I would personally recommend going for the MSI GE62 Apache 082 or 276 (difference is one has windows 8.1 vs windows 10, same thing really). Reason: Has 12GB ram, has broadwell (haswell is just as fine but why not get the newer version?) and its $50 cheaper.

Also, contact the company representatives from powernotebooks, gentechpc, and xoticpc (message them from here on the forums) and ask them for the best offer they can give you. It's much more practical to order from them than amazon. Also be sure to register your laptop after you order it

Do so! You spent a lot of money on a premium notebook. I'm positive they'll let you with enough persuasion.

Guys i need some urgent help. I tried to wipe the laptop using the recovery disks i made with the BurnRecovery inbuilt tool.

It went through the first disk and there was an error saying if i wanted to recover i would have to start again...

Have tried a few times and same error each time.

Problem is now the hdd is partly wiped so windows is gone and it won't boot (only goes into bios)
What are my options here? Call msi for warranty, or burn the disk again hoping it was a faulty disk, or fresh windows install? Where would i get the windows media?

    Any help appreciated.

Breaking the sticker will not void the warranty. However any damage you may cause is not covered under the warranty. MSIGeno has verified this on a few posts.

Don't worry about the warranty sticker, this is also stated by MSI's rep.
There are exceptions but if you are technical and careful, and nothing becomes damaged during the process then you will be fine.

    Hey guys!

I am about to buy my MSI GE62:
    http://allegro.pl/msi-ge62-apache-i7-4720-8gb-1tb-gtx965-fhd-280zl-i5539053245.html

As I buy it I would like to also order an SSD to add by myself and install OS on it. My question is - other than looking for and M.2 2280 and the reading/writing speed, should I pay attention to something else? Are there some SSDs that work better or worse with the laptop? I honestly would like to go with the cheapest option, as the laptop is already stretching my budget a little bit, but also I don't want to buy some trash that will break after short time...

    Thanks for your help!

Don't get a M.2 PCI-Express drive and expect it to work on its own.

Also, maybe do a bit of research and see if there is some info on the m.2 drive's reliability or durability. A lot of manufacturer's should have an estimated lifespan, either for of how many hours or TB of writes they will last for.

The Crucial SATA M.2 SSD will work just fine, but as Itchyman said, do not buy PCIE M.2 SSD since the system does not have PCIE signal installed for the slot.

Thing is, i don't need to repaste or do anything else now. After undervolting, my temps went down by 6-10°C degrees, depending on the situation. Other thing is, that CPU will never die, it it just immortal. What does die in most cases is the GPU. So if you don't care about battery then heat is not such a problem, because these GTX9 series are very cool and, in this ntb, the cooling system is excellent.

    Hi, everyone.

I just picked up a couple of MSI GE62 2QD Apache Pros from Computer Upgrade King through their Amazon storefront. Excellent specs for the price:
    • Core i7 5700 2.7 GHz
    • 16 GB RAM
    • GTX 960M
    • 256 GB ssd
    • 2 TB hdd
    • DVD R/W
I did have a couple of questions regarding the system that maybe someone here could answer. My wife and I both have issues with light sensitivity and certain color combinations. In particular, the default red of the keyboard backlight when restarting the system is hard on our eyes. Now, we can live with it if necessary - there's no way we're returning these awesome little beauties - but it would be 100 times more awesome if there was a way to change or disable the default color when working outside of the Steel Series Engine software.

Any ideas? We don't want to completely disable the backlighting as we do like it (we have a blue color scheme that works very well for us). Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

    Flynn

hi to every body i got the msi ge62 2qe ....
pretty much satisfied with the quality however there seems to be an issue with the dvd rom ... when i open it , it seems that the drive is not well placed and produces some itchy sounds and goes in some what badly and needs to be forced to go in , unlike my other notebook that goes in smoothly is it normal or needs some repairing hand ?

I also noticed the DVD drive is poor quality, it's because the rails are made of plastic, it's not great. I near enough never ever use it, so it's not an issue for me.

