Gigabyte P35X v6 but its probably louder.

45dB in the MSI is a damn good rating for a thin and slim gaming laptop.

Yes undervolting will help, you can use Intel XTU to undervolt the CPU.

i watched the videos of these laptops several times, she clearly stated more than once how much quieter the GL502 is, not to say it is quiet, but it is the gs63 that is insanely loud, she also mentioned 105F compared to 129 F for msi,
again, the GS63 is ultrabook chassis with gaming performance, which is amazing, by no means it is "worse" than the GL, it is just your priorities,

If anyone has undervolted/underclocked to achieve lower temps/quieter fans i would love to see your stable settings and step instructions on how to do it

I'd really like to know if all the FHD models have the same panel.

This was answered a ways back:

The computer BeastOG bought was the 512gb version from Amazon (GS63VR-068) - he came up with the same panel as the Best Buy version (GS63VR-001). It looks like all units use the same display.

Undervolting will help the temps some but nothing drastically.. Fans will still be loud.

I don't think the 4K panel is great either.. It seems they are RGBW Pentile, which is basically a psuedo 4K with the extra extra white diode :/

I had the GL502VS before returning it, as I found the design too unprofessional for office use. But it didn't make an intolerable amount of noise to my ears.

Yeah it seems the GL502 might be a little quieter but Notebookcheck's review of the VS model with 1070 noticed it was pretty high pitched, probably not far off from what I experienced on the GS63.

I would not call it high pitched, but everyone interprets these things differently. Certainly it was audible. It's not that surprising that fan noise is an issue across all of these laptops, as this is the first time a full desktop GPU has been shoehorned into a mobile machine.

A full desktop GPU has nothing to do with it.. Especially if the TDP of the 1060 = 970M. Which is why the previous GS60 is also loud(er) than this unit. It comes down to being too thin and light and finding fans that do the job of getting the heat out quieter than what MSI used..

has someone try to install the latest MSI True Color from the Msi support webpage?. When i try to install it says This system is not supported.
I have the Best Buy Version (full HD panel)

Looks like MSI true color is only supported in the 4K version... am i right?

I remember having that issue too.. However it seems that the Dragon Center has True Color built in and has a few presets you can use and it did change the screen tones/colors. MSI's software suite is very confusing for sure.

You're not missing out on much. :) It's basically a bunch of filters, most of which make the image worse imo.

Yep I agree with this, it's just pointless filters except for maybe the blue filter which will be easy on the eyes. If you're looking for accuracy, time to get into colorimeters/sensors and do a real calibration.. Borrowing .icc profiles don't work because every panel is unique and weird from the factory and requires different calibration settings. I mean, 8/10 times someone else's .icc might "get you by" and still be better than factory though.

The GS63VR have LG IPS panels? No?

I find LG IPS panels have very good accuracy out of the box, only thing you need to do is fix the white color temp to 6504K.

I got the GS63VR and it's a great laptop except for one thing -- the wifi.

With my Macbook, I get about a 40-50 ping on wifi and a steady connection. With the GS63VR, I get a 60-70 ping that spikes to 150.

I downloaded the wifi/lan drivers from MSI's site. Then I clicked update on the device manager to ensure they're up to date. The problem remains.

Is the wifi hardware on the MSI just worse than Macbook? Or do I have a problem? Any tips? Thanks

Which Wifi adapter did it come with? The Killer Wifi has a tuning step, which most people forget to do, it's in the Killer Manager systray app and tests your internet connection and sets parameters based on the results - the defaults used before this step can be less than optimal.

Open the Killer Manager Settings and find this test, click "Update Speed", you can also type in the values if you have previously run the test and remember the numbers. Do this after every Killer software update.

    Killer Manager #1.JPG

    Killer Manager #3.JPG

There is also a place to set the preferred latency:

Killer network - wireless settings - click on Max Throughput button.JPG

Some people using the Killer Installer after initial install and remove the fancy features by unclicking them and re-running the install. You can also now download a "drivers only" update package from Killer instead of the whole Suite, but then you lose out on the local bandwidth tuning.

I found after doing that simple automatic "Update Speed" test everything ran fine - and you get the benefit of balancing local application network usage - you can watch a video stream while downloading a Steam Game + Torrent + ftp

With Windows 10 updates quite often I will see a new wave of Wifi complaints right afterwards, so when that happens to you check the vendor site for new updates, and even better is to go to the OEM Wifi card maker's site for updates.

It may take them a few days or weeks to recover from a Windows 10 update, just like everyone else. So have patience, and use Ethernet while waiting for a Wifi update.

i have also the new GS63VR... very nice quality, good screen ((no bleeding, nice colors) and VERY FAST!
Noise while surfing, office, etc is non existing (if you put it in ECO MODE and choose custom fan speeds) .

In gaming mode is very loud but i dont care cause i use headphones.

Keyboard is nice but i dont like the position of Windows and Delete key .
I removed almost all bloatware and its going without problems.

The only problem i have is when i connect an external monitor and use only this as primary scrren, in every online video (youtube, vimeo etc) i cant go Full screen, its total black).
I tried several thing and the only way to correct this, is by disabling the Intel vga from device manager.

