim until the GT62 releases. I am serioulsy impressed with how well this laptop performs and cools. Only issue I've noticed and seems to be a problem with a few of these laptops is the buzzing/coil whine from the GPU while under load. I was able to minimize that though by disabling the C states in the BIOS.

I've unlocked my 970m and currently have it overclocked to +400mhz on the memory and +213mhz on the core for an nice even 1250mhz core clock. Haven't had a single crash and runs very cool under load on stock voltages.

I had the Dell i7559 with 960m before and that for the price was the best laptop for the money, but this deal easily beats that now IMO.

It has a usb 3.1 type c adapter, but I can't find anywhere if it also support thunderbolt? Maybe for an e-GPU in the future? Anyone know if it has the ability?

I think I have read that it indeed is thunderbolt compatible but I am not 100% sure.

As for the coil whine, it's funny that you mention it because in my case it depends on the game. Witcher 2 causes a massive coil whine for me that is almost unbearable haha. Its nice you managed to keep it down, but since I only experienced it with that particular game, I never tried to get rid of it.

After a little more research, it's capped at 120hz at 1440p, and looks like it might be the same at 1080p. Thanks for your response though!

How do you check your screen model? And how did you unlock your 970m, with custom BIOS from Svet?

Unlocked 970m with Svet at MSI forums.

You can check the screen model number by looking at the part number in HWInfo64 or by physically taking the screen apart. The part number matched exactly and I did a side by side comparison. Same panel.

Trying to solve a friend's problem.

He just bought an MSI GE62.

The sound only comes out of one speaker on some YouTube videos through Firefox. It's an oddly specific problem, but it's a problem since he pretty much only watches YouTube videos all day and Firefox is his favorite browser.

Using a USB sound card alleviates the problem, so clearly it's a problem with the MSI's built-in sound card. (The videos play fine with Chrome). So what gives? Is this fixable? Does anyone else have this problem?

I was having random crashes lately, and today my laptop died. Is out if warranty so I cant RMA.

The screen stays black,it doesnt even reach the MSI logo, thought the power led, they keyboard backlight and the coolerboost work fine.

I tried turning it off and on with the power button pressed, with a paperclip for resetting the EC, I opened the laptop and disconnected the battery for some minutes, removed the RAM stick, but still nothing.

    What else can I try?

Can you connect an external monitor to it? If you have no video no the external, the laptop isn't POSTing, meaning you have some component that has failed.

Also, try booting off of one memory module at a time.

    Hi, I own a GE72 6QF Apache Pro.

I'm having a few questions about my monitor because I'm not quite content with it, when everyone seems to love the monitor so much.
It just seems glaringly bright to me, and very hard to be content with the tuning.

My default MSi True Color settings is Gamer with:
    -100% Brightness
    -0 default for everything.

Every other setting seems to be too bright, too dim, color unbalanced and such.

I've ran an Android game on an emulator, and the colors were off. It is definitely not normal when the most ideal look would be how it is on my phone and how it was on my previous Alienware m17x r3 laptop.

Is this normal, or is my monitor just screwed up or something?

EZ fix. Open up the bottom of the laptop again and this time remove the battery and AC power. Then take the CMOS battery out (looks like a watch battery). Wait about 1 minute or so and then put it back it and attach the battery. Connect the AC cord but don't close the laptop up just yet. Put it on its side and stand it vertically so the fans don't hit anything and turn it on. If all is well go ahead and button her back up after powering down.

I tried with an external monitor, but no signal. I tried removing the RAM stick (I only have 1), but still the same.
I tried something similar, just that I disconnected the CMOS battery for less time, but I will try again.

Just to be 100% sure, this is what you are refering to, right?:

So I decided last week I was going to update all my drivers together. So I proceeded with the downloads of all of them. I started to install the chipset 10.1.1.8 for windows 10 and it blue screened into an error. I can't remember the error code but ill go blue screen myself after and add it to my post. -_- So after the blue screen it restarts me right back into my desktop with no problems that I can see. I retried the install a few more times using run as admin, closing out all background processes, booting in safe mode which wouldnt even let the program run at all. I even re downloaded the driver directly from the Msi support page. If anybody knows what might be happening please help! I cant use a lot of utilities now and my bluetooth still doesnt work (reason for wanting to update all drivers)

    EDIT: error: WDF_VIOLATION
I looked up fixes for it last time but only found that its caused by trying to install the wrong driver. So maybe MSI posted wrong driver...