Hello, i'm sorry but pretty sure you can't change the default red color of the keyboard when booting or outside SS software without modification on EC (Embedded Controller) Firmware.
But, you can try to contact MSI online support (through register.msi.com) to make a modification on EC to change keyboard default color or you can ask svet if his software (EC tuner) can change that so you don't waste your money.

Here's svet thread on MSI forum regarding EC Tuner (It's Donationware)

Thanks, zizimonzter. I'll check it out. :)

I did find that you can use Fn+numpad + and FN+numpad - to decrease/increase brightness after the BIOS boot stage, but it resets once you power off the system or reboot a couple of times.

    Indeed.
There's a fix about the backlight in the latest EC
    16J2EMS1.507
    1. fan speed does not turn to low RPM quickly when system reboot
    2. keyboard backlight does not keep last status when system resumed from S3

You can download it from here:
    Code:
    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GE62-2QD-Apache-Pro-5.html#down-firmware
It will save the last state before system going Reboot/Sleep/Turn off.
If the backlight were on full brightness before turned off then when you turn it on the backlight will be on full brightness.

Sweet! I'd downloaded it but hadn't installed it yet. I'm restoring the factory image now, but when I'm finished I'll flash the EC and try it out. :)

    Guys i have a huge problem :/

The laptop was running fine, i was playing GTA V at 60fps (mostly) with great temps 70c on the GPU, 72-75 on the CPU, you can see here

But i messed with some graphics settings in GTA, and put them all back again, and now my temps are 90c ALL THE TIME. The page file is using all 5GB allowed, the CPU usgage is only 35-40% and its 90c. Watching youtube videos is 75c.

Something is messed up and im worried. The ONLY reason i bought this laptop over others is the cool temps. But now its crazy. I dont want to undervolt etc etc, i will in the future. I dont need to now, not using 35% of the CPU.

The GPU is staying cool at around 75c. Whats happening?

I got my laptop back and sadly all data was gone from it. but this time around everything in my laptop seems small in size and some of the application have big blurry texts. I never had this problem before I send it in to fix it. Its annoying and i want to know if there is a fix. I tried doing the "disable display scaling on high dpi setting" but it made the application really small and unable to read

Did you check the DPI setting in the Display options (Control Panel -> Display)? (It should be at 100%, ideally.)

Hello again guys, just an update. I have reset my laptop back to factory settings, and still getting 90c on the CPU at all times PLUS thermal throttling. As soon i run Battlefield 4, even on medium settings, the temps go to 87c and it throttle the CPU to 3.1ghz. Then the temps sit at 89c and doesnt throttle anymore. This surely cant be right. This laptop cannot handle 3.6ghz, so whats the deal with you guys? Stable temps atmax clocks? A lot of people have said they are 3.8 with no issues.

PS, unvolting in XTU has absolutely no effect on my laptop, i have it at -65mv and the temps are exactly the same as stock.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise this laptop is going back.

Edit: I have the Dynamic CPU Voltage to -80mV, underclocked to 3.0ghz and the temps are down to about 84c on maximum stress. Seems high still.

Battlefield will push the CPU to it's TDP limit as 3.1ghz is about the max for a highly threaded workload at 47W.

Check the air vent and make sure it's not blocked by dust because if they built-up and block the vent then the heat cannot escape efficiently.

I know BF4 and GTA V are CPU intensive so i understand. So im playing Rocket League, with -80mv undervolt and and 400mhz underclock on all multipliers, and im averaging 83c, and it got to 88c. Im returning it, this CPU is lemon, im sure of it. Plus one of the speakers is broken so its just an extra reason.

Yeah that doesn't sound right at all, you should definitely contact MSI. I can think of a few things like maybe one of your fans are defective, maybe your fans aren't spinning at a high RPM, maybe you have high performance mode on which automatically overclocks regardless of your undervolt/overclock, really not sure but contact MSI. The reason why they have a warranty is to solve issues like the ones you experience.

This weekend I have played about 14 hours of GTA V on my GE62, it's been perfect and I have zero issues with temps even with the laptop sat on my lap (I position it to keep the vents free). Temps aren't an issue at all. I'm under-volted on the CPU and Turbo is all set to highest. I have an under-volt and small overclock on the GPU also.

