    Yes, you can.
Both SATA & PCIe signals are supported. For best performance, use Samsung 950.

    1x 2.5" SATA bay + 1x M.2 bay.
The M.2 bay supports either SATA signal or PCIe signal.

Wow.. The price difference is huge. I think I'm going to stick to the 850. Kevin, Thx so much for your input. I'll report back once I get the unit delivered. I'll probably need help transferring over the OS to the m.2 drive.

Yup, not only price but also performance.

    500MB/s vs 2200MB/s.

This is exactly how I am running my GE62, and SSD with OS + and HDD. The only thing is (I haven't taken the lid off, but I'm pretty sure it's the case) that the SSD is located exactly to the left of the touchpad. Which makes resting your hands on the laptop pretty weird, as now the area to the right of the touchpad is almost human body temperature, whereas the area to the left is stone cold :D

Hi guys, I have just received my GE62 6QD skylake. I have my Samsung 950 pro on the way and should arrive next week.

I need some advice on how to install it without voiding the warranty sticker. Is it hard to do?

Further, Can I downgrade the whole system to Windows 7 when I will be reinstalling windows, or i must use windows 10? What about bios, does it need an update for nvme?

    Thanks a lot

Hmm, my SSD is on the left side of the touchpad, with the HDD on the right, and for me it's the SSD that is overheating and makes my left palmrest really hot... can't really help it except just letting it be..

The only way to install it is by opening the bottom panel, which would require you to go through that sticker.

There really isn't support for NVMe on Windows 7, and getting Windows 10 to work is much easier.

You can break the warranty sticker so long as you DON'T break anything else; MSi seems to have stated that you're permitted to open and replace/add components within reason (you should consult them for confirmation and limits on this). If you want to refrain from destroying the sticker altogether, apply heat to it before peeling it away; this softens the glue and prevents the sticker from breaking into pieces so that you can reapply it (be careful not to apply so much heat that you damage the chassis).

If you can obtain all of the drivers, you can downgrade. I don't recall whether MSi supplies Win 7 drivers for the version touting the 4th gen i7 or not, so you will need to check on that. You should not need to do anything to your BIOS to support that 950 Pro, either (if it does not show up in BIOS, check Windows; the 950 Pro does not show up in some BIOS setup utilities, but still works). As pat said, though, Windows 7 does not natively support NVMe, so you could run into some difficulties getting the Windows 7 setup to recognize it.

Alright then, the m2 sata has arrived, and I have no idea how to install it.

Actually,I cant get to open the notebook, which is almost embarassing. There is one screw that doesnt come out but rotates with a weird noise in the back. And the plastic panel on it, the one you have to remove and which is placed under the screen when the lid is open, doesnt come out. I applied a lot of pressure but im almost afraid it will break. How do you remove that panel?

There is no need to update BIOS just to install Windows 7. However, make sure go to BIOS and change the boot type from UEFI to UEFI + CSM (Compatible System Module), if you don't do this you won't be able to boot from Windows 7 disk or USB thumb drive, it will just freeze at Windows splash screen, but this is just the easy part.

The difficult part is once you booted to the Windows 7 installation screen it will never see the your Samsung NVMe SSD or even the normal HDD disks no matter what you do, period. This is not because of the NVMe driver, It's because your Windows 7 disk does not have USB 3.0 driver.

Also your USB mouse will not work and the touchpad works kind of strange too.

Gigabyte does provide a tool to integrated the USB driver into the Windows 7 installation USB and here is the video tutorial:

GE62 only comes with 1 PCIe/M.2 Combo slot, therefore, the SATA in BIOS can only set to AHCI, therefore, RAID or NVMe driver are not needed.

The only time you need to load RAID driver for NVMe is if you have dual NVMe SSDs with RAID-0 array and they are only available on MSI GT72s / GT80S /WT72S.

If the screw is not secured but not coming out, either, you might be able to flip the laptop over and give it a little shake to have the screw drop out. Maybe even a magnet can pull it out, or a magnetized screwdriver bit.

Remember that the optical drive needs to slide out and the three screws under that also have to be removed. Once you've got every screw out - or at least loosened - you can begin by prying the back cover off (just be careful it; the plastic retainer clips on this model near the screen are a bit weak).

