You can argue all you want about the 6700HQ vs the 7300HQ, but clock speed wise they are the same. With hyperthreading turned off my TDP goes down by about 9W and it runs much cooler (aka not in the 90's like it did with it on). My 6700HQ in my XPS 9550 ran much cooler then the 6700HQ in the GS63VR. The only advantage the 6700HQ has is hyperthreading, you can talk about the i5 being a bottom of the barrel but I've owned both and I have no issues with the i5 in terms of performance.

I'll just have to run it in a padded room so I don't lose my hearing before I'm 40... Trust me, the GS63VR that I have is simply way way way way too loud. If the fan is broken then that's the reason, but regardless I couldn't live with it. Like you said, I could tune down the speeds and cook the laptop, but I'd prefer to not struggle with it.

    Benchmarks say differently ;)

Besides, why would you be looking at a 6700HQ model when the 7700HQ models have been out for a long time, that's a much better choice temperature wise and performance wise, like 300mhz faster. The cost savings aren't worth it, get the Kabylake CPU.

Definitely send back the 6700HQ model, and get a new one, or check out the new Raider series, they are getting great temperature results:

That's too bad, now that I see you have the old Skylake 6700HQ model, I would agree, send it back and try the Kabylake 7700HQ model instead :)

There are no benchmarks online with HT turned off on the 6700HQ, however the single core benchmarks are the same (transitive property would say that it would be the same with a 4 core load). The 6700HQ with HT on has the multicore advantage however turning off HT gets rid of that. There are also plenty of tests showing that turning HT off conserves power and has also been the case in all of my tests.

And I purchased the 6700HQ because the 6700HQ model was $300 cheaper. The Raider is a nice laptop, but there is no way I can justify spending that much money on a laptop.

I ordered the new Dell 7577 with the 1060Max Q and i5. It's not near the caliber (both in size and quality I'm sure) of the MSI or XPS but I figure I'd try it out. After discounts it came out to be 730 bucks, couldn't pass up the price.

That's pretty inexpensive, wow, and IDK how a Max-Q 1060 will compare to a 1050ti, but it's likely better :)

Please open up a new owners thread when you get it, if there isn't one already. Would love to hear how a Max-Q 1060 performs compared to a full 1060.

Yeah will do. The Max Q according to notebook check is closer to the 1060 than the 1050ti. I'll play around with it for a while and see if it's worth replacing the XPS with it or not.

Any ideas??? Im looking into theB156HTN05.1 or B156HTN05.2 hopig for some input form u guys before i jump the gun and order one....and before you start doubting those who know me at this point know ive changed panels like 3 times already...hehehehehe...so im not shy about getting this done!!! I have the 7RF version, manufacture date 3-2017. I have not had a hinge issue or problems with the laptop waking up in the bag. There are a LOT of settings in various places to set what devices can wake up your device, I would suggest investigating those and they are in several places for the mouse, the network adapter, a few other things. some settings are in device manager in the individual device entry tabs and some are in other places. I've only been in the BIOS of this machine once but sometimes there can be some settings in there as well. Personally, in the case of a laptop especially one with a fast SSD (whether SATA or MVR), I do not see a reason for sleep mode just shut it down this thing boots very fast. About the only device I use any kind of sleep on anymore is my tablet because I use it for notes and pulling out the pen wakes it up without waiting a couple minutes for a start up (funny my samsung Note A boots slower than this machine does). To save battery I have gone into the selections and setup the power button to black the screen when pressed in and the machine is running, hold a few seconds black screen just not too long because that will shut it down as in a lockedup machine situation.

Thanks - even for the Pro-422? Thought it was supposed to be ~95% SRGB, that panel only does like 50%..

I'm cross-posting this in the other GS63 forum, for maximum visibility. I just received my laptop yesterday, and it's curved. I don't know if this is normal; I suspect not, but I figured you all would know.

In the pictures, you can see a photo of the whole laptop from the front, a closeup showing the middle three feet (which don't touch the surface) and a picture across the front, showing the curve.

On the subject of durability, I travel a lot, which is why I want a thin and light laptop. I really do treat my hardware gently, but it's subject to overhead compartments, turbulence, and occasional handling by other people, all of which are a little bit beyond my control. Basically, the laptop is constantly in a hostile environment. Did I get the wrong machine? Is it too fragile?

