WASD section is close to the processor but not right above it therefore it shouldn't be that bad. The lid is easy to replace as long as you can find the parts. -
FYI: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GE62VR-7RF-Apache-Pro.html#down-bios - is the support page for your laptop, it had recent bios updates and EC Firmware, as well as a patch for the intel management engine fix a few weeks ago. I mention it because MSI can release fan profile updates as well.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -

Hi! My laptop is ge62vr 6gen. I have a problem with my temp it was running in sports mode and my temp reaches up to 93c in GPU but 60-65 in CPU for comfort mode my temp was 78c in GPU and 55-60 in CPU. Its already repasted and fan cleaned. I used unigine heaven benchmark.
I want to ask if that is normal temp for both GPU and CPU? Or there is something wrong with the GPU temp? I also have vaccum cooling and cooling pad CPU and GPU was undervolted. I think my bios and EC isnt update but do you think it will help?
Btw, my friend has the same unit and was clean and repasted like a month ago before me but his temp on sports mode was 75c tops.
I appreciate the help! Thank you!
EDIT: Could this also be a heatsink problem? Could the GPU heatsink failing thats why the temp was too much, can't even use sports mode.Last edited: Apr 14, 2018 -
While you are there you might as well do the Intel management engine patch as well. If you give me the full model number I could perhaps help further.... GE 62 6R what ?
Repaste with quality thermal paste will help as well. Just be careful not to build up static. I was in the middle of a repaste (had the job done and was putting things back together) and didn't realise I haddnt discharged all the static from movement and basically zapped my laptop......Ksen likes this. -

BIOS & EC update are also recommended and they hardly brick a system nowadays unless your system is unstable.asm1 likes this. -
As @Kevin@GenTechPC says, you are unlikely to brick from a bios update these days and you are not taking lid off (yet) get the bios EC and Intel Management update from the above link and get them installed, pretty easy - theres instructions in the file and you flash from the bios anyway. Your BIOS is pretty old - the one on the support site is from 2018-02-22
Also get any newer updated software/utilities from your support page, and then test for a while and report backKevin@GenTechPC and Ksen like this. -

Hmm Strange one
Unlikely that the heatsink itself is the issue, its a bit of metal.
Whats your idle temps (i.e not in sports mode or under load)?
How warm is the room you are in?
Maybe try lifting the rear of the laptop slightly with a book (just so fans aren't directly in contact with surface/desk - air can circulate)
Are your fan vents free from dust/obstruction ? -
Idle temp is around 38-40c in cooler booster (fun running @ 6000rpm) in auto mode 45c. I have an aircon and my laptop is on a cooling pad, the cooling pad itself has adjustment at the rear. I just clean the fan vents.
Btw I have a new problem, after I update the bios my FPS in sports mode drop drastically while the temps are still high. But my FPS in comfort mode is still the same no issue before and after update of bios. -
-
Xtu for cpu and msi afterburner for gpu.
-
I know it sounds weird but too much paste and the CPU/GPU is 'insulated' and heated up, to little and it fails to transfer the heat. Both leading to highter temperatures.... thats about all I can think of. -
Yes I did twice already in 3months. All i can think of now is because my laptop is getting old and some of the hardwares are failing.
-
-
Ok heres what I did for the last 3 months. Clean installation of OS, bought a new GPU and CPU fan. Bought 2 vaccum cooler, new cooling pad, 1st repaste was Liquid metal almost 3months ago then decided to go kryonaut since my friend uses kryonaut and his temp was very good, 75c GPU temp in sports mode (btw, we have the same laptop). Just updated my Bios yesterday and undervolted my GPU and CPU. i think thats all what I did to my laptop.
-
Did you set the performance in control panel (windows) to "High Performance"? Dragon center doesnt always do that.
-
Yes I did that too. Meh, its ok. I just gonna play my laptop in comfort mode too prolong the life of it. Anyway thank ya'll so much for helping me. Appreciate it!

Hi guys.
Sorry for my bad English.
Recently I have some problems after upgrading windows 10 to 1803 on my MSI GE62 6QD.
Before upgrade everything was working fine. after upgrade I ran to some problems:
1- FIXED: after plugging/unplugging laptop to the AC charger, the screen goes black. (after installing some drivers from MSI it seems that driver update fixed this problem)
2- NOT FIXED: after hitting the restart button from the start menu, Windows 10 shows the restarting animation, and then laptop screen goes black, but laptop is still on. I have to hold power button for a few seconds to shut down the laptop.
there is no problem with shut down button. also, the restart button works perfectly in a Linux distro (tested on Kubuntu 18.04) -
Blame windows.