Hey everybody, so im having the same issue as my friend here:
To be sure its the same problem i have uploaded an image here: http://imgur.com/HcZ3FuI

I have deleted my old driver (i think automatic windows 10 update caused it, computer tried to deny the update but idk what happened as it went black soon after that and started flickering white only reacting to mouse movements) It would also show a white box where the mouse was whenever it flickered. I have installed the latest driver (365.10) but the problem still occurs randomly when the display turns off. Also it has progressed to stop flickering and now shows a picture like the image above and now only seems to occur when it enters sleep mode. Thanks for any advice!

Yep, exactly. One screw secures it, then it pops up at about a 30 degree angle and can be pulled out.

You can turn off Windows automatic updates of drivers, the steps for that are here.

    http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/stop-automatic-driver-updates-windows-10

Otherwise, you could download the driver, then turn off wifi / unplug your ethernet, and then install it. Did you try updating the Intel HD driver as well?

I bought this laptop from GentechPC on cyber monday last year (11/30/2015).
When I bought it, I ordered "IC Diamond 24 Carat Thermal Compound on both CPU/GPU" which was offered for free as the cyber monday speical and also replaced the optical drive with "9.5mm SATA Optical Drive Bay Caddy" for $25.
I picked it up from a UPS facility on 12/10/15.

When I first got it, I tried to open the SATA caddy to see how the inside looks like, but it didn't open. I felt like it was defective but I wasn't gonna add another HDD anytime soon anyway so I brushed it off. SIGN #1
On day 1, there was a screen flickering issue. So I notified Ken from GentechPC about it and he wrote back to me that it might be NVIDIA issue and suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. I didn't follow the suggestion but the issue eventually resolved on its own. SIGN #2
Day 2, I got a blue screen and also kept getting "Failed to connect to a Windows Service" message for few weeks but they stopped eventually. SIGN #3

Fastforward to February, the laptop started making noise whenever I carried it around. Like there was a tiny particle rolling around inside the laptop. There was no issue other than that so I ignored it. SIGN #4

Then in April, the surface of the SATA caddy fell off. SIGN#5 (Attaching the image isn't working so you gotta click the links to open the shared images)
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5Arv-8K4nSJRGJHNUF4anhscUE/view?usp=sharing
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5Arv-8K4nSJT0dhODRZa1lrbVk/view?usp=sharing
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5Arv-8K4nSJZ3JMX2NyN3l4RDg/view?usp=sharing

Also, the laptop started to randomly not start! SIGN #6 The laptop wasn't plugged in when it didn't start and after plugging it in and re-trying, it ran again so I assumed it had something to do w. the battery. I also got another blue screen towards the end of April. SIGN #7
I didn't immediately notify GentechPC or MSI due to busy schedule. The laptop was still running fine aside from these issues so I postponed contacting them.

Then last Tues, the laptop suddenly didn't start at all. I examined the laptop trying to figure out the problem, and noticed that the rolling noise was gone. Then I found at the bottom of the laptop that it was a nail that's been rolling inside the laptop. How did I find out? The nail was stuck in between the MELTED hole.
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5Arv-8K4nSJSmtROVBWd0hKaWM/view?usp=sharing
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5Arv-8K4nSJMnVEQkFzeThJcVE/view?usp=sharing

So I emailed Ken at GentechPC and complained about the caddy and the nail coming undone and accused them for the flimsy job, which he denied. Basically he told me to ship my laptop back to them at my own expense so they can have a look at it. His responses have been unclear and unsatisfying so far. Last email I sent him was asking if I could pick up the laptop from them when they were done fixing it and also if the service is free covered under the warranty. (coz I'm already paying a lot for the shipping and it hasn't even been over HALF a year since I got it) But I got no reply back since!

I also called MSI on the same day when the laptop stopped working and they pretty much said the same thing, ship it to their service center so they can have a look at it. But today I called them again since GentechPC is ignoring me, and now they're saying that what happened to my laptop may not be covered by their warranty! They just kept telling me that they gotta have a look at it to determine whether or not it would qualify their warranty! I'm so pissed off!