Did you get the driver from the correct GE62 download page? Since there are different versions of that model, like the 6QD, 6QF, 6QE, you want to check your serial number and get the drivers from the right page. You could try getting drivers from the manufacturer's site as well.

Guys I bought a MSI GE62 6QD and a samsung evo 850 m.2, my computer already came with W10 could you teach me how to install it in my new SSD ? (I didnt installed anything in the laptop yet)

Do I have to do a clean install of the W10 with a bootable usb or clone the HDD is better ?
If its better doing a clean install, whats softwares will I lost ?
Should I use the MSI Burn Recovery for that or the MS Media Create Tool is a better choise ?

    Hi guys !
I recently bought a new MSI GE62 6QF Apache Pro. I have two serious problems. The first one is that it has pretty bad fps in Diablo 3(60-80 on high settings), when i was having 100+ fps on my 4 year PC. Also in Overwatch I have something around 80-90 fps on Ultra settings, which is ok. The thing is I want to get 140+,fps, because of my 144hz monitor, so I am using the lowest settings possible and I am still getting around 90-100 fps in quick play. It is really weird, because I had about 140 on the same settings on my old PC with 7870 HD graphics.
The second problem is that i don't really know how to connect my 144hz monitor. HDMI is only capable of 60hz and when i try DVI to Mini Display Port, which should give me 120hz with FULL HD resolution, it is stuck at FULL HD 60hz.

If you have any ideas how to solve any of these two problems, please let me know. Thanks!

If it's driver you were talking about then the answer is no, it will not brick the laptop but the OS may crush if wrong driver is used.
Also, there's no gain for you even if you update it to the latest and greatest.

I mean the firmware, not the driver. It shouldnt brick it,doesnt it? But im not sure. When my laptop started failing, one of the last resorts I did was update the MEI firmware. I rebooted twice, laptop apparantly was working fine (it started failing/working again without doing anything, so it could have been a concidence). then I ran MSI calibration utility, and when it was about to finish. The laptop powered off, and it was completely broken (what I mentioned few pages ago).

If it's firmware then you can't really update it since that region is possibly locked.

That area is part of the BIOS, but BIOS update always skips that segment.
MSI will only override such if there's a major issue with ME.

Anyone with GE62 and GE63VR in conus...I ordered a black leather (faux) full body wrap (precut) but it must have come through mordor because it just got here and I went with a Sager.

Anyone who wants it can have it if they're gonna use it! Does more good than sitting in a box here wasted.

Since 1060 mobile was disappointing in terms of price, i think i will be buying msi ge62 6qf with 970m. I will replace 128gb ssd with a 500gb 850 evo but I also want to replace the paste. I know the gpu and cpu are bga, but I dont have much information about "bga". Does this mean that I cannot replace the thermal paste?

And this has optimus, right? (yea, I want optimus. Screw me, right? I am also fine with bga, i wont change the gpu anyway! Spending so much time in 10xx and it kinda makes me hate my future laptop....)

GE62 has optimus only and no mux switch. BGA means cpu and gpu are on motherboard itself not replaceable so you can repaste no problem

If your buying one I have stuff for it i dont need if you wanna protect new baby :) its from CN so no use returning it for refunds... Tpu kb protector and pleather skin all at cost of nil

    Some questions,
I've noticed that for some reason my Ge62pro would keep up waking itself up from sleep mode after a while, seemingly randomly.
Which was an issue as I often carry my laptop around in a bag and it turning itself on would result it in becoming very hot and draining battery.
Recently I found out that that turning off "hibernate after" setting in power options seems to prevent the problem, as hibernating normally also causes the pc to turn itself back on.
Also recently I purchased a samsung m.2 850evo SSD and installed it, however now my trackpad is burning hot at almost all times.
Becoming aware of the temperatures I also decided to check around to see if my other temps are working fine.

