Windows Update downloads all the drivers automatically. Some of these drivers may not be the latest always, but that won't be much of a problem. If there is any driver for which you want the latest version (e.g. for GPU), you can install just that one by downloading it from MSI or Nvidia's website.

What build of Windows 10 are you using? if you are NOT on the Creator Build preview, you can either use dGPUidle from here https://github.com/jobeid/dGPUidle or, if this does not work for you, start the NVIDIA control panel with the 3D preview, pause it and minimize the window. Both options should keep the amber on (dGPU running but idle) with minimal resources. This should take care of the stutter while you watch videos.

You sure you don't have that mixed up?
The Creators preview fixes the issue. dGPUidle and the 3D preview are workarounds until the official update comes out.

Go to Mouse Settings. Click on the link for Advanced Options. Go to the Elan tab. There you can bind two finger tap or two finger click to Popup Menu. One other adjustment I've made is in the Elan tab, I checked the option to disable the touchpad if a mouse is plugged in. This saves me a lot of frustration while typing.

My apologies. You are correct. Here's what I meant to say:

I think a lot of the issues are mainly software and microsoft's failure to keep up with how fast hardware drivers are updated and implemented. I had a few BSOD the past week after i switched to an NVME drive and the temps of the drive were higher than my cpu by a large margin. Eventually after reading online for a few days i attempted to update every driver in the device manager. After an hour or so doing this, i have been trouble free for a few days now doing the exact same thingsand NVME temps have lowered at least 5-7 degrees under the same circumstances. I have a GS60 and I remember tinkering a bit to get that one to work also. I put a second 128gb drive for a raid0 array and it is dead fast, i honestly think loading times are faster than the NVME drive, i assume this is due to the time the bios takes to recognize the NVME drive, and in real world usage i see absolutely no difference. NVME drive swap was more for size coming from 128 and the fact that the GS63VR doesnt have 2 m2 slots.so for me 480GB is a godsend compared to the 128 it came with. I for most have put in more work than most to get the experience i want from my gs63VR but with companies like XOTICPC, GENTECH and others around i dont see why anyone would shy away from these laptops, they are very well built, fast, stylish and perform. My GS60 which i bought amazon used 3 years ago with a GTX860m still rocks in medium settings in most games, and is stil looking great and performing pretty much like the new one, honestly the only place where the new laptop outperforms it is in games and that's more due to the 1060 everything else they are pretty much even.. Also this forum has been amazing at providing updated information and solutions to most problems. All in all i think the experience one has with enthusiast level hardware.will very much rely on the level of enthusiasm the user has. For regular Joes, there are the dells, acers and hps of the world for the rest of us, we know what we want and what are options are. and its up to us to make sure the big names here us out and take us into account, in the meantime its up to us to support each other and bit by bit help brands be better, we speak, its up to them to listen. In the meantime we have people like GENTECH and XOTICPC serving as great middlemen, and we should show our love by supporting them. To sum things up. before crying wolf, look at the resources you have at hand and then cry wolf, but not before....my 2 cents.

Interested in getting a dock for the GS63VR, but need a few confirmation from those who already have one.

    https://www.owcdigital.com/products/usb-c-dock

This is what I have in mind in getting, but have two concerns.

    - With the USB C connector being a power adapter providing power as well, will it affect the GS63VR negatively in anyway when connected? Or will the GS63VR just not draw any power?

    - Will the monitor that's connected to the dock be able to have colour calibration/profiles? I ask because I'm currently using a DisplayLink dock, and any monitor that's connected through that dock can't have a colour profile on it.

The reviews I'm reading on B&H isn't very comforting either, making me wonder if there would be any comparability issues with devices etc.

I am using dell's TB15 ($65 off ebay) thunderbolt dock and base on my experience:

    1. no, I don't think gs63 can receive power from thunderbolt 3 port (my dock has a 240w power supply)
    2. yes, I can use a profile on monitor

    1. Wasn't expecting it to receive power. Just curious if the existence of a power supplying dock would be an issue.

    2. That's fantastic news, good to hear.

    Hi!

I'm will probably buy the kabylake FHD version of the gs63vr. Before I do, are there any common problems/weaknesses? How long is the batterlife while watching movies?

I have the Kaby Lake FHD version and the Killer wireless is abysmal. I had to use an external USB Wifi-stick and uitimately swapped the Killer card for an Intel 8260.

Other than that, the trackpad is pretty bad and the speakers are horrible. And I absolutely do not like the build quality of the case. However, performance is excellent, keyboard fantastic. And it is pretty quiet too if you swap the HDD for an SSD.

I get about 3 hours on 50% brightness. Also undervolted the CPU by 150 mv.

Hi, my GS63VR 6RF suddenly only boots to BIOS. Presumably my SSD with the OS on it isn't responding. When I check the boot order in BIOS there's only one HDD and no mention of an SSD. I have both an SSD and an HDD installed, while only the SSD has Windows installed.