Edited for not including the pictures...

    hi all,
just bought a "msi gs63vr stealth pro"
i'm having a problem with installing a fresh win10 on it..
    thing is:
it comes with a badly installed win10 home, and i want to do a fresh win10 pro install.
now, the bios has two boot drivers, 1st legacy, 2nd uefi

if i install useing the uefi, than it installs the copy of win10 that comes with the computer.
it seems that this bios comes with some hidden OS istallation drive,
and even though i boot from a usb win 10 installation drive, it still installs the one that comes with the laptop.

if i choose the legacy, it installs from the usb, but.. it give the installation the home serial it comes with, which is not a problem, the problem is it puts the "System Reserved Partition" on the 5400rpm mechanical drive and not on the ssd nvme..
no matter what i tryed, it puts the SRP on the 5400rpm drive(because it's disk 0)

i want to get rid of the hidden os drive that is on this system, so i thought about upgrading the bios
will that take care of it?

btw, one of the simplest and useless bios I have ever seen!

The reason it's installing Windows 10 Home even though you are booting off your own Windows 10 USB Installation Drive, is because your laptop came with Windows 10 Home, so it has the Windows 10 home key embedded in the BIOS. Thus, it is not even asking you what edition you want to install or even prompting you to enter a product key.

The solution to install Windows 10 Pro is here:

How to select Windows Home or Pro when installing Windows 10

The speakers really are not very loud, and for whatever reason the sound enhancements keep getting disabled by windows because they're causing problems. The speakers on my dell inspiron 11 and a LOT louder than this is by any stretch of the word. I guess they figure most of us will be using a headset or external speakers.

Can anyone confirm that the keyboard is not replaceable before I contact MSI for service? I got a new keyboard in from China after waiting 2 weeks on shipping, but it seems what holds the keyboard to the chassis (metal undercarriage?) is affixed via melted plastic tabs/posts :/

Most likely he is hearing bearing whine, somebody tried hubless fans a few years ago but they never really caught on for whatever reason so you still have the same old traditional ball bearings and often it's that friction that creates the sound. You must have some really sensitive hearing to be bothered by that, turn on some music or watch a movie if it bugs you that much.

Wow that would be poor in a 1500 dollar laptop, I can't imagine that's right. Youtube has a wonderful array of videos on lots of things, I'd look there. Well if it is held on with melted plastic you can still probably get it off and engineer a way to hold it in place, once the case is closed the keyboard probably won't go anywhere gorilla tape should hold it in place till you get the case closed.

Many manufacturers attach the keyboard using the method you describe. I would strongly advise not trying a do it yourself fix, as this would void your warranty, or if you are out of warranty it could increase your cost of repair.

No shortcuts can be advised here...your first step should be to contact either your vendor, or MSI's tech support.

    KEYBOARD IS SOLD HERE

    http://www.laptopkeyboard.com/Guides.php/MSI/GS Series/GS63VR/JMSIGS63

If it's sold I would think it can be changed. Their video is generic but there are some instructions below it. Basically instructions say you have to pry it out. That's one thing about the dell machines changing keyboards is a breeze. Probably the machine's so new not many folks having to deal with changing it but keep watching youtube maybe one will show up.

    ouch 118.00 that is crazy

Say anyone tried both the p950hp6 and this one (1060 version) was curious since I see them for roughly the same price.
Don't care too much about noise, more concerned if the keyboard will burn my fingers when its under load (happend before and it's never fun)
Oh and how do the screens compare?

I read reviews on amazon that the GS63VR has issues with the space bar? Also is it that hard to swap in a new NVMe?

Some users have issues with hitting one side of spacebar which can be less sensitive than other area. This is due to design limitation but this should have been fixed by MSI. However, both versions of keyboard design are still out there so it depends on the model you purchase. NVMe isn't hard to swap but it's not easy too. You will need to watch out for the cables/ribbon wires while working on the internal of the system.

Just ordered a gs63vr-6RF and as an upgrade for both my Toshiba x70 and my desktop with a i5 2500k and SLI 570s. I'm a casual gamer and my plan is to game on this both mobile and at home on my 24" 1080 asus monitor. Eventually in a few card generations I hope to be able to get the GUS2 or other eGPU and run 1440p @ 120hz or even 4k.

Think from the reading i've done here its safe to say first step will be a clean install of windows and undervolting followed by a m.2 upgrade and thermal paste and possibly an intel AC card later down the line. Anything I missed?

I also had a question about the TB3 port and connecting my HDMI monitor via a usb-c hub. I plan to use a hub at home so my keyboard, mouse, monitor and other usb stuff can run off just the usb-c meaning less cable mess. I have read that I will be able to use the 1060 this way but have also read that I am restricted to only the intel graphics unless I use the DP/HDMI ports. Anyone know for sure?

    Saying it will work: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/803817-thunderbolt-3-display-adapter-using-intel-not-nvidia/
I believe someone in this thread said it wont.

