what are you guys running? W8 or 8.1? I am worried about all the update drive issues etc etc.....
-
I'm running 8.1. No issue at all
-
Guys, anyone have idea where I can buy keyboard replacement for MSI GS70?
-
So no drivers issues at all? I mean if you just put in 8.1 gs70 into google you go so many hits, do you feel its all resolved by most recent drivers, or you are pretty lucky.
And for you, whats the advantage of 8.1 over 8 if you dont mind me asking. -
No, all works well. I did initially have some BSOD's, which I was attributing to the Killer network driver, but turned out to be some faulty RAM. No further issues at all.
Main benefits of 8.1 over 8? Most visible changes are around the 'metro' interface, addressing some of the concerns from 8. Ability to boot to desktop is the key one, the start button is back (right click to get old-style ish start menu) 'Metro' apps can be handed like standard programs (in that they show as an icon on your taskbar, they have x in the corner etc)
Most certainly a worthwhile upgrade -
Thanks mate, might give it a go this weekend!
-
So anyone know where to buy keyboard replacement? It's so annoying when I'm trying to write something on my laptop. For example 'S' button behave like shift + s, ctrl is switching on and off randomly and 'c' key is not working at all. The rest is fine. Please give me an answer is there any possibility to buy a new one.

The keyboard is part of C panel therefore you have to purchase the whole assembled part.
Have you checked with MSI directly? -
Not yet I thought I can bought it like another keyboards from to MSI laptops. I'll try today. Thanks.

Hey guys, I've been having problems lately with my Wifi randomly dropping. I've posted to Tom's Hardware and a someone said to update the BIOS.
I've gone onto the MSI site for the GS70 Stealth, downloaded the windows 8.1 BIOS Version 70E. I was following their instructions: It all worked properly, but after hitting the confirm update, it restarted saying that it was a security fault or something.
I was wondering, how do i successfully update my BIOS for the MSI GS70 Stealth GTX860 Windows 8.1. Could anyone give me some pointers? -
Would anyone recommend the IC Diamond thermal paste over the stock paste? I was configuring one up and I noticed it was an option?
(I dont want to do it myself as I might ruin the laptop...) -
hey guys
I bought a MSI GS70 Stealth a few months ago, however I have a small issue with it. BIOS nor Windows is keeping system time properly
When I first got the laptop, I immediately fit a Samsung SSD and installed Windows 7. Everything was working great for nearly three months until one day a couple of weeks ago, I noticed the system clock wasn't keeping time. It would lag and then mysteriously lose an hour here and there. I checked the BIOS clock and that wasn't right either so was wondering whether it could be the CMOS battery, but do these give up after only a few months? I've never had to change a CMOS battery and thought they lasted a good few years at least.
Anyway I haven't changed the battery yet but did try the following to troubleshoot this issue,
1. uninstalled CMOS realtime clock in safe mode and reinstall upon boot
2. uninstalled recently installed software
3. virus scanned laptop, nothing found
4. malware scanned laptop, nothing found
5. flashed BIOS to E1771IMS.109 (latest BIOS for Win 7). This didn't fix it, however since reading the note on the MSI BIOS download page... " If the notebook you purchased has Win7 Bios installed, please DON'T attempt to update using Windows 8 bios (or vice versa). Failure to abide may result in bricking your system." I've since flashed again back to the latest Win 8 BIOS (E1771IMS.50E) as mine shipped with Win 8.
Also, I don't know if it's just me being paranoid but the actual laptop battery doesn't seem to be holding charge for as long as it did.
I've spoken to MSI, although they aren't much help at all. After explaining the above to them, they decided my time zone wasn't set correctly and told me to change that and it would be fixed..................... I held back on mentioning the addition of the SSD as I don't know how to approach that with them. I've read of MSI accepting the fact that users upgrade memory and hard drives now and again and that is acceptable within warranty. What I don't want them to say now is that warranty is void because of the SSD :-S
If I can fix this myself then all the better. I'm hoping some of you guys have maybe heard of similar problems and possible fixes!
thanks

It's a good paste that will last a long time without drying out, you will still need to clean out the fins with compressed air every few months of course but should not need to repaste.Agent AA1 said: ↑Would anyone recommend the IC Diamond thermal paste over the stock paste? Perhaps try resetting the OS to stock first and see whether if the issue persists or not.
But if it does, then contact MSI for warranty service. -
actually come to think of it, the laptop developed that 'tingling' sensation when you run your hand across the outer casing of the laptop at about the same time. I'm lead to believe this could be an AC adapter fault. Could this cause voltage issues within the laptop and knock the system clock out of sync?Kevin@GenTechPC said: ↑This can be a hardware issue which requires a motherboard replacement.