What do people with a functional laptop see here? Should the SSD be listed?

Must be my lucky day (or not...?). I got into the recovery tools by pressing F3 on boot. The system repair utility there reported it couldn't fix the system. I then tried going into the UEFI (BIOS) from there. It then reboots into the BIOS just like when pressing Delete on boot. Like I tried already before I loaded optimized defaults, then saved & exited again and this time round Windows booted fine. Windows disk checking reports no errors.

When I check boot order in BIOS now there is drive model info listed next to HDD. This wasn't there while I couldn't boot.

Do you guys recommend I have this unit serviced/RMA'ed?

My beloved sager recently passed away, and suddenly needing a laptop, I picked up a GS63VR. From best Buy (Don't judge me too much!)

It's a really nice laptop. Thin, light, powerful. Well, with some tweaking.

I swapped out the 5400rpm 1TB Hard drive with the 7800 1TB from my old laptop. Fresh install of windows to remove bloatware. Downvolting of the CPU to avoid overheating.

Only thing I can't get rid of is the screen. It's.. a screen. It's functional, and works. That's about all I can say about it. Fortunately, I rarely use an external monitor for every day use. Since I will be asked, here is the screen I have: N156HGE-EAL.

Overall, a really nice little machine. Though I MAY return it if the 1070 version comes out really soon.

    Hi!

I bought the gs63vr kabylake FHD model (7RF-218NE) and wanted to share my thoughts.

    The bad:

    - The trackpad: I can understand why other reviewers have been complaining about the trackpad. The plastic surface feels cheap and cause more traction than glass. The right and left click is also quite stiff which makes one handed use a little bit harder. The elan touchpad software is ok. This is however not an issue that have bothered me yet.

    - The speakers:

Yes, the speakers don't have any base and the sound can be quite hollow and thin. How bad you ask, well let's put it like this: I would rather listen to music from my galaxy s6 speaker. This bothers me quite a bit if I want to watch movies. I use headphones/speakers when listening to music.

    - Killer wirless card

It sucks! Just like every other laptop with a killer wirless card. Why not use a intel one instead...You can't download something at the same time you wan't to surf the web. If you do the internet dies. Removing all apps and programs from killers and reinstalling drivers made it a little better. This bothers me alot.

The meh...., that could have been better:

    - the screen

The IPS sceen that came with this model is the same panel as in the asus strix gl502vs (LG Philips LP156WF6-SPB6, LGD046F) It has good viewing angles but the colours look "dull and dim". I would not recomend this laptop for photo editing. The display is also quite dark, I'm using it on max brightness all the time.

    - Battery

There are only one option which is a 65 wh 3 cell battery. It's a shame that they don't have an option to pick a larger battery and skipp the HDD. The battery holds for 4.5- 5 hours on battery-/ecomode while surfing the web or watching movies which is ok but not great.

    The good:

    - Build quality

The chassi is solid and feels premium. The laptop is very slim and light. I hate the dragon logo tho. No lightbleed.

    - Performance

It performs really well however there are no diffrence from skylake models. Stock Firestrike score is 9700.

    - Cooling

After undervolting the cpu by 0,120 V and disable turbo boost the CPU never reaches over 70 degrees celcius which is amazing with a laptop this thin. The GPU max out at 78 degrees celcius. This is with fan mode set to auto mode not sport mode (doing 4 firestrike benchmarks in a row and playing H1Z1 for 1,5 hour). They where both reaching up to 85 at stock at sportmode which sounded like a vacuum machine.

    - Fan sound

At first I was disapointed because of a high pitched sound comming from the CPU fan which made me want to kill myself. But instead of doing so I did the CPU fix above and now I bearly here the cpu fan at all. The gpu fans is quite loud but far from to high and won't bother anyone with headphones. Im suprised how silent it is reading all the negative reviews about the fans. The fans is not running at all while surfing the web or watching movies.

I'm happy with the laptop even with its drawbacks. I'm amazed how much power there can be in so small of a package. The premium you pay for portability is in my mind worth every penny.

    Hope this helps someone!

    Cheers!

    Hello Lillchillers,
I'm glad you're satisfied with your new laptop.

So not that much of an improvement (over 6RF) after all... Disappointing. I was telling myself that as well, even speaker on my phone sounded better.

I had this dislpay panel in my Skylake model as well and I was really quite disappointed - everyone says how good this display looks but not from my experience (it was waaay to dark). I'm wondering if I had just a faulty one, because everything was soooo dark, even on max brightness. For example when I booted into windows, this ( https://asset.msi.com/global/picture/image/images/wallpaper/2016/wallPaper_01.jpg ) was the background picture.
And this is my question - when you open it on the GS63vr with that panel, can you see any of the details around the edges of the picture (especially on the right side)? Would it be possible to post a photo of what it is actually showing? :) (There was only the central part visible on my model unless I put gamma at -12 or so in MSI Truecolor.....).
I wanna buy the Kabylake model, but the screen quality is bothering me. Also I'm waiting for that 1070 model which has not come yet since early June, damn. o_O

    Thanks!