The hub in question is the 6-1 wavlink usb-c hub

Download Tool called: O&O ShutUp for Windows 10. You can disable automatic updates easy. I use this on my GS60 nearly 1 year now, no problems. It has a lot of neat features. For example I had problem with Windows freeze or took over a minute for shut down (randomly) With this tool you can configure a lot of hidden settings is in Windows.

If you need any assistance/help with settings how to disable updates let me know (PM)

My understanding is that yes the TB3 port driven monitor will engage the dedicated graphics card when a rendering activity is launched. Technically the TB3 port is connected to the Intel Graphics, as it is an Intel technology, but for gaming etc the Nvidia card is then used and routed through TB3 to the display.

So got everything all set up, undervolted and freshwindows install. I noticed when using my usb-c hub the keyboard and mouse plugged into it drop and hold keystrokes and has mouse studder. I saw the dell dock had this issue as well as last years razor core. I wasn't able to find any fixes for this but might have missed something since I haven't found any topic newer then mid 2016 with this issue. I did make sure to download the Thunderbolt and Intel chipset drivers.

Anyone know of a fix for TB3/USB-c keyboard/mouse issue? Whole reason for buying the hub was so my keyboard, mouse and HDMI could all be on one port.

    Hey guys!

Awesome thread, I've come here often for my various problem with the GS63VR-7RF. So far I have

    - done a clean install
    - swapped the HDD for an SSD
    - exchanged the Killer Wifi for an Intel one

My main problem besides the really lackluster trackpad (is there any way i can make precision drivers work!?) is the display. I have the 1080p IPS one and it's free of defective pixels or backlight bleed.
That's cool and all, but even at max brightness it's to dimm for me. I know it's not the best screen to work with outside or in bright office environments, and that's not why I bought it. But I'm often in a remote location for work and reading the screen is really difficult. Does anyone know of a screen with guaranteed more max brightness?

    Hey Guys,

Made an account just to post this because I am in need of everyone's help. I bought my MSI GS63 6RF around 6-7 months ago and I've absolutely loved it ever since. BUT a few days ago, my laptop suddenly turned on by itself around 5s after I shut down and it hasn't stopped doing that since. I have searched and performed so many several fixes I could find on different forums and websites such as: Disable fast startup, uncheck allow wake up timers in power options, changed some values in registry editor, updated my BIOS, disabling my keyboard and mouse to wake the computer in device manager, reset my pc/reinstall windows, booted into safe mode, etc. Unfortunately none of these have worked and its getting really really really frustrating.

Only two methods have actually worked into making sure my laptop doesn't turn on after I shut it down: Holding the power button down til it dies (which I obviously want to avoid doing for obvious reasons) and flashing the EC using the BAT file from the MSI support website (it turns off after flashing the EC). I have no idea if its safe for me to keep flashing the EC just to turn off my laptop so I don't really want to do that either.

Does anyone have any suggestions or have any experience with their GS63 doing this? Any help would be much appreciated as I am close to pulling out all my hair. Doesn't really have any other issues since I can still edit music and play my games, but its a pretty big problem to have for me. please guys /girls :( :( :( :( :(

    Thanks

I bought Call of duty: WWII-game from Steam, but my new laptop can´t run it. In multiplayer, it takes a lot of time for the matches to load, and the matches lag very badly. Other games run without problems in my laptop. (The Destiny, Titanfall 2). What should I do?

Sounds like a problem with the game. Without any other details I would suggest you start with the basics. Since its a new game, make sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers. Also I would check Call of Duty WW2 specific forums for others having similar issues and if there are resolutions.

Its possible you have some funky graphic settings turned on that are causing issues. I would recommend starting with the lowest graphic settings with just about everything turned off, just to see if it plays smoothly like that. Then bit by bit turn up the graphic settings. That should hopefully identify which setting is causing issues, then keep that off.

    HI there,
I just got a new GS63VR Stealth pro with 1080p 120hz Display, 1070 max q, 16gb ram, 256gb m2ssd and 2tb hdd. All looks fabulous except for the adudio few I heard strage cracks when heavy loading.
Also, the battery looks poor lasting, is there any way I can improvre the experience with this lap? I am running win10 home and will uninstall Norton for Webroot any other hints?
Shall I update the gpudriver from Nvidia?

    Thanks for your help!
    cheers

I know this is a LOOOONG thread.... but I would recommend reading/skimming through as much as you can. I would recommend the following, and using the search function it shouldnt be too hard for you to find more details:
    -Clean install Windows to de-bloat.
-Undervolt your CPU and CPU cache, that should help with battery.
-Definitely update your drivers, at least your GPU.

One of my gpu fans are making a rattling noise. Does anyone know how much MSI service charges for fan replacement?

The best way to find out is to ask MSI.

Call MSI directly and ask to purchase the fan if you wish to replace it yourself.