Unfortunately because of this i have to stay on windows, otherwise i would be on linux if all the drivers and msi program were compatible in the futur -
I think I'm ready to pull my hair out...
I have a GE62 2QE-002 (Haswell i7-4720HQ, nVidia 965M, Windows 8.1). In the future I'd like to add a 240-256GB SSD to use for the OS and keep the 1TB drive as a secondary/data drive.
I've been trying to figure out what M.2 slots my laptop has. I've searched this thread and around the web, and I'm so confused. I know my laptop has 3 M.2 slots. I just can't figure out if the middle M.2 slot is SATA/PCIe or just SATA.
The manual that came loaded on my GE62 doesn't mention a SATA/PCIe combo slot, but if I download a manual from the support page for my model it says that the middle M.2 slot is "SATA Gen 3 M.2 & PCIe 2.0 x2/ x4 Combo Slot." This review of the GE62 2QE Apache shows the middle M.2 slot having B+M keys. This MSI forum thread says the middle slot is "PCIe x2 M.2." This disassembly guide for the GE62 2QD shows the middle slot having an M key only. Another MSI forum thread says the GE62 2QE has SATA3 M.2 only. And so on...
Of course I could just open my laptop and check myself to see if the middle slot is an M key or B key... except that one of the screws under the ODD bay has a deformed driving recess and I didn't want to risk stripping the screw head. I need a better screwdriver set before proceeding since my current one is old and the tips are a bit worn.
I couldn't see the M.2 slots well enough from the ODD bay gap. I'm fairly certain I saw the top two M.2 slots had B keys (notch on the left). I can't remember if I was able to see the middle slot clearly, as memory tells me that the ODD SATA connector blocked my view of the lower middle M.2 slot, hence why I didn't take a picture.
Correct me if I'm wrong but these are the three possibilities for the middle M.2:
- B key, SATA or PCIe 2.0 x2
- M key, SATA or PCIe 2.0 x4
- B+M key, SATA or PCIe 2.0 x2/x4
Another concern is that if the middle M.2 slot is PCIe 2.0, would it even be possible to install a PCIe 3.0 M.2 and just be limited to PCIe 2.0 speeds? It seems like all currently available PCIe M.2 drives are 3.0, and I'm not sure if the BIOS on my GE62 2QE would even be able to read. Would using a PCIe M.2 drive affect the GPU bandwidth in any way?
As you can see I'm very confused about all of this. Any help to clear it up would be greatly appreciated. Basically I'm just trying to figure out if I should get a 2280 SATA-3 M.2 or 2280 PCIe M.2 (3.0 for a 2.0 slot?). My gut feeling says that going with a SATA-3 M.2 is the safer route compared to possible compatibility issues with a PCIe M.2. SATA-3 M.2 drives seem to be harder to find, though, since newer hardware uses PCIe 3.0/NVMe.
edit - I've found this "Storage Device Information" document from MSI's website. It says that the GE62 2QE (GTX 965M, HM87 chipset) has 2 B-key M.2 slots and 1 M-key M.2 slot, all using SATA-3. So, that may settle it? I'm thinking that MSI erroneously updated the manuals for ALL GE62 models, even though the information for Skylake chipsets and their M.2 slots doesn't apply to previous GE62 (Haswell) models.Last edited: Sep 24, 2018 - B key, SATA or PCIe 2.0 x2

So then the GE62 2QE (i7-4720HQ, 965M) does not have a middle SATA/PCIe combo M.2 slot after all, but it does have two B-key slots and one M-key slot (all SATA-3).
Old posts in this very thread suggest that the middle combo slot is capable of running PCIe x4 M.2 SSDs. However, it's not clear if posts #527 and #529 are referring to the 2QE model mentioned in the prior posts or to one of the GE62 6Q_ Skylake models that would have come out around the same time as the posts (October 2015).
But yes, I do fully understand that if the middle M.2 is SATA only then it can't use a PCIe M.2, which is totally fine by me. Just wanted to be sure about what my purchase options are, since SATA-3 M.2 drives seem to not be as widely available as their PCIe equivalents.Last edited: Sep 24, 2018Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -

Has anyone tried to overclock their display? I'm trying to squeeze as many FPS out of mine as I can, but so far, I haven't had any success pushing the display past 62 Hz. According to CRU, I've got an "LGD040E Generic PnP Monitor". I can't find a lot of info online about this panel and am not sure how far it can be pushed.
I've got the GE62-2QE Apache Pro with the i7-5700HQ and GTX965M