    Hey fellas!
What do you think about this model? http://www.excaliberpc.com/655100/msi-gs63vr-stealth-pro-229-15.6.html

My other option is this one: http://www.excaliberpc.com/653902/asus-rog-strix-gl502vs-ws71-15.6.html

My main tasks are video editing, animation and post production (After Effects, Premiere, Cinema4d and Davinci Resolve). The games I play are Battlefield 3, Battlefront, Batman, Alien Isolation...

I think the most important for me would be the screen color accuracy, and being able to connect at least two external monitors.

I'll be glad to receive your suggestions.

That GS63VR has a 512GB SSD and 32GB RAM, you don't want a 256GB which is going to limit your potential down the road and it will cost you more later when you find yourself in a position that you need to upgrade the SSD. When you do upgrade on your own that means more $$$ and sometimes with old part left unused.

Yeah, I think this GS63VR is a good long-term investment, but still I would like to replace the 5400 hard drive.

Another detail to take into account is that I live in Peru, and an acquaintance will bring the computer from the US to me. So I must consider well which notebook has less risks of factory problems (because returning the notebook to US again will cost me a lot).

Since most of the data processing will be done in the SSD, the 5400RPM can be used a storage but the cost to change this to a 7200RPM is a lot of lower than SSD.
You can go through any of the resellers on the forum who can help you to perform pretest/screen for issues before shipping the system to your acquaintance.

    Hello,
Regarding screen color accuracy, there's a chance you'll get either of them with the same panel (LGD046F), which has ~84% of sRGB and ~55% AdobeRGB coverage (according to notebookcheck.net). The GS63VR supports at least 3 external monitors, at least it should (miniDP, HDMI, Thunderbolt3...), I don't know about ASUS, but that'll be probably similar case.
Then there's the question of looks - I was also considering the GL502VS (because it has 1070 inside), but I absolutely HATE it's looks - but that's only my opinion. :) (BTW there's a MSI GE62MVR (with gtx1070), which is basically the same as Asus GL502VS (this makes it even worse to decide between GE62MVR or the GS63VR. More power or portability/looks...? :D
If you don't care about looks and weight (GS63VR 1.9kg + 600g DC adapter vs GL502VS 2.6kg + 600g DC adapter), then go with the Asus - 1070 is quite a step up from the 1060.

Thanks Kevin for the fast reply! I still have like two more weeks to make a decision, so I will try to contact those resellers! :)

It's good to know it will support 3 external monitors, and I find useful that GS63VR supports Thunderbolt 3 (useful for docking), while Asus don't clarify if the GL502VS does.

Actually, look and weight are not sooooo important for me, but build quality does. That's why I'm considering the GS63VR.

And about the GPU, that's another question I have. Will it make a big difference? I'm not even a pro gamer so high FPS aren't so vuluable for me.

GL502VS, indeed, does not support Thunderbolt 3 (as well as GE63MVR), but the GS63VR does.
For gaming, usually the higher the GPU the better, so there's that... But as long as you play games on the full HD panel on your laptop, the 1060 already performs extremely well (pretty much every game maxed out at 60 fps and more - not Witcher 3 and a few other games, but they're still playable on high settings...). If you want to play games at 1440p on an external monitor, the GTX 1070 is the way to go... Or if you want serious futureproofing.
As for video editting, I don't think there'll be much benefit from getting the GTX 1070 over the 1060 (CPU is still the heavy lifter here).

Or you can wait for the GS63vr 7RG (GTX 1070) release with us... (That's being postponed continuously... :))

Sorry but both have bad screen color accuracy. There should be a GS63VR skylake model which has the samsung screen from the gs60. That screen had very good color accuracy.

    Thanks! :)
My complaint was that when I watched a video with a lot of dark scenes, I couldn't see absolutely anything even at max brightness, almost everything was just black... When I watched the same video on my GT72's panel, it was OK and I didn't even need to raise the brightness at all. So that's I'm worried about, that I get the same panel on the GS63VR and I won't be able to watch anything, because it'll be completely dark. :D

Would you recommend me another option with similar specs and into that budget, and a better display?

    Thanks!

That's good to know, hopefully your second panel is flawless.

Does anybody else with a GS63VR 4K (034) have severe backlight bleeding along the bottom edge? It's been there since I got it, but it seems like it's gradually getting worse. Or maybe I'm just getting more annoyed with it.

Anything I should try? Got it from GenTech, and I don't want to send it back if it affects lots of models (it'd be a waste of an otherwise good screen).

Hi Steve, regarding the issue, it is common with this 4K panel on all brands.

Thanks for the info. Is there anything I can try to diminish it?

Unfortunately, it cannot be diminished due to its design unless the panel is swapped out to a better panel.