Looks like MSI starting to update GE62/72 Broadwell page with adding some new drivers for Windows 10, and some Utility like new SCM version and i believe all of this also work for other MSI Notebook including Haswell version.

I was just browsing the internet and stumbled upon a forum where a guy overclocked his GTX 970m by 500hz. It is insane and when his temps are 85°C it is a lot stress for the GPU. I was thinking about possibility of exchanging it in a case of failure. Is the GPU soldered? How much would it cost to exchange it? Any idea?

If you overclock your GPU via software like MSI afterburner I don't believe manufacturers can "detect" your overclock. But even so, your GPU wouldn't stop working if you overclock it too much. It'll just shut itself down. Even if you force voltage onto the card, it'll automatically safe-lock itself and shut down. I haven't heard many stories of people's chips dying from an overclock/overvolt. GPUs, after Hard drives and RAM have the highest failure rate in laptops (no source, just speculation over the years) so even if it did fail, they wouldn't suspect you had a part in it. Especially with that shiny warranty sticker intact, haha.

I do love the laptop but its still with the return period, and im leaving the country for 6 months in a week so no turn around time to get it all sorted. Ill buy another one sometime soon maybe. Maybe not. But im glad all you guys are enjoying it :)

PS , im on Balanced in profiles, and Comfort in MSI Dragon Center. Apparently these are the ones to use. Anyway! Over and out.

I have the new msi ge with 970m and i7 5700hq and i have the same problem with the charger, i lose battery when i play game.
My charger is an 150w, and i have found a solution which is to lower the maximum power of the CPU in the windows "power options" and it works, I lose no more battery.
Have you the same problem ? Anyone have a charger 180w for test ?

It's not so much a problem but how it is designed. It's likely the board is set to 9 lying draw that at most from any AC source.

Ive read on other pages that the 180w or 220w (or whatever it is) PSU will stop this power drain. Its because 150 isnt enough to power the 970m GTX and all the other parts, so it drops 4% an hour while gaming, this stops at 20% i believe and the GPU underclocks/volts to stop the power draw.

PS guys on another note. How can i disable CPU Turbo Boost? I have 4720HW. In XTU its grayed out, and in BIOS there isnt even an option, just Intel SpeedStep. Thanks

Turbo Boost can be disabled with an unlocked BIOS from Svet since the stock BIOS doesn't provide many options.

Or you can use option in power options / chose your power plan / chose changes in power plan then find processor management and set max power 99% instead 100%.

So Msi is apparently unaware of this problem because I contacted them for the charger problem and they told me to send it to me, he sent another, but it's the same 150w , so useless ...

    Hey guys!

I got my MSI GE62 minutes ago and proceeded with installation of Windows 7 (I got the laptop with DOS only). Now that I want to install drivers from the partition that was on the laptop, there seems to be some problem. When I use the One touch installation it says installation complete without installing anything, and when I try to do it manually no drivers appear. I was wondering if the laptop maybe should use Windows 8 or better?

Edit: Nvm, just had to manually download drivers for W7

I'm new to this so forgive me if this is a dumb question.
seeing that due to the 150w psu the battery drains even when plugged in while playing games, so I'm wondering:

    1. is it possible to plug in a 180w psu without issues and fix the problem? and if so which one would be a good idea to buy? Or would msi themselves send you one if you inquire?

    2. does it only start draining the battery on very heavy load or simply whenever the 970m is being used regardless, and how fast does it drain?

    3. Is it possible to fix the problem by downvolting/downclocking the cpu/gpu and how much of a performance hit would it be?

    4. why wouldn't msi add a 180w psu in the first place?

    Thank you in advance.

    1. It wont hurt, it's just whether the EC is set to allow more than 150W (I've not tested it on this model).

    2. Heavy load and not very quickly, usually a few percent only after a heavy session.

    3. Reducing power consumption will help, if you leave the clocks at stock but undervolt the performance hit can be nill.

    4. It reduces the overall weight of the machine and does the job at stock for the vast majority of users.
