I've been trying to figure out whether the 6th or 7th gen GE62VR include Thunderbolt 3; published sources are inconsistent though it seems like they do not. Can anyone confirm? I'm trying to make a purchase decision.

Is it written up somewhere how to replace the DVD drive the GE62VR comes with with a BR drive? Are there specific ones that fit that port?

It comes with a 8X DVDRW Super Multi 9.5mm so as long as the eject button of the replacement BR burner is located at the same spot then you are good.

    Hello,
I just wanted to ask - is there anyone who can compare fan noise (on idle) between GE62VR (or MVR - GTX 1070) and GS-series notebooks (GS63vr,..)? I'm really torn between the two (GS63vr/GE62MVR), but the noise concerns me. Another thing - today I was at a showroom trying out the GE62 (970m) and GS73vr (1060) - the GE62 had burning hot palm rest area and WASD keys, it felt like I was sticking my hand into magma... Can anyone confirm? Are the new GEs (GTX 1060/1070) better in that regard?

The price for the value is great and here are some reviews on YouTube for your review.
These reviews are mostly made for Sky Lake but Kaby Lake overall is just a higher clocked version of Sky Lake.

Hi guys, I need some help from you.
Just bought a GE62VR 6RF and the laptop is very hot in the left part. Even in idle the hdd is at 45-50 degrees. Therefore I cannot play anything.
I updated the bios as I heard this might help yet nothing. I am really pi""ed because after I bought it I went to the service department and I added 8gb ram and a 256gb M.2 so now I cannot return the laptop (unless I take it again to service to have the parts removed)
Any ideas if I change the hard or disable it I might solve the issue?

Hey Guys, Recently picked up Apache GE62VR

Interestingly, enough I am coming from a Sager P640re (which is for sale btw, PM if interested =D) and got some Prema Bios and vBios love.

Since then I have been overclocking like the latest addiction.

So - Amazing build quality except for the LCD lid, it is easily bendable. Also, the TN panel is "not IPS quality", but it has not caused concern for my 30 something old eyes. Very Crisp image, slightly dull colors but easily manageable.

Fan sound is audible but I have not experienced coil whine (that or am not sensitive).
The OEM software almost made me return the laptop, the OEM software alone. I hope MSI gets this, when dealing with the masses, it is never recommended to provide a system that can only run at 10% performance due to OEM software.

Audio is good once you remove niantic (sp?)
Uninstall Norton (that or suffer 50 mb/s read 35 mb/s write on your 256 SSD)

On to the fun part, it would seem that there is no custom vbios for the 1060 3GB that comes with this system. I can play with the boost curve and yield good results, nothing stellar.

    IE (1920x1080):
    Firstrike graphics - 12600 74C
    TimeSpy graphics - 3650 71C

RE7 very high everything at 75 FPS
    Doom Ultra both dx12 and vulcan - 75-95 / 100-125 (outside / Inside)

Anyone familiar with a custom VBios for this chip?

    Thank you,

I don't know why you can't play games with a 50c HDD, what does that have to do with anything? You should have just removed the HDD and used it for external storage (I did) and put in a larger SSD. My SSD only reaches 39c max and that is when encoding (CPU maxed). You didn't say what the CPU is running at which is more important. I'd also use a decent laptop cooler.

I don't understand why I should use a cooler. Previously I had an acer predator which I only gave back because it was 4.3 kg. I wanted something more practical.
I didn't say anything about the CPU because I am thinking the HDD is the problem as the heat is on the left side of the keyboard towards the touchpad.
It is warm in idle and browsing (which is unconfortable) and it almost burns my hand in gaming. I took it to the service and they say the temperatures are in the limit yet this really bugs me. I hope I can sell it online as I cannot return it (Because I picked it up from the shop and their return policy only allows returns if you order the goods online)

I am very disappointed with the laptop.

Hey, anyone with a GE62VR Apache Pro and the LG panel LGD04A7, can you share your portrait displays or MSI True Color installation file with me.

    %PROGRAMDATA%\Portrait Displays "C:\ProgramData\Portrait Displays\"

My model GE62VR Apache Pro-086 does not have the portrait displays information on the system and the installer does not work directly from the site while the aptop is advertised as having True Color.

I want to see if I can use MSI True Color with the correct files.