    Which leads into my questions:
Does anybody know what could be causing the hibernate to not work?
Is the high heat of the trackpad normal? is there any way to reduce it a bit? Using HWMonitor both the stock SSD and 850Evo seem to be hovering between 40-45degrees. The HDD also feels quite hot sometimes, however that one cools down when I turn on the fans to max.
Looking at my cpu, even at low ultilization (10%~) the temperature rises to 60-65, and with the fan on max it only goes down to around 55%, is this normal for this laptop?
And finally, is it possible that the overheating caused by it turning itself on in the bag has lead to the thermal paste going bad, causing the above problems?
    thank you in advance.

edit: is it possible to manually force off the nvidia gpu? it sometimes goes on for seemingly no reason and the only reliable way to get it off is fully rebooting the computer

Firstly double and triple check you have latest bios.

The new SSD is m.2? If it is you can buy copper stick on pads on amazon for like 8 bucks but 40c range is totally normal on those. As for the CPU and gpu i think you should repaste... Buy some mx4, IC diamond or kryonaut (do not buy as5, or TG1/2/3 or stuff like the TIM at bestbuy) if you have a radioshack nearby and want local they sell Ceramique 2.

MSI stock paste is soso and if your not running skylake model its about time.

For GPU...why disable it? In Nvidia control panel go to 3d settings and in general application settings instead of automatic select the iGPU so stuff like browsers and skype etc aren't using the main gpu for acceleration then for your games you can set it back to nvid card on per application basis

    Thank you

I guess that means the problem is that for some reason the laptop design has the SSD slots right under the mouse pad, then...
how much difference would the copper pads make tempuraturewise?

Is it possible that the high temperatures would have had an effect of the degrading the stock paste?

The reason why I want to force gpu off is that sometimes it randomly goes on for no reason and refuses to go off again.

Hi I just opened up my ge62 6qd apache pro to clean the fans (I just blew air into it). I also took out the battery but didn't do anything with it so I just put it back in. when I put it back together the screen won't turn on but everything else will. I wonder what the problem is?

Did you use compressed air can and how far away? Besides checking connections compressed air is not good idea for internals because too close and it can do harm.

Did you disconnect anything inside, such as a ribbon connector?

Has anyone gotten the BIOS thing to swap the windows key working? I've got the original version if that makes any diff. Tried BIOS updates etc. No luck. I really don't like the win key on the left so hopefully something is able to help.

EDIT: Got it. I had tried bios updates etc but didn't realize there was an EC update. Did that and it fixed it.

Thinking of trying out the heatsink idea but, would that actually help with cooling down the mousepad too, or just the ssd itself?
Furthermore, is it possible to easily remove whatever adhesive used to attach them?
And lastly, would these actually be able to fit? the 2 side ssd's seem to be blocking the space to put them on the middle one, and the side ones themselves might end up having the sinks touching the casing, I feel.

Might want to replace the current thermal compound with something like IC Diamond or Gelid GC Extreme if you're going to be doing any gaming, or anything intensive (you'll have to take the entire bottom cover off if you do, though). Other than that, just remember to install your chipset driver first after Windows installation is done. Enjoy it! It's a great little laptop for its price.

    Arctic Silver 5 AS5-3.5G Thermal Paste https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OGX5AM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ydt3xb9NX4JQT

I have this. I used it 3 times. How many more times can i use? I bought it purely from amazon reviews.

Also how should i apply the paste? Always conflicting answers, in the internet and forums. For cpu and gpu, should it be "pea" or "line"?

I think Windows update now handles a lot of things automatically driver-wise but I will still check it from msi's driver website.

I picked up a GE62-2QE (i7-4720HQ, 965m) quite a many months ago but did not actually start using it until a few days ago. I'm trying to make sense of the driver versions that came installed and what the latest ones are now, since I'm considering doing a clean install of Win 8.1. I've burned recovery DVDs, but the laptop did not come with a driver/utility disc so I don't have copies of the older drivers to install in case I start fresh. As a result I'm leaning toward just uninstalling some of the bloat (Norton, Winzip, XSplit Gamecaster, MSI Social Media Collection, MAGIX MX Suite, Cyberlink PowerDVD) to be safe, since I don't know what issues might be with newer drivers.

(If anyone is curious, no I did not reserve an upgrade to Win 10 on this machine, and a big reason for deciding to keep it was needing a new laptop but wanting a 7/8.1 system.)

