I know it's a stretch, but do you know of any OLED 3K/4K panels that would fit the GS63VR?

My kabylake gs63vr from BestBuy came with the same panel: Chi Mei [Unknown Model: CMN15D2] N156HGE-EAL CMN N156HGE-EAL.

I have a toshiba 256 m.2 ssd drive. Can I switch that one with a 500gb NVMe drive like the Samsung 960 Evo ?

Since it's PCIe NVMe SSD, you can use any of the Samsung 960 Evo or Pro.

Yeah I can't complain...In all honesty fomr havin used SSD since a few years now....the average Joe might not feel a huge difference between a Sata and NVME but once you start loading or copying large files...its a god send...I think it also helps to take advantage of the available tech on hand. I mean if my laptop would've had a 500gb sata m2 drive i probably wouldve left it alone.but since i Got the 001 with a 128Gb drive . i Had no choice. Just my gdrive alone with work stuff was about 40GB. I have one thing i do need to say. Since switching from the BPX nvme to the samsung Ive been using the laptop day in day out exclusively..as ive been testing stability as i had issues with the other drive and a conflict with the wifi card. One thing ive seen is a INTEL HDCP crash like once a week playing videos i think im supposed to desable that service to avoid it...i just dont remember how. But other than that. The one thing i love the most is the keyboard. I Had a 2014 MBP 13" Retina and now have a 2016 MBP 13 and also still keep a 2012 15". And the Wife has a 2012 i7 13" Vaio S. All of these are known to have nice backlit keyboards. And even the GS60 which i stil have has one. But the GS63VR is my favorite, spacing, feel, and response I absolutely love using this. Aside form my Corsair cherry MX on my desktop this i s my second favorite keyboard to use. I find the trackpad mediocre, but definitely not the worse ive used, it is an upgrade over the gs60's.Just thought id let everyone know how its beeen going since december. And yes i did swap the screen out so i have no issues there, just in case anyone was wondering. I have a nice colorful, bright screeen which helps me go form the macs to the MSI without feeling like shooting myself.

Have you tried the Precision Touchpad driver? It bugs out occasionally, but otherwise is a joy to use and supports native smooth scrolling/gestures in Windows 10. I made a post about it here.

I wish MSI would fix the one (rare) issue the GS series has with this driver and release it officially.

    Hello everyone!

I am in search for a good 13-15inch laptop with a GTX 1060, that's portable and has good battery life while having good build quality (yes, I ask for so little :p)
I need it to take it around with me basically at all times whenever I go out of the house. I'd use it mostly for work, then 3D animation and gaming.

The options I am thinking of so far are:
Alienware 13 R3 - Love everything about it, good battery life with optimus, only thing is I'd prefer a 15 inch screen
Alienware 15 R3 - Love everything about it, but it's not exactly the most portable 15 inch
MSI GS 63VR 7RF Stealth Pro - I love the size and weight, but the build quality while not bad isn't quite as good as the others and I heard it has issues with CPU throttling and poor battery life because of the small battery
Dell XPS 15 (GTX 1050) - Love the build quality and the form factor, but it only has a GTX 1050 which is not nearly as powerful as the GTX 1060

This is what I've read in several reviews, none of this is from my experience as I don't own any of these machines.

I'd love to hear your input and suggestions! Thanks!

Actually for portable and good battery life while having good build quality, I will suggest razer blade 14/ gigabyte Aero 14 or aorus x3 v6
Alienware 13 is a good pick too.

    Thanks for the reply!

Lot's of people have very mixed opinions about the x3 v6 for some reason. Do you know why this is?
The Aero 14 has great reviews with every website I've seen so far, and I especially like the long battery life. Not quite as premium as the rest, but other than that doesn't sound like it has any major flaws.
The thing about the razer blade is that everywhere I read I see people complaning about throttling. Also quite pricey.
Alienware 13 sounds IDEAL, only thing is I still wish the screen was larger.

Spoiled by all the choises lol. So hard to pick.

I am not familiar with x3 v6's mixed opinions since this laptop is pretty rare.
Aero 14 is overall good but no thunderbolt 3.
Razer blade has no throttling after the latest EC update or you can buy the kabylake version which solves it but it indeed run the hottest among all other options while load.
Alienware 13....personally I think it is much heavier than other 3.

Yes, I've noticed not many reviews on the aorus laptop. Why is it rare?
Because I've never really owned a gaming laptop, I don't know what is the big deal about thunderbolt 3? Is it only because of the external GPU support? I see many people see it as a dealbreaker.
If the throttling is fixed then it's not that bad of an option either...
The AW13 is the heaviest, but it's still pretty light to carry around (just above 3kg including the power brick).