I'm trying to find a slimmer more 'laptop bag friendly' charger to use.
I found a range called 'Intocircuit', which are nice and slim, much like the one for my old series 9 Samsung.
But unsure whether it'll work with this laptop, as I can't find an MSI specific one.
I found this one which is for Lenovos. it has a 5.5/2.5 nib - which I think is the same as the MSI one with a 19v output.
I can't work much more out that than. from what I can gather elsewhere, they're 65w - is this going to be too underpowered? I don't mind if it takes all day to charge - or if it even manages to charge at all - just something to see me through the day at work really - so nothing intensive either.
Any other recommendations for a slim & light charger?
(What about something like this ? ) -

If you don't feel like doing it yourself then yeah it is advisable to pay the extra for the paste. Hey guys, I have a chance to pick up a GS70 2OD-002US with the following config:
I7-4700HQ
16GB DDR3
1TB HD
2x256GB SSD
I currently have a custom built gaming desktop, and a Zbook 15.
I have been looking for something more portable, but I still want to be able to game.
I can get this GS70 for $1200, but I've also been looking at a 2013 Razer Blade 14, which I can get for $1300 refurbished.
How portable is the GS70? I know the screen is bigger than my Zbook, but does the thinness make up for it?

Laptop back from D&J and the system time is working fine again. They replaced the motherboard thinking that it might have had a suspect connection where the CMOS battery sits. I now have another quandary... I had Windows 7 installed on the laptop before I sent it away but wiped everything with the idea that I'd try Windows 8 when it came back. Obviously my recovery media restores the laptop to it's original state (Windows 8 installed on the 128GB SSD and my 500GB Samsung SSD becomes the 'DATA" drive). When I had Windows 7 installed, I could choose where to install it and opted to use a partition on my 500GB SSD. I used the 128GB SSD to store all my music. How would I go about accomplishing the same thing now, given that the recovery media only 'recreates' a factory default setting (not allowing choice of SSD to install on)?
I've looked down the downloading of the Windows 8 setup files from Microsoft route, however hit that snag when it asks for the serial key and I realise that mine is only for OEM and not retail
I don't want to mess about with torrent versions of the ISO, is there anyway to extract Windows 8 OS from the MSI recovery media or choose my setup when recovering?
thanks

Hey Andy!
Unfortunately the recovery leaves something to be desired. All it is is an image of the Windows installation with some bloatware per MSI. You can't extract the Windows setup files from that. -

Has anyone successfully dual booted Ubuntu 14.04 on this laptop? I attempted it using the boot-repair utility to get the bootloader working and it simply won't boot Ubuntu (but it will boot Windows).

THIS SHOULD BE STICKIED AT THE TOP. I thought I was the only person who bought the 128gb and got another hard disk and then tried 5 million times to do a raid reinstall of windows using a backup or a usb or anything of the like. Waste of hours. Call MSI, get the recovery cds and do the raid there.Kevin@GenTechPC said: ↑You can't do it with recovery media, but if you have the original installation disc then you can do it.Click to expand...

I went from a 14" ultrabook to a GS70 - I'm constantly travelling worldwide. Aside from having to buy a bigger backpack (Got a Northface Router, fantastic by the way) - I've noticed no hassle at all carrying this thing. I've gotten so used to the screen size now 14" laptops now look like postage stamps. Best thing I ever did. Thinness and low weight for what it is combined with good quality backpack, barely notice its there.Shakenbake158 said: ↑How portable is the GS70? Make sure to create original recovery discs before reinstalling Windows 8 with a different installation disc since the key is edition sensitive so if you use the wrong version of Win8 then the key embedded in the BIOS will not be accepted by the installer.UsnRoberts said: ↑Just re install windows 8?Click to expand... -