P.S. The only things I dislike about this laptop are MSI's ability to not troubleshoot well and not having access to MSI True Color as it will be kind of a deal beaker as the Panel is definitely far from calibrated out of the box.

A cooler can't hurt, only help with temps. You know what is also on left side under the keyboard THE CPU, so it should be warmer. For that reason you should concern yourself with the CPU not the HDD.

If I wanted a cooler I wouldn't have changed my previous laptop. I wanted a more portable gaming laptop.
The CPU is not the problem because it is situated on the upper left side while the heat is on the bottom where the hdd is situated.
I have two choices now: 1 to sell the laptop or 2 to replace the hdd with a ssd.
I would also add an m.2 ssd yet I am affraid it might heat as well.

Sorry if I seem aggressive. I really appreciate the advises yet I was hoping for something else when I changed the laptop. That acer predator I had seemed to be way better. I am really sad because I decided to return it.

Perhaps it's better to change the HDD with a SSD, otherwise you would suffer losses by reselling the unit.

I agree with Kevin. Why sell and lose about $400, better to put the money in a m.2 SSD an try that. At least you can always use that in something else. Only reasons I can think of for your HDD to run hot is it's defective or the CPU is running super hot and you have no airflow but I doubt the later in this case. No reason to have a HDD in a newer laptop these days anyway. Let us know the temps of your CPU at idle and max just for curiosity.

HDD in idle is 45 degrees. It is the only component that creates discomfort when holding the laptop on your lap. I am thinking of changing it with a SSD and also add an m.2 SSD. Only problem is I need to take the laptop to service not to lose the warranty although I talked to MSI and removing the screw should not cancel the warranty. But my country is special and you never know what the local service might say.

I am from Romania. I complained regarding this issue yet nothing happened.
I am just trying now to solve the problem.
Can anyone help me with the SSD temperatures in idle and full load? This is the only annoying part when gaming.
I read the SSD temperatures are 0-70 degrees yet I really hope in idle it is around 30 that would mean a 50% drop from my current situation.
Also I have an M.2 SSD that should also run 0-70 degrees yet I have read it might reach 90.
I am thinking of installing windows on the M.2 SSD - 256 gb.
And buy a 980 mb SSD to replace the current HDD which is also crap - 5400 rpm.

I replaced my m.2 SSD with a Crucial MX300 SATA SSD and at idle it is 34c, CPU is 36c with room temp of 26c (warm). I don't game so I don't know the max it will go but after reading a review they stress tested it at 19c room temp and it only hit 49c. Maybe a m.2 will run cooler since it is not encased in anything. Both my MSI's came with a 1TB 7200rpm HGST HDD not 5400 junk. I have never concerned myself with temps for HDD/SSD since it's the CPU/GPU that are the biggest heat producers so re-pasting is a good idea. MSI USA states "You are allowed to upgrade the internal components of your system without voiding your warranty as long as no damages are inflicted during the upgrade process." Mine were opened up the 1st day I got them and you can see mods were made.

Before the MX300 what did you have?
I bought SSD Plextor M7VG 256GB SATA-III M.2 2280. In my case it is simple: I cannot keep my left palm on the keyboard, or I can it is just hot.
So you bought a gaming laptop and you are not playing anything?

It came with a Toshiba 128GB m.2 but that is too small so I replaced it. I encode video so I need a powerful CPU (i7). I like MSI laptops because they have good screens, build quality, keyboard, sound and ability to upgrade parts. It's for multimedia and encoding I just don't use the nvidia GPU that's all.

Well I came to the conclusion that if I don't sell it in two weeks I will replace the hdd with a SSD and add the M.2 SSD plus 8gh ram.
Hope it helps with the heating problem.

I bought a laser digital thermometer and I checked the temperatures. In idle on the keyboard side the temperature reaches 40 degrees and on the back 50. This is where the HDD is located. I don't think this is normal.

I have one question if you all know: as I said I want to change the HDD with a SSD and add a M.2 SSD as well.
I am reading some not so good news regarding the M.2 SSD. I bought the one below and I see it goes to 60 degrees

    http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/plextor-m7v-512gb-ssd-and-m-2-ssd-review,7.html

Having read the below threat I am afraid the temperatures might reach 90 degrees which is huge.

    https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3935478?page=3

So what do you think: should I install the M.2 as well or just the SSD?

Just try the SSD first and see how it goes. It's not like you will be torture stressing your drive all the time. Most of the time it should be idle or close to it.