I'm just a poor college student and I invested in this laptop for $1539 (even after a student discount), but it broke few months later w. NO fault of my own, and these 2 companies that are responsible are trying to turn it all on me! I don't know what to do anymore! I need some advice and help! PLEASE!

ouch Dude I mean wtf is going on with that burnt out hole in the back, I feel for you..

As far as the DVD caddy to Sata hard disk, i performed the same mod myself and those face plates that go onto the caddy are very flimsy, mine fell off a couple of days ago, i reattached it and stuck some scotch tape onto it(not ideal but hey-ho)

do you have some sort of house insurance that you can claim for damage to your laptop?

Hi I sorted my temps out by disabling Intel Speedstep in the bios, now it hovers around 60/70 Celsius when gaming

I just couldnt stop it overclocking like 3.3 ghz in windows 10 task manager, I tried to put the max cpu setting in power option to 99% but that didnt work, weird I thought it would stop it over clocking but anyway disabling speedstep not only helped the temps but also stops it sounding like a 747 taking off

Hello guys, I've some questions, can I replace a DVD with SSD using HDD caddy without voiding warranty? I mean as we know that one screw has a warranty void label on it, so would it be possible just to remove DVD and then to put SSD in HDD caddy in without putting away whole back cover?
How's your battery life while just browsing on the internet? Can you upgrade a battery with higher mah?
Does this laptop supports 32Gb ram?

Hello. I hope you guys can help me. I'm using a GE62 2QD Apache Pro.

I am having problems with bad audio. It isn't all audio, just certain things. I found someone on YouTube with the exact same problem:

This isn't the only problem I've had with this laptop. For how much I paid, this is probably the worst laptop I've bought so far.

I contacted [email protected] recently and this was their response:
    Hi Nick,

Removing warranty sticker and mount SSD inside of your computer doesn't change anything in case of warranty rules for other components.

MSI users are allowed to void the warranty sticker to upgrade RAM, HDD and also for cleaning purposes.

However, please note that any hypothetical damages which may occur during mentioned actions will not be covered under manufacturer's warranty (for e.g. Scratches, broken pieces, damaged pins etc.).

    This must be done gently.

    Thanks.

You're not sure what the issue is? I clearly state the issue AND give an example. I don't have Realtek Audio Manager. Buying USB speakers doesn't fix the laptop.

Maybe a better way to express what @Jamie7712 said is "I'm not sure what the causality is."

I don't hear anything wrong in the video you posted, but going off of what you stated earlier - "I am having problems with bad audio. It isn't all audio, just certain things" - It's sounding (no pun intended) like the audio quality is subjective to the media. Can you give us other examples and details of when the problem comes up?

Hello guys! I just bought msi ge62 2qf last Tuesday and so far I'm really happy with it :) One question though. I'm looking to buy some kind of screen protector for my laptop screen since I use my laptop for work and travel a lot beside gaming. It is really annoying though when my client abruptly touch my laptop screen to point up something. Even my sister also has the same habit like that. So, I really need some kind of screen protector to protect my laptop screen from scratch, dust etc... so that I no need to wipe the screen that often though. Anybody here ever use such screen protector? I need some advice about this. And some suggestion of what product should I buy is also welcomed. My laptop screen is an IPS panel matte anti glare display.

@dinbk90 - I've seen something from COOSKIN for 15.6" screens that has fairly good reviews. It's an anti-scratch, anti-fingerprint film that sticks via electrostatic adsorption (no adhesive/glue). Maybe you can use that as a base to compare other screen guards.

Thanks for the suggestion! I saw the one that u mentioned in lazada.com.my (I live in Malaysia btw) but the price is too expensive for me. :( I saw other brands and and narrowed down to these 2 products: http://www.lazada.com.my/healingshield-msi-ge62-2qf-screen-protector-clear-2115389.html

    http://www.lazada.com.my/genpm-high...tector-lcd-guard-protection-film-2576555.html

These two are within my budget and I might buy either one when I get my salary early next month.

Those look pretty comparable. There's really no warranty on them, though? That's too bad.