Hi guys,
So I'm kinda new here but seeing so many gs70 users, I think I came to the right place.
I have been experiencing a problem which ill describe here:
After 3 weeks of owning this laptop, I decided to have a LAN party with some mates. halfway through the day my games weren't as smooth anymore and after a while I figured out that it's because the laptop started using the intel graphics.
Switched it to run at nvidia graphics for the games I was playing using control panel and add the games to the list.
From that point on most games started freezing on startup of the game or showing colored blocks/pixels. An alt-tab back and forth would make it continue sometimes.
And when I finally got in-game I could play pretty normal somehow.
Then later on when the game would freeze and I had to shut it down, I received a popup "display driver has stopped working and has recovered"
Searched alot around the internet and tried many things like:
- updating drivers (also trying older versions)
- adding TDRDelay to register and change value multiple times up to 10
- multiple malware scans and other cleanup tools to rule out trojan.bitminer.
- as last resort did a clean install of windows by resetting to factory default.
None of the attempts fixed my problem. I am experiencing this with multiple games from an old game as CS:GO to the somewhat demanding game Planetside 2.
Both games showed the same symptoms.
However, the game Combat Arms by Nexon works perfectly fine for some odd reason.
So I tried some other non-steam games and installed crysis 2.
At first it looked promising but when I changed the graphic settings, it just went down to the old problem.
I thought maybe the 1920x1080 resolution was the problem (combat arms starts in a smaller res untill actually in a game)
but I haven't found any good games to test that theory yet.
Besides those things, my laptop also makes quite some noise and generates decent amount of heat while just being idle. then when I move my mouse and start using it again on chrome or something, I can hear sound go down to a normal silent sound it should make by default.
I am afraid my graphic card is having some malfunction, but before shipping it away (which would take an easy 2 weeks) I figured to check here to see if anyone has any thoughts on this or had a heard of this before and knows how to fix it.
Regards,
Josh -

Contact your reseller as that sounds like a potential hardware issue.

I sent my laptop in when I had an issue with my keyboard (I may or may not have had a coffee accident). MSI corrected my problem, charged me nothing, and was extremely quick and about it. Don't stress the issue. If you have registered your laptop online. Just have them fix the problem (they may just replace it like my case). The worry and trials in fixing are not worth it, especially if its a component level problem that you cant fix anyway. No computer is impervious to failure and it sounds to me like you have a bad video card or video firmware or software issue. Just pay the shipping to them and do without it for a week. You will thank me.J-ossiej said: ↑Hi guys,

There is a new BIOS version. But they messed up and... there is no update utility, just the new
Can we use the ones from previous versions? (I don't have them, but I want to know if it makes sense to search for them) -

Hello.
Got a bit problem with my GS70 . Often there is "lost in performace" for some time during gaming. This can reduce my FPS down for few points, depend on game. I got my resource monitor up and running and from history i cant say that CPU is trotting or something. Everything should be updated as i update on regular basis. I am especting this issue from first day use.
My idea is about of "low power" AC-DC adapter included, is this possible? As i can understand included adapter can supply about 150W max- How i figure out this can be related? When i am charging battery and playing - i got this performace lost untill battery is full. So my tip is that adapter can not provide machine enough power for long term gaming.
Is there anything i can do for this? I really enjoy my device, however, sometimes this can get me a bit angry.
Any idea if there is official MSI adapter with more then 150W output or some other solution? Small adapter is great for transfer but at home i rather use bigger and powerful one.
Thank you. -

Hey there,
I decided to make an account to give someone a heads up if their fan starts doing that crazy buzzing sound, because I just fixed mine without drilling a hole through the middle or taking the fan apart (if that's possible).
Anyway, yesterday the fan evolved from the slight purr it started to have, to the sudden and scary loud buzzing. I had fixed this problem before on other laptop fans, but they were easily disassembled and oil could be applied directly on the shaft no problem.
Not the case with the Ge70. I separated the halves by bending the metal "fingers" with pliers, but couldn't get the shaft out of the bearing, and didn't have a drill on hand as the Russians suggested so I looked up other solutions, such as oil seeping, which is only possible if the cap isn't glued on. Well this is what worked for me.
I removed the stickers, and cleaned out the groove of all the adhesive around the black cap at the center of the fan with a needle, and applied a drop of sewing machine oil at the center, making sure the oil had contact with the groove. Came back 10 minutes later and applied another drop, making sure the oil that wasn't on the black dot or groove got cleaned up with a tissue.
I came back 20 minutes later and the oil was not to be seen, so this is what must have happened, the oil seeped through the groove and into the bearing/shaft center.
Spun the fan around manually to get the oil mixed up, put the other half of the case back on, plugged it in, ran the turbo mode, and no buzzing occurred even after shaking around the fan (which usually started the loud buzzing).
TL;DR Don't drill, just apply the finest oil you can find on the black cap at the center (after removing the stickers) after cleaning the groove, and wait until it's gone. Repeat a couple times and your fan should be back to normal. Mine doesn't purr anymore, and no more buzzing even if I suddenly tilt or swing my laptop. Good as new.
Hope this saves you some cash and time.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this.