Edit: My MX300 has Adaptive Thermal Protection: If the drive gets too hot, it throttles back the drive until the temperature returns to a safe level.

I did and temperatures dropped only on the back of the laptop. Still reaches 47 on the keyboard side.
Another thing I am playing GTA and Fifa and the image gets blurry.
In GTA everything that is in the long range and in Fifa the grass and the stands. This shouldn't happen as I have geforce experience and settings should be ok.

Hello everyone, I am about to acquire a GE62 6QF and I need to know two specific things. I'm going to use it mostly on my legs for internet use and light things like social networking. I'm worried about the touchpad, since I'm not going to use a mouse, I need a good performance in handling the laptop. What do you think of the touchpad is nice? As for the temperature, you will feel very hot using it in my legs in common tasks? Or does the surface heat so that I burn the palms of my hands? Thank you

    Welcome on the forum Ramonero.

Just for browsing you will feel a little warm bur it doesn't get that hot. The hottest point of the keyboard si 40 degrees and trust me it is not hot.
Especially if you change the HDD with an ssd.

Touchpad is very good on vertical but not so good on horizontal. I am not a fan of touchpads in general so I recommend a wireless mouse.
Another thing watch out for the dust. It needs cleaning almost every day.

Thanks for the reply. Can the horizontal slip really be very annoying or can I get used to it? I had read that it felt like a horizontal sandpaper, but is it so? As for the buttons you think? Have a nice touch?

The mouse is fine, I don't have a problem with it. Even when encoding it is just slightly warm. It is never recommended that you use rest a laptop on your legs since you will be blocking the airflow so it will run hotter than using it on a desk or cooler. My MSI laptops are always on coolers, I have a beater for mobile use.

Just wondering what is best memory upgrade for an MSI GE62 2QE (has i7 4720 and GTX965) I [picked up one for a buddy used and it only has 2GB ram in it as guy kept his upgraded ram. Is this unit capable to run 2133 or is1866 best choice , he will be getting a 16GB kit. Already dropped a p[air of Intel 540's 120GB into it and he will add an sata III2.5" SSD in place of 1TB HDD. I assume if he adds a third 540 120GB and raid 0's them he would reduce the 2.5" SSD to sata 2 correct?

Well unless you get a unlocked BIOS you will be stuck with 1600mhz. 1866-2133 is possible if unlocked. You could get HyperX 1600 CL9 for stock BIOS.

Thanks for the reply, friend will probably use the Kingston 1600 I sold him which was pulled from my GT72 2QE prior to me trading it in. Is there an unlocked bios floating around here on the forum or over at techinferno? be nice to find a unlocked bios file posted?

Hi guys, I have a second hand 2QF Apache Pro-056 which I've been using for about a year and the owner before me for about a year as well. The interior has never been cleaned and I know the previous owner used his laptop mainly in his car and I smoke in my house, all this to say the laptop probs full of dust and I'm having heat issues.

I'd like to clean the fans and the heat sink fins but from the picture posted in the first post it looks like I can't do that without lifting the whole assembly and messing up the thermal paste. Does anyone know of an effective way to clean the fans without having to repaste? And do you guys recommend changing the thermal paste? I've never done it before and I'm a bit nervous since if I damage any of the soldered parts i'll essentially brick my laptop.

Also I notice the SSD is getting very warm during operation and I understand that's not normally an issue, could it be that the SSD is faulty?

You could just use compressed air to clean the fans and everything else. I use canned air to clean them when I removed the HS when I repasted. This is a good Vid on how to disassemble and repaste, it is easy to do. I'd repaste and blow out everything then see what the SSD temps are and report back.

    I just bought a GE62 7RE-286CA
    7700HQ
    1050 ti
    16GB Ram
    128GB SSD
    1TB HDD
    120hz screen

Just did a few benchmark and got the best Laptop benchmark with 1050ti and 26th overall benchmark (Desktop/laptop included) for a 1050 ti.

Anyone know what the replacable part are in the GE62 7RE? (I'm guessing 2 x Ram slot, Lan Chipset, 1 SSD NVME slot, 1 HDD slot) is my list complete?
Is the 1050 ti in the GE62 7RE mxm?

    Thanks guys

Memory can be upgraded, NVMe, HDD, and ODD (conversion to HDD/SSD), and GPU is not upgradeable.