I guess its because Aorus is pricey.
thunderbolt 3 is basically a fast port standard, just like usb2.0 vs usb3.0. (Also external gpu support) I like it just because 1060 maybe obsolete 2 years later but with TB3 its more future proof.
I mean 1.8kg vs 2.5kg is quite noticeable for carrying around.

Yes, technically speaking it's a big difference percentage wise, but if you have ever held a 2.5 kg dumbbell/weight in your hand you know you barely notice it.

I've noticed some sort of coil whine coming out of my GS63 when I move the mouse. Any fix for this??

Windows task manager also shows my CPU usage permanently at 100%, does anybody know how to permanently fix this?? Happened twice months ago, fixed with a clean install of W10. Tried uninstalling dragon center and updating to creators update but with no luck :/

coil whine is a thing, don't think there is a way to fix it but you can disable c state in bios to reduce this.
try disable "x boost"(usb and storage) in dragon center.

I had the same problem....gaming on anything under 14 inches for me is not a thing....I think u cant go wrong with the blade really thought its pricey, the aero seems a great choice but i have 2 machines so my choice was easier coming from a gs60 that served me well for a 2 and half years....the aero seems super enticing...But u might also consider the GS43VR which i actually might have gotten instead of the 63vR. Save a few dollars and get the cheapest one as they all come with good displays and better battery life..use the extra cash for as large an NVME ssd as you can put on it..also it has TB3 so thats a plus, and upgrading it is alot easier than a GS63VR so if u cant splurge on the SSD now...get a 250-500GB NVME or 500- 1TB sata drive now and somewhere down the line replace it when the price is right for u..worst case replace the 2.5" Drive first and later on the m2..up to u..Also keep in mind u will want to try and game on native resolutions for best IQ..and the 1080p screen is what the 1060 was made for, anything higher will hamper the experiece.....for around 1500 u can grab one and maybe find a good deal on oe and save a bit more...either way 1500 vs 1700 vs 2000...I think the GS43VR makes a case for itself.....my 2 cents

Make a new power plan under power options or edit an existing one. I use the balanced plan but with my max processor states at 100% and minimum at 5%. If I recall correctly something about creating a power plan with the balanced option (instead of the high performance one) eliminates most of the whining. There is still whining when scrolling and under load, but load usually means I can't hear it over the fans anyway.
Also made a second balanced plan for office work with a max processor state of 70% which is basically silent and almost never whines, even while scrolling.

I thought the coil whine is related to GPU, but try setting processor max utilization at 99% and see what happens.

I'm not really sure which coil is causing it, but using power options and changing the min/max power state is just what worked for me.

I see, when you have a chance, please try reducing the GPU frequency, and another test is to limit max CPU utilization to 99%. Thanks.

I had to do it twice cause the first panel developed some stuck pixels and as much as i liked it i wasn't gonna leave it on.(OCD)...so the seller sent me another panel which is an

    AUO B156HAN01.2

I had a Samsung PLS before it and even have an LGLP156WF6-SP1B1 one sittin as a spare...also its not hard at all start on the sides by unclipping the covers of the hinges first then inserting a plastic card or anything to remove the sticky stuff form the bottom up on the sides to the top then to the middle that will loosen the bezel on the sides and top once that the bottom center has some clips it goes upward not outward if you try pulling u might strip them off. So its upwardand its rel easy cause once all the rest is loose it comes out real easy..also you might want to buy some 3mm to 5mm 3m doublesided tape, like the ones used on cell phone screen repairs real thin as that way u can remove the one that came on the laptop which if done cleanly can be reused no problem, but worst case clean it off and apply the new one. As far as screen quality is..for 60 bucks im very very happy..the Samsung PLS is a bit better i think to my eyes thouch the blacks on the AUO are a bit better. I had to adjust a bit the gamma on the AUO as it comes out of the box its a bit washed up compared to the GS60s PLS which i had put in it the first time...the seller sent a replacement but since the description says replacement or comparable i couldn't really argue..also i live abroad so returning is a bit of a hassle..overall im pleased also this panel has better response than the PLS one so for gaming its aplus...the difference is i can adjust this to look about 90% close to the Samsung PLS fomr my GS60 which to me is one of the best 1080p panels ive seen. I also had a MBP13 retina late 2013 and now have a 2016 so i have other laptops to compare to....as well as dell IPS monitors and the 1440p Gaming monitor form dell. It took me bout 30 to 40 minutes to get everything done right as itook my time the first time, second time took me about 20. Worst case if u break something get a new bezel from msi as thats all i think could go wrong, the panel is screwed on with 4 screws so thats easy to take off once the bezel is off. Let me know is you have any questions...here is a side by side with my gs60 aside form the lighting they look pretty much the same in everyday use....watching videos, gaming, email..etc...i can only notice it sometimes in few instaces..thats my OCD coming on....I highly recommend it for anyone stuck with a BB model and that go it on a deal...Well worth it...also if you are daring enough swap the SSD for something better either larger or faster..the 2.5" drive is serviceble but obvioulsy if u got the cash that goes too.. the only things i wish i could change are.the batteries((why in gods green earth could they put a larger battery on the gs43vr but not the gs63vr??) and the speakers....if i could swap them form the gs60 i would..but different sizes....good luck!!!!!!!!! 20170421_123440.jpg