    • Hi everyone,

So I just recently got a GE62 from Best Buy. It's the 233 model with a 970m graphics card. I absolutely love it!

The only thing is that it started acting up a couple days ago (I think after an update for Windows 10. I just turned off auto-update recently). The issue occurs whenever the laptop goes into sleep. This could be by inactivity or closing the lid. When the laptop is started up again, either by lifting the lid or pressing a key, the computer seems to turn on, but the display screen remains black, and I don't notice any sort of power coming from it. The only thing I can do from this point on is do a hard shut off by holding the power button. In order to get around this, I either have to turn off the power saver settings from inactivity or do a complete shut down, but I'd rather just have the notebook sleep as it should.

Any advice as to how to fix this? Sorry, I'm not the most computer savvy, especially with Windows. This is my first non-Mac unit in about 10 years. Thank you!

Are you using anything now to OC? The "Sport Mode" OC's the card to a minor extent, although I forget by how much.

If you're putting it to sleep, there should always be power running to it (check the power button; the LED indicator on it should slowly pulse while asleep, and remain solid when on). Since the laptop uses Optimus (I think), it could be the switchable graphics; we've seen the same problem on a couple of Clevo systems prior to a BIOS revision.

Try updating your BIOS, if there's an update available. You may also want to reinstall - or update - the Intel Graphics driver.

It was the BIOS. Reinstalled with ease thanks to series of images and all seems to be working well again.

I have had issues with sound cracking though (this happened right out of the box). It's on and off, sometimes the audio sounds fine, other times not so much. This happens with both the laptop speakers and headphones that I plug into the computer. I hear this is kind of a common problem that many people solve by reinstalling the audio drivers. I was trying to find a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this, but couldn't find anything that wasn't too vague. Can anyone help me out and run me through how I go about uninstalling all the audio drivers and which I should install (I think Nahimic was the one I wanted again and not Realtek, but am not positive). I also have the Elgato Sound Capture software installed on there for game capturing, will I need to uninstall this as well?

Thanks again for the help everyone.

@JBassFox - Glad the BIOS update helped.

As for the audio, Nahimic is optional (software for adjusting sound parameters). Realtek is the audio chip/driver. Step by step...

    1. Download the audio driver from MSI - from their product page that's for your specific model (click on "Driver," then select your OS; the audio driver will show up in the list that appears)
    2. After downloading, you'll need to unzip/extract the folder.
    3. After unzipping/extracting, look for the Realtek setup. Launch it, and it will automatically uninstall your current version. If prompted to reboot, go ahead.

What I can't remember is whether the setup will automatically reinstall the driver after you restart or you have to run the setup again to reinstall the driver. Either way, once it has been reinstalled and you reboot the computer one more time, you should be all set.

There isn't any major flaw with the machine and it is a very good machine. It's definitely worth the value that you pay for.

I'm traveling Cross the country Monday. Not a lot of time. But the store is nationwide.

Well I took it back and got the 6qf 074us. Very happy.

For your information, backlight bleeding isn't considered a defective anomaly by MSI as well as other companies therefore it will not be replaced by service center.

However, if you pick up a more premium system then this type of issues can be reduced.

Thanks Kevin. I still got it sorted and came out on top. :)

I have a question for you, or the MicroStar staff. What are your experiences with pushing the 970m a bit further? Like another 200Mhz on the memory. I'm just wondering what kind of performance I can expect on CSGO. I had everything on medium/2x and was only getting ~60FPS. A LOT of visual tearing. I did some research and apparently the 9xxM series of cards get alot of tearing.

I assume there's something wrong in my nVidia configurations or Windows, but need help determing what I'm overlooking! [A laptop with lesser cpu/memory but same GPU gets 2-3x my FPS...]

@cefx - Screen tearing will happen on a lot of games unless V-Sync or G-Sync is enabled (the former limits your FPS). Have you poked around the Manage 3D Settings in your NVidia Control Panel? And/or checked your NVidia GPU utilization (using something like MSI Afterburner)?

I haven't pushed it much but I've allowed Svet to push it on several systems on his own remotely. According to him he has done the below configuration successfully.
    Core = +320
    Memory = +210