Another thing i dont like, its that is very difficult to change RAM and ssd , only the mechanical disk is easy (and is only 5400 rpm!)

I'm currently installing Witcher 3. Steams says its allocating space, still hasn't started downloading actually :p
Funny thing is, I'm getting high CPU usage during this. At first I thought it might be the CPU usage issue some are having. But I did check before for this and the CPU usage was normal. 1-3% almost always. And when I exit the installation all goes back to normal. :-D

    @Diversion
Ill post back for fan noise after some gaming is done. :)

I havnt experienced that... its always on.

But, I think I do have an issue. CPU usage gets to high 90s and 100% and sometimes stays there while I'm doing anything with steam or origin. Edge browers dosnt do that... also while watching a movie, it stays at 6%-9% usage. While browsing it stays below 10% always. Funny thing is, I don't get the high CPU usage when I'm in the steam app or origin app. Only if I'm downloading a game through that I get the high usage... can anyone check to see if this happens?

Do you have an anti-virus installed? It could be processing the files being downloaded, but excludes steam downloads.

I've pretty much uninstalled every bloatware using revo uninstaller. I've been monitoring the CPU usage since my last post. It has gone away since then... Couldn't get it to replicate... Weird... Also been playing FIFA 16 with a bunch of friends, while not even remotely demanding, the notebook ran quietly and temps never reached 65c, stayed below that always. I dont think the fans went full. 60% i think. Ill get to more demanding games after some days. Schedule has been quite busy lately.

Running Unigine Valley will be a good representation of gaming load right? Still havnt seen how loud it actually gets. But as for now, im totally happy with the fan noise. And the system as a whole is really fast.

Just one thing thats a bummer... The HDD is way too slow to be included in something that costs this much... Anyone who buys this should consider replacing that with some SSD. And also, speakers are... whats the word... umm horrible... But i knew that before buying this, and as a person who uses headphones all the time, it wasnt a concern for me. The HiFi Sabre DAC really does make a difference. I can notice the difference with the same headphones on this and my friend's laptop. Its amazing. Sounds really good.

Ill post more results and impressions later hopefully. As for now, I'm impressed with the performance, and still cant stop being amazed at the size of this notebook. And weight. A solid notebook.

Would this be suitable as a workstation (programming, running VMs etc) and occational gaming? The key to success would be plenty of cpu power and fast ssd during work running on optimus without a lot of fan noise. Dont mind if it sounds a lot during gaming though.

    I'm still having wifi problems.

I have Killer wifi installed and in settings there is no option to automatically detect optimal speeds. I have messed around with upload/download speeds by typing in the numbers manually but it doesn't help. The wifi just disconnects or is weak constantly, compared to a macbook.

    Any other ideas?

Did you download the latest Killer Suite or Drivers Only software from the Killer download site?
    http://www.killernetworking.com/product-support/driver-downloads/item/killer-suite

Just use your known upload/download numbers, or use the ones from your contract with the ISP - they usually tell you your bandwidth.

    Did you check ethernet too?

If your ethernet is fine, but your Wifi isn't, then the debugging starts with your Wifi router firmware (updae it from the vendor site) and settings, and the settings handshake on your laptop.

To get full speed you need to be using WPA2 and TLS as the encryption settings (for faster than 54MB/s), and enable (or disable) WMM on router and laptop.

If your router has QOS settings, use those to prioritize traffic.

Check to see if you have another Wifi router on the same channel, they all default to 3 or 6, and as you can imagine, most people don't know this and never change it.

Look for a channel that is the center of the clearest spot, and change your router channel to that channel.

You can use Android software to see the wifi landscape, or use your PC with inSSIDer 3.x - it's free - the 4.x stuff costs $ to get - I have it but you can check it out using the 3.X version freely downloadable:
    http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html

Or you can use the builtin Killer Manager tool that does the same thing.

I just ran Unigine Valley for like 45 mins maybe more. Settings are Ultra quality with 8x AA , 1080p. Was almost always above 60 fps.
Temps was 68c Max for CPU, 72c Max for GPU. And regarding fan noise, it was never near full. Along with ambient noise an AC noise in the room, I couldn't hear the GPU fan at all, CPU fan was very slightly audible. But then again, its subjective I think. I don't think its loud at all for my use. And in normal use, its all silent. Really happy with the GS63VR. :)

    Thanks.

I tried uninstalling my existing Killer Wifi drivers and downloading the latest drivers from MSI's site and it didn't solve the ping spikes/disconnects.

I tried installing the killer suite + the drivers from MSI's site, and it didn't help.

I tried 'auto' tuning the bandwidth, and it didn't help.

I am not going to mess around with my router's settings, as all other laptops and devices get great wifi in my house. I expect MSI's laptop to work just like they do (and they're far less expensive). I also don't have the luxury of tweaking router settings in all my locations.

Given what I've said, what do I do? Return the laptop? Any last things I can try?

killer cards have always been hit or miss for me. I've used the same card in six laptops recently and two of them have been shoddy. I the case of the razer blade, I just replaced it with the Intel 8260 ac and all my problems disappeared.

I've tried everything short of modifying my router settings (which I know is not the problem -- other laptops work just fine in the house at fast speeds). This is such a disappointment. I've waited hours on this wifi problem.