I messed around with the settings a little more, but I didn't find any noticeable difference by reducing the dGPU frequency or limiting the max CPU utilization.

The exact power options setting that eliminates most of the whine is changing the Intel iGPU to balanced instead of max performance. Reducing the max processor state to 70% and min state to 5% or less will pretty much remove the whining from scrolling/navigating.

First post, and really wanted to be active in this community. Just grabbed my first ever gaming laptop, and decided to go with the Best Buy GS63VR (Kaby Lake, 1060, 256GB m.2 + 1TB HDD). My two biggest factors in choosing a laptop is 1. It can play games with ease and 2. Must be discreet to be brought into corporate meetings. The only other laptop that I can think of is the Razer Blade, but I just can't justify coughing up $1,900 for that.

Anyways, now that I've gone through the thread, I feel like I'm now having buyer's remorse. It's not a "smooth" laptop having the stutter issue even with the 1060 as default GPU. Also, the wifi is really weak and has intermittent disconnections. The screen is also terrible for a $1600 machine, having this weird green hue when you scroll really fast on a browser. The keyboard lighting also has problems like you cannot set it to pure white, always has green and blue leds lit.

I'm trying to hold on to it for a little longer and see if I can convince myself to like this laptop, unless you guys can recommend me something that will fit my two criteria's. I was looking at the Dell XPS 15 with the Kaby Lake and 1050 but that might not be enough for my gaming needs. The Asus ROG laptops are just too much with their "look at me I'm a gamer" styling cues.

Looking forward to your replies fellas!

    Thanks,
    CB

Stuttering may be due to a lot of reasons. The first thing you should do is install a fresh copy of Windows without MSI bloatware. For me, this had a major improvement in usability. Windows Update will install all the drivers automatically. I only installed GPU driver myself through Nvidia GeForce Experience. As for the keyboard lighting, install SteelSeries software and configure the lighting colour to be all white from there.

This laptop utilizes Optimus. This can cause minor stuttering at the benefit of massive battery life increase. If you want a small form factor laptop check out the gigabyte aero 14 also. It has a large battery, thin form factory, slightly more businessy look and only a white backlight.

For some reason the Best Buy Gs63vr has a lesser quality display than the ones purchased elsewhere.

If the system is under warranty, you can have MSI do a check and replace the mainboard if the noise is not bearable.

1.Clean Install Windows will fix 80% of all issues..download appropriate drivers and go.

2.LCD panel there is nothing you can do unless u want to swap it out..since its so new...get on their site...return it and get one of the other models than come with a good screen.

3.1060 is so much better for gaming, so if thats a priority stay with something that is equipped with one.

Best I can tell, the $1549 GS63VR Stealth Pro-252 model has a TN display. This is the model on the floor at nearby stores here I believe. The $1799 -030 and $2049 -229 models both appear to have an IPS display, but these appear to be online only.

It still is under warranty and thank you, though it really doesn't bother me to just change the power plan for office work. I just wanted to share my solution for anyone who might need it. I've been extremely happy with my laptop so far for 6 months and I figure if it isn't broken then no need to have it fixed!

Heres how i see it...and all this is subjective as i am a an exception as i can do most of the work myself. But:

    001 model:1450
    IPS Panel:Lg/Samung/Equivalent 60-70
    1Tb SSD:250
    500GB 960 EVO NVME:250

    Thats pretty much me....

I think your pretty good to go...if u want to swap the panel id say go for it if not...go to BB Return it for instore credit and get the 230 model from their website ordered....its 250 more just for the panel alone..but its the best you can do unless u swap it yourself. I dont think its worth 250 cause id do it myself for that much money. Or return it for a refund and head to GENTECH,XOTICPC or HIDEVOLUTION