Here's what's available on MSI's support site for the 2QE (Win 8.1). I've included the Win 7 driver versions as well, just for comparison (ver - date - size). Bold red text show's differences between Win 7 and 8.1 drivers.

And here's what came installed on my system (excluding VGA drivers which would obv. be outdated)

Intel(R) Management Engine Components 10.0.31.100 - is this the chipset?
Intel Rapid Storage Technology 13.5.0.1056 - old? or newest one for 8.1?
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver 6.0.1.7388 - old
Qualcomm Atheros Killer Performance Suite 1.1.48.1060 - old
Realtek Card Reader 6.3.9600.39062 - old
    Intel PROSet/Wireless Software 17.13.2 - old
Synaptics Pointing Device Driver 18.1.30.4 - old (matches Win 7 ver which has older date)
    KB9X Radio Switch Driver 1.1.0.0 - same
    Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)(patch version 17.1.1440.2) 17.1.1409.0486 - old

My biggest question is, why doesn't the 8.1 driver page have downloads for IRST? It just has the file for loading the IRST driver during OS install. But if I check the support page for the GE62 2QD model, the IRST driver is there for Win 8.1. Could that same one be used for a clean install, since it matches the one my laptop came with? It seems like MSI's support pages are poorly maintained. For example, the offered Win 8.1 chipset for the 2QE is nearly 2 years old, but Win 7 has newer ones.

For which drivers does the different OS actually matter? My guess would be the chipset, but I'm not sure about the others. I know the Radio Switch is not applicable in Win 7 and Win 8 has native USB 3.0 support. The Management Engine for Skylake is irrelevant on my model (Haswell) but no idea why it's there for Win 7 on the same Haswell model. Otherwise the various discrepancies confuse me a little (I was also considering installing Win 7 instead of 8.1).

Aside from drivers, my laptop did not come with Steelseries Engine installed (just KLM). Steelseries Engine is in the utility page for the 2QE, but KLM is not (I found KLM in another random similar model). But again, I'm a bit confused. I've searched this thread and see SSE came pre-installed for some people but not others.

Would I be safe to clean install with what's on the driver support page for Win 8.1? Could/should I use a newer chipset driver than the one listed for Win 8.1? And should I use the older IRST 13.5.0.1056? If I stick with the factory install, are there any other drivers should be updated? The MSI utilities like Dragon Gaming Center, Sizing Options, Battery Calibration, SCM, etc. are all obviously outdated so I'd perhaps need to update those, too.

Sorry for the huge post and all the questions. I've barely used the laptop and just want to get everything straight before I proceed with removing bloat (or clean installing), running Windows updates, and making a backup image of the updated OS. Thank you for reading and for your assistance!

I did a clean install of Windows 7 with updated drivers from http://www.station-drivers.com/ , graphics drivers from nvidia.com and steelseries engine from their web. I didnt had any MSI utility, until few weeks ago, where I dloaded Fan Control to make the fans runs +20% faster.

Depends on how much you apply at each application. It's a decent paste, but it requires time before it can reach its potential, and even then, said compounds in my previous post are better at thermal conductivity.

Use the pea method for a square IHS, and a line down the center for the smaller mobile IHS. Consider erring on the side of using too little rather than too much; if you overdo it and have to repaste, you waste more compound.

I've been thinking of taking off the back of my 2qd apache pro to repaste the CPU and put an extra stick of 8GB DDR3 in. Would this in anyway violate the warranty, because i'm seeing in forum posts it does and in others the opposite. Also, if repasting the CPU doesn't void the warranty, what are some good thermal compounds I could use? I don't really want to wait for the paste to cure or anything and preferably to give good cooling performance for what its worth. I don't want to pay 5x more for an extra degree of thermal headroom

So I powered down my system yesterday after doing a windows update in Win10 and now I'm finding that it's not charging. I had this problem before for a day or two where it went away again on its own through no intervention on my part. Is there a way to troubleshoot whether this is the internal battery or power adapter that's the cause? I don't have any means to measure voltage and spare adapters from other laptops do not fit the power requirements so I'm hesitant to try them.

    I'm running the Apache Pro 2QF PRO55 with 4720HQ + 970M + 128GB SSD/1TB HDD model that's been running on Windows 10.

    Thanks as always.
